In this work, we demonstrate an interferometric precision of 2.42^+1.76_-1.29dB beyond the three-mode SQL, using balanced spin-1 (three-mode) Dicke states containing thousands of entangled atoms. The input quantum states are deterministically generated by controlled quantum phase transition and exhibit close to ideal quality. Our work shines light on the pursuit of quantum metrology beyond SQL.

Abstract:We propose a method to perform precision measurements of the interaction parameters in systems of N ultra-cold spin 1/2 atoms. The spectroscopy is realized by first creating a coherent spin superposition of the two relevant internal states of each atom and then letting the atoms evolve under a squeezing Hamiltonian. The non-linear nature of the Hamiltonian decreases the fundamental limit imposed by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to N^(-2), a factor of N smaller than the fundamental limit achievable with non-interacting atoms. We study the effect of decoherence and show that even with decoherence, entangled states can outperform the signal to noise limit of non-entangled states. We present two possible experimental implementations of the method using Bose-Einstein spinor condensates and fermionic atoms loaded in optical lattices and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract:We propose a method to generate large cluster states without usingconditional (e.g., CNOT, C-phase) gates. Indeed, an arbitrarily large clusterstate can be generated and expanded almost deterministically by single-qubitrotations and a special non-deterministic collective detection. If the rotationof each step is sufficiently small, the quantum Zeno effect will guarantee thatthe state is projected into the intended subspace after each measurement, andan almost-perfect cluster state can be produced. We also propose a possibleimplementation of this approach using superconducting flux qubits.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement can provide enhanced precision beyond standard quantum limit (SQL), the highest precision achievable with classical means. It remains challenging, however, to observe large enhancement limited by the experimental abilities to prepare, maintain, manipulate and detect entanglement. Here, we present nonlinear interferometry protocols based on echoing spin-nematic squeezing to achieve record high enhancement factors in atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The echo is realized by a state-flip of the spin-nematic squeezed vacuum, which serves as the probe state and is refocused back to the vicinity of the unsqueezed initial state while carrying out near noiseless amplification of a signal encoded. A sensitivity of $21.6\pm0.5$ decibels (dB) for a small-angle Rabi rotation beyond the two-mode SQL of 26400 atoms as well as $16.6\pm1.3$ dB for phase sensing in a Ramsey interferometer are observed. The absolute phase sensitivity for the latter extrapolates to $103~\rm{pT/\sqrt{Hz}}$ at a probe volume of $18~\mu\rm{m}^3$ for near-resonant microwave field sensing. Our work highlights the excellent many-body coherence of spin-nematic squeezing and suggests its possible quantum metrological applications in atomic magnetometer, atomic optical clock, and fundamental testing of Lorentz symmetry violation, etc.

Measurements with prediction and retrodiction on the collective spin of 10^{11} atoms beat the standard quantum limit

Abstract:Quantum probes using $N$ uncorrelated particles give a limit on the measurement sensitivity referred to as the standard quantum limit (SQL). The SQL, however, can be overcome by exploiting quantum entangled states, such as spin squeezed states. We report generation of a quantum state, that surpasses the SQL for probing of the collective spin of $10^{11}$ $\\text{Rb}$ atoms contained in a vapor cell. The state is prepared and verified by sequences of stroboscopic quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements, and we apply the theory of past quantum states to obtain the spin state information from the outcomes of both earlier and later QND measurements. In this way, we obtain a conditional noise reduction of 5.6 dB, and a metrologically-relevant squeezing of $4.5\\pm0.40~\\text{dB}$. The past quantum state yields tighter information on the spin component than we can obtain by a conventional QND measurement. Our squeezing results are obtained with 1000 times more atoms than in any previous experiments with a corresponding record $4.6\\times10^{-13} rad^2$ variance of the angular fluctuations of a squeezed collective spin.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement can provide enhanced measurement precision beyond the standard quantum limit, the highest precision achievable with classical means. However, observations with a large enhancement remain challenging due to experimental limitations in the preparation, control and detection of entanglement. Here we report a nonlinear interferometry protocol with echoed spin-nematic squeezing in a spinor atomic Bose–Einstein condensate. We generate spin-nematic squeezed states through spin-mixing dynamics, an atomic analogue of optical four-wave mixing. The squeezed states are refocused back to the vicinity of the classical initial state by a state-flip operation that resembles spin-echo techniques, which leads to encoded phases preferentially amplified over noise. Using a large ensemble of 26,400 atoms, we observe a sensitivity of 15.6 ± 0.5 dB beyond the standard quantum limit for detecting small-angle Rabi rotation, as well as 16.6 ± 1.1 dB for phase sensing in a Ramsey-like interferometry application. Our results highlight the many-body coherence of spin-nematic squeezed states and point to their possible quantum metrological application in atomic magnetometers, atomic clocks and fundamental tests of Lorentz symmetry violations.

