Abstract:Let $\Pi$ be a polar space of type $\textsf{D}_{n}$. Denote by ${\mathcal G}_{\delta}(\Pi)$, $\delta\in \{+,-\}$ the associated half-spin Grassmannians and write $\Gamma_{\delta}(\Pi)$ for the corresponding half-spin Grassmann graphs. In the case when $n\ge 4$ is even, the apartments of ${\mathcal G}_{\delta}(\Pi)$ will be characterized as the images of isometric embeddings of the half-cube graph $\frac{1}{2}H_n$ in $\Gamma_{\delta}(\Pi)$. As an application, we describe all isometric embeddings of $\Gamma_{\delta}(\Pi)$ in the half-spin Grassmann graphs associated to a polar space of type $\textsf{D}_{n'}$ under the assumption that $n\ge 6$ is even.

Holomorphic Curves in Moduli Spaces Are Quasi-Isometrically Immersed

Abstract:A holomorphic curve in moduli spaces is the image of a non-constant holomorphic map from a hyperbolic surface $B$ of type $(g,n)$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_h$ of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $h$. We show that, when all peripheral monodromies are of infinite order, the holomorphic map is a quasi-isometric immersion with parameters depending only on $g$, $n$, $h$ and the systole of $B$. When peripheral monodromies also satisfy an additional condition, we find a lift quasi-isometrically embedding a fundamental polygon of the hyperbolic surface $B$ into the Teichmüller space. We further improve the Parshin-Arakelov finiteness theorem, by proving that there are only finitely many monodromy homomorphisms induced by holomorphic curves of type $(g,n)$ in $\mathcal{M}_h$ where systole is bounded away from $0$, up to equivalence.

Abstract:We give an example of a parabolic holomorphic self-map f of the unit ball whose canonical Kobayashi hyperbolic semi-model is given by an elliptic automorphism of the disc , which can be chosen to be different from the identity. As a consequence, in contrast to the one dimensional case, this provides a first example of a holomorphic self-map of the unit ball which has points with zero hyperbolic step and points with nonzero hyperbolic step, solving an open question and showing that parabolic dynamics in the ball is radically different from parabolic dynamics in the disc. The example is obtained via a geometric method, embedding the ball as a domain in the bidisc that is forward invariant and absorbing for the map , where denotes the right half-plane. We also show that a complete Kobayashi hyperbolic domain with such properties cannot be Gromov hyperbolic w.r.t. the Kobayashi distance (hence, it cannot be biholomorphic to ) if an additional quantitative geometric condition is satisfied.

Abstract:Holomorphic representations are lowest weight representations for simple Lie groups of Hermitian type and have been studied extensively. Inspired by the work of Kobayashi on discrete series for indefinite Stiefel manifolds, Gross-Wallach on quaternonic discrete series and their analytic continuation, and Orsted-Wolf on Borel-de Siebenthal discrete series, we define and study Borel-de Siebenthal representations (also called quasi-holomorphic representations) associated with Borel-de Siebenthal root systems for simple Lie groups of non-Hermitian type.
Collinearity of points on Poincaré unit disk and Riemann sphere

Abstract:We study certain points significant for the hyperbolic geometry of the unit disk. We give explicit formulas for the intersection points of the Euclidean lines and the stereographic projections of great circles of the Riemann sphere passing through these points. We prove several results related to collinearity of these intersection points, offer new ways to find the hyperbolic midpoint, and represent a formula for the chordal midpoint. The proofs utilize Gröbner bases from computer algebra for the solution of polynomial equations.

Abstract:Let $\Sigma$ be a surface of negative Euler characteristic, homeomorphic to a closed surface, possibly with a finite number of points removed. In this paper, we present a construction method for a wide range of examples of geometric transition from hyperbolic to Anti-de Sitter structures via Half-pipe geometry on $\Sigma\times\mathbb{S}^1$, with cone singularities along a link. The main ingredient lies in studying the deformation of a convex core structure as the bending laminations of the upper and lower boundary components of the convex core uniformly collapse to zero.

