Abstract:57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy on single crystal slices has been used to study the spin reorientation transition that occurs in HoFeO3 for $35~\text {K} \leq T \leq 60$ K. We also prepared a powder sample for comparison and confirmed that the results were consistent between the two data sets. By using thin polished slices cut perpendicular to the three orthorhombic axes we have been able to follow $a$ - $\text {axis}\rightarrow c$ -axis reorientation in detail and confirm that moments also tip toward the $b$ −axis by ~ 20° before returning closer to the $ac$ −plane. We also show that the moments are never fully parallel or perpendicular to any of the three orthorhombic axes; a consequence of the mixed ferro-/antiferro-magnetic structure adopted by HoFeO3.

Abstract:Both continuous and discontinuous spin reorientation transitions in the HoFeO₃ orthoferrite have been further investigated in this paper. Here, we use terahertz spectroscopy through the terahertz ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic resonances to study the thermodynamics of the spin reorientation transitions in HoFeO₃ ceramics. The spin reorientations are driven by changes in the anisotropy energy, and the spin moments in and out of the (a, c) plane correspond to the continuous transitions and discontinuous transitions. We fitted the antiferromagnetic resonant frequencies, and we achieved quantitative insight on the changes in anisotropy energy. Measuring M-H (moment-magnetic field) curves, we found changes in macroscopic magnetization and verified the thermodynamics.

Abstract:We report on transient reflectivity and magneto-optical Kerr measurements from the colossal magnetoresistance compounds La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO), La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO), and Sr2FeMoO6 (SFMO) as a function of temperature and magnetic field. In LCMO and LSMO, an unusually slow (similar to 1 mu s) carrier relaxation component is revealed in the transient reflectivity traces. The component disappears as the transition temperature is approached from below. This slow decay process is attributed to spin-lattice relaxation of carriers in localized states and shows a close relationship with the spectral weight near the Fermi surface. The attribution is further supported by our pump-probe magneto-optical Kerr measurements. In addition to the clear observation of magnetic precessions, a long-lived exponentially decaying background reflects the spin-related relaxation of photoexcited electrons. In contrast to manganites, the temperature dependence of transient reflectivity is negligible, although there is a significant change in transient Kerr rotation in SFMO. Our results show that the dynamics of charge, spin, and lattice are strongly correlated with each other in the manganites, but the spin degree of freedom is thermally insulated from the electron and lattice systems.
Tuning the Weak Ferromagnetic States in Dysprosium Orthoferrite.

Abstract:RFeO3 orthoferrites, where R is a rare-earth ion of the lanthanide series, are attracting attention mostly because of their promising fast spin dynamics. The magnetic properties of these materials seem to crucially depend on whether the magnetizations of the R and Fe ions' weak ferromagnetic (WFM) components are parallel or antiparallel to each other. Here, we report an extensive investigation of a high-quality DyFeO3 single crystal in which the induced Dy3+ magnetization (FDy) has a natural tendency to be antiparallel to Fe3+ sublattice magnetization (FFe) within a large temperature window. Moreover, we find that specific variations of temperature and applied magnetic fields allow us to make FDy parallel to FFe, or force a spin-flip transition in FFe, among other effects. We found three different magnetic states that respond to temperature and magnetic fields, i.e. linear versus constant or, alternatively, presenting either behavior depending on the history of the sample. An original magnetic field-versus-temperature phase diagram is constructed to indicate the region of stability of the different magnetic phases, and to reveal the precise conditions yielding sudden spin switching and reversals. Knowledge of such a phase diagram is of potential importance to applications in spintronics and magnetic devices.
Twofold Spin Reorientation and Field-Induced Incomplete Phase Transition in Single-Crystal Dy0.5pr0.5feo3

Abstract:We report an intriguing twofold spin reorientation transition of type Gamma(4)(G(x), A(y), F-z) -> Gamma(1)(A(x), G(y), C-z) -> Gamma(2)(F-x, C-y, G(z)) for the Fe3+ magnetic sublattice near spin reorientation temperatures T-SR1 similar to 77 K and T-SR2 similar to 45 K in a rare-earth orthoferrite Dy0.5Pr0.5FeO3 single crystal. Magnetic-field-induced incomplete spin-configuration transitions (Gamma(4) -> Gamma(41) -> Gamma(42) for H = 20 kOe and Gamma(4) -> Gamma(42) for H = 40 kOe) were observed by measurement of magnetization as a function of temperature. The spin reorientation temperature of a Dy0.5Pr0.5FeO3 single crystal can be controlled by changing the magnitude of the applied magnetic field. We also show that spin reorientation of the Gamma(1) -> Gamma(4) type between T-SR2 and T-SR1 can be induced by an applied magnetic field along the c axis. The origin of the intriguing magnetic behavior is ascribed to the anisotropic effective field whose strength is determined by the interactions with R3+(R = Dy, Pr) spins and can be modified by the external applied magnetic field. It provides deeper insight into the Fe3+-R3+ magnetic interaction which dominates the sophisticated magnetic phase transitions in the rare-earth orthoferrites.

