Abstract:Objectives: To compare the health literacy of hypertensive patients before and after health education. Self-efficacy is the theoretical basis of the health education. Methods: A total of 596 hypertensive patients were enrolled in 8 community health service centers in Shunyi District for 6 months’ intervention and follow-up. A total of 514 patients completed the follow-up. In the questionnaire, we used a self-designed hypertensive health literacy scale. We use propensity score matching to match hypertensive patients. The Match Tolerance is 0.01, 1: 1 match. Predictors are age, gender and educational level. We finally exactly match 100 pairs, fuzzily match 314 pairs. There was no significant difference in age, sex and education level between matched intervention group and control group. One-way Repeated Measures Anova were used to compare health literacy levels before and after intervention. Results: Before and after, the health literacy score are 8.16 ± 2.55 and 8.63 ± 2.49, significantly increased after intervention. F (1,411) = 10.501, P = 0.001. The communication ability are 1.67 ± 0.40 and 1.72 ± 0.37, F (1,413) = 4.343, P = 0.038, which were significantly increased after intervention. The reading comprehension ability are 2.24 ± 1.38 and 2.62 ± 1.32, F (1,411) = 21.138, P < 0.001, which were significantly increased after intervention. The numeracy are 2.56 ± 0.94 and 2.72 ± 0.82 before and after, F (1,413) = 6.654, P = 0.010, which was significantly increased after intervention. Conclusion: Health education based on self-efficacy is effective in improving the health literacy of hypertensive patients. After the intervention, the total score, communication ability, reading comprehension ability and numeracy are significantly increased.
