Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the relationships of blood pressure (BP) with bone mineral density (BMD) in Chinese adults. Methods: The study was conducted among 3,445 participants aged at 52.5 ± 9.0 years old from PURE-China. During the 6-to-9-year follow-up during 2013–2017, some participants were selected to undergo a low dose abdominal CT scan with QCT capacity for BMD measurement of L 1–3. BMD (mg/cm3) were divided into three categories as normal bone mass (>120), osteopenia (80–120) and osteoporosis (<80). Then we compared blood pressure among various groups using ANOVA tests, and analyze the associations of blood pressure with BMD using ordinal logistic regression analysis adjusted for potential confounding factors. Results: Systolic/diastolic BP in normal bone mass group, osteopenia group and osteoporosis group were 127.8 ± 19.8/81.0 ± 11.7, 131.5 ± 20.8/82.2 ± 11.9 and 136.0 ± 22.9/81.7 ± 11.9 mmHg respectively (p < 0.001 for SBP and p = 0.037 for DBP), and respective pulse pressure were 46.8 ± 12.1, 49.3 ± 14.3 and 54.3 ± 15.6 mmHg (p < 0.001). Adjusted logistic analysis showed that SBP,DBP and pulse pressure were not related with BMD (p = 0.374, 0.651 and 0.341, respectively). Conclusion: Systolic BP and pulse pressure increased with the increasing of BMD. There was no significant relationship between Systolic/diastolic BP and pulse pressure and BMD.
