Abstract:Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a commonly used plasticizer and additive to adhesives, printing inks and nail polishes. Because it has been found to be a powerful reproductive and developmental toxicant, a sensor to monitor DBP in some working spaces and the environment is required. In this work polyaniline nanofibers were deposited on the electrode of a quartz crystal oscillator to form a Quartz Crystal Microbalance gas sensor. The coated quartz crystal and a non-coated quartz crystal were mounted in a sealed chamber, and their frequency difference was monitored. When DBP vapor was injected into the chamber, gas adsorption decreased the frequency of the coated quartz crystal oscillator and thereby caused an increase in the frequency difference between the two crystals. The change of the frequency difference was recorded as the sensor response. The sensor was extremely sensitive to DBP and could be easily recovered by N2 purging. A low measurement limit of 20 ppb was achieved. The morphologies of the polyaniline films prepared by different approaches have been studied by SEM and BET. How the nanofiber-structure can improve the sensitivity and stability is discussed, while its selectivity and long-term stability were investigated.

Abstract:Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a widely used plasticizer which has been found to be a reproductive and developmental toxicant and ubiquitously existing in the air. A highly sensitive method for DBP monitoring in the environment is urgently needed. A DBP sensor based on a homemade wireless-electrodeless quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) coated with nano-structured nickel hydroxide is presented. With the noncontact configuration, the sensing system could work at a higher resonance frequency (the 3rd overtone) and the response of the system was even more stable compared with a conventional quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The sensor achieved a sensitivity of 7.3 Hz/ppb to DBP in a concentration range of 0.4–40 ppb and an ultra-low detection limit of 0.4 ppb of DBP has also been achieved.

Abstract:A simple and signal-amplified, label-free electrochemical impedimetric immunosensor for dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a type of phthalate ester, was developed using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) induced signal amplification. The approach was based on an indirectly competitive binding system of coating antigen that coated on antigen/chitosan/MWCNTs@GONRs/GCE (modified electrodes), target (DBP) and anti-DBP antibody. Signal amplification was performed via the enlargement of AuNPs through NADH-promoted catalytic precipitation, which caused a marked increase in the electron-transfer resistance and electrostatic repulsion after an AuNP-labeled second antibody conjugated to anti-DBP. Under the optimized conditions, this method displayed: (i) low detection limits (7ng/mL, 10 times lower than the traditional ELISA method using the same antibody); (ii) satisfactory accuracy (recoveries, 86.0-120.4%) and agreement with corresponding ELISA method; (iii) high tolerance to some environmental interferents; and (iv) low cost and low sample consumption (6µL). Our results demonstrate the great potential and high efficiency of this immunosensor in practical applications for the cost-effective and sensitive monitoring of DBP in aquatic environments.
Direct Detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in Juice and Beverage Samples Using PDMS Modified Nanochannels Electrochemical Sensors

Abstract:Direct electrochemical detection in real food samples remains challenging due to the fouling and interference by abundant interference components. Herein, we report an electrochemical sensing platform based on binary assembly of silica nanochannels and polydimethylsiloxane that is able to detect Pb2+ and Cd2+ in real food samples without complex pretreatments. Using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, the electrochemical detection consists of electro-deposition of metal species and subsequent anodic stripping in the modified silica-nanochannels. Under the optimized conditions, the linear ranges were obtained from 4 to 1500 mu g L-1 for Pb2+ and 30 to 900 mu g L-1 for Cd2+. The relative standard deviations were 2.9% and 3.6% for Pb2+ and Cd2+ of 300 mu g L-1. Without tedious pretreatments, the quantitative detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in real juice and beverage samples was successfully performed, revealing that the developed sensor possesses excellent anti-interference and practicability properties for unprocessed food.
Highly Sensitive Ratiometric Fluorescence Detection of Dibutyl Phthalate in Liquor and Water Using Bio-Based Fluorescent Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Abstract:A novel fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer (DBP-FMIPs) was designed and prepared for the selective detection of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) in food samples. This was achieved using inclusion complexes formed between short amylose and DBP as precursors, with tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile, which possesses an electron-donor-acceptor type dipolar structure within a compact benzene backbone, serving as a crosslinking agent and fluorescent readout signal. DBP-FMIPs exhibit excellent fluorescence stability and high selectivity, with a response time of less than 3 min for DBP. Based on the blue-green fluorescence emitted by DBP-FMIPs (λem = 500 nm), this material provided the response signal, while the red-emitting carbon dots(R-CDs, λem = 680 nm) were used as an internal reference, constructing a ratiometric fluorescence probe (R-CDs/DBP-FMIPs). The fluorescence intensity ratio (I500/I680)0/(I500/I680) exhibited a linear response to DBP within a concentration range of 0.020 to 20 mg L-1, with a detection limit as low as 4.5 μg L-1, and its fluorescence color shifted from blue to red. The fluorescent probe was successfully applied for detecting DBP in liquor and drinking water samples, achieving recoveries of 88-107% and a relative standard deviation of 1.1-6.4%. This preparation method can also be adapted for synthesizing FMIPs targeting other hydrophobic compounds. Additionally, the developed ratiometric fluorescence probe shows great potential for the selective and visual detection of phthalates in complex samples.

