Abstract:To probe into the concentration, composition and other pollution characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the surface sediments of coal mining subsidence water, Yangzhuang coal mining subsidence waters in Panyi Mine of China are determined as the object of this research, where 11 surface sediment samples are collected to detect and analyze PAHs with a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) and make source apportionment with factor analysis and ecological risk assessment. The results show that 16 kinds of PAHs have all been detected, with the content level of Sigma PAHs reaching 55 to 755 ng g(-1) and the average content of that reaching 288 ng g(-1). PAHs with three or four rings dominate. The pollution level of PAHs is quite low and mostly comes from combustion and oil. Most of these 16 kinds of PAHs have been proved to be of no potential ecological risk.

Abstract:This study was conducted to investigate the pollutant status and the retention mechanism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils and sediment from bank-water-level-fluctuating zone (WLFZ)-water systems in Hanfeng Lake, Three Gorges, China. The concentrations of the 16 PAHs ranged from 21.8 to 1324ng g(-1) dry wt for all 20 soil and sediment samples. These concentration levels were remarkably lower than those in soils and sediment collected domestically and worldwide. PAHs with two and three rings were found to be dominant in all the samples, with phenanthrene being most abundant. The spatial distribution of PAHs in bank soil, WLFZ soil, and sediment implied that the transfer and fate of PAHs in the bank soil-WLFZ soil-sediment systems were influenced by both water dynamic factors and physicochemical properties of PAHs. Diagnostic ratio analysis and principal component analysis suggested that the PAHs in the areas of Hanfeng Lake were primarily (>75%) derived from coal combustion and vehicle emissions . Use of natural gas, improving gasoline/diesel quality and phasing out old and nonstandard vehicles and ships are proposed to control PAH contamination and protect drinking water safety in the region.

Abstract:The residual levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water, suspended particular matter (SPM) and sediment from Lake Chaohu were measured with a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The spatial-temporal distributions and the SPM-water partition of PAHs and their influencing factors were investigated. The potential sources and contributions of PAHs in the sediment were estimated by positive matrix factorization (PMF) and probabilistic stable isotopic analysis (PSIA). The results showed that the average residual levels of total PAHs (PAH16) in the water, SPM and sediment were 170.7 +/- 70.8 ng/L, 210.7 +/- 160.7 ng/L and 908.5 +/- 1878.1 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The same spatial distribution trend of PAH16 in the water, SPM and sediment was found from high to low: river inflows > western lake > eastern lake > water source area. There was an obvious seasonal trend of PAH16 in the water, while no obvious seasonal trend was found in the SPM. The residues and distributions of PAHs in the water, SPM and sediment relied heavily on carbon content. Significant Pearson correlations were found between LogK(oc) and LogK(ow) as well as some hydro-meteorological factors. Abstract:The Loess Plateau, as the key energy base of China, has sensitive responses to the global changes, and receives polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from anthropogenic activities. However, understanding how anthropogenic and climate factors affect synergistically the PAHs distribution in this vulnerable ecological environment is deficient. Here the spatiotemporal distribution of PAHs in sediments from a typical river of the Loess Plateau were investigated. The PAHs were mainly from coal combustion in the range of 194-514 ng g-1, and their concentrations were generally higher in normal season than wet season as the dilution effect of high river discharge and strong precipitation. The interactive effects of land-use and precipitation showed PAHs enriched in forest-grass land were transferred into rivers through surface and subsurface runoff during light rainfall, resulting in the increase of the PAHs concentrations in river sediments. In contrast, large precipitation in wet season would obscure any spatial variations. In addition, human activities, especially energy production, directly enhanced PAHs accumulation in river sediments due to the emission from the production processing of oil and coal, and indirectly influenced the PAHs by impacting the per capita GDP. These findings had important implications for the management and prediction of PAH accumulation.

Abstract:The quality of urban soil is closely related to the safety of public places and the guarantee of food quality. This study investigated the level, distribution, source, and carcinogenic risk of 16 U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban, agricultural, and montane soil in Taiyuan. The ∑16PAHs level varied from 104.78 to 6594.63 ng g−1 with a mean of 922.93 ng g−1, and 47.73% of the soil samples were severely contaminated, with a concentration higher than 600 ng g−1. PAHs with higher molecular weight (≥4 rings) were dominant in PAHs profiles accounting for 80.92%. In the spatial distribution of PAHs, hotspots of ∑16 PAHs were observed near the industries, indicating pollutants emitted by the industries directly affect the surrounding soil quality. The sources identified by positive matrix factorization (PMF) indicated: coal combustion (40.77%), vehicle exhausts (32.94%), biomass combustion (14.89%), and coking source (11.40%). Coal-related sources (coal and coking sources) were the major contributors (52.17%) to PAHs and carcinogenic risk (46.48%) assessed by BaP toxic equivalent concentration in total soils. Therefore, the extensive usage of coal was the leading factor for PAH pollution and health risk in Taiyuan soil.

