Abstract:Cadmium telluride (CdTe) has been proven to be an attractive mid-infrared (MIR) material with a large refractive index (~2.68 at 4.5 μm) and broadband transparency (~1 to 25 μm). CdTe microwires (MWs) with diameters from a few to about ten micrometers were fabricated by a thermal evaporation process. MIR light was coupled into and guided through individual MWs. Excellent optical waveguiding properties of these MWs are experimentally obtained within MIR spectral range (up to 8.6 μm), with waveguiding losses from 1.3 to 13 dB/cm. Our results show that CdTe MWs can be used as wavelength or subwavelength-width waveguides for MIR microphotonics or circuits.
Submicron and Nano-Diameter Silica Wires for Optical Wave Guiding

Abstract:Based on the exact solutions of Maxwell's equations, we have studied the basic theoretical properties of submicron and nano-diameter air-cladding silica-wire waveguides. The single-mode condition and the modal field of the fundamental modes have been obtained. Silica wires with diameters of 100-1000nm and lengths ranging from hundreds of micrometer to over 1 millimeter have been fabricated. SEM examination shows that these wires have uniform diameters and smooth surfaces, which are favorable for optical wave guiding. Light has been sent into these wires by optical coupling, and guiding light through a bent wire has also been demonstrated. These wires are promising for assembling photonic devices on a micron or submicron scale.

Abstract:Subwavelength-diameter silica wires fabricated using a taper-drawing approach exhibit excellent diameter uniformity and atomic-level smoothness, making them suitable for low-loss optical wave guiding from the UV to the near-infrared. Such air-clad silica wires can be used as single-mode waveguides; depending on wavelength and wire diameter, they either tightly confine the optical fields or leave a certain amount of guided energy outside the wire in the form of evanescent waves. Using these wire waveguides as building blocks we assembled microscale optical components such as linear waveguides, waveguide bends and branch couplers on a low-index, non-dissipative silica aerogel substrate. These components are much smaller than comparable existing devices and have low optical loss, indicating that the wire-assembly technique presented here has great potential for developing microphotonics devices for future applications in a variety of fields such as optical communication, optical sensing and high-density optical integration.

Abstract:Single-mode optical wave guiding properties of silica and silicon subwavelength-diameter wires are studied with exact solutions of Maxwell's equations. Single mode conditions, modal fields, power distribution, group velocities and waveguide dispersions are studied. It shows that air-clad subwavelength-diameter wires have interesting properties such as tight-confinement ability, enhanced evanescent fields and large waveguide dispersions that are very promising for developing future microphotonic devices with subwavelength-width structures.
Synthesis of optical-quality single-crystal β-BaB2O 4 microwires and nanowires

Abstract:The synthesis of optical quality -barium borate microwires and nanowires (MNWs) is reported using an organic-free hydrothermal method with BaCl2 center dot 6H2O, NaOH, and H3BO3 as source materials, and assisted with post-annealing. As-synthesized MNWs, with diameters ranging from 500 nm to 2 m and lengths up to several hundred micrometers, show good optical-waveguiding capabilities. Based on evanescent coupling between a single BBO MNW waveguide and a fiber taper, propagation losses of 0.30 dB m1 (at 532 nm) and 0.21 dB m1 (at 671 nm) are evaluated, respectively. An evident second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal at 532 nm with a measured conversion efficiency of about 8.4% is observed when excited by waveguided 1064 nm, picosecond laser pulses within a BBO MNW with a length of the order of 100 m. The dependence of the SHG conversion efficiency on the MNW diameter is also investigated. These results show a much-higher SHG efficiency for BBO single-crystal MNWs compared with bulk crystal, which suggests potential applications in future micro-/nanoscale nonlinear optical applications such as optical modulation and frequency conversion.