Abstract:Precise phase measurements by interferometers are crucial in science for detecting subtle changes, such as gravitational waves. However, phase sensitivity is typically limited by the standard quantum limit (SQL) with uncorrelated particles N. This limit can be surpassed using quantum correlations, but achieving high-quality correlations in large systems is challenging. Here, we propose and demonstrate an atom-light hybrid quantum interferometry whose sensitivity is enhanced beyond the SQL with atom-light quantum correlation and newly developed phase comb superposition via atomic-memory-assisted multiple quantum amplification. Finally, a phase sensitivity beyond the SQL of up to $8.3\pm 0.2$ dB is achieved, especially at $N=4 \times10^{13}/s$, resulting in both atomic and optical phase sensitivities of $6\times10^{-8} rad/\sqrt{Hz}$. This technique can advance sensitive quantum measurements in various fields.

Abstract:Quantum-enhanced sensors, which surpass the standard quantum limit (SQL) and approach the fundamental precision limits dictated by quantum mechanics, are finding applications across a wide range of scientific fields. This quantum advantage becomes particularly significant when a large number of particles are included in the sensing circuit. Achieving such enhancement requires introducing and preserving entanglement among many particles, posing significant experimental challenges. In this work, we integrate concepts from Floquet theory and quantum information to design an entangler capable of generating the desired entanglement between two paths of a quantum interferometer. We demonstrate that our path-entangled states enable sensing beyond the SQL, reaching the fundamental Heisenberg limit (HL) of quantum mechanics. Moreover, we show that a decoding parity measurement maintains the HL when specific conditions from Floquet theory are satisfied$\unicode{x2013}$particularly those related to the periodic driving parameters that preserve entanglement during evolution. We address the effects of a priori phase uncertainty and imperfect transmission, showing that our method remains robust under realistic conditions. Finally, we propose a superconducting-circuit implementation of our sensor in the microwave regime, highlighting its potential for practical applications in high-precision measurements.

Quantum-enhanced sensing on an optical transition via emergent collective quantum correlations

Abstract:The control over quantum states in atomic systems has led to the most precise optical atomic clocks to date. Their sensitivity is currently bounded by the standard quantum limit, a fundamental floor set by quantum mechanics for uncorrelated particles, which can nevertheless be overcome when operated with entangled particles. Yet demonstrating a quantum advantage in real world sensors is extremely challenging and remains to be achieved aside from two remarkable examples, LIGO and more recently HAYSTAC. Here we illustrate a pathway for harnessing scalable entanglement in an optical transition using 1D chains of up to 51 ions with state-dependent interactions that decay as a power-law function of the ion separation. We show our sensor can be made to behave as a one-axis-twisting (OAT) model, an iconic fully connected model known to generate scalable squeezing. The collective nature of the state manifests itself in the preservation of the total transverse magnetization, the reduced growth of finite momentum spin-wave excitations, the generation of spin squeezing comparable to OAT (a Wineland parameter of $-3.9 \pm 0.3$ dB for only N = 12 ions) and the development of non-Gaussian states in the form of atomic multi-headed cat states in the Q-distribution. The simplicity of our protocol enables scalability to large arrays with minimal overhead, opening the door to advances in timekeeping as well as new methods for preserving coherence in quantum simulation and computation. We demonstrate this in a Ramsey-type interferometer, where we reduce the measurement uncertainty by $-3.2 \pm 0.5$ dB below the standard quantum limit for N = 51 ions.

