Abstract:Coal is one of the most important fossil fuels for energy, but it can cause serious polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution to the environment. In this work, the distribution, sources, influencing factors, and risk assessment of PAHs were studied in a soil of typical coal resource city, Huainan, China. The total concentration of 16 PAHs classified by USEPA in 47 soils ranged from 109.94 to 1105.30 ng/g with a mean concentration of 528.06 ng/g. The PAH concentration was higher in soil of this area than most of the agricultural, urban and industrial soils and lower than some coal mine and coal-fired power plant areas in the world. The principal component analysis (PCA) and diagnostic ratios demonstrated that PAHs in soils were mainly from the coal combustion and refined petroleum products. The total organic carbon (TOC, p < 0.01) and black carbon (BC, p < 0.01) can significantly influence PAH inventories in soils, particularly for PAHs with high molecular weight. In addition, the significantly positive correlations between PAHs in feed coal (p < 0.05), fly ash (p < 0.01), particulate matter (PM1-2.5 and PM2.5-10, p < 0.01) and PAHs in soils revealed that the emission sources and deposition processes were also the main factors affecting PAH contents in soils. The estimated values of incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for children and adults were higher than 10(-4) at all sampling sites, suggesting high carcinogenic risks for local residents, and the most important exposure route for PAHs was dermal absorption. These findings are valuable for assessing the health risk of PAHs in soils around typical coal mine and coal-fired power plants and highlight the urgency of taking actions to control and reduce the carcinogenic risks for local residents.

Abstract:In order to evaluate soil-associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution from coal mine activities in Tiefa coal mine, Northeast China, 16 PAHs identified as priority pollutants by US Environmental Pollution Agency were determined in mining zone soil (MZS), agricultural soil (AS), local lake bank soil (LBS), a vertical soil profile and three coal gangue samples. The total concentration of 16 PAHs (defined as Sigma(16)PAH, dry weight) in surface soil ranged from 5.1 to 5642.3 ng g(-1), with an arithmetic mean of 1118.3 ng g(-1). Sigma(16)PAH values at the sites from MZS are significantly higher than those found in AS and LBS. The vertical distribution of PAHs indicated that these compounds can penetrate the deeper layers of the soil, especially the low-rings compounds. A complex of petrogenic origin and pyrolytic sources was found within the study area, as suggested by the isomeric ratios of PAHs. According to principal component analysis (PCA), four factors were identified in the source contribution, including coal combustion, unburned coal particulates, coal gangue and vehicular emissions. The degree of contamination and the PAH toxicity assessment suggested that the soils of the study area have been seriously polluted and pose a high potential health risk.

Abstract:In this study, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in 157 concurrently collected soil samples in 2005 over China. Higher concentration of ∑ 16 PAHs was found in urban soil, followed by rural and background soil. The results indicated that PAHs in Chinese surface soil showed a primary distribution pattern, which was confirmed by the positive correlation with emission inventory. Based on the results of literature over the past 10 years (2004–2013) in China, the spatial distribution of PAHs in urban and rural soil was established. An obvious geographical distribution with PAH concentration was found, as higher in Eastern China and lower in Middle and Western China. Furthermore, PAH pollution in Chinese riverbank soil was summarized and showed higher levels, indicating their potential sources from polluted rivers. According to our knowledge, this is the first time to comprehensively study the PAH pollution status in Chinese surface soil on the national scale based on monitoring results.
Assessing The Spatial Distribution Of Soil Pahs And Their Relationship With Anthropogenic Activities At A National Scale