Abstract:China is facing a serious threat PAHs contaminated soil. To better understand the current state of soil PAH pollution in China and contribute to the development of feasible prevention and control measures and policies in the future. This study examines the spatiotemporal distributions of soil Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution in China since 2000, and investigates the key factors influencing changes in levels of soil PAHs. The results of the survey on soil PAHs concentration levels in 716 areas were analyzed by visualization of ArcGIS pro data, correlation analysis and linear regression analysis, it was found that the increase in soil PAH pollution in China is concerning. The analysis indicates significant regional disparities, with pollution levels in the north being higher than in the south. Over the 20-year period, the median level of PAHs in soil increased by 476.8 μg/kg. Construction land areas that heavily rely on fossil fuels and industrial activities exhibit significantly higher concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) compared to other land use types. The study identifies key socio-economic factors linked to rising PAH levels, including energy consumption (notably coal and oil), industrial and domestic waste production. Coal consumption is highlighted as the leading factor in PAH concentration changes in 18 provinces, followed by industrial waste in 6 provinces. Future projections up to 2030 suggest continued influence of these factors on soil PAH levels. The research emphasizes the urgent necessity for comprehensive soil management policies to address the growing PAH pollution, offering insights into its dynamics and contributing factors in China.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization in China, soil pollution at contaminated sites has emerged as a significant concern in the environmental protection plan. Moreover, extensive research has focused on the analysis of other major contaminants. However, over the past two decades, only a few studies have systematically analyzed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soils, particularly their source identification, contamination level assessment, and risk evaluation. This study addressed these research gaps by comprehensively evaluating soil PAHs contamination at these sites through the collection and screening of relevant literature data from the past 20 years using a “front page filtering” approach. The results suggested that the most contaminated sites in China were associated with petrochemical plants, steel mills, and coking plants. Coal/biomass burning emerged as the predominant source of PAHs pollution in the soils of contaminated sites across China. Overall, the soils of contaminated sites exhibited relatively low levels of PAHs contamination. The single-factor index method showed that benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) was the PAH monomer with the highest contamination level. Geographically, Northeast and North China exhibited relatively higher contamination levels and ecological risks. Moreover, PAHs posed significant health hazards, as they exhibited significantly high toxic effects on the respiratory system, carcinogenicity, aromatic hydrocarbon receptors, estrogen receptors, and antioxidant response elements. Additionally, children and youths faced higher health risks than adults. The findings from this study provide a solid basis for developing strategies to manage PAHs at contaminated sites in China.

Abstract:AbstractConcentrations, composition profiles, sources, and health risks of 16 USEPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban soils from 23 cities across China based on metadata collected from previous studies between 2005 and 2021 were investigated. ΣPAH concentrations in urban soils from 23 cities across China ranged from 0.1231 to 17.2000 mg/kg (mean = 2.7171 ± 3.8276 mg/kg). Overall PAH contamination in urban soils across China was moderate compared to that in global cities. Based on energy consumption and climate conditions, the spatial distributions of mean ΣPAH concentrations in Northeast China were highest, followed by those in North China, West China, East China, and South China. Individual PAH composition profiles decreased in the order: 4-ring PAHs (41.36%) > 5-ring PAHs (21.77%) > 3-ring PAHs (18.53%) > 6-ring PAHs (14.00%) > 2-ring PAHs (2.27%). Diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization (PMF) revealed that PAHs in urban soils were mainly derived from fossil fuel combustion (from coal, natural gas, and biomass), especially in North, Northeast, and East China, with smaller contributions from petrogenic sources. Health risk assessment results suggest that although there are potential cancer risks from PAHs, risks were acceptable. Toxic equivalent concentration (TEQ) and the corresponding oral cancer slope factor (CFS0) contributed most to the uncertainty of total risks. This study will help develop strategies to reduce PAH risk management in urban soils in China.