Abstract:State-of-the-art atomic clocks are based on the precise detection of the energy difference between two atomic levels, which is measured in terms of the quantum phase accumulated over a given time interval<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-3006-1#ref-CR4">4</a>. The stability of optical-lattice clocks (OLCs) is limited both by the interrupted interrogation of the atomic system by the local-oscillator laser (Dick noise<a href="/articles/s41586-020-3006-1#ref-CR5">5</a>) and by the standard quantum limit (SQL) that arises from the quantum noise associated with discrete measurement outcomes. Although schemes for removing the Dick noise have been recently proposed and implemented<a href="/articles/s41586-020-3006-1#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-3006-1#ref-CR8">8</a>, performance beyond the SQL by engineering quantum correlations (entanglement) between atoms<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="#ref-CR11">11</a>,<a href="#ref-CR12">12</a>,<a href="#ref-CR13">13</a>,<a href="#ref-CR14">14</a>,<a href="#ref-CR15">15</a>,<a href="#ref-CR16">16</a>,<a href="#ref-CR17">17</a>,<a href="#ref-CR18">18</a>,<a href="#ref-CR19">19</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-3006-1#ref-CR20">20</a> has been demonstrated only in proof-of-principle experiments with microwave clocks of limited stability. The generation of entanglement on an optical-clock transition and operation of an OLC beyond the SQL represent important goals in quantum metrology, but have not yet been demonstrated experimentally<a href="/articles/s41586-020-3006-1#ref-CR16">16</a>. Here we report the creation of a many-atom entangled state on an OLC transition, and use it to demonstrate a Ramsey sequence with an Allan deviation below the SQL after subtraction of the local-oscillator noise. We achieve a metrological gain of $4.{4}_{-0.4}^{+0.6}$ decibels over the SQL by using an ensemble consisting of a few hundred ytterbium-171 atoms, corresponding to a reduction of the averaging time by a factor of 2.8 ± 0.3. Our results are currently limited by the phase noise of the local oscillator and Dick noise, but demonstrate the possible performance improvement in state-of-the-art OLCs<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-3006-1#ref-CR4">4</a> through the use of entanglement. Unconditional and Robust Quantum Metrological Advantage beyond N00N States

Abstract:Quantum metrology employs quantum resources to enhance the measurement sensitivity beyond that can be achieved classically. While multiphoton entangled N00N states can in principle beat the shot-noise limit and reach the Heisenberg limit, high N00N states are difficult to prepare and fragile to photon loss which hinders them from reaching unconditional quantum metrological advantages. Here, we combine the idea of unconventional nonlinear interferometers and stimulated emission of squeezed light, previously developed for the photonic quantum computer Jiuzhang, to propose and realize a new scheme that achieves a scalable, unconditional, and robust quantum metrological advantage. We observe a 5.8(1)-fold enhancement above the shot-noise limit in the Fisher information extracted per photon, without discounting for photon loss and imperfections, which outperforms ideal 5-N00N states. The Heisenberg-limited scaling, the robustness to external photon loss, and the ease-of-use of our method make it applicable in practical quantum metrology at a low photon flux regime. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.130.070801 © 2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:The highest precision achievable for a two-mode (two-path) classical interferometer is bounded by 1/root N (with N being the number of particles participating in the measurement process). This bound is called the classical limit or the standard quantum limit. It is possible to beat this limit by introducing quantum entanglement among the particles such that quantum projection noise from different particles cancels out. Twin-Fock state is one type of such entangled states. It is made up of indistinguishable bosons equally distributed in two orthogonal modes (exactly half (N/2) in each mode). In the past, either through optical spontaneous parametric-down-conversion or through quantum-gate operations on trapped ions, twin-Fock states consisting of no more than 10 photons or ions have been realized. In recent years, twin-Fock states made up of a few thousand atoms have been generated using spin-mixing dynamics in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). However, these twin-Fock states exhibit huge fluctuation in particle numbers, thereby limiting their potential applications. We recently generated twin-Fock states of about 11000 atoms in a deterministic manner by driving a spin-1 BEC through quantum critical points (QCPs) slowly. Even though substantial excitations occur while crossing the QCP regions during the drive, this method is capable of generating highly entangled twin-Fock states because of the very different structures of the system's low-lying eigenstates across the QCPs. The samples we prepare feature a number squeezing of 10.7 +/- 0.6 decibels and a normalized collective spin length of 0.99 +/- 0.01. Together, they infer a minimum entanglement cluster (or entanglement breadth) of 910 atoms. This article introduces the background and advancement of this research.
High-dynamic-range atomic clocks with dual Heisenberg-limited precision scaling

