Abstract:Three new ferrocene-peptide compounds were designed and prepared. We investigated their gelling abilities and found that two of them were capable of gelling various organic solvents, especially alcohols. Gels also formed in mixed alcohol-water solvents, which decreased the critical gelation concentration (CGC) of the gels. Compound 1, comprised of a dipeptide (Phe-Phe) and ferrocene, acted as a novel low-molecular-weight gelator in the formation of metallogel 1 in isopropanol-water (v/v = 1 : 1). This gelation was found to be reversible under redox stimuli; changing of the redox state of ferrocene induced a reversible gel-sol phase transition. Additionally, gel 1 responded to beta-CD as a result of host-guest interactions between this compound and ferrocene. With the addition of beta-CD, the gel network gradually broke down, as demonstrated by SEM.
Bifunctional Organogels Based on Pyridine-Hydrazide for Enrichment and Detection of Cu2+, Fe3+and F−

Abstract:Novel gelators based on isomeric pyridine-hydrazide derivatives, namely, G1, G2, and G3 were successfully synthesized and characterized, among which G2 significantly surpassed G1 and G3, indicating that the position of the pyridine nitrogen remarkably affected the resulting gelation properties. Most interestingly, G2 was utilized as a naked eye chemosensor for many analytes such as F, Cu2+, and Fe3+. Among the tested anions, only F showed a notable change from transparent gel to white emulsion. And the detection limit of G2 for F is 8.483 x 10 6 M. Among the tested metal ions, G2-DCM gel could enrich Cu2+ or Fe3+ in water resources by forming stable metallogels. Furthermore, the different color changed in the organogel-to-metallogel transformation process could be also observed. Hence, the G2-DCM gel could act as a multi-stimuli-responsive sensor for detecting F, Cu2+, and Fe3+, and a promising smart soft material for enriching Cu2+ or Fe3+ in water resources.

Abstract:The novel ferrocene-based compound 2-Fc is synthesized through the reaction of ferrocene carbonate acid and epoxy rosin E-51, and characterized by H-1 NMR. The CV behaviors of 2-Fc in different organic solvents are recorded, and the major influential factors, namely, potential scan rate, concentration of electrolyte, and concentration of 2-Fc, and the mechanism of the electrode process are investigated. The CV behaviors of 2-Fc film on electrode in LiClO4 aqueous and organic solutions and the application of 2-Fc in H2PO4- recognition are also studied.

Abstract:A new probe, based on BINOL and ferrocene unit, senses Al3+ selectively among a variety of metal cations. Through different channels: anodic redox shift of the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox couple, and a remarkable enhancement of the fluorescence. This fluorescence recognition of Al3+ also shows color changes under a UV lamp. Mass and NMR spectroscopic analyses have been used to study the mechanism, which indicates the formation of [1 + 2] complexes.

Abstract:Novel luminescent organogelators based on nucleosides functionalized with carbazole (UC8, UC12 and UC16) were designed and synthesized. Their gelation ability was tested and it was found that both UC12 and UC16 could form stable organogels in toluene/petroleum ether. The UV/Vis absorption, fluorescence emission, and IR spectral changes during the gelation of UC12 proved that the self‐assembly was driven by hydrogen‐bonding. The morphology of the xerogel UC16 obtained from toluene/petroleum ether (v/v 1:1) displayed tough rod‐like microstructures, and 3D networks formed from numerous nanofibers were observed for the xerogel UC16 obtained from toluene/petroleum ether (v/v 2:1). It was interesting that the obtained organogels emitting blue light could be destroyed by the addition of F–, accompanied by a reduction of the emission intensity. Therefore, these organogels could be used as sensory materials to recognize F–.

Abstract:Small molecule gels with different stimuli responsiveness are endowed with different characteristics. Due to the reversibility of non-covalent bond forces and the adjustability of the self-assembly process, small molecule gels are widely used as an intelligent soft material prospect. Here, we designed and synthesized a novel gelator, stigmasteryl glycinate ferrocenoylamide (SGF), which uses plant sterols as raw materials and has multi-stimulus response performance. The gelation behavior of SGF was investigated in different solvents. The properties and mechanism of self-assembly of gels were characterized by SEM, UV-VIS, FT-IR, CAT and XRD. The intermolecular hydrogen bond nature of the gel formation and the lamellar aggregation pattern of SGF gel are revealed. Interestingly, SGF/cyclohexane gel shows excellent responsiveness to a variety of external stimuli such as temperature, thixotropic force and redox. In particular, SGF has a specific recognition ability for methanol.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new paradigm for designing hydrogelators that exhibit sharp phase transitions in response to a series of disparate stimuli, including oxidation-reduction reactions (redox), guest host interactions, and pH changes. We have serendipitously discovered that ferrocenoyl phenylalanine (Fc-F) monomers aggregate in water via a rapid self-assembly mechanism to form stable, multistimuli hydrogels. In comparison to other known mono- and multiresponsive gelators, Fc-F is unique because of its small size, economy of gel-forming components, and exceptionally simple molecular structure. Density functional theory (DFT) ab initio calculations suggest gel formation initially involves an antiparallel, noncovalent dimerization step wherein the ferrocenoyl moiety of one axe-like monomer conjoins with the phenyl group of the second monomer via a pi-pi stacking interaction to form brick-like dimers. This stacking creates a cavity in which the carboxylic acid groups of each monomer mutually interact via hydrogen bond formation, which affords additional stability to the dimer. On the basis of structural analysis via optical and electrical measurements and additional DFT calculations, we propose a possible stepwise hierachical assembly mechanism for fibril formation. Insights into the self-assembly pathway of Fc-F should prove useful for understanding gelation processes of more complex systems. We expect that Fc-F will serve as a helpful archetypical template for others to use when designing new, stimuli specific hydrogelation agents.

