Abstract:In this paper we will discuss the comparison between Alisa and Pleberio in La Celestina, and Zheng Shi in Romance of the Western Chamber. We will look at both the ways and attitudes that parents take when exercising the guardianship of their daughters and also the roles they play in the love stories of these two young girls. In the first place, we see that Alisa displays negligence and ignorance when exercising her tutelage of Melibea. She totally ignores the love and passion that Melibea has. As for Pleberio, his tutelage of his daughter is equally flawed: he relies heavily on her false excuses which allows her to go to the secret appointment with her beloved. Although he proposes a husband to Melibea, his original intention is to have heirs to secure his estate, so that he can die in peace. Unlike Melibea's parents, Zheng Shi, mother of Cui Yingying, is distinguished by prudence and care in exercising her daughter's tutelage: she controls all her actions in accordance with domestic discipline and the Chinese feudal code. The elderly mother loves her daughter very much and plays a decisive role in the choice of spouse. Moreover, we note that the parents of the two girls have proposed a marriage with a noble boy for their daughters, but the girls consider them to be obstacles to the exercise of their free will and their desire to consummate their relationships with their lovers. Therefore, the lovers engage, albeit to different degrees, in a struggle to pursue their own romantic plans consistent with their amorous feelings.
