Abstract:We report on experimental demonstration of 2x2 MIMO-OFDM 5.6-GHz radio over fiber signaling over 20 km WDM-PON with directly modulated (DM) VCSELs for femtocells application. MIMO-OFDM algorithms effectively compensate for impairments in the wireless link. Error-free signal demodulation of 64 subcarrier 4-QAM signals modulated at 198.5 Mb/s net data rate is achieved after fiber and 2 m indoor wireless transmission. We report BER of 7x10(-3) at the receiver for 16-QAM signals modulated at 397 Mb/s after 1 m of wireless transmission. Performance dependence on different wireless transmission path lengths, antenna separation, and number of subcarriers have been investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the system model of intensity modulation with direct detection (IM/DD)-based high-speed short-reach link with directly modulation laser (DML) and bandwidth-limitation optics devices. And, based on this model, we propose a modified Volterra equalizer to compensate distortion by constructing second-order feature vectors for support vector machine (SVM) trainer in this high-capacity and limited bandwidth system. Owing to high-dimensional mapping characteristics of SVM, for our scheme, only a single classification hyperplane is needed to be trained to achieve satisfactory equalization performance for the multi classification tasks of PAM-M, which would reduce the calculation complexity. Moreover, the 80-Gb/s PAM-4 per wavelength transmission experiment with 10-G optics in 20-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) DML system is conducted and utilized to manifest the feasibility and effectiveness of our scheme. The results show that our scheme can reach the HD-FEC threshold and achieve outstanding performance than commonly used equalizers.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new equalization algorithm based on SVM combined with DFE structure to improve performance of high-speed bandwidth limitation system. A comparison between traditional DFE, FFE and SVM-DFE are employed to prove the feasibility of our algorithm in 50-Gb/s PAM-4 transmission experiment with lOG optics system. Experimental results show that compared with the traditional DFE, the receiver sensitivity used SVM-DFE can be improved by ~1-dBm @BER=3.8e-3.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the transmission of 100 Gbit/s and beyond vestigial sideband (VSB) n-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-n) signals, with a commercial 10 GHz-class directly modulated laser (DML) in the C-band, using optical filtering. To mitigate transmission impairments at the transmitter side, Nyquist pulse shaping and Kaiser Window filtering techniques are used to overcome the limited bandwidth of optoelectronic devices. At the receiver side, the joint nonlinear equalization based on cascaded multi-modulus algorithm (CMMA) and Volterra Filter (VF) is used to reduce the strong nonlinear impairments from chirp and chromatic dispersion (CD). 100 Gb/s PAM-4, 107.5 Gb/s PAM-4, and 101.25 Gb/s PAM-8 signals can be successfully transmitted over 45 km, 10 km and 10 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) under the bit-error-ratio (BER) of 3.8 × 10-3, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we firstly present a novel equalizer only with a single support vector machine (SVM) training hyperplane to compensate the distortion of multi-class PAM-M signals in low-cost limited-bandwidth next generation passive optical network (NG-PON) system. For this scheme, only single SVM-based hyperplane is trained, and then it is extracted and used to realize the multi-classification task of PAM-M by adjusting the corresponding offset, which would greatly reduce the complexity of equalization algorithm and enhance its application in future high-speed PON system. Moreover, the 50-Gb/s PAM-4/8 per wavelength transmission experiment with 10-G optics in 20km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) PON system are set up and utilized to manifest the feasibility and effectiveness of our scheme. The results show that, compared with the common SVM scheme with multi-classification hyperplane training, our method can reduce M-1 times computational complexity caused by hyperplane training for multiple-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-M) signals. Except this, the propose scheme can also maintain almost the same bit error ratio (BER) performance as the common SVM classifier with multi-hyperplane case.

Abstract:Directly-modulated laser (DML) is widely employed in intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) system due to its low cost and high output power. However, the corresponding frequency chirp is regarded as one of the main disadvantages for its application in passive optical networks (PONs). In this paper, we theoretically analyze the frequency response evolution of DML based system under different chirp and dispersion conditions, proving that the system bandwidth can be improved by interactions between negative dispersion and DML chirp. Based on this concept, we experimentally demonstrated downstream 50 Gb/s PAM4 signal transmission over 20 km single-mode fiber (SMF) access based on the 10 Gb/s DML operating at 1310 nm and avalanche photodiode (APD). A dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) providing -150 ps/nm dispersion at 1310 nm in the optical line terminal (OLT) is used to pre-equalize the frequency response of bandwidth-limited directly modulated signals in the optical domain. Thanks to our proposed dispersion-supported equalization (DSE) technique, the system bandwidth can be improved by 5 GHz. Feed-forward equalization (FFE), decision feedback equalization (DFE) and Volterra filter are employed to evaluate the signal performance improvement, respectively. By evaluating the receiver sensitivity, the DSE combined with FFE scheme shows 2 dB improvement than the complex Volterra algorithm, indicating its potential to reduce the complexity of digital signal processing (DSP) and therefore a lower cost and power consumption in PON.

Abstract:Increasing the serial bitrate to 25-Gb/s per channel as well as coexisting with the same optical distribution network of the 10G-ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is challenging. The bandwidth limitation and the reduced dispersion tolerance at high date rate make it much more difficult to achieve higher loss budget. In this paper, we have first shown a demonstration of a symmetric 4 × 25-Gb/s time-wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network system based on nonreturn-to-zero on-off-keying format supporting 0–20 km reach in O-band. 10G-class directly modulated lasers (DMLs) are employed to serve as both upstream and downstream transmitters owing to the low cost and the frequency chirp induced by DML can be used for bandwidth equalization. Instead of using digital signal processing, the chirp management and frequency equalization are simultaneously realized in optical domain through our proposed dispersion supported equalization technique. By employing a spool of dispersion-shifted fiber in optical line terminal (OLT), a single device can be used to simultaneously equalize the frequency response of multiple downstream and upstream channels. Then, we further use a semiconductor optical amplifier as a booster and preamplifier at the OLT for downstream and upstream, respectively. A power budget of 26 and 32 dB with 0–20 km reach of standard single mode fiber for downstream and upstream transmission at 1310 nm is obtained. The experimental results shown in this paper reveal that our proposed cost-effective scheme would be a promising candidate for the next generation 100G-EPON.

Abstract:In this letter, transmission of directly-modulated PAM-4 in C-band is experimentally demonstrated. Instead of introducing any optical devices for dispersion management, we employ receiver-side equalization consisting of Volterra-based FFE and Volterra-based DFE, to mitigate the signal distortions induced by the frequency chirp effect and chromatic dispersion. Results indicate that, PAM-4 transmissions of 56 Gbps over 60-km and 60 Gbps over 80-km are achieved respectively under the HD-FEC limit (3.8 x 10(-3)) and SD-FEC limit (2.2 x 10(-2)).