Abstract:Abstract A novel electrochemical sensor for diisononyl phthalate (DINP) analysis was investigated. The sensor was modified on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with DINP molecularly imprinted polymer particles (MIPs). The electrode was assembled by the mixture of MIPs and agarose in proportion. The MIPs were formed by bulk polymerization via non-covalent multiple interactions, which were further characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The linear response range of the MIP sensor was between 50 and 1000 nM, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 27 nM. The proposed system has the superiority of high-speed real-time detection capability, no sample pretreatment, simple operation process, little detection cost, short detection time, high sensitivity, low interference and good stability. Therefore, it shows the potential for application in food safety supervision of DINP.

Abstract:Herein, a sensitive immunosensor for the rapid detection of Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) small molecules was developed. Its principle is based on /Polyethyleneimine (PEI)-rGO and hybridization chain reaction signal amplification system. First, /PEI-rGO modified electrode is used as a signal amplification platform and the antibody is fixed. In the presence of target DBP, it competes with DBP-bovine serum albumin-S0 for binding antibody. Finally, the DNA concatemer carrying a large number of signal molecules methylene blue combines with its S0 to produce a reduced electrochemical signal. Under the most reasonable conditions, this immunosensor showed a good linear range from1 pg·mL-1 to 0.1 μg·mL-1with a low detection limit of 0.276 pg·mL-1. It has been verified that this immunosensor has good selectivity, reproducibility and stability. The designed biosensing solution will open up a new path for DBP monitoring and other small molecule targets in the food field.

Abstract:In this paper, a simple and innovative colorimetric method is established, which is based on DBP-induced aggregation of arginine functionalized gold nanoparticles (ARG-AuNPs), and can be used for the sensitive determination of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) in Baijiu samples. The morphological characteristics and the color changes of ARG-AuNPs caused by aggregation show good sensitivity, and can be observed through ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential technology. The color change of ARG-AuNPs from red to blue is due to the strong non-covalent interactions between DBP and ARG-AuNPs (electrostatic, van der Waals force and hydrogen bonding), which leads to the reduction of the electrostatic repulsion between the nanoparticles and aggregation. A two-stage linear equation was established between the absorption ratio (A690/A530) and the DBP concentration (0.0-2.8 mg L-1); the correlation coefficient (R2) was 0.9914-0.9940, and the detection limit (LOD) was estimated at 0.05 mg L-1. The designed ARG-AuNPs acting as a dependable sensor for the detection of Baijiu samples equally acquired satisfactory recoveries. When the concentration of DBP in the solution is more than 1.0 mg L-1, the color change can be clearly observed by the naked eye; so there is no need for sample preparation techniques and tedious operations to quickly and semi-quantitatively detect DBP. The successful application of the proposed method in Baijiu samples indicates its potential to detect DBP in more complex environment samples.

Abstract:Development of an efficient technique for accurate and sensitive dibutyl phthalate (DBP) determination is crucial for food safety and environment protection. An ultrasensitive molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) voltammetric sensor was herein engineered for the specific determination of DBP using poly-l-lysine/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/porous graphene nanocomposite (PLL/PEDOT−PG) and poly(o-phenylenediamine)-imprinted film as a label-free and sensing platform. Fabrication of PEDOT−PG nanocomposites was achieved through a simple liquid–liquid interfacial polymerization. Subsequently, poly-l-lysine (PLL) functionalization was employed to enhance the dispersibility and stability of the prepared PEDOT−PG, as well as promote its adhesion on the sensor surface. In the presence of DBP, the imprinted poly(o-phenylenediamine) film was formed on the surface of PLL/PEDOT−PG. Investigation of the physical properties and electrochemical behavior of the MIP/PLL/PEDOT−PG indicates that the incorporation of PG into PEDOT, with PLL uniformly wrapping its surface, significantly enhanced conductivity, carrier mobility, stability, and provided a larger surface area for specific recognition sites. Under optimal experimental conditions, the electrochemical response exhibited a linear relationship with a logarithm of DBP concentration within the range of 1 fM to 5 μM, with the detection limit as low as 0.88 fM. The method demonstrated exceptional stability and repeatability and has been successfully applied to quantify DBP in plastic packaging materials.

