Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10−2 which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:We propose a kind of square porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for polarization-maintaining terahertz (THz) wave guidance. An asymmetry is introduced by implementing rectangular array air holes in the porous core of the PCF, and ultrahigh birefringence and low effective material loss (EML) can be achieved simultaneously. The properties of THz wave propagation are analyzed numerically in detail. The numerical results indicate that the proposed fiber offers a high birefringence of 0.063 and a low EML of 0.081 cm(-1) at 1 THz. Moreover, a very low flattened dispersion profile is observed over a wide frequency domain of 0.85-1.9 THz. The zero flattened dispersion can be controlled. It is predicted that this PCF would be used potentially in polarization maintaining and dispersion management of THz waves. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A novel design featuring a porous core photonic crystal fiber (PC-PCF) is proposed in this paper for terahertz (THz) waveguide application. This work uses finite element method (FEM) and a boundary condition related to perfectly matched layer (PML) for analyzing the guiding properties. This methodology is supported by a fiber type featuring a slotted core and slotted cladding, utilizing Zeonex as the material. It offers high birefringence valued at 0.0978, small confinement loss of 10 −14 dB/cm, a meager amount of effective material loss (EML) valued at 0.011697 dB/cm and a very high core power fraction (CPF) of 67.156%. Additionally, it shows a flattened pattern of dispersion measuring 0.4 ± 0.2 ps/THz/cm at an extensive frequency range of 0.5 THz to 2 THz. Other significant waveguide properties: effective refractive index, numerical aperture (NA), V-parameter, effective area, spot size, and beam divergence of the suggested fiber are numerically analyzed and conferred thoroughly. Regarding its mode of operation, the proposed fiber primarily functions in multimode, but it can also operate in single mode for higher porosity levels and lower core diameters. This unique characteristic renders the proposed PC-PCF structure well-suited for a broad range of applications, offering versatility as to its mode of operation.

Abstract:Abstract A numerical analysis of a hexagonal PCF structure with four circular air hole rings around the core has been presented in this paper. By utilizing a full vectorial finite element method with perfectly matched layers, propagation properties such as birefringence, chromatic dispersion and confinement losses are numericaly evaluated for the proposed PCF structure. Specifically, birefringence of 2.018 × 10 –2 , nonlinear coefficients of 40.682 W −1 km −1 , negative chromatic dispersion of − 47.72 ps/km.nm at 1.55 μm and − 21 to − 105 ps/km.nm at the telecommunication band of C-U have been reported.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, five layers of hexagonal cladding and two elliptical air holes based on photonic crystal fiber are discussed highly for many communication areas by decreasing different types of losses such as effective material loss (EML), scattering loss, and confinement loss in the terahertz (THz) waveguiding. Our suggested fiber (H-PCF) and all simulation results are obtained with the finite element method (FEM) and the perfectly matched layer (PML) boundary conditions based COMSOL Multiphysics software have been used to design in the THz region. After investigating all the graphical results, this optical communication-related H-PCF fiber discloses an extremely low effective material loss (EML) of 0.0184 cm−1, with an effective area of 7.07×10-8 m2 and flow of power in the core region of 88% at 1 terahertz (THz). Here, other simulation parameters such as confinement loss, scattering loss, and V-parameter are also presented with a proper graph. So, we can easily say that the reported H-PCF fiber is strongly appropriate for different types of short and long-distance communication applications in the terahertz (THz) wave pulse region.