Abstract:Two novel gelators G1 and G2 based on naphthalene and cholesterol derivatives were designed and synthesized, which could form stable organogel in different kind of solvents. Interestingly, G2 could act as an efficient fluorescent sensor for detection of Fe3+ and Cu2+, also the self-assembly mechanism and ion response mechanism were further studied. The detection limits of G2 for Fe3+ and Cu2+ are 8.2539 x 10-6 M and 9.1426 x 10-6 M, respectively. Besides, a rapid fluorescence detection film for Fe3+ and Cu2+ were also developed.

Abstract:A novel low-molecular-mass gelator containing a redox-active ferrocenyl group, cholesteryl glycinate ferrocenoylamide (CGF), was intentionally designed and prepared. It was demonstrated that the gelator gels 13 out of the 45 solvents tested. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements revealed that the gelator self-assembled into different supramolecular network structures in different gels. Chemical oxidation of the ferrocenyl residue resulted in phase transition of the gel from gel state to solution state. FTIR and (1)H NMR spectroscopy studies revealed that hydrogen bonding between the gelator molecules in the gel was one of the main driving forces for the formation of the gels.

Abstract:In the design of effective gelators with aggregation-induced emission behavior, amide and cholesterol moieties are generally used to provide multiple driving forces for gelation. In this work, a series of linear cyanostilbene gelators with a pyridine moiety and different lengths of the alkoxyl group, i.e., CSpy-Cn, have been synthesized through nucleophilic substitution and Knoevenagel reaction. The direct connection of pyridine extends the conjugation of the cyanostilbene moiety, while the alkoxyl group can regulate the solubility of the compounds so that the compounds can serve as gelators for common solvents such as acetonitrile, dimethyl sulfoxide, and ethanol at ultra-low concentrations. At the same time, the cyanostilbene group makes the compounds undergo photoisomerization and emit fluorescence under UV light, while the pyridine group can serve as an acid-base responsive group due to easy protonation. The gels can respond to temperature, light, and organic acid/base. The fluorescence intensity and color can reversibly change during the gel-sol transitions. Finally, a thin film based on the CSpy-C8 xerogel has been prepared and utilized as a multi-stimuli-responsive fluorescence display for information storage and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:In this work, through inclusion complexation between cyclodextrin (CD) host and ferrocene (Fc) guest, a monomer with double bond was incorporated to the surface of CdS quantum dot (QD). The obtained supra-structure could act as a supra-crosslink (Fc-SCL) in its copolymerizing with N,N -dimethylacrylamide (DMA) leading to a hybrid supramolecular hydrogel (Fc-Gel). Fc-SCL inherited satisfactory electrochemical activity from Fc. When the weight percentage of Fc-SCL in Fc-Gel was increased, an apparent increase of elastic modulus ( G ′) was observed. Furthermore, Fc-Gel also exhibited good fluorescent properties. It was also demonstrated that the inclusion complexation of CD and Fc played a crucial role in constructing the hydrogel; therefore, this Fc-Gel was an organic-inorganic hybrid hydrogel induced by supramolecular interaction.

Abstract:A series of chiral aryl amide compounds bearing peptide pendants have been investigated as low molecular weight gelators. A mechanistic study reveals that complementary hydrogen bonding from peptide pendants is the main driving force for the formation of organogels. This new class of organogels can exhibit multi-stimuli-responsive behavior upon applying (1) thermal, (2) pH, (3) enantiomeric purity, and (4) fluoride anion stimuli. Enantiomeric purity as a new external stimulus displays sensitive stimuli-responsiveness; only 0.02 equiv. of the enantiomer can completely disassemble the gel aggregate. They will serve as excellent smart materials with potential applications in chiral sensors, recognition, and separation.

Abstract:Based on Schiff base unit with/without a perfluoroalkyl group, novel multi-functional compounds 1 and 2 were proven to be able to form gels with different solvents. The difference in the molecular structure of compounds 1 and 2 was the presence of a perfluoroalkyl chain. The self-assembly pattern was studied by the employment of rheological analysis, UV–vis absorption, fluorescence spectrum, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectra, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The gelation behaviors showed a sensitive and selective "turn-off" fluorescence response with Cu 2+ . Due to the protonation or deprotonation of compounds 1 and 2 with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) or triethylamine (TEA), the xerogel films which were prepared from DMSO:H 2 O (9:1, v/v) at 5 wt% presented the emission quenching and recovery upon TFA and TEA vapors. In this sense, the work will open up a novel pathway to detect Cu 2+ , TFA, and TEA in the environment, using stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect.

