Abstract:Responding to the growing bandwidth demand by emerging applications, such as fixed-mobile convergence for fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G, 100 Gb/s/ λ access network becomes the next research focus of passive optical network (PON) roadmap. Intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) technology is still considered as a promising candidate for 100 Gb/s/ λ PON attributed to its low cost, low power consumption, and small footprint. In this paper, we achieve 100 Gb/s/ λ IMDD PON by using 20G-class optical and electrical devices due to its commercial availability. To mitigate the system linear and nonlinear distortions, neural network (NN) based equalizer is used and the performance is compared with feedforward equalizer (FFE) and Volterra nonlinear equalizer (VNE). We introduce the rules to train and test the data while using NN-based equalizer to guarantee a fair comparison with FFE and VNE. Random data have to be used for training, but for test, both random data and pseudorandom bit sequence are applicable. We found that the NN-based equalizer has the same performance with FFE and VNE in the case of linear distortion, but outperforms them in a strong nonlinearity case. In the experiment, to improve the loss budget, we increase the launch power to 18 dBm, achieving a 30-dB loss budget for 33 GBd/s PAM8 signal at the system frequency response of 16.2 GHz, attributed to the strong nonlinear equalization capability of NN.

Abstract:Increasing the serial bitrate to 25-Gb/s per channel as well as coexisting with the same optical distribution network of the 10G-ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is challenging. The bandwidth limitation and the reduced dispersion tolerance at high date rate make it much more difficult to achieve higher loss budget. In this paper, we have first shown a demonstration of a symmetric 4 × 25-Gb/s time-wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network system based on nonreturn-to-zero on-off-keying format supporting 0–20 km reach in O-band. 10G-class directly modulated lasers (DMLs) are employed to serve as both upstream and downstream transmitters owing to the low cost and the frequency chirp induced by DML can be used for bandwidth equalization. Instead of using digital signal processing, the chirp management and frequency equalization are simultaneously realized in optical domain through our proposed dispersion supported equalization technique. By employing a spool of dispersion-shifted fiber in optical line terminal (OLT), a single device can be used to simultaneously equalize the frequency response of multiple downstream and upstream channels. Then, we further use a semiconductor optical amplifier as a booster and preamplifier at the OLT for downstream and upstream, respectively. A power budget of 26 and 32 dB with 0–20 km reach of standard single mode fiber for downstream and upstream transmission at 1310 nm is obtained. The experimental results shown in this paper reveal that our proposed cost-effective scheme would be a promising candidate for the next generation 100G-EPON.

Abstract:While infrastructure providers are expanding their portfolio to offer a sustainable solution for beyond 10 Gbps in optical access network segment, we compare experimentally several alternatives that may be used in future passive optical networks (PONs) to deliver 25+ Gbps net-rates. As promising candidates, we consider the intensity modulation direct detection (IM-DD) systems employing the following modulation formats: (i) duobinary, (ii) 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), and (iii) discrete multitone (DMT), which are all more bandwidth efficient than the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) in current 10G PON solutions. In this paper, we focus on the optical budget after transmission over a 20 km single-mode fiber (SMF) link in C-band and discuss the intrinsic imperfections of optical components that may significantly reduce the received signal quality.

Abstract:We first experimentally demonstrate the ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (UD-WDM-PON) system at 9.95 Gb/s per wavelength on a 12.5-GHz grid, adopting digital pre-equalization considering narrow-band optical filtering effect at the transmitter. Eight optical carriers with 12.5-GHz frequency spacing carry 9.95-Gb/s digital pre-equalized binary signals (on-off keying) and are optically filtered. 25- and 45-km single-mode fiber (SMF)-28 downlink transmissions are experimentally demonstrated. The bit-error ratio for each of the eight channels is less than 1.0 x 10(-9) after transmission over 25-km SMF-28.

Abstract:The surging growth in data traffic has necessitated the development of higher-speed, lower-latency intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) passive optical networks (PONs) with higher power budgets. To address the inherent limitations of traditional silica-based solid-core fibers, anti-resonant hollow-core fibers have garnered significant attention from both academia and industry. In this Letter, we present an experimental demonstration of 100 Gb/s PAM-4 IM/DD PON transmission over a 20 km anti-resonant hollow-core fiber in the C band, utilizing low-complexity digital signal processing (DSP). The result achieves a record high power budget of 42.5 dB, facilitated by a 3-tap weighted lookup table (LUT) at the optical line terminal (OLT) side and a semiconductor optical amplifier used as a preamplifier at the optical network unit (ONU) side. This represents the highest power budget reported for IM/DD PON to date, to the best of our knowledge, and offers a promising alternative for the future evolution of PON systems.