Abstract:Soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution is a major concern due to its negative impact on soil quality around the world. In China, accurate data on soil PAHs and information on the relationship with anthropogenic activities are limited. In this study, about 30,800 samples from 1833 soil sample sites were reviewed from 306 published reports to build a soil PAHs database. Based on the data obtained, the results demonstrated that 24.11% of surface soils in China are heavily contaminated. Meanwhile, the concentration of soil PAHs varied, in the order of independent mining and industrial areas (IMIA) > urban areas > suburban areas > rural areas, and the spatial distribution in China demonstrated a descending trend from north to south. Moreover, the characteristic ratio and PCA-MLR (principal component analysis-multiple linear regression) analysis demonstrated that coal combustion and vehicular exhaust emissions were the main sources of soil PAH pollution in China. On the other hand, provincial total Sigma(16)PAHs in surface soil were significantly correlated with the per square kilometer GDP (gross domestic product) of industrial land, the per capita GDP, as well as the production and consumption of energy. These results indicate that anthropogenic factors have greatly affected the levels of soil PAHs in China. This study improves our understanding on the status and sources of soil PAH contamination in China, thereby facilitating the implementation of strategies of prevention, control, and remediation of soils.

Abstract:The concentrations, profiles, sources and spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in 40 surface soil samples collected from Beijing, Tianjin and surrounding areas, North China in 2007, and all sampling sites were far from industrial areas, roadsides and other pollution sources, and across a range of soil types in remote, rural villages and urban areas. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs ranged from 31.6 to 1475.0 ng/g, with an arithmetic average of 336.4 ng/g. The highest PAH concentrations were measured in urban soils, followed by rural village soils and soils from remote locations. The remote-rural village-urban PAH concentration gradient was related to population density, gross domestic product (GDP), long-range atmospheric transport and different types of land use. In addition, the PAH concentration was well correlated with the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration of the soil. Abstract:Thirty-three soil samples were collected from the Luling, Liuer, and Zhangji coal mines, in the Huaibei and Huainan areas, Anhui Province, China, in 2007. The concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), identified as priority pollutants by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), were determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The sum of 16 US EPA PAHs ranged from 0.13 to 3.54 μg/g (dry weight basis) with a mean concentration of 0.84 μg/g. Among the three sampling sites selected around the coal mines, the site at the Luling coal mine revealed maximum concentration of PAHs, whereas minimum concentration was observed at the site at the Zhangji coal mine. In general, low-molecular-weight PAHs were predominant. The gob pile and coal preparation plant are the sources of PAHs pollution in surface soils in the vicinity of coal mines. The crops in rice paddies might adsorb some PAHs and reduce the PAHs content in soils from paddy fields. The vertical distribution of PAHs in two soil profiles indicates that PAHs contamination in soil profiles tends to occur high in the surface soils and markedly decreases with soil depth. For all depths, PAHs showed a similar distribution pattern, which is an indicator of a similar origin. The total B[ a ]P equivalent concentration (B[ a ]Peq) was found to be maximum at the Luling area, whereas it was minimum at Liuer zones.
Heavy Metal Concentrations of Soils Near the Large Opencast Coal Mine Pits in China.

Abstract:Mining is a common industrial activity and significant source of soil heavy metal (HM) pollution. However, nearly all studies on the effects of mining activities on soil environmental quality have entailed field monitoring of small regions or bibliometric analyses. This study therefore investigated the pollution of surface soils surrounding 135 large opencast coal mining pits in China. A total of 1772 surface soil samples were collected, and the concentrations of eight major HMs were determined. The HM concentrations in this study were relatively lower than the published HM concentrations of coal mine soils from 50 typical Chinese coal mines. However, pollution assessments indicated that Cd, Cu, and As concentrations were concerning. Significant correlations existed between all of the HMs and mining pit area (p < 0.01), as well as between the Pb and Zn concentrations and direction (p < 0.05). Climate conditions had large influences on the HM concentrations. The concentrations of all studied HMs, except for Ni, were highest in Anthrosols and lowest in hydromorphic soils. The concentrations of all HMs, except for Hg, in land use types showed a descending trend of cultivated land > garden plot > grassland. Significantly negative correlations (p < 0.01) between all HM concentrations and elevation were observed. Cr, Zn, and Ni were significantly and positively correlated with the slope, and no HMs, except Cr, showed significant correlations with the parcel area. This paper provides insights for the policymakers regarding soil pollution control and management strategies near coal mine pits.
Increasing contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Chinese soils