Abstract:Compact wavelength-sensitive optical components are desirable for optical information processing and communication in photonic integrated system. In this work, optical waveguiding along single composition-graded CdS(x)Se(1-x) nanowires were systematically investigated. Under a focused laser excitation, the excited light can be guided passively along the bandgap-increased direction of the nanowire, keeping the photonic energy of the guided light almost unchanged during the whole propagation. In comparison, the excited light is guided actively through incessantly repeated band-to-band reabsorption and re-emitting processes along the bandgap-decreased direction, resulting in a gradual wavelength conversion during propagation. On the basis of this wavelength-converted waveguiding, a concept of nanoscale wavelength splitter is demonstrated by assembling a graded nanowire with several composition-uniform nanowires into branched nanowire structure. Our study indicates that composition-graded semiconductor nanowires would open new exciting opportunities in developing new wavelength-sensitive optical components for integrated nanophotonic devices.
10-W-level CW waveguiding in an optical micro/nanofiber

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) with a diameter below or close to the wavelength of the light, have attracted significant interest for applications ranging from optical sensing, nonlinear optics, to optomechanics and atom optics. While continuous-wave (CW) optical waveguiding is frequently adopted, so far most of the MNFs are operated in a low-power region (e.g., < 0.1 W). Here we demonstrate high-power CW optical waveguiding around 1550-nm wavelength in a silica MNF with power up to 13 W, which is more than 30 times higher than demonstrated previously. Our results may pave a way towards high-power MNF optics, for both scientific research and technological applications.

Abstract:As miniature fibre-optic platforms, micro/nanofibres (MNFs) taper-drawn from silica fibres have been widely studied for applications from optical sensing, nonlinear optics to optomechanics and atom optics. While continuous-wave (CW) optical waveguiding is frequently adopted, so far almost all MNFs are operated in low-power region (e.g., <0.1 W). Here, we demonstrate high- power low-loss CW optical waveguiding in MNFs around 1550-nm wavelength. We show that a pristine MNF, even with a diameter down to 410 nm, can waveguide an optical power higher than 10 W, which is about 30 times higher than demonstrated previously. Also, we predict an optical damage threshold of 70 W. In highpower CW waveguiding MNFs, we demonstrate high-speed optomechanical driving of microparticles in air, and second harmonic generation efficiency higher than those pumped by short pulses. Our results may pave a way towards high-power MNF optics, for both scientific research and technological applications.

Abstract:With diameters close to the wavelength of the guided light, optical microfibers (MFs) can guide light with tight optical confinement, strong evanescent fields and manageable waveguide dispersion and have been widely investigated in the past decades for a variety of applications. Compared to silica MFs, which are ideal for working in visible and near-infrared regions, chalcogenide glass (ChG) MFs are promising for mid-infrared (mid-IR) optics, owing to their easy fabrication, broad-band transparency and high nonlinearity, and have been attracting increasing attention in applications ranging from near-field coupling and molecular sensing to nonlinear optics. Here, we review this emerging field, mainly based on its progress in the last decade. Starting from the high-temperature taper drawing technique for MF fabrication, we introduce basic mid-IR waveguiding properties of typical ChG MFs made of As2S3 and As2Se3. Then, we focus on ChG-MF-based passive optical devices, including optical couplers, resonators and gratings and active and nonlinear applications of ChG MFs for mid-IR Raman lasers, frequency combs and supercontinuum (SC) generation. MF-based spectroscopy and chemical/biological sensors are also introduced. Finally, we conclude the review with a brief summary and an outlook on future challenges and opportunities of ChG MFs.
Self-phase Modulation in Single CdTe Nanowires