Abstract:High speed data modulation based on bandwidth limited devices has been considered as a cost-effective way to upgrade 10G-EPON to the next generation 100G-EPON. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the modulation, fiber transmission and reception of 25-Gb/s signal based on directly modulated laser and photo-detector both operating at 10 GHz. Instead of digital signal processing, the chirp management, dispersion compensation and frequency equalization in our scheme are realized in optical domain using a single delay interferometer. Three popular formats are investigated, including NRZ-OOK, PAM-4 and duobinary. According to the experimental results, the NRZ-OOK format shows its superiority in both launch power and receiver sensitivity, which provides a cost-effective solution for the construction of 100-Gb/s TWDM-PON.

Abstract:In this paper we present the simulative analysis of a 200 Gbps per wavelength (λ) 8-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-8) downstream communication over up to 20 km single mode fiber (SMF) in C-band based on direct detection (DD) achieving at least a 29 dB link power budget in a PON environment. We use chromatic dispersion digital pre-compensation (CD-DPC) and a dual-arm in-phase and quadrature Mach–Zehnder modulator (IQ-MZM) at the optical line termination (OLT) side, while preserving DD in the optical network unit (ONU). Three receiver digital-signal-processing (DSP) options are analyzed and compared: square-root-like technique (SQRT) in combination with a feed forward equalizer (FFE) and a decision feedback equalizer (DFE), the Volterra nonlinear equalizer (VNLE), and the SQRT in combination with the VNLE. The SQRT can be applied in combination with the VNLE to decrease the receiver DSP complexity while maintaining the required system performance. We show that PAM-8 with CD-DPC and the SQRT in combination with the VNLE is a feasible solution for 200 Gbps per λ downstream C-band transmission for PON.

Abstract:Directly-modulated laser (DML) is widely employed in intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) system due to its low cost and high output power. However, the corresponding frequency chirp is regarded as one of the main disadvantages for its application in passive optical networks (PONs). In this paper, we theoretically analyze the frequency response evolution of DML based system under different chirp and dispersion conditions, proving that the system bandwidth can be improved by interactions between negative dispersion and DML chirp. Based on this concept, we experimentally demonstrated downstream 50 Gb/s PAM4 signal transmission over 20 km single-mode fiber (SMF) access based on the 10 Gb/s DML operating at 1310 nm and avalanche photodiode (APD). A dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) providing -150 ps/nm dispersion at 1310 nm in the optical line terminal (OLT) is used to pre-equalize the frequency response of bandwidth-limited directly modulated signals in the optical domain. Thanks to our proposed dispersion-supported equalization (DSE) technique, the system bandwidth can be improved by 5 GHz. Feed-forward equalization (FFE), decision feedback equalization (DFE) and Volterra filter are employed to evaluate the signal performance improvement, respectively. By evaluating the receiver sensitivity, the DSE combined with FFE scheme shows 2 dB improvement than the complex Volterra algorithm, indicating its potential to reduce the complexity of digital signal processing (DSP) and therefore a lower cost and power consumption in PON.

Abstract:A low-complexity and cost-efficient coherent detection-based 100 Gb/s or beyond passive optical network (PON) has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, as this technology offers high receiver sensitivity, colorless frequency selectivity, and linear detection enabling channel impairment compensation in the digital domain. We experimentally demonstrate the first single-wavelength 200 Gb/s coherent PON over 20 km downstream transmission with polarization division multiplexed four-level pulsed amplitude modulation (PDM-PAM-4) signals in the C-band. The intensity modulator replaces the costly in-phase/quadrature modulator, and hardware-efficient carrier recovery technologies are used for recovery of PAM-4 symbols. By using optimized Nyquist pulse shaping, the transceiver bandwidth can be reduced to within 50 GHz. A maximum power budget of 32.5 dB can be achieved for 200 Gb/s/λ PDM-PAM-4 at a bit error rate of 1 × 10 − 2 over 20 km fiber transmission. The possibility of a 200 Gb/s/λ PON is investigated using intensity modulation and coherent detection for the first time to our knowledge.

Abstract:As the broadband applications continue rising, the solutions of high-speed passive optical network (PON) with large power budget are highly desired. Direct detection scheme combined with digital signal procession (DSP) has been considered as a promising candidate due to its low cost, low power consumption and simple architecture. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate 200 Gbs and 240 Gbs time division multiplexed passive optical network (TDM-PON) downstream transmissions based on four-level pulsed amplitude (PAM-4) modulation with direct detection in O-band. A high bandwidth thin film lithium niobate modulator is adopted to generate high Baudrate optical signal at the optical line terminal (OLT) side. A pre-amplified semiconductor optical amplifier SOA is employed at the optical network unit (ONU) side to improve the power budget. Several DSP algorithms are studied to compensate the linear and nonlinear distortions. We also propose a simplified Volterra nonlinear equalizer (S-VNLE) to reduce the computational complexity. Considering the soft-decision FEC (SD-FEC) threshold (1 102), over 29 dB and 28 dB power budgets are achieved respectively for 200 Gbs and 240 Gbs PON system after 20 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) based on our proposed S-VNLE.