Abstract:Spin reorientation is a magnetic phase transition in which rotation of the magnetization vector with respect to the crystallographic axes occurs upon a change in the temperature or magnetic field. For example, SmFeO3shows a magnetization rotation from thecaxis above 480 K to theaaxis below 450 K, known as the Γ4→ Γ2transition. This work reports the successful synthesis of the new single-crystal perovskite SmFe0.75Mn0.25O3and finds interesting spin reorientations above and below room temperature. In addition to the spin reorientation of the Γ4→ Γ2magnetic phase transition observed at aroundTSR2= 382 K, a new spin reorientation, Γ2→ Γ1, was seen at aroundTSR1= 212 K due to Mn doping, which could not be observed in the parent rare earth perovskite compound. This unexpected spin configuration has complete antiferromagnetic order without any canting-induced weak ferromagnetic moment, resulting in zero magnetization in the low-temperature regime.M–TandM–Hmeasurements have been made to study the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the observed spin reorientation transitions.

Abstract:We report a spin reorientation from Γ4(Gx, Ay, Fz) to Γ1(Ax, Gy, Cz) magnetic configuration near room temperature and a re-entrant transition from Γ1(Ax, Gy, Cz) to Γ4(Gx, Ay, Fz) at low temperature in TbFe1-xMnxO3 single crystals by performing both magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements. The Γ4 - Γ1 spin reorientation temperature can be enhanced to room temperature when x is around 0.5 ~ 0.6. These new transitions are distinct from the well-known Γ4 - Γ2 transition observed in TbFeO3, and the sinusoidal antiferromagnetism to complex spiral magnetism transition observed in multiferroic TbMnO3. We further study the evolution of magnetic entropy change (-ΔSM) versus Mn concentration to reveal the mechanism of the re-entrant spin reorientation behavior and the complex magnetic phase at low temperature. The variation of -ΔSM between a and c axes indicates the significant change of magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy in the TbFe1-xMnxO3 system. Furthermore, as Jahn-Teller inactive Fe(3+) ions coexist with Jahn-Teller active Mn(3+) ions, various anisotropy interactions, compete with each other, giving rise to a rich magnetic phase diagram. The large magnetocaloric effect reveals that the studied material could be a potential magnetic refrigerant. These findings expand our knowledge of spin reorientation phenomena and offer the alternative realization of spin-switching devices at room temperature in the rare-earth orthoferrites.
Natural ferroelectric order near ambient temperature in HoFeO3: A member of RFeO3 orthoferrites

Abstract:Current scenario in multiferroics demands a breakthrough discovery of promising materials after BiFeO3. Recently, the controversial discovery of room temperature ferroelectricity (FE) in SmFeO3 [PRL 107, 117201 (2011); 113, 217203 (2014)] inspires the investigation of HoFeO3. Here, we report a natural ferroelectric order below 210 K (TFE) along c-axis with reasonably large polarization and low-field strong magnetoelectric coupling. Synchrotron and neutron diffraction results confirm that a shift of O atoms along c-axis of polar Pbn21 structure causes FE in HoFeO3. The exchange striction mechanism is suggested to elucidate the ferroelectric order. The results create a renewed attention for searching promising candidates with a natural ferroelectric order and higher TFE in the rest of the RFeO3 series.

Abstract:Magnetic rare-earth orthoferrites $R$FeO$_3$ host a variety of functional properties from multiferroicity and strong magnetostriction, to spin-reorientation transitions and ultrafast light-driven manipulation of magnetism, which can be exploited in spintronics and next-generation devices. Among these systems, SmFeO$_3$ is attracting a particular interest for its rich phase diagram and the high temperature Fe-spin magnetic transitions, which combines with a very low temperature and as yet unclear Sm-spin ordering. Various experiments suggest that the interaction between the Sm and Fe magnetic moments (further supported by the magnetic anisotropy), is at the origin of the complex cascade of transitions, but a conclusive and clear picture has not yet been reached. In this work, by means of comprehensive first-principles calculations, we unravel the role of the magnetic Sm ions in the Fe-spin reorientation transition and in the detected anomalies in the lattice vibrational spectrum, which are a signature of a relevant spin-phonon coupling. By including both Sm-$f$ electrons and non-collinear magnetism, we find frustrated and anisotropic Sm interactions, and a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy mediated by the SOC of the Sm-$4f$ electrons, which drive the complex magnetic properties and phase diagram of SmFeO$_3$.