Abstract:We measure the transmission of near-infrared ps pulses through single CdTe nanowires. Benefitting from the strong light confinement and large effective nonlinearity of these nanowires, a significant spectral broadening of similar to 5 nm and nonlinear phase shift of a few pi due to self-phase modulation (SPM) is observed experimentally at coupled peak power of a dozen W with a propagating length down to several hundred grns. A nonlinear-index coefficient (n(2)) as high as (9.5 +/- 1.4) x 10(-17) m(2)/W at 1550 nm is extracted from transmission spectra, corresponding to a nonlinear parameter (gamma) of similar to 1050 W-1 m(-1). The simulations indicate a spectral broadening more than 1.5 gm in single nanowire when pumped by fs pulses in anomalous dispersion regime. The obtained results suggest that, CdTe nanowire is promising in developing ultracompact nonlinear optical devices for microphotonic circuits. Abstract:A germanium-based platform with a large core-clad index contrast, germanium-on-silicon nitride waveguide, is demonstrated at mid-infrared wavelength. Simulations are performed to verify the feasibility of this structure. This structure is realized by first bonding a silicon-nitride-deposited germanium-on-silicon donor wafer onto a silicon substrate wafer, followed by the layer transfer approach to obtain germanium-on-silicon nitride structure, which is scalable to all wafer sizes. The misfit dislocations which initially form along the interface between germanium/silicon can be removed by chemical mechanical polishing after layer transfer process resulting in a high-quality germanium layer. At the mid-infrared wavelength of 3.8 μm, the germanium-on-silicon nitride waveguide has a propagation loss of 3.35 ± 0.5 dB/cm and a bend loss of 0.14 ± 0.01 dB/bend for a radius of 5 μm for the transverse-electric mode.
Mid-infrared Nonlinear Silicon Hybrid Waveguide with High Figure of Merit

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) integrated waveguides with strong local field enhancement and relatively low loss have shown their potential in nonlinear optical applications. We present a novel highly nonlinear silicon hybrid waveguide by setting an insulator-metal-insulator structure with [2-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-3-([4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]ethynyl)buta-1,3-diene-1,1,4,4-tetracarbonitrile] (DDMEBT) and silver materials into the silicon slot. The mode field is strongly confined in the DDMEBT layers via the surface plasmon polariton effect. Two rectangular silicon nanobridges are used to further confine the optical field and reduce the loss simultaneously. The waveguide dimensions are optimized to obtain a figure of merit as high as 0.55 at 2.1 mu m and a zero-dispersion wavelength of 2.06 mu m. In a 6.6-mm-long waveguide, a maximum four-wave mixing efficiency of -6.65 dB and a bandwidth of 512 nm (1.894-2.406 mu m) can be simultaneously obtained, pumped by a 2.104-mu m source with a power of only 500 mW. Our designed waveguide exhibits excellent overall performance for nonlinear optical applications such as all-optical signal processing in the MIR band. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Single crystalline microwires and polycrystalline microtwists were self-assembled from X-shaped conjugated molecules through solution process in high yield. The excellent long-range optical waveguide ability and efficient light transfer between wires made the as-prepared microwires potential building blocks for complex optical devices at micrometer scale. By slight structural change, well-dispersed polycrystalline microtwists were also successfully obtained. We further demonstrated that such chiral structures could also be used as optical waveguiding materials. The investigation of photo waveguide property in the well-dispersed single microtwist is the first demonstration of chiral microstructures in the application of optical waveguide, which opens the possibility of coupling the chirality of material to that of light.

Abstract:Si photonic wire waveguides are attractive for constructing various optical devices that are extremely small because the waveguides can be bent with extremely small curvatures of less than a few micrometers of bending radius. We have fabricated optical directional couplers with the waveguides and demonstrated their fundamental characteristics. Their coupling length was extremely short, several micrometers, because of strong optical coupling between the waveguide cores. We have also demonstrated wavelength-demultiplexing functions for these devices with a long coupled waveguide. Optical outputs from a device with a 100-mum-long coupled waveguide changed reciprocally with a 20-nm wavelength spacing between the parallel and cross ports. We also demonstrated the operation of ultrasmall optical add-drop multiplexers (OADMs) with Bragg grating reflectors made up of the waveguides. The dropping wavelength bandwidth of the OADMs was less than 0.7 nm, and these dropping wavelengths could be precisely designed by adjusting the grating period. Using the Si photonic wire waveguide, we have also demonstrated thermo-optic switches. Metal thin-film heaters were evaporated onto the branch of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer that incorporated the waveguide to achieve switching operations by thermo-optic effects. In these switching operations, we observed more than 30 dB of extinction ratio, less than 90 mW of switching power, and less than 100 mus of switching speed