Abstract:For high birefringence photonic crystal fibres (PCF) operating in terahertz (THz) regime, an outstanding model of slotted porous core with triangular lattice-based hexagonal shape cladding has been presented in this study. In this proposed THz-PCF, a five-layer circular air holes arranged in hexagon configuration have been placed in the cladding area, and five rectangular air holes have been positioned in core region for investigating the THz-PCF in polarization maintaining applications. The asymmetrical rectangular slots in core area creates difference between x and y polarized THz waves to offer high birefringence. The compact geometry of hexagonal structure in cladding offers more useful power confinement. The designed PCF offers high birefringence of 0.0866, low effective material loss of 0.0786 cm −1 , core power fraction of 42.7%, less confinement loss of 0.02598 cm −1 , low dispersion of 0.0963 ps/THz/cm and very less effective area of 0.03 μm 2 in a broad frequency range of 0.1–2.3 THz, according to the Finite Element Method based simulation results in COMSOL Multiphysics software. These features enable the proposed PCF to be a better choice for numerous applications like polarization filtering, sensing, short distance communication, etc. in THz photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:In this article, a hexagonal-shaped porous core and sectored-cladding structured photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is presented for efficient wave propagation in Terahertz (THz) domain. The full vector analysis based finite element method with Comsol software (v. 5.3a) is employed to design and optimize the PCF geometry and evaluate its optical properties. The PCF geometry demonstrates polarization maintaining attributes with a significant distinction between x and y polarization modes. The proposed PCF exhibits an ultra-low effective material loss of 0.013 cm −1 and 0.020 cm −1 in x and y polarization modes, respectively with a flattened dispersion of ± 0.020 ps/THz/cm and ± 0.065 ps/THz/cm in the respective modes at 1 THz. Additionally, the proposed PCF structure is investigated for sensing different liquid chemicals (cholesterol, methanol, ethanol, and benzene) and air pollutants (cyanide, dioxin, nitrogen oxide, and hydrogen sulfide). It is shown that the proposed PCF can outperform a number of recently reported designs in the literature. The fabrication potential of the PCF are also discussed in the context of present developments in manufacturing.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) circular photonic crystal fiber (CPCF) with the similar distribution of air holes as that in variable-size circular photonic crystal in polyethylene material was introduced. Guiding and dispersion properties of the CPCF with different parameters have been accurately computed. Results show that the CPCF is a useful terahertz waveguide which has good ability to confine THz fields, low group-velocity dispersion parameter and low relative dispersion slope. Furthermore, the polyethylene material that is transparent to terahertz wave is inexpensive and easy to operate.

Abstract:We present the modeling of a porous core dispersion flatten photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for the fruitful transmission of THz signals. The model comprises only rectangular holes in both core and cladding areas. The model is numerically studied through simulation employing the finite element method (FEM)-based software. Simulation results disclose an insignificant amount of confinement loss (CL) of 8.01 × 10–5 cm−1 at 1.1 THz in the x-polarization mode. Besides, the effective material loss (EML) is only 2.2 × 10–3 cm−1 at the point. These values ensure a negligible amount of losses present at the modeled waveguide. The model offers a high numerical aperture. The power fraction for this model is 45% in the x-polarization mode at 1.1 THz. One of the splendid properties of the presented model is the ultra-flatten dispersion of approximately ± 0.004 ps/THz/cm, which ensures an insignificant amount of pulse broadening while applying this model in communication fields. The simple structure involving rectangles as well as desired values for optical parameters enhance the fruitfulness and fabrication feasibility of the presented THz waveguide. Thereby, the proposed sensor offers compound features, for instance, low CL, low EML, high NA, high power fraction, and flatten dispersion simultaneously.

Abstract:A new type of highly birefringent polyethylene rectangular lattice photonic crystal fiber (RLPCF) was investigated. This PCF can operate at single-polarization single-mode (SPSM). By changing the structure parameters of the RLPCF, the mode index of the two linearly polarized principal states can be designed. Results show that the PCF has higher birefringence than regular RLPCF. Furthermore, the polyethylene material that is transparent to terahertz wave is inexpensive and easy to operate. This PCF is an effective component for some THz systems.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, a low loss circular photonic crystal fiber (C-PCF) has been suggested as Terahertz (THz) waveguide. Both the core and cladding vicinity of the suggested PCF are constituted by circular-shaped air holes. The optical properties such as effective material loss, effective area, core power fraction and V-parameter have numerically been probed by utilizing full vectorial finite element method (FEM) with perfectly matched layers (FMLs) boundary condition. The reported PCF reveals low absorption loss and large effective area of 0.04 cm −1 and 2.80×10 −07 m 2 respectively at 1 THz operating frequency. In addition, the core power fraction of the fiber is about 50.83 % at the same activation frequency. The V-parameter shows that the proposed PCF acts as a single mode over 0.70 to 1.15 THz frequency. So, the reported PCF offers the best performance in long distance communication applications.