Abstract:China is facing a serious threat PAHs contaminated soil. To better understand the current state of soil PAH pollution in China and contribute to the development of feasible prevention and control measures and policies in the future. This study examines the spatiotemporal distributions of soil Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution in China since 2000, and investigates the key factors influencing changes in levels of soil PAHs. The results of the survey on soil PAHs concentration levels in 716 areas were analyzed by visualization of ArcGIS pro data, correlation analysis and linear regression analysis, it was found that the increase in soil PAH pollution in China is concerning. The analysis indicates significant regional disparities, with pollution levels in the north being higher than in the south. Over the 20-year period, the median level of PAHs in soil increased by 476.8 μg/kg. Construction land areas that heavily rely on fossil fuels and industrial activities exhibit significantly higher concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) compared to other land use types. The study identifies key socio-economic factors linked to rising PAH levels, including energy consumption (notably coal and oil), industrial and domestic waste production. Coal consumption is highlighted as the leading factor in PAH concentration changes in 18 provinces, followed by industrial waste in 6 provinces. Future projections up to 2030 suggest continued influence of these factors on soil PAH levels. The research emphasizes the urgent necessity for comprehensive soil management policies to address the growing PAH pollution, offering insights into its dynamics and contributing factors in China.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization in China, soil pollution at contaminated sites has emerged as a significant concern in the environmental protection plan. Moreover, extensive research has focused on the analysis of other major contaminants. However, over the past two decades, only a few studies have systematically analyzed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soils, particularly their source identification, contamination level assessment, and risk evaluation. This study addressed these research gaps by comprehensively evaluating soil PAHs contamination at these sites through the collection and screening of relevant literature data from the past 20 years using a “front page filtering” approach. The results suggested that the most contaminated sites in China were associated with petrochemical plants, steel mills, and coking plants. Coal/biomass burning emerged as the predominant source of PAHs pollution in the soils of contaminated sites across China. Overall, the soils of contaminated sites exhibited relatively low levels of PAHs contamination. The single-factor index method showed that benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) was the PAH monomer with the highest contamination level. Geographically, Northeast and North China exhibited relatively higher contamination levels and ecological risks. Moreover, PAHs posed significant health hazards, as they exhibited significantly high toxic effects on the respiratory system, carcinogenicity, aromatic hydrocarbon receptors, estrogen receptors, and antioxidant response elements. Additionally, children and youths faced higher health risks than adults. The findings from this study provide a solid basis for developing strategies to manage PAHs at contaminated sites in China.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their hazards in surface soil ( n = 92) were investigated in Taizhou, China, which is an area in East China famous for production and exporting of rice. Total concentrations of PAHs in soils ranged from 2.3 × 10 1 to 7.6 × 10 2 with a mean of 1.8 × 10 2 μg/kg (dry mass; dm). Concentrations of 16 PAHs reported here were less than those observed in most previous studies in China and other countries. Concentrations of individual PAH in fluvo-aquic soils were greater than those in paddy soils except naphthalene. Fluoranthene and pyrene were dominant PAHs, which accounted for 19.7 and 13.3 % of the total mass of PAHs, respectively. Based on ratios of low molecular weight PAHs to high molecular weight PAHs, diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis, the predominant source of PAHs was combustion and pyrolysis, especially coal, natural gas, gasoline and diesel emissions from traffic, as well as burning of straw. Carcinogenic potencies of 13 samples were 1.1- to 2.9-fold greater than the target values promulgated by the Netherlands, indicating increased carcinogenic risks of soils from these sites. However, risks of cancer via accidental ingestion, dermal absorption and inhalation to humans posed by PAHs in soil were relatively small.

