Abstract:Integration of a third component into a single-junction polymer solar cell (PSC) is regarded as an attractive strategy to enhance the performance of PSCs. Although binary all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) have recently emerged with compelling power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), the PCEs of ternary all-PSCs still lag behind those of the state-of-the-art binary all-PSCs, and the advantages of ternary systems are not fully exploited. In this work, we realize high-performance ternary all-PSCs with record-breaking PCEs of 9% and high fill factors (FF) of over 0.7 for both conventional and inverted devices. The improved photovoltaic performance benefits from the synergistic effects of extended absorption, more efficient charge generation, optimal polymer orientations and suppressed recombination losses compared to the binary all-PSCs, as evidenced by a set of experimental techniques. The results provide new insights for developing high-performance ternary all-PSCs by choosing appropriate donor and acceptor polymers to overcome limitations in absorption, by affording good miscibility, and by benefiting from charge and energy transfer mechanisms for efficient charge generation.

Abstract:Ternary blending and copolymerization strategies have proven advantageous in boosting the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells. Here, 15% efficiency solar cells using copolymerization donors are demonstrated, where the electron-withdrawing unit, ester-substituted thiophene, is incorporated into a PBDB-TF polymer to downshift the molecular energy and broaden the absorption. Copolymer-based solar cells suitable for large-area devices can be fabricated by a blade-coating method from a nonhalogen and nonaromatic solvent mixture. Although ternary solar cells can achieve comparable efficiencies, they are not suitable for environment-friendly processing conditions and show relatively low photostability compared to copolymer-based devices. These results not only demonstrate high-efficiency organic photovoltaic cells via copolymerization strategies but also provide important insights into their applications in practical production.

Abstract:Ternary copolymerization is a cost-effective and time-saving approach to improve device performance and batch stability of polymer donors. However, the structure of the ternary polymer donor obtained by the traditional one-pot polymerization is vague due to the different monomer reaction order, which has a great influence on the absorption, crystallization, molecular stacking, and device performance. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain terpolymers with definite structures, and systematically study the differences in device properties of polymers with different sequence structures. Herein, three terpolymers D1, D2, and D3 are developed. Random copolymer D3 is obtained via the traditional one-pot method while alternating copolymer donor D1 and block copolymer D2 are synthesized by stepwise polymerization. Because the block copolymer D2 possess periodic sequence distribution and retains the excellent properties of the two polymer matrix very well, the D2-based device shows enhanced tightened pi-face-on molecular stacking, distinguished efficient exciton dissociation, and decreased energy loss. As a result, the D2:L8-BO-based polymer solar cells achieve one of a record power conversion efficiency of 19.03%. The work demonstrates changing the sequence structure of the polymers to synthesize well-defined structures polymer donors not only maintains the features of polymer matrix, but also combines the advantages of ternary copolymerization. Breaking the traditional one-pot polymerization method, three terpolymers with different sequence structures are developed, namely alternate copolymer (D1), block copolymer (D2), and random copolymer (D3). The D2-based device shows more efficient exciton dissociation, smaller energy loss, and better molecular stacking orientation than D1 and D3-based, resulting in D2:L8-BO-based device obtaining one of a record PCE of 19.03%. image

Abstract:In this work, a random terpolymer methodology combining two electron-rich units, asymmetric thienobenzodithiophene (TBD) and thieno[2,3-f]benzofuran segments, is systematically investigated. The synergetic effect is embodied on the molecular packing and nanophase when copolymerized with 1,3-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione, producing an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.2% in IT-4F-based NF-PSCs, which outperformed the corresponding D-A copolymers. The balanced aggregation and better interpenetrating network of the TBD50:IT-4F blend film can lead to mixing region exciton splitting and suppress carrier recombination, along with high yields of long-lived carriers. Moreover, the broad applicability of terpolymer methodology is successfully validated in most electron-deficient systems. Especially, the TBD50/Y6-based device exhibits a high PCE of 15.0% with a small energy loss (0.52 eV) enabled by the low nonradiative energy loss (0.22 eV), which are among the best values reported for polymers without using benzodithiophene unit to date. These results demonstrate an outstanding terpolymer approach with backbone engineering to raise the hope of achieving even higher PCEs and to enrich organic photovoltaic materials reservoir.

Abstract:Two medium-bandgap polymers composed of benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiohpene and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole with 6-octyl-thieno[3,2-b]thiophene as a π-bridge unit are synthesized and their photovoltaic properties are analyzed. The two polymers have deep highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels, high crystallinity, optimal bulk-heterojunction morphology, and efficient charge transport, resulting in a power conversion efficiency of as high as 9.44% for a single-junction polymer solar-cell device.