Abstract:We present the isometry between the 2-dimensional Funk model and the Finsler-Poincaré disk. Then, we introduce the Finslerian Poincaré upper half plane model, which turns out to be also isometrically equivalent to the previous models. As application, we state the gapless character of the first eigenvalue for the aforementioned three spaces.

Abstract:Hyperbolic geometry plays an important role within function theory of the disk. For example, via the Schwarz-Pick Lemma, the isometries of the unit disk $\mathbb D$ with respect to this geometry are the conformal self-maps of $\mathbb D$. In this elementary classroom note, we are interested in the collection of the pseudohyperbolic disks $D_\rho(x,r)$ (with fixed radius $r$ and variable hyperbolic centers $-1<x<1$) and determine explicitely with function theoretic tools the enveloppe of these disks.

Abstract:We offer a new approach to the classical topological disk theorem of Reifenberg in the codimension-1 case. Our proof, using 1/2-level sets of the smoothing of the characteristic function of the domain Omega as approximating surfaces of partial derivative Omega, is much simpler than Reifenberg's original one (1960). We also extend the result to parabolic space.

Abstract:We establish a correspondence on a Riemann surface between hyperbolic metrics with isolated singularities and bounded projective functions whose Schwarzian derivatives have at most double poles and whose monodromies lie in ${\rm PSU}(1,\,1)$. As an application, we construct explicitly a new class of hyperbolic metrics with countably many singularities on the unit disc.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a method to verify David's integrability condition for certain Beltrami differentials without using Petersen puzzles. Using this method and trans-quasiconformal surgery, we prove that for any David type rotation number, the boundary of the Siegel disk of $f_{\theta}(z) = e^{2 \pi i \theta} \sin (z)$ is a Jordan curve which passes through exactly two critical points $\pi/2$ and $-\pi/2$.

Abstract:Motivated by the Poincare conjecture, we study properties of digital n-dimensional spheres and disks, which are digital models of their continuous counterparts. We introduce homeomorphic transformations of digital manifolds, which retain the connectedness, the dimension, the Euler characteristics and the homology groups of manifolds. We find conditions where an n-dimensional digital manifold is the n-dimensional digital sphere and discuss the link between continuous closed n-manifolds and their digital models.

Abstract:As is well-known, there exist nonconstant holomorphic maps from the plane into the Riemann sphere $\PP^1$ minus two points, the simplest example of which is an explicit realization of the uniformization map given by applying the exponential map and then composing with a Mobius transformation taking 0 and $\infty$ to the two given punctures. Likewise, we can map the plane into the sphere minus one point by simply applying directly a Mobius transformation taking $\infty$ to this puncture. In this paper we prove two parametrized versions of this uniformization result using different methods. We first present a slightly easier version using complex analysis, which allows us to construct the uniformizing maps more or less explicitly in terms of the initial coordinates given. Then we give the more general and coordinate invariant version, which we prove by extending Kodaira's theory of the Jacobian fibration to a family of singular curves constructed via algebraic geometry. Finally, using the results obtained with the Jacobian fibration, we obtain two equivalent conditions for an complex surface nonhyperbolically fibered over a complex curve to be holomorphically dominable by $\CC^2$. In theorem \ref{thm:surf} we show that this dominability is equivalent to the apparently weaker condition of the existence of a Zariski dense image of $\CC$ and equivalent to the quasiprojectivity of the base curve together with the nonnegativity of the orbifold Euler characteristic.

Abstract:We resolve a conjecture of Fässler and Orponen on the dimension of exceptional projections to one-dimensional subspaces indexed by a space curve in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We do this by obtaining sharp $L^p$ bounds for a variant of the Wolff circular maximal function over fractal sets for a class of $C^2$ curves related to Sogge's cinematic curvature condition. A key new tool is the use of lens cutting techniques from discrete geometry.

Abstract:We construct two-dimensional families of complex hyperbolic structures on disc orbibundles over the sphere with three cone points. This contrasts with the previously known examples of the same type, which are locally rigid. In particular, we obtain examples of complex hyperbolic structures on trivial and cotangent disc bundles over closed Riemann surfaces.