Abstract:Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state is a maximally multiparticle entangled state capable of reaching the fundamental precision limit in quantum sensing. While GHZ-state-based atomic clocks hold the potential to achieve Heisenberg-limited precision [Nature 634, 315 (2024); Nature 634, 321 (2024)], they suffer from a reduced dynamic range. Here we demonstrate how Bayesian quantum estimation can be utilized to extend the dynamic range of GHZ-state-based atomic clocks while maintaining precision close to the Heisenberg limit. In the framework of Bayesian quantum estimation, we design a sequence of correlated Ramsey interferometry for atomic clocks utilizing individual and cascaded GHZ <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://states.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this sequence, the interrogation time is updated based on the credible intervals of the posterior <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://distribution.By" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> combining an interferometry sequence with short and long interrogation times, our scheme overcomes the trade-off between sensitivity and dynamic range in GHZ-state-based atomic clocks and offers an alternative approach for extending dynamic range while maintaining high sensitivity. Notably our approach enables dual Heisenberg-limited precision scaling with respect to both particle number and total interrogation time. In addition to atomic clocks, our study offers a promising avenue for developing high-dynamic-range entanglement-enhanced interferometry-based quantum sensors.

Abstract:Entanglement is a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics and holds great promise for enhancing metrology and communications. Much of the focus of quantum metrology so far has been on generating highly entangled quantum states that offer better sensitivity, per resource, than what can be achieved classically. However, to reach the ultimate limits in multi-parameter quantum metrology and quantum information processing tasks, collective measurements, which generate entanglement between multiple copies of the quantum state, are necessary. Here, we experimentally demonstrate theoretically optimal single- and two-copy collective measurements for simultaneously estimating two non-commuting qubit rotations. This allows us to implement quantum-enhanced sensing, for which the metrological gain persists for high levels of decoherence, and to draw fundamental insights about the interpretation of the uncertainty principle. We implement our optimal measurements on superconducting, trapped-ion and photonic systems, providing an indication of how future quantum-enhanced sensing networks may look.

Entanglement-enhanced Synchronous Differential Comparison

Abstract:Quantum entanglement of atoms enables precision measurement and frequency metrology beyond the stan-dard quantum limit that is imposed by the quantum projection noise. Here we propose employing entangled atoms in the synchronous differential measurement to enhance the detection sensitivity of spatially dependent frequency shift. Two ways of engineering entangled atoms are studied. The synchronous comparison between two pixels within an entangled atomic cloud leads to a sensitivity enhancement factor of 1.4 over the standard quantum limit. The sensitivity enhancement becomes saturated for a large number of atoms. In contrast, the synchronous comparison between two independent pixels that are individually composed of entangled atoms allows for a strong sensitivity enhancement by a factor of, for example, about 10 with 103 entangled atoms in each pixel, corresponding to a reduction of the averaging time by a factor of about 102. A large atom number may further elevate the sensitivity. Our work paves the way towards the entanglement-enhanced detection of gravitational redshift by means of the in situ imaging spectroscopy.