Abstract:The coal mining subsidence area in Huainan is a specific but common ecosystem in China. Not a lot of researches focusing on persistent organic pollutants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in this area have been done. In order to investigate the concentrations, sources, environmental fate of PAHs and its distribution factors, Yangzhuang and Xieqiao coal mining subsidence areas in Huainan, China were determined as the object of the research, where samples from different depths of soil and sediments were collected to detect and analyze PAHs with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. The result showed that the 16 PAH compounds were all detected with a detection rate of 100%. The concentrations of PAHs at different depths of the soil and sediments of Yangzhuang were in the range of 42.1-22149.0 and 44.0-7644.2 ng/g, respectively, and in Xieqiao which were in the range of 17.8-1617.7 and 35.7-264.6 ng/g, respectively. Through comparing the results about spatial interpolation analyses of two subsidence areas, we found that PAHs pollution in soil was heavier than that in sediments of the subsidence areas with relatively small man-made interference. Man-made pollution had a great influence on the vertical distribution of PAHs in the subsidence areas. The PAHs with three or four rings dominated in the areas. Using diagnostic ratios, we found PAHs came from mixed pollutions including the combustion of coal and traffic pollution. As for the influence factors, based on regression analysis and Pearson correlation analysis, the increase of organic matters (OM) and total organic carbon (TOC) favored the deposition of PAHs and had a positive impact on the vertical distribution of PAHs.
Source tracing of potentially toxic elements in soils around a typical coking plant in an industrial area in northern China

Abstract:Coking plants are a substantial source of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soil. In this study, we examined the concentration of PTEs, the soil physicochemical properties, and the Pb isotopes in the soil inside and around a coking plant in an industrial city in northern China. We analyzed the spatial distribution of PTEs and the pollution risk areas by Igeo index, the enrichment factor (EF), and the Nemerow index, and we quantitatively identified the contribution of PTE pollution sources in the soil on a small- and medium-scale (plant and work section). Our results indicated that the Hg concentration inside the plant and the Cd concentration in the agricultural land around the plant were both relatively high. A comprehensive analysis of the soil in the study area was performed using the positive matrix factorization model and Pb isotope (206/207Pb, 208/206Pb) tracing method, based on the MixSIAR model, this analysis indicated that burning coal was the main source of Pb both inside (46.8%) and outside (26.3%) the coking plant. The pollution emission sources with significant influence on the soil outside the coking plant were diesel vehicles (12.5%), gas tanks (12.4%), and coke ovens (11.5%), while the sources inside the plant were quenching sections (11.1%), atmospheric deposition (11.0%), coke oven sections (9.6%), and diesel vehicles (6.1%). The results of PTE pollution risk zoning and Pb isotope tracing indicated that pollution is more serious in the western part of the plant, which is the area where coking and gas production takes place, and the most serious pollution outside the plant is mainly distributed to the southeast. This study provides theoretical and practical data indicating the contribution of industrial enterprises to soil pollution, and will help identify pollution responsibility and the management of pollution sources.

Abstract:Mining activities are among the main sources of heavy metal contamination in the environment. To analyze heavy metal pollution of soils from coal mines in China, we assessed pollution and potential ecological risk, compared heavy metal concentrations between soils from coal mines and soils from metal mines and identified the relationship between heavy metals on the nationwide scale. The data of heavy metal concentrations for 50 coal mines and 35 metal mines were collected from the published literature. Coal mines referred in this paper are distributed in 18 provinces and 4 climatic zones in China. Methods including Index of geoaccumulation ( I geo ), Nemerow pollution index ( P ), potential ecological risk index and other statistics (Pearson correlation method and ANOVA variance analysis) were utilized. Compared with soils influenced by metal mining, heavy metal concentrations in soils from coal mines were much lower. For heavy metals, higher I geo for Cd, Pb and Ni was observed. Soils were contaminated or slightly contaminated when calculated based on Chinese soil guidelines (grade I and grade II) but slightly contaminated or severely contaminated when calculated based on province backgrounds. Most heavy metals (i.e., As, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn) showed a low potential ecological risk, whereas Cd, Pb and Hg showed slightly higher ecological risk potential. Statistically significant and positive correlations were found in pairs of As/Cr, As/Ni, As/Pb, As/Hg, Ni/Cr and Ni/Cu ( P < 0.01) and Cu/Pb ( P < 0.05).