Abstract:Plasticizers are a type of toxic substance that may remain in food, posing significant health risks including carcinogenic, teratogenic, mutagenic, and other adverse effects. In this study, a novel strategy was employed by combining Pt@Au nanozymes with high catalytic properties to created two catalytic signal probes, designated as Pt@Au@Ab1 and Pt@Au@Ab2, specifically designed for the detection of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). These catalytic signal probes served as the foundation for the development of a colorimetric immunoassay, enabling the simultaneous detection of both DMP and DBP. The colorimetric immunoassay is capable of detecting DMP in the range of 0.5–100 μg/L with a limit of detection as low as 0.1 μg/L and DBP in the range of 1–32 μg/L with a low limit of detection of 0.5 μg/L. The developed immunoassay can be used for the determination of the DMP and DBP in baijiu and plastic bottled drinks. The recovery rate is in the range of 96.4% and 100.5% and the coefficient of variation is between 1.0% and 7.2%. This innovative colorimetric immunoassay offers a robust tool for the simultaneous quantification of DMP and DBP in real samples.

Abstract:A sensitive and artful colorimetric immunosensor based on horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was designed by labelling metal–organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) on the second antibody (Cu-MOFs@Ab2) as signal amplification for the detection of trace dibutyl phthalate (DBP). Abstract:Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) as a plasticizer is widely used in food and chemical industries. It is harm to human health when it appeared in food and water. A novel near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence molecularly imprinted sensor based on CdTe quantum dots and zeolite imidazolate framework-67 was developed with a sol-gel polymerization method for rapid and sensitive determination of DBP in foodstuff rapidly (only in 1.5 min). The fluorescence imprinted sensor provided a rapid detection method for DBP in the linear response concentration range of 0.05-18.0 μM with a low detection limit of 1.6 nM. Compared with previous fluorescence imprinted sensor, it behaved faster response speed and lower detection limit for determination of DBP. The fluorescence imprinted sensor was used to detect DBP in real samples successfully with satisfied recoveries of 97.2-106.4%, suggesting a potential application in food analysis.

Abstract:Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) has been extensively used as a plasticizer in many daily products, which is highly toxic to human, notably affecting the reproductive and developmental function. As the previous method is expensive, time-consuming, low sensitivity and just focused on the environment. Present study was aimed to establish an ultra-sensitive and simple method based on good quality monoclonal antibody, applying to evaluate excretion level of DBP in urine samples of Chinese population directly. A monoclonal antibody was generated and characterized after fusion of myeloma cells with spleen cells isolated from BALB/c mouse. The mouse was previously immunized using a specially designed amino derivative of DBP conjugated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) as immunogen. Cross-reactivity values of the monoclonal antibody against DBP, di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP) were observed 100% and 1.25%, while for dimethyl phthalate (DMP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) and didecyl phthalate (DDP) the values were <0.06%. The standard curve was constructed at 0–50ngmL−1 and good linearity (R2=0.994) was achieved. The observed IC50 (7.34ngmL−1) and LOD (0.06ngmL−1) values was improved 1000-fold to polyclonal antibody and 5-fold to other monoclonal antibodies. A total 1246 urine samples were analyzed and the detection frequency of DBP was observed 72.87% by ic-ELISA. The 95th percentile and mean concentration of DBP were 12.07 and 3.00ngmL−1. Acceptable recovery rates of DBP were 97.8–114.3% and coefficients variation 5.93–11.09%. The concentrations of DBP in females were found significantly higher (p<0.05) than males. Similarly, the DBP in middle aged and low educated individuals was found higher (p<0.001) than the others. Considering the adverse health effects, DBP internal exposure in the Chinese population should be reduced. The ic-ELISA method has been proved as a cost effective, specific, and highly sensitive screening tool to detect DBP in urinary samples.
Bimetallic Plasmonic Au@Ag Nanocuboids for Rapid and Sensitive Detection of Phthalate Plasticizers with Label-Free Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract:Phthalate plasticizers (PAEs) are posing a serious threat to human health, so it is urgent to develop effective and reliable ways to detect the food additives PAEs sensitively. In this study, we have reported plasmonic bimetallic Au@Ag core-shell nanocuboids for the rapid and sensitive detection of PAEs in liquor samples with a label-free Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) strategy. Compared with single-element nanostructures, the bimetallic SERS platform can integrate two distinct functions into a single entity with unprecedented properties. Consequently, we synthesized Au@Ag nanocuboids (Au@Ag NCs) composed of a Au nanorod (Au NR) core and a Ag cuboid shell, which could produce richer and broader plasmonic resonance modes than Au NRs. It is obvious that the SERS signals of crystal violet (CV) and butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) reached a maximum as the thickness of the Ag coating shell was in a certain threshold and there was a strong dependence of the Raman enhancement on the Ag cuboid shell-thickness. Based on the optimized size, the sensitivity and repeatability of Au@Ag NCs were evaluated with limits of detection (LODs) at around 10-9 M both for BBP and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). In addition, the SERS active substrate core-shell Au@Ag NCs can be used to detect BBP as low as 1.3 mg kg(-1) spiked into the liquor samples. Thereby, the unique bimetallic Au@Ag NCs showed a huge potential for the rapid and sensitive detection of PAEs in liquor samples.