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate silicon-on-insulator (SOI) channel waveguides with propagation loss and $r$ = 10 $\mu$$\text{m}$ bends with bending loss as low as 2 dB/cm and 0.02 dB/90 $^{\circ }$ in the broad wavelength range of 3.68–3.88 $\mu$ $\text{m}$. We also indicate the limitation of SOI waveguide loss in mid-infrared wavelength by analyzing loss mechanisms. Based on this high-performance mid-infrared waveguide, we systematically analyze the coupling efficiency of various directional couplers, which are critical and commonly used building blocks for on-chip light routing and power splitting. By varying coupling length and sweeping wavelength, the performance of directional coupler with various gap separations is meticulously investigated in 3.68–3.88 $\mu$ $\text{m}$. A experimental database for directional coupler with any power splitting ratio is provided. Our results offer a promising broadband platform for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and applications that require precise control of coupling such as racetrack resonator in the mid-infrared region.

Abstract:We have demonstrated what we believe to be the first waveguide photonic crystal cavity operating in the mid-infrared. The devices were fabricated from Ge23Sb7S70 chalcogenide glass on CaF2 substrates by combing photolithographic patterning and focus ion beam milling. The waveguide-coupled cavities were characterized using a fiber end fire coupling method at 5.2 {\mu}m wavelength, and a loaded quality factor of ~ 2,000 was measured near the critical coupling regime.

Abstract:A one-time etching suspended microracetrack resonator with lateral sub-wavelength-grating (SWG) metamaterial cladding is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated on commercial 340 nm-thick-top-silicon silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform for mid-infrared (MIR) bio-chemical sensing applications. The suspended structure can offer a larger exposed area of waveguides with the testing chemicals as well as a decent sensitivity. And the one-time etching process also eases the fabrication. The suspended waveguide is optimized with a balance between propagation loss and the sensitivity. The suspended microracetrack resonator is experimentally measured at 2 μm wavelength and well fitted with an extinction ratio (ER) of 12.3 dB and a full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 0.12 nm, which corresponds to a quality factor (Q factor) of 16600. With the equivalent refractive index method and a specially developed numerical model, the expected sensitivities of fundamental TE and TM mode were calculated as 58 nm/RIU and 303 nm/RIU respectively. This one-time etching suspended microracetrack resonator shows great potential in MIR optical bio-chemical sensing applications.

Abstract:Glass-coated amorphous FeCuNbSiB microwires were prepared by Taylor-Ulitovsky technique. X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the microstructure and morphology of the glass-coated microwires respectively. The vibrating sample magnetometer and vector network analyzer were used to study the magnetostatic and microwave properties of glass-coated microwires. The experimental results show that the effective anisotropy of an array of 150 microwires of 10 mm in length is large than that of one microwire of 10 mm in diameter and an array of 150 microwires of 1 mm in diameter. The natural ferromagnetic resonance takes place as the microwave magnetic component is perpendicular to the microwires axis, and the electric dipole resonance takes place as the microwire is long or the short microwire concentration is moderate. The natural ferromagnetic resonance shifts to higher frequency with the larger microwire concentration. The electric dipole resonance is governed by the microwires length and concentration. The glass-coated FeCuNbSiB microwires can be used to design EMI filters and microwave absorbing materials.

Abstract:Continuous-wave (CW) mid-infrared (MIR) wavelength conversion is experimentally demonstrated using degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) between two thulium-doped fiber (TDF) lasers in a silicon waveguide. One TDF laser is homemade with a high power and tunable wavelength, while the other one is a commercial product. The conversion efficiency is measured with respect to the pump power and the signal wavelength detuning. In the 2 μm MIR band, the measured 3 dB conversion bandwidth is 52 nm. It verifies the feasibility of FWM-based wavelength conversion based on silicon waveguides in future MIR optical communication systems.