Abstract:A newer and efficient solid core with air holes and ring based circular photonic crystal fiber (C-PCF) design is proposed and studied. The SF2 doped ring core C-PCF structure with three layers of air holes is developed to communicate terahertz band in the range of 1–3 THz with >10−4 mode index separation. The finite element method (FEM) is used to optimize the position, shape and dimensions of air holes for the proposed PCF architecture and evaluate the efficiency to support different orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes for communication. Our novel fiber supports 98 stable OAM modes with mode purity above 0.86 for all modes. Low Confinement loss (<10−11 dB/cm), high effective mode area (>∼ 0.1 mm2) and low dispersion (<0.02 ps/THz/cm) are achieved for the proposed design. The proposed fiber has the potential for next-generation THz applications.

Highly Birefringent Photonic Crystal Fibers with Near-zero Flattened Dispersion for Polarization-Maintaining Terahertz Transmission

Abstract:In this work, we present a novel hexagonal lattice porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) exhibiting high birefringence, low loss, and near-zero flattened dispersion in the terahertz regime. The core design incorporates asymmetric rectangular and triangular air holes to achieve enhanced birefringence performance. The background material, TOPAS, is carefully selected to minimize dispersion and transmission losses. Furthermore, by employing the finite element method, the guiding properties of the proposed PCF are comprehensively investigated. Our simulation results reveal a near-zero flattened dispersion value of "±0.2ps∙THz^-1∙cm^-1" within a broad frequency range of "0.8-1.6THz" , accompanied by an impressive birefringence value of "0.072" . Additionally, the PCF demonstrates outstanding characteristics in terms of confinement loss, effective material loss, effective mode area, core power fraction, and bending loss. Considering its exceptional attributes, the proposed PCF holds significant promise for polarization-maintaining applications and terahertz communication systems.

Abstract:A one-dimensional photonic-crystal (PC) cavity with nanoholes is proposed for extreme enhancement of terahertz (THz) electric fields using the electromagnetic (EM) boundary conditions. Both slot (for the perpendicular component of the electric displacement field) and anti-slot (for the parallel component of the electric field) effects contribute to the considerable field enhancement. The EM energy density can be enhanced by a factor of (εh/εl)2 in the high-refractive-index material, where εh and εl are the permittivities of the high- and low-refractive-index materials, respectively. Correspondingly, the mode volume can be reduced by a factor of 288, compared with a conventional THz PC cavity, and is three orders of magnitude smaller than the diffraction limitation. Further, the proposed THz cavity design also supports modes with high quality factors (Q) > 104, which induces strong Purcell enhancement by a factor exceeding 106. Our THz cavity design is feasible and attractive for experimental demonstrations, because the semiconductor layer in which the EM is maximized can naturally be filled with quantum-engineered active materials. Thus, the proposed design can possibly be used to develop room-temperature coherent THz radiation sources.

Abstract:Abstract This analysis represents a circular shape based cladding with two elliptical shape cores in photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for the terahertz (THz) range. Here, we present a single-mode photonic crystal fiber (SM-PCF) with five layers of circular shape of air holes (CAH) structure along with two layers of elliptical shape of air holes (EAH) core configuration in the center to decrease the different types of losses. For broad-band communications, our proposed SM-PCF is highly useful due to the obtaining of ultra-low effective material loss (UML) in the terahertz regime. Perfectly matched layers (PMLs) and finite element method (FEM) established on COMSOL Multiphysics software has been used to design this PCF fiber. Simulated outcomes show a particularly an UML deficit of 0.014 cm −1 , power fraction in the core area (CA) and large effective area (EA) of 72%, and 5.90 × 10 −8 m 2 respectively at 1 terahertz (THz) frequency. Also, other aspects of optical fiber for THz signal banquet with confinement loss (CL), scattering loss (SL) and V-parameter have been calculated here. Moreover, our proposed SM-PCF shows single-mode propagation by V-parameter pointer over 0.80–3 THz frequency. So, we can say that our designed PCF fiber will be suitable for various effective communication areas at the terahertz (THz) spectrum.