Abstract:Sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in 11 surface soil samples from an iron and steel plant in northeast of China and its surrounding areas, including residential and scenic areas, were analyzed by GC-MS(Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry). The concentrations of ∑ PAHs were 3. 39 × 103—1. 54 × 105 ng·g - 1 with a mean of 3. 21 × 104 ng·g - 1 in the iron and steel industrial park, 587—6. 70 × 103 ng·g - 1 with a mean of 3. 82 × 103 ng·g - 1 in the surrounding residential area, and 385 ng·g - 1 in the scenic. The concentrations of ∑PAHs and Bap in the industrial areas were the highest, followed by the residential area. Compared with other studies, the soils in the iron and steel industrial plant and its surrounding residential area were heavily polluted by PAHs. Nine of total 11 soil samples showed serious contamination by PAHs. Moreover, Bap concentrations in 4 samples exceeded the limit of Canada Soil Quality standard. Source analysis was performed using Diagnostic Rate and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) methods. The results showed that coal and diesel combustion contributed to PAHs pollution in the iron and steel industrial park. Moreover, vehicle gasoline and diesel emission was another important source of PAHs pollution in the surrounding area along with industrial emission.

Abstract:17 representative soil samples and 1coal slack sample were collected in the surroundings of Luling Coal Mine in Huaibei Province,China.The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)in the collected samples were detemined by gas chromatography equipped with a mass spectrometry detector(GC-MS).The distribution and transportation behavior of PAHs were analyzed and the environmental impact of the PAHs in the soil of the coal mine was further evaluated.The results showed that the concentrations of 28PAHs in the collected soil samples ranged from 0.35to 6.21μg/g,with an average concentration of 1.69μg/g,among which 16PAHs are USEPA priority PAHs.The total contents of these 16PAHs ranged from 0.23to 3.53μg/g,with the average contents being 1.00μg/g.Compared with the relevant standards of organic pollutants in the soil,these typical regions were moderately or highly polluted according to the concentrations of∑16PAHs.It was further discovered that the sources of PAHs were gob piles and combustion of biomass.A toxicity assessment indicates that the environmental risks for PAHs are mainly BghiP whoseTEQ accounts for 60.68%of the total value.
Distribution, sources, and potential risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils from an industrial district in Shanxi, China

Abstract:Concentration, composition profile, orientation distribution, sources, and potential risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in 76 surface (0–25 cm) soil samples collected from the Changzhi industrial district in July 2014 using a gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS QP2010 Ultra) system. The composition patterns of the PAHs were dominated by the presence of four-ring PAHs (average 42.9%), followed by three-ring (average 25.9%), five-ring PAHs (average 25.6%), two-ring PAHs (average 5.03%), and lastly, six-ring PAHs (average 0.641%). Source apportionment of the soil PAHs was also performed by the diagnostic ratios, principal component analysis (PCA), and coefficient of divergence (CD) analysis indicated signatures of PAHs sources (including incineration, coal/wood combustion, and vehicular exhaust emission). The total concentration of 16 PAHs (∑16PAHs) found in the roadsides soils (RS) ranged from 2197 to 25,041 μg kg−1, with an arithmetic mean value of 12,245 μg kg−1; followed by the village soils (VS), which ranged from 2059 to 21,240 μg kg−1, with a mean of 8976 μg kg−1; and lastly, the agricultural soils (AS), which ranged from 794 to 16,858 μg kg−1, with a mean of 3456 μg kg−1. According to the numerical effect-based soils quality guidelines of Maliszewska-Kordybach, the levels of PAHs in the sampled industrial areas range from high to heavy contamination. The values of total benzo[a]pyrene toxicity equivalent values (∑Bapeq16PAHs) in the sample areas ranged from 0.087 to 3611 μg kg−1 with an average of 969 μg kg−1. According to the soil quality guidelines of Canada, values found in the highest range (100 μg kg−1), which are equal to those of ∑Bapeq16PAHs found in the industrial area samples, will exert adverse biological effects. The results of this research could potentially be useful for local governments to control toxicity exposure, promote actions to alleviate PAHs contamination, and to manage human health at both work and industrial areas.