Abstract:Multipartite entangled states are significant resources for both quantum information processing and quantum metrology. In particular, non-Gaussian entangled states are predicted to achieve a higher sensitivity of precision measurements than Gaussian states. On the basis of metrological sensitivity, the conventional linear Ramsey squeezing parameter (RSP) efficiently characterizes the Gaussian entangled atomic states but fails for much wider classes of highly sensitive non-Gaussian states. These complex non-Gaussian entangled states can be classified by the nonlinear squeezing parameter (NLSP), as a generalization of the RSP with respect to nonlinear observables and identified via the Fisher information. However, the NLSP has never been measured experimentally. Using a 19-qubit programmable superconducting processor, we report the characterization of multiparticle entangled states generated during its nonlinear dynamics. First, selecting ten qubits, we measure the RSP and the NLSP by single-shot readouts of collective spin operators in several different directions. Then, by extracting the Fisher information of the time-evolved state of all 19 qubits, we observe a large metrological gain of 9.89_{-0.29}^{+0.28} dB over the standard quantum limit, indicating a high level of multiparticle entanglement for quantum-enhanced phase sensitivity. Benefiting from high-fidelity full controls and addressable single-shot readouts, the superconducting processor with interconnected qubits provides an ideal platform for engineering and benchmarking non-Gaussian entangled states that are useful for quantum-enhanced metrology.

Abstract:It has been suggested that both quantum superpositions and nonlinear interactions are important resources for quantum metrology. However, to date the different roles that these two resources play in the precision enhancement are not well understood. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a Heisenberg-scaling metrology to measure the parameter governing the nonlinear coupling between two different optical modes. The intense mode with n (more than 10^6 in our work) photons manifests its effect through the nonlinear interaction strength which is proportional to its average photon-number. The superposition state of the weak mode, which contains only a single photon, is responsible for both the linear Hamiltonian and the scaling of the measurement precision. By properly preparing the initial state of single photon and making projective photon-counting measurement, the extracted classical Fisher information (FI) can saturate the quantum FI embedded in the combined state after coupling, which is n^2 and leads to a practical precision 1.2/n. Free from the utilization of entanglement, our work paves a way to realize Heisenberg-scaling precision when only a linear Hamiltonian is involved.

Abstract:Developing superior quantum sensing strategies ranging from ultrahigh precision measurements to complex structural analyses is at the heart of quantum technologies. Although strategies to enhance the sensing precision using quantum resources, such as entanglement among sensors, have been abundantly demonstrated, the signal correlation among quantum sensors is rarely exploited. Here we develop a new sensing paradigm that exploits the signal correlation among multiple quantum sensors to resolve overlapping signals from multiple targets that individual sensors cannot resolve and complex structural construction techniques struggles with. By using three nitrogen-vacancy centres as a quantum electrometer system, we demonstrate this multisensor paradigm by resolving the fluctuating electric fields of individual defects from ensemble signals. We image the three-dimensional distribution of 16 dark electronic point defects in a diamond with accuracy approaching 1.7 nm via a GPS-like localization method. Furthermore, we obtain the real-time charge dynamics of individual point defects and visualize how the dynamics induce the well-known optical spectral diffusion. The multisensor paradigm extends the quantum sensing toolbox and offers new possibilities for structural analysis.

Abstract:A central theme in quantum information science is to coherently control an increasing number of quantum particles as well as their internal and external degrees of freedom (DoFs), meanwhile maintaining a high level of coherence. The ability to create and verify multiparticle entanglement with individual control and measurement of each qubit serves as an important benchmark for quantum technologies. To this end, genuine multipartite entanglement have been reported up to 14 trapped ions, 10 photons, and 10 superconducting qubits. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an 18-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entanglement by simultaneous exploiting three different DoFs of six photons, including their paths, polarization, and orbital angular momentum (OAM). We develop high-stability interferometers for reversible quantum logic operations between the photon's different DoFs with precision and efficiencies close to unity, enabling simultaneous readout of 262,144 outcome combinations of the 18-qubit state. A state fidelity of 0.708(16) is measured, confirming the genuine entanglement of all the 18 qubits.