Abstract:The prospect of controlling the magnetization ( M ) of a material is of great importance from the viewpoints of fundamental physics and future applications of emerging spintronics. A class of rare-earth orthoferrites RFeO 3 (R is rare-earth element) materials exhibit striking physical properties of spin switching and magnetization reversal induced by temperature and/or applied magnetic field. Furthermore, due to the novel magnetic, magneto-optic and multiferroic properties etc., RFeO 3 materials are attracting more and more interests in recent years. We have prepared and investigated a prototype of RFeO 3 materials, namely SmFeO 3 single-crystal. And we report magnetic measurements upon both field cooling (FC) and zero-field cooling (ZFC) of the sample, as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. The central findings of this study include that the magnetization of single-crystal SmFeO 3 can be switched by temperature and tuning the magnitude of applied magnetic field allows us to realize such spin switching even at room temperature.

Abstract:Rare-earth orthoferrites are very interesting due to their appealing optical and multiferroic properties. In this study, the magnetic structures and transitions of a typical rare-earth orthoferrite, ErFeO3, have been reinvestigated in detail. The spin-reorientation transition of the Fe3+ magnetic phase and the low-temperature magnetic ordering of Er3+ were observed by neutron powder diffraction. The corresponding magnetic structures have been solved anew by symmetry analysis and refinement of the diffraction results. The magnetic moments of Fe3+ align in an antiferromagnetic way along the c axis with a weak ferromagnetic component along the b axis below the Neel temperature and above the spin-reorientation transition. Below the spin-reorientation transition, the Fe3+ moments rotate into an antiferromagnetic ordering state along the b axis with weak ferromagnetic alignment along the c axis. The spin-reorientation takes place in the bc plane. The Er3+ moments align antiferromagnetically with a Cy mode below 4.5 K. For the Fe3+ moments, an additional C-x mode is induced by the ordering of the Er3+ moments. Namely, they change from G(y)F(z) mode into C(x)G(y)F(z) mode in the Pnma space-group setting. This study resolves the long-lasting dispute about the magnetic structure of ErFeO3 at low temperature. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:A series of RFe11Mo compounds (R=Y, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er) with the ThMn12-type structure have been synthesized. The structural and magnetic properties of the compounds have been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. The lattice parameters a, c and the unit-cell volume V of the compounds decrease with decreasing the atomic radius of the rare earth element due to the lanthanide contraction. The spin-reorientation transition (SRT) was investigated in detail. For HoFe11Mo, no SRT was observed. For NdFe11Mo, TbFe11Mo and ErFe11Mo one SRT was observed, while for DyFe11Mo two SRTs were observed. By minimizing the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, theoretical SR temperatures of the compounds are derived, which show a reasonable agreement with the experimental values.

Magnetic phase transition and continuous spin switching in a high-entropy orthoferrite single crystal

Abstract:Rare-earth orthoferrite RE FeO 3 (where RE is a rare-earth ion) is gaining interest. We created a high-entropy orthoferrite (Tm 0.2 Nd 0.2 Dy 0.2 Y 0.2 Yb 0.2 ) FeO 3 (HEOR) by doping five RE ions in equimolar ratios and grew the single crystal by optical floating zone method. It strongly tends to form a single-phase structure stabilized by high configurational entropy. In the low-temperature region (11.6–14.4 K), the spin reorientation transition (SRT) of Γ 2 ( F x , C y , G z )–Γ 24 –Γ 4 ( G x , A y , F z ) occurs. The weak ferromagnetic (FM) moment, which comes from the Fe sublattices distortion, rotates from the a - to c -axis. The two-step dynamic processes (Γ 2 –Γ 24 –r 4 ) are identified by AC susceptibility measurements. SRT in HEOR can be tuned in the range of 50–60000 Oe, which is an order of magnitude larger than that of orthoferrites in the peer system, making it a candidate for high-field spin sensing. Typical spin-switching (SSW) and continuous spin-switching (CSSW) effects occur under low magnetic fields due to the strong interactions between RE –Fe sublattices. The CSSW effect is tunable between 20–50 Oe, and hence, HEOR potentially can be applied to spin modulation devices. Furthermore, because of the strong anisotropy of magnetic entropy change (−Δ S m ) and refrigeration capacity (RC) based on its high configurational entropy, HEOR is expected to provide a novel approach for refrigeration by altering the orientations of the crystallographic axes (anisotropic configurational entropy).