Abstract:Currently, developing new types of simple and effective detection methods of phthalate plasticizers (PAEs) remains challenging, whereas the detection process of the traditional instruments is tedious and laborious. With regard to PAEs, their intrinsically poor Raman activity and very low affinity onto metallic surfaces seriously obstruct the realization of directly effective surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection. Here, a dual-mode sensing system with the effective and specific detection of trace butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP, one of PAEs) was demonstrated by constructing beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) stabilized AuNPs (AuNPs@beta-CD) colloid. The AuNPs@beta-CD assemblies could achieve the enrichment of trace BBP by the hydrophobic cavities of beta-CD units, which significantly improved the detection sensitivity. Serving as macromolecular binder and switchable Raman reporters, BBP could assemble AuNPs@beta-CD into photonic clusters with different shapes. The obtained BBP-triggered AuNPs@beta-CD clusters are able to amplify the corresponding SERS signals due to the abundant hot spots with a lowest detection limit of 0.01 mu M. In the colorimetric analysis of detecting BBP, the colorimetric distinguishable response can be accurately quantified via UV-vis spectroscopy with AuNPs@beta-CD clusters acting as naked-eye indicators and a detection limit as low as 14.9 nM. Particularly, the proposed colorimetric/SERS sensor was applied to evaluate BBP in liquor and rice wine and the recovery of BBP added to liquor and rice wine samples was 90-108% for UV-vis spectroscopy and 87-109% for SERS assay. The corresponding vibrational bands in supramolecular complexes composed of BBP and beta-CD was recognized by the density functional theoretical simulation. Our proposed indirect detection strategy of BBP opens a new avenue to design novel and effective solvatochromic and/SERS-based sensing systems in the field of trial applications.

Abstract:A microflow chemiluminescence (CL) sensor for determination of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) based on magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) as recognition element was fabricated. Briefly, a hydrophilic molecularly imprinted polymer layer was produced at the surface of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) via combination of molecular imprinting and reversible stimuli responsive hydrogel. In this protocol, the initial step involved co-precipitation of Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ in an ammonia solution. Silica was then coated on the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles using a sol-gel method to obtain silica shell magnetic nanoparticles. The MMIP was synthesized using methacrylic acid (MAA) as functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as cross-linker and 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator in chloroform. Then the synthesized MMIP and magnetic non-molecular imprinted polymers (MNIP) were employed as recognition by packing into lab-made straight shape tubes, connected in CL analyzer for establishing the novel sensor with a single channel syringe pump. And a mixer for hydrolyzing of DBP was followed. Based on this experiment principle, DBP was determined indirectly. And the MMIP showed satisfactory recognition capacity to DBP, resulting to the wide linear range of 3.84 × 10⁻⁸ to 2.08 × 10⁻⁵ M and the low detection limit of 2.09 × 10⁻⁹ M (3σ) for DBP. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for DBP (3.20 × 10⁻⁶ M) was 1.40% (n=11). Besides improving sensitivity and selectivity, the sensor was reusable. The proposed DBP-MMIP-CL sensor has been successfully applied to determine DBP in drink samples.
Dual amplified ratiometric fluorescence ELISA based on G-quadruplex/hemin DNAzyme using tetrahedral DNA nanostructure as scaffold for ultrasensitive detection of dibutyl phthalate in aquatic system