Abstract:We investigate and simulate the light transmitting and coupling characteristics of surface mode waveguides (SMWs) based on photonic crystals (PhCs) with a triangular lattice of air holes. We demonstrate that surface waves can be efficiently propagated and served as a new kind of high-efficiency single-SMW-based filter with broad bandwidth in the outer space of PhCs. We also explore the highly efficient coupling of hetero-SMWs constructed by cascading different truncated surfaces. The coupling efficiency is insensitive to the interface position. Abstract:PCF denotes photonic crystal fiber which is utilized for terahertz (THz) waveguides and cladding in the shape of a hexagon with two elliptical air apertures (AHs), which are discussed. Such differentiation is made: When the frequency is 1 THz, effective material loss (EML) to a minimum of 0.028 cm-1 has been achieved. Making use of the heptagonal photonic crystal fiber (He-PCF) architecture, every simulation result utilizing COMSOL Multiphysics software implements the perfectly match layer (PML) and finite element method (FEM) boundary conditions. The He-PCF fiber demonstrates an effective mode loss (EML) of 0.028 cm-1 that is negligible, a substantial effective area (EA) measuring 7.31 × 10-8 m2 and an 80 % power concentration encompassing the central area at 1 THz frequency. Furthermore, regarding crucial optical guiding aspects like confinement loss, dispersion, and modality, a small study with respect to power fraction along with effective mode area (EMA) has again been conducted. Here, He-PCF THz waveguide is anticipated to provide a notable improvement in the current design for the communication field. 3D-printed terahertz subwavelength dual-core fibers with dense channel-integration

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) fiber that provides high-speed connections is an essential component in THz communication systems. The emerging space-division-multiplexing technology is expected to increase the transmission capacity of THz communications. A promising candidate to achieve that is integrating multiple channels in a compact THz multi-core fiber system. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a THz subwavelength rectangular dielectric dual-core fiber structure, where two identical cores can be densely integrated, thanks to the polarization-maintaining feature of the rectangular fiber. Different configurations, including the placements, core-spacings, and polarization states of two fiber cores, are comprehensively investigated to improve channel isolation. Numerical simulations show that the fractional power in core of fiber mode has a dominant effect on inter-core coupling performance. Moreover, we design the core size (1 mm x 0.5 mm) slightly less than the WR5.1 waveguide (1.295 mm x 0.6475 mm) so that the fiber can be conveniently connected with the WR5.1 flange port with mode excitation efficiencies up to 62.8%. A cost-efficient dielectric 3D printing technique is employed for rapid fabrications of dual-core fibers and corresponding polymer flange structures that offer solid integration between the fiber samples and the WR5.1 port. Experimental measurements demonstrate that a 4-mm core-spacing (less than three times the operation wavelengths over 0.17-0.21 THz) supports robust dual-channel propagation with channel isolation values more than 15 dB, which are consistent with theoretical and numerical results. This work provides a densely integrated dual-core fiber system with low fabrication cost and practical connection to the WR5.1 flange, holding exciting potential for high-capacity THz space-division-multiplexing communication systems.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) band is expected to satisfy the ever‐increasing demand for high‐capacity wireless data transfer. Multifunctional photonic devices with compactness and low loss are highly pursued for future THz communications. Here, a strategy for planar THz photonics is proposed that enables free wavefront manipulation with submillimeter thin liquid crystal polymer (LCP) films. Such elements work on the spatial geometric phase modulation, which is accomplished by preprogramming the axis orientations of LCP. The LCP monomers follow the guidance of local photoalignment agent and are further polymerized under UV exposure at the existence of a doped photo‐initializer. Thanks to the high resolution and excellent flexibility of the photopatterning technique, THz elements with versatile functions can be realized. As examples, waveplates, polarization gratings, and lenses, which are suitable for the polarization control, beam deflecting, focusing, or collimating, are demonstrated. Due to the intrinsic flexibility of LCP films, an f‐tunable lens enabled by mechanically induced deformation is exhibited. Specific mode generators for vortices and Bessel beams are also presented, which can function as separate channels for the mode division multiplexing in THz communications. Abstract:PCTF (pear-shaped conjoined-tube fiber) is presented as a new ultraviolet (UV) guiding fiber with low loss. Results indicate that two PCTFs have better properties than that of previous studies in the UV band. The total loss of two PCTFs is less than 1 dB/km, and its bandwidth exceeds 150 nm between 0.2 and 0.4 μm. Furthermore, PCTF's single-mode performance is very promising, as evidenced by the higher-order mode extinction ratio (HOMER) over 103. The fabrication tolerance is discussed in this paper and results show that the tolerance is good enough to fabricate by normal fiber drawing process. This fiber is promising in applications for nonlinear optics, ultrafast optics, high power laser, and quantum optics.