Abstract:Limited by the relatively low short-circuit current density ( J sc ) and fill factor (FF), the efficiency of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) is still inferior to the small molecular acceptor (SMA) counterpart-based devices. Herein, we fabricate efficient ternary all-PSCs by introducing a fluorinated small molecular acceptor-derived polymer acceptor named PYF-T- o to broaden the absorption of the all-polymer blend and improve the molecular crystallinity. PYF-T- o was found to have a good compatibility with the host PY-DT acceptor, thus contributing to form a homogeneous mixed phase in the active layer. Consequently, the ternary all-PSC exhibits simultaneously improved J sc and FF than those of the binary all-PSC, resulting in an impressive efficiency of 18.15% (certified as 17.73%). Moreover, the large-area (1 cm 2 ) and eco-friendly ternary all-PSCs (processed with o -xylene) were fabricated, and high efficiencies of 16.43% and 17.67% were obtained, respectively, showing the great potential of all-PSCs for future organic photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:In this work, 2D/1A ternary blend films were designed based on two polymer donors of PTB7-Th and PBDB-T with comparable HOMO levels in combination with a nonfullerene O-IDTBR acceptor, which could display a high open-circuit voltage (V-oc) of 1.02 V. With an optimized blend of PTB7-Th: PBDB-T: O-IDTBR = 0.7:0.3:1.5, the ternary polymer solar cells (PSCs) showed PCEs of 11.58%, much higher than 9.74% and 6.99% for PTB7-Th: O-IDTBR and PBDB-T: O-IDTBR binary blend film, respectively. The improved efficiency for the ternary PSCs is due to the obviously elevated short-circuit current density. Higher charge dissociation probabilities, enhanced hole and electron transports, and favorable morphology were found for the ternary blend film. After long thermal annealing at 85 degrees C for 168 h, a good PCE of 9.37% was still retained by the ternary PSCs, remarkably higher than 5.33-6.27% for the two binary PSCs. In addition, the ternary PSCs with large areas of 0.37, 0.57, and 0.91 cm(2) were also evaluated, which displayed PCEs of 10.12%, 9.51%, and 9.01%, respectively. Our results demonstrated a high Voc strategy for ternary PSCs, in which the efficiency and thermal stability could be optimized.

Abstract:Ternary strategy is one of the most effective methods for improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). The selection of the third component is very important for improving device performance. In this study, we demonstrated a simple and effective copolymer, PBDTDTzT, which is based on a benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene donor unit and 2,5-di(thiazol-2-yl)thiophene acceptor unit, as the third component in the PM6:Y6 system. An optimal ternary device based on PM6:PBDTDTzT:Y6 (w/w = 1:0.1:1.1) achieved an impressive PCE of 17.0%. Detailed studies revealed that the loading of PBDTDTzT into the PM6:Y6 blend can not only optimize the ladder-type arrangement of energy levels but can also further optimize the morphology of the blend film, leading to balanced charge transport and reduced charge recombination simultaneously. Enhanced device performance is a result of the strong crystallization of PBDTDTzT and good compatibility between PBDTDTzT and PM6:Y6 blends. The results indicate that PBDTDTzT is a promising third component of high-efficiency ternary OSCs.

Abstract:With the rapid development of small-molecule electron acceptors, polymer electron donors are becoming more important than ever in organic photovoltaics, and there is still room for the currently available high-performance polymer donors. To further develop polymer donors with finely tunable structures to achieve better photovoltaic performances, random ternary copolymerization is a useful technique. Herein, by incorporating a new electron-withdrawing segment 2,3-bis(3-octyloxyphenyl)dithieno[3,2-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline derivative (C12T-TQ) to PM6, a series of terpolymers were synthesized. It is worth noting that the introduction of the C12T-TQ unit can deepen the highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels of the resultant polymers. In addition, the polymer Z6 with a 10% C12T-TQ ratio possesses the highest film absorption coefficient (9.86 × 104 cm-1) among the four polymers. When blended with Y6, it exhibited superior miscibility and mutual crystallinity enhancement between Z6 and Y6, suppressed recombination, better exciton separation and charge collection characteristics, and faster hole transfer in the D-A interface. Consequently, the device of Z6:Y6 successfully achieved enhanced photovoltaic parameters and yielded an efficiency of 17.01%, higher than the 16.18% of the PM6:Y6 device, demonstrating the effectiveness of the meta-octyloxy-phenyl-modified dithieno[3,2-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline moiety to build promising terpolymer donors for high-performance organic solar cells.

Abstract:Here, we combine two donor polymers with a relatively short synthesis method and fabricate ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) with a high efficiency and a decent figure-of-merit. A series of characterizations show that the optimal morphology of the ternary blend is the result of the coupling and competition of PTQ10 and PTVT‑T, where the molecular packing and phase separation motif of PTQ10 is broken but the strong aggregation of PTVT‑T is suppressed, resulting in efficient charge transport and collection, as well as suppressed bimolecular recombination. Moreover, a previously reported solvent-vapor-assisted casting method, taken as an understanding-guided optimization, pushes the optimal system’s efficiency to 19.11%. Furthermore, PTVT‑T-containing systems clearly show better light soaking and thermal stability than the PTQ10 binary control system, benefiting from the durable polymer matrix. Our work provides a useful approach for developing efficient, stable, and low-cost OSCs based on state-of-the-art donor/acceptor systems through morphology control of the ternary design.