Abstract:The reversible modulation of chirality has gained significant attention not only for fundamental stereochemical studies but also for numerous applications ranging from liquid crystals (LCs) to molecular motors and machines. This requires the construction of switchable molecules with (multiple) chiral elements in a highly enantioselective manner, which is often a significant synthetic challenge. Here, we show that the dimerization of an easily accessible enantiopure planar chiral ferrocene-indanone building block affords a multi-stimuli-responsive dimer (FcD) with pre-determined double bond geometry, helical chirality, and relative orientation of the two ferrocene motifs in high yield. This intrinsically planar chiral switch can not only undergo thermal or photochemical E/Z isomerization but can also be reversibly and quantitatively oxidized to both a monocationic and a dicationic state which is associated with significant changes in its (chir)optical properties. Specifically, FcD acts as a chiral dopant for cholesteric LCs with a helical twisting power (HTP) of 13 μm−1 which, upon oxidation, drops to near zero, resulting in an unprecedently large redox-tuning of the LC reflection color by up to 84 nm. Due to the straightforward stereoselective synthesis, FcD, and related chiral switches, are envisioned to be powerful building blocks for multi-stimuli-responsive molecular machines and in LC-based materials.

Synthesis, Characterization and Electrochemical Recognition of Metal Ions of Three New Ferrocenyl Derivatives Containing Pyridyl Moiety

Abstract:Three new ferrocene (Fc) based receptors with pyridyl moiety, named methyl-6-ferrocenoylacetyl-2-pyridine carboxylate (FcL1), 1,1′-(2,6-bispyridyl)bis-3-ferrocenyl-1,3-propanedione (FcL2), ferrocenecarboxaldehyde-2,6-dipicolinoyhydrazone (FcL3) were synthesized, and further characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, UV-Vis spectra, 1H and 13C NMR. The electrochemical properties and ion sensing properties of FcL1, FcL2 and FcL3 were also investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry in ethanol solution with 0.1 mol/L LiClO4 as the supporting electrolyte. The E 0 values of the receptors increase with the scanning rate increasing at high scanning rate, and I pa/I pc approaches unity, indicating that the redox reaction is basically reversible. Their recognition performances to different metal cations such as Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Hg(II), Mn(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) show that the FcL1 is responsive to Cu(II) with the maximum electrochemical shift of the FcL1 for Cu(II) of about 72.0 mV, whereas the FcL2 is responsive to Cu(II) and Mn(II) with shift of 102 mV and 109 mV, respectively, and the FcL3 is responsive to Hg(II) and Mn(II) with the shift of 53.0 mV and 54.0 mV, respectively. All the results show that these receptors may have potential applications in electrochemical sensor technology, material science, and molecular devices.

Abstract:In the field of electrochemical detection, ferrocene has a promising application prospect in view of its impact as a component of molecular receptors and sensing materials. In this review, we aim to describe the principle of ferrocene-based electrochemical detection and further discuss its design and performances. In particular, two forms of detection, molecular recognition and sensing systems, were specified. Ferrocene-based molecular receptors with all kinds of structures covering derivatives, polymers, and supramolecular receptors are presented. Benefits of their structures to the recognition behavior are compared and discussed. In electrochemical sensors, the ferrocene-containing component is used as a mediator or a label. Abstract:A simple and novel supramolecular hydrogel was prepared from ferrocene (Fc) modified amino acid phenylalanine (F) and utilized as electrochemical immunosensing platform for the detection of human IgG. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization indicated that the hydrogel is composed of fibrils with diameter around 50–100nm and length extend to 1mm. When the prepared hydrogel was reacted with H2O2, the Fc moieties on the amino acid was oxidized, leading to the disruption of the hydrogel structure and the decrease of its redox signal, which was characterized in detail by SEM and the electrochemical method. Regarding the redox current decrease upon the reaction of the hydrogel with H2O2, the hydrogel modified electrode was utilized as immunosensing interface. After the construction of the immunosensor based on the traditional sandwich protocol with glucose oxidase (GOx) functionalized carbon nanotube (CNT) as detection antibody label, the GOx attached onto electrode surface would catalyze glucose reaction to produce H2O2 and cause the decrease of redox current of the electrode. The current change is proportional to the concentration of IgG detected in the range from 0.1 to 100pg/mL. The high sensitivity, wide linear range and good reproducibility of the immunosensor indicate this immunosensing platform can be easily extended to the detection of other protein biomarkers.

Abstract:A photochromic metal-organic gel with thermo-, photo-, and anion-responsive behavior is obtained. Unusually, heating of the Al-ligand solution leads to gel formation and cooling to room temperature reverses the process to reform the solution. The gel is sensitive to weakly coordinating anions. Additionally, reversible photochromic transformations take place both in the solution and gel states, accompanied by reversibly switched luminescence.