Abstract:The present work reports the preparation of polycrystalline multiferroic $GdFeO_3$ (GdFO) and characterization with x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetization, temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy, temperature and magnetic field dependent $^{57}Fe$ M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy measurements. The sample is found to be phase pure from Rietveld refinement of XRD pattern. The M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra measured in the presence of external magnetic field show the signatures of field induced spin reorientation transition, which are corroborated by magnetization measurements. From the temperature dependent variation of internal hyperfine field, N$\grave{e}$el transition temperature ($T_{N,Fe}$) of 672.5$\pm$0.2 K and critical exponent ($\beta$) of 0.333$\pm$0.003 is obtained. Temperature dependent (300 - 760 K) Raman spectroscopy measurements show the signatures of spin-phonon coupling and local structural re-arrangement across $T_{N,Fe}$.

Abstract:The single crystals of rare-earth titanate pyrochlore compound Ho2Ti2O7 are grown and their multiferroicity along the [110] and [111] directions is investigated. The ferroelectricity below ∼28 K, with a polarization of ∼2.50 μC/m2 along the ⟨111⟩ direction at 2 K, qualitatively fitting with the theoretical scenario proposed by Khomskii (Nat. Commun. 3, 904 (2012)), is revealed. The magnetoelectric responses along both the [110] and [111] directions are observed, but different underlying mechanisms associated with the specific spin configurations are suggested.

Abstract:Hexagonal ferrites (h-RFeO$_3$, R=Y, Dy-Lu) have recently been identified as a new family of multiferroic complex oxides. The coexisting spontaneous electric and magnetic polarizations make h-RFeO$_3$ rare-case ferroelectric ferromagnets at low temperature. Plus the room-temperature multiferroicity and predicted magnetoelectric effect, h-RFeO$_3$ are promising materials for multiferroic applications. Here we review the structural, ferroelectric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric properties of h-RFeO$_3$. The thin film growth is also discussed because it is critical in making high quality single crystalline materials for studying intrinsic properties.

Detailed magnetic studies demonstrate that the crystal is antiferromagnetic with weak canted ferromagnetism and experiences three sequential magnetic transitions around T-N1 similar to 127.3K, T-N2 similar to 115.2 K, and T-SR similar to 99.0 K. Interestingly, a temperature induced spin reorientation (SR) near TSR and magnetic field induced SR below TSR were observed. The H-T phase diagram was revealed to be quite different from both parent compounds YFeO3 and YCrO3. A dielectric relaxation around T-N1 was found to be associated with electron hopping. An intrinsic magnetoelectric effect was also observed at low temperatures. These results are helpful for understanding the exotic magnetic and magnetoelectric properties in the orthochromite and orthoferrite related systems. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:HoFe1-xMnxO3 (0 < x < 1) single crystals have been grown by the optical floating zone technique. A structural transition from the orthorhombic to hexagonal modification has been established in the crystals in the concentration range of 0.7-0.8, which has been confirmed by the X-ray diffraction data. For a series of the rhombic crystals, the room-temperature Mossbauer study and magnetic measurements in the temperature range of 4.2-1000 K have been carried out. It has been observed that, with an increase in the manganese content in the samples, the temperature of the spin-reorientation transition increases significantly: from 60 K in the HoFeO3 compound to room temperature in HoFe0.6Mn0.4O3. The magnetic measurements have shown that, upon substitution of manganese for iron, the magnetic orientational type transition changes from a second-order transition (AxFyGz -> CxGyFz) to first-order one (AxFyGz -> GxCyAz) with a weak ferromagnetic moment only in the b direction (for Pnma notation). The growth of the spin-reorientation transition temperature has been attributed to the change in the value of the indirect exchange in the iron subsystem under the action of manganese, which has been found when studying the Mossbauer effect in the HoFe1-xMnxO3 (x < 0.4) compound.

Abstract:We report the control of spin reorientation (SR) transition in perovskite Dy1-xSmxFeO3, a whole family of single crystals grown by an optical floating zone method from x = 0 to 1 with an interval of 0.1. Powder x-ray diffractions and Rietveld refinements indicate that lattice parameters a and c increase linearly with Sm doping concentration, whereas b keeps a constant. Temperature dependence of the magnetizations under zero-field-cooling (ZFC) and field-cooling (FC) processes are studied in detail. We have found a remarkable linear change of SR transition temperature in Sm-rich samples for x > 0.2, which covers an extremely wide temperature range including room temperature. The a-axis magnetization curves under the FC during cooling (FCC) process bifurcate from and then jump back to that of the ZFC and FC warming process in single crystals when x = 0.5-0.9, suggesting complicated 4f - 3d electron interactions among Dy3+-Sm3+, Dy3+-Fe3+, and Sm3+-Fe3+ sublattices of diverse magnetic configurations. The magnetic properties from the doping effect on SR transition temperature in these single crystals might be useful in the material physics and device design applications.