Abstract:Tandem solar cells have the potential to improve photon conversion efficiencies (PCEs) beyond the limits of single-junction devices. In this study, a triple-junction tandem design is demonstrated by employing three distinct organic donor materials having bandgap energies ranging from 1.4 to 1.9 eV. Through optical modeling, balanced photon absorption rates are achieved and, thereby, the photo currents are matched among the three subcells. Accordingly, an efficient triple-junction tandem organic solar cell can exhibit a record-high PCE of 11.5%.

Abstract:Fabricating ternary solar cells (TSCs) is a promising strategy to improve the power conversion efficiency of organic photovoltaics without introducing sophisticated processing procedures. We report in this work high efficiency TSCs with the maximum PCE over 11% by introducing a medium band gap conjugated polymer PCDTBT8 into the PffBT4T-2OD:PC71BM binary photovoltaic system. Morphological investigation shows that the third component PCDTBT8 locates at the interface between PffBT4T-2OD and PC71BM without disrupting the crystallization of PffBT4T-2OD to maintain decent charge mobility, and loosens the fullerene aggregation networks to facilitate exciton dissociation. The efficient Förster energy transfer from PCDTBT8 to PffBT4T-2OD enables the ternary devices to retain a high short-circuit current density despite the slightly decreased light absorption. Device physics studies suggest that the addition of PCDTBT8 can enhance the built-in voltage, prolong the carrier lifetime, reduce the defect density and suppress the trap-assisted charge recombination, leading to an improved FF and VOC to enhance the efficiency of ternary devices.
A Random Terpolymer Donor with Similar Monomers Enables 18.28% Efficiency Binary Organic Solar Cells with Well Polymer Batch Reproducibility

Abstract:Herein, by using two fluorinated and chlorinated monomers with similar structures in different molar ratios and dithieno[3′,2′:3,4;2″,3″:5,6]benzo[1,2-c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (DTBT) as the third unit, a family of polymer donors D18, D18–20%Cl, D18–40%Cl, and D18–Cl are synthesized for OSCs. With appropriate chlorinated monomer proportion, the terpolymer D18–20%Cl exhibits proper HOMO energy level and higher packing density compared with that of other control polymers. Moreover, the D18–20%Cl:Y6 blend films have favorable morphology with better face-on crystallization and better charge transport. Consequently, the D18–20%Cl:Y6-based OSCs obtain a top-ranked PCE of 18.28% with overall improved device parameters compared to the controlled D18:Y6 or D18-Cl:Y6-based OSCs (17.50% or 17.02%), which represents the highest PCE for the reported terpolymer-based binary OSCs. Notably, the D18–20%Cl:Y6-based OSCs exhibit over 17% efficiency in a wide molecular weight range. These results demonstrate that the ternary copolymerization of DTBT and two similar moieties is an efficient approach for achieving efficient terpolymer donors with well batch-to-batch reproducibility.

Improved Blend Film Morphology and Free Carrier Generation Provide a High-Performance Ternary Polymer Solar Cell

Abstract:Non-fullerene organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have displayed the highest power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) among OPVs. Herein, we describe a two-donor (PM6, TPD-3F)/one-acceptor (Y6) ternary blend having an optimized blend morphology that leads to improved OPV performance. Because TPD-3F has a HOMO energy level deeper than that of PM6, the value of VOC of the corresponding ternary device increased. Good miscibility between PM6 and TPD-3F, in conjunction with device optimization through the use of 1-chloronaphthalene as an additive, provided an optimized ternary blend morphology for efficient exciton dissociation and carrier transport and, therefore, larger PCE. Compared with the preoptimized PM6:Y6 binary device, the ternary device functioned with improvements in its short-circuit current density, value of VOC, and fill factor. As a result, the device PCE improved from 15.5 ± 0.19 to 16.6 ± 0.25% under AM 1.5G (100 mW cm–2) irradiation. The champion cell exhibited a PCE of 17.0%—a value that is one of the highest for a ternary OPV. Conjugated Donor–Acceptor Terpolymers Toward High‐Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:The development of conjugated alternating donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers with various electron-rich and electron-deficient units in polymer backbones has boosted the power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 17% for polymer solar cells (PSCs) over the past two decades. However, further enhancements in PCEs for PSCs are still imperative to compensate their imperfect stability for fulfilling practical applications. Meanwhile development of these alternating D-A copolymers is highly demanding in creative design and syntheses of novel D and/or A monomers. In this regard, when being possible to adopt an existing monomer unit as a third component from its libraries, either a D ' unit or an A ' moiety, to the parent D-A type polymer backbones to afford conjugated D-A terpolymers, it will give a facile and cost-effective method to improve their light absorption and tune energy levels and also interchain packing synergistically. Moreover, the rationally controlled stoichiometry for these components in such terpolymers also provides access for further fine-tuning these factors, thus resulting in high-performance PSCs. Herein, based on their unique features, the recent progress of conjugated D-A terpolymers for efficient PSCs is reviewed and it is discussed how these factors influence their photovoltaic performance, for providing useful guidelines to design new terpolymers toward high-efficiency PSCs.
