Abstract:HoFe1-xMnxO3 (0 < x < 1) single crystals have been grown by the optical floating zone technique. A structural transition from the orthorhombic to hexagonal modification has been established in the crystals in the concentration range of 0.7-0.8, which has been confirmed by the X-ray diffraction data. For a series of the rhombic crystals, the room-temperature Mossbauer study and magnetic measurements in the temperature range of 4.2-1000 K have been carried out. It has been observed that, with an increase in the manganese content in the samples, the temperature of the spin-reorientation transition increases significantly: from 60 K in the HoFeO3 compound to room temperature in HoFe0.6Mn0.4O3. The magnetic measurements have shown that, upon substitution of manganese for iron, the magnetic orientational type transition changes from a second-order transition (AxFyGz -> CxGyFz) to first-order one (AxFyGz -> GxCyAz) with a weak ferromagnetic moment only in the b direction (for Pnma notation). The growth of the spin-reorientation transition temperature has been attributed to the change in the value of the indirect exchange in the iron subsystem under the action of manganese, which has been found when studying the Mossbauer effect in the HoFe1-xMnxO3 (x < 0.4) compound.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is controlling the spin reorientation transition temperature (TSR) in orthoferrite single crystals through isovalent substitution (i.e., partially replacing iron with manganese in HoFe_1-xMn_xO_3). Specifically, the study aims to explore the effects of different manganese contents on the structure and magnetic properties of HoFe_1-xMn_xO_3 single crystals and determine how to adjust the TSR temperature by varying the manganese content. ### Background Orthoferrites (RFeO_3) are a class of materials with complex magnetic properties, where R represents a rare earth element. The magnetic properties of these materials are determined by the interactions between 3d and 4f electrons. In particular, the HoFeO_3 compound undergoes a spin reorientation transition (TSR) at low temperatures, typically around 50-60 K. By partially replacing iron with manganese, the TSR temperature can be significantly increased, even reaching room temperature. ### Research Objectives 1. **Grow Single Crystals**: Grow HoFe_1-xMn_xO_3 single crystals using the optical floating zone method, with manganese content ranging from 0 to 0.8. 2. **Structural Characterization**: Confirm the quality and lattice parameters of the single crystals using X-ray diffraction and Laue methods. 3. **Magnetic Measurements**: Study the effects of different manganese contents on the magnetic properties, particularly the changes in TSR temperature, through Mössbauer spectroscopy and susceptibility measurements. ### Main Findings 1. **Structural Changes**: With increasing manganese content, the lattice parameter a increases linearly, b decreases linearly, and c decreases slightly, but the overall unit cell volume remains unchanged. When x > 0.7, the crystal structure transitions from orthorhombic to hexagonal. 2. **Magnetic Changes**: With increasing manganese content, the TSR temperature significantly increases, from about 58 K for pure HoFeO_3 to 294 K at x = 0.4. Additionally, the Néel temperature (TN) monotonically decreases with increasing manganese content, from 672 K to 125 K. 3. **Spin Reorientation Transition Properties**: In pure HoFeO_3, TSR is a second-order phase transition, while in partially substituted samples, TSR becomes a first-order phase transition, and a compensated antiferromagnetic phase is observed below the TSR temperature. ### Conclusion By partially replacing iron with manganese, the spin reorientation transition temperature in HoFe_1-xMn_xO_3 single crystals can be effectively controlled. This finding not only helps to understand the magnetic mechanisms of orthoferrite materials but also provides the possibility of developing new materials with specific magnetic properties.