Abstract:AbstractConcentrations, composition profiles, sources, and health risks of 16 USEPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban soils from 23 cities across China based on metadata collected from previous studies between 2005 and 2021 were investigated. ΣPAH concentrations in urban soils from 23 cities across China ranged from 0.1231 to 17.2000 mg/kg (mean = 2.7171 ± 3.8276 mg/kg). Overall PAH contamination in urban soils across China was moderate compared to that in global cities. Based on energy consumption and climate conditions, the spatial distributions of mean ΣPAH concentrations in Northeast China were highest, followed by those in North China, West China, East China, and South China. Individual PAH composition profiles decreased in the order: 4-ring PAHs (41.36%) > 5-ring PAHs (21.77%) > 3-ring PAHs (18.53%) > 6-ring PAHs (14.00%) > 2-ring PAHs (2.27%). Diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization (PMF) revealed that PAHs in urban soils were mainly derived from fossil fuel combustion (from coal, natural gas, and biomass), especially in North, Northeast, and East China, with smaller contributions from petrogenic sources. Health risk assessment results suggest that although there are potential cancer risks from PAHs, risks were acceptable. Toxic equivalent concentration (TEQ) and the corresponding oral cancer slope factor (CFS0) contributed most to the uncertainty of total risks. This study will help develop strategies to reduce PAH risk management in urban soils in China.

Abstract:The quality of urban soil is closely related to the safety of public places and the guarantee of food quality. This study investigated the level, distribution, source, and carcinogenic risk of 16 U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban, agricultural, and montane soil in Taiyuan. The ∑16PAHs level varied from 104.78 to 6594.63 ng g−1 with a mean of 922.93 ng g−1, and 47.73% of the soil samples were severely contaminated, with a concentration higher than 600 ng g−1. PAHs with higher molecular weight (≥4 rings) were dominant in PAHs profiles accounting for 80.92%. In the spatial distribution of PAHs, hotspots of ∑16 PAHs were observed near the industries, indicating pollutants emitted by the industries directly affect the surrounding soil quality. The sources identified by positive matrix factorization (PMF) indicated: coal combustion (40.77%), vehicle exhausts (32.94%), biomass combustion (14.89%), and coking source (11.40%). Coal-related sources (coal and coking sources) were the major contributors (52.17%) to PAHs and carcinogenic risk (46.48%) assessed by BaP toxic equivalent concentration in total soils. Therefore, the extensive usage of coal was the leading factor for PAH pollution and health risk in Taiyuan soil.

Abstract:This work investigated the spatial profile and source analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil that surrounds coal-fired power plants in Xuzhou, China. High-throughput sequencing was employed to investigate the composition and structure of soil bacterial communities. The total concentration of 15 PAHs in the surface soils ranged from 164.87 to 3494.81 μg/kg dry weight. The spatial profile of PAHs was site-specific with a concentration of 1400.09–3494.81 μg/kg in Yaozhuang. Based on the qualitative and principal component analysis results, coal burning and vehicle emission were found to be the main sources of PAHs in the surface soils. The phylogenetic analysis revealed differences in bacterial community compositions among different sampling sites. Proteobacteria was the most abundant phylum, while Acidobacteria was the second most abundant. The orders of Campylobacterales, Desulfobacterales and Hydrogenophilales had the most significant differences in relative abundance among the sampling sites. The redundancy analysis revealed that the differences in bacterial communities could be explained by the organic matter content. They could also be explicated by the acenaphthene concentration with longer arrows. Furthermore, OTUs of Proteobacteria phylum plotted around particular samples were confirmed to have a different composition of Proteobacteria phylum among the sample sites. Evaluating the relationship between soil PAHs concentration and bacterial community composition may provide useful information for the remediation of PAH contaminated sites.