Abstract:<p>Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is considered as one of the most widely used phthalate esters (PAEs), which has attracted worldwide concerns because of its potential threats to eco-environments and human health. Systematic investigations of DBP environmental occurrence contribute to the further risk assessment, which depends on effective and available analytical methods. In this study, an amplified ratiometric fluorescence ELISA was established for sensitive and high-throughput detection of DBP in the aquatic system based on a novel tetrahedral DNA nanostructure (TDN)-scaffolded-DNAzyme (Tetrazyme). Wherein, Tetrazyme was prepared by the precise folding of G-quadruplex sequence on three vertex angles of the TDN, together with hemin as the horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mimicking enzyme. The rigid TDN avoided the local overcrowding effect to provide a reasonable spatial spacing on the interface for G-quadruplex sequence, increasing the collision chance between DNAzyme and substrates, improving the catalytic ability of DNAzyme effectively. Besides, streptavidin (SA) and biotin (bio) were used to anchor TDN and antibody, in which the specific binding of SA/bio could make more Tetrazyme conjugate on each signal element, resulting in the dual signal amplification. Meanwhile, the accuracy and precision were enhanced owing to the inherent built-in rectification to the environment from the dual output ratiometric fluorescence assay. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limit of this proposed method was 0.17 ng/mL (16 times lower than that of conventional ELISA using the same antibody) with a satisfactory accuracy (recoveries, 79.0%- 116.2%; CV, 2.1–6.5%). Overall, this platform provides a promising way for accurate, sensitive and rapid determination of DBP from environmental waters.</p>

Abstract:A one-step incubation ELISA kit based on monoclonal antibody against dibutyl phthalate (DBP) was developed. After optimizing concentrations of coating antigen, antibody and composition of the assay buffer, an inhibition curve was plotted. The IC50 is 29.6 ng·mL-1, and the detection limit for DBP is 3.6 ng·mL-1. Compared with other ELISA methods, this ELISA kit had a simpler sample preparation, costed less time for detection and could detect more types of sample. The recoveries of DBP in water, beverage and liquor samples were range from 78% to 110.4%, the range of coefficient of variations is 7.7-15.3%. The cross reactivity was very low (&1%) except that for butyl benzyl phthalate (3.9%) and the di-isobutyl phthalate (12.5%). The detection results in liquor showed good correlation with those from GC-MS. All data above indicated that this kit could be used as the fast and high-throughput screening of DBP in water, beverage and liquor.

Abstract:In recent years, there have been incidents involving the illegal addition of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) to liquors. It is well known that PAEs such as butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) have estrogen-like effects, so high PAE levels in the body can lead to a decreased sperm count in males and altered sexual organ development in children, for example. The rapid detection of PAEs in liquor is therefore an important task. Compared with traditional methods of testing for PAEs, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) offers higher sensitivity and the ability to search for chemical fingerprints, allowing the rapid detection of particular PAEs. In the present work, we synthesized Ag@Fe3O4@Ag/β-cyclodextrin (CD) nanoparticles for use as a SERS-active substrate. Fe3O4 aggregates quickly under the influence of an external magnetic field, making it possible to magnetically separate out the NPs, which simplifies sample processing. The detection limit of the system for PAEs is also improved because the β-CD acts as a functional group with a cavity structure that is capable of adsorbing BBP to form a host (β-CD)–guest (BBP) complex. This substrate was shown to possess good repeatability and sensitivity when using malachite green (MG) as a probe molecule. Furthermore, the nanoparticle-based SERS substrate permitted the detection of BBP down to a level of 1.3 mg/kg in liquor, which is low enough to be able to detect BBP in real-world liquor samples. We expect that this method will prove useful for the rapid detection of PAEs in food.

Abstract:Rapid and sensitive detection of n-butylidenephthalide (NBP) is crucial for quality control of Radix Angelica Sinensis (RAS) and its related pharmaceuticals due to their shared pharmacological effects, such as immune enhancement and anti-tumor properties. Current detection methods struggle to quantify NBP quickly and accurately. A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based electrochemical sensor has been developed, forming a film on PCN-222(Fe) via electropolymerization for the rapid and selective detection of NBP. o-Phenylenediamine (o-PD) was polymerized onto PCN-222(Fe), utilizing its high surface area and porous structure to create a high-performance MIP (MIP/PCN-222(Fe)) sensor. This sensor detects NBP binding at the molecularly imprinted sites through a redox probe, with current changes reflecting the NBP content in the sample. This sensor exhibits a strong affinity for NBP, with a linear detection range from 200 nM to 1 mM, a detection limit of 76 nM, and high specificity towards similar phthalide compounds. Experimental results show that the MIP/PCN-222(Fe) sensor can accurately quantify NBP in real samples, offering a simplified method with promising applications for RAS quality evaluation.