Recent Distribution and Sources of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Surface Soils from Yangtze River Delta

Abstract:A total of 243 surface soil samples collected from 11 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region were analyzed for the concentrations, spatial distribution, component profiles and emission sources of 29 PAH species. The analytical results indicated the total concentrations of PAHs in Yangtze River Delta fell in the range from 21. 0 ng x g(-1) to 3 578.5 ng x g(-1) with an arithmetic mean and standard deviation of 310.6 ng x g(-1) and 459.1 ng x g(-1), respectively. Our data showed spatial distribution of PAHs concentrations varied greatly in the region. In addition, the contents of PAHs were positively correlated with the total organic carbon fractions in topsoil. The sites with the highest levels of PAHs in the 11 cities studied were located in Suzhou with 759.0 ng x g(-1) +/- 132.9 ng x g(-1) ollowed by the areas of Wuxi and Shanghai, with the total PAHs concentrations of 565. 3 ng x g(-1) +/- 705.5 ng x g(-1) and 349.4 ng g(-1) 220. 1 ng-g(-1) respectively. The profiles of different components pointed to a predominant role of the species with 2-4 rings, and especially for the low molecular weight components with 2-3 rings. A preliminary identification on emission sources of local PAHs was performed by the specific ratios of isomeric species and principal component analysis (PCA). The results designated industrial coal and biomass combustion as the main mixed emission sources of PAHs in surface soils from Yangtze River Delta, and tail gas from transport as another major source in some areas.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread in the environment and pose a serious threat to the soil ecosystem. In order to better understand the health risks for residents exposed to PAH-contaminated soil, 173 surface soil samples were collected in Shanxi Province, China, to detect the levels of 16 priority PAHs. The spatial distribution patterns of PAHs were explored using interpolation and spatial clustering analysis, and the probable sources of soil PAHs were identified for different land-use covers. The results indicate that the soil Σ16 PAH concentration ranged from 22.12 to 1337.82 ng g−1, with a mean of 224.21 ng g−1. The soils were weakly to moderately contaminated by high molecular weight PAHs (3–5 ring) and the Taiyuan–Linfen Basin was the most polluted areas. In addition, the concentration of soil PAHs on construction land was higher than that on other land-use covers. Key sources of soil PAHs were related to industrial activities dominated by coal burning, coking, and heavy traffic. Based on the exposure risk assessment of PAHs, more than 10% of the area was revealed to be likely to suffer from high carcinogenic risks for children. The study maps the high-risk distribution of soil PAHs in Shanxi Province and provides PAH pollution reduction strategies for policy makers to prevent adverse health risks to residents.

Abstract:The spatial variation in concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface soils in the North China Plain and the influential factors were examined in the present study. High concentrations of the sum of 16 PAHs (?PAH16) appeared in cities and their surrounding areas. Emissions and soil organic carbon (SOC) content significantly regulated spatial differentiation of PAH contamination in soils in the study area. Compared with emissions, concentrations of individual and total PAHs in soils were more closely controlled by the SOC content. Furthermore, concentrations of PAH species with lower molecular weight (e.g., two- or three-ring) in surface soils were more strongly correlated with the SOC content in comparison with those of higher molecular weight (e.g., five- or six-ring), mainly because of their higher saturated vapor pressure, thus higher mobility. The spatial variation of PAH species in soils in the North China Plain tended to be larger with increasing benzene ring numbers, and the difference in physicochemical properties of PAH species determined their distinct spatial distribution characteristics. The present study highlights the relative importance of emissions and SOC content in spatial variation of PAHs and the dependence of the spatial distribution characteristics of PAH species in surface soils on their physicochemical properties at a regional scale. Abstract:With the acceleration of urbanization and industrialization, the content and pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban soils have been sources of widespread concern. Taking Shizuishan City as an example, the spatial distribution characteristics of PAHs in 156 surface soil samples (0-20 cm) from eight urban functional areas were analyzed. Single factor and Nemero composite indices, as well as a lifetime cancer risk increment model were used to evaluate PAHs pollution in soils. The sources of PAHs were analyzed using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. The results showed that the mean value of PAHs in the surface soil of Shizuishan City was 489.82 ng·g-1 and the coefficient of variation of 15 PAHs except for Pyr were more than 100%, indicating strong variation. The PAH contents of urban surface soils in different functional areas showed the following:traffic area (1217.61 ng·g-1) > industrial area (809.58 ng·g-1) > park (273.66 ng·g-1) > cultural and educational area (268.18 ng·g-1) > commercial area (240.05 ng·g-1) > agricultural area (226.81 ng·g-1) > medical area (211.90 ng·g-1) > residential area (183.49 ng·g-1). The Nemero composite index showed that 82.58% of the samples had no pollution, and the proportion of slight, mild, and moderate pollution were 6.45%, 4.52%, and 0.65%, respectively. Only 5.8% of the samples had serious pollution. The results of health risk assessment showed that skin contact and ingestion were the main routes of PAH exposure in soil, and the health risk was acceptable. Source analysis showed that the main sources of PAHs in Shizuishan City were traffic emissions, coal combustion, mixed biomass/heavy oil combustion, and oil sources, with contribution rates of 10.5%, 36.6%, 50.3%, and 2.6% respectively, and most of the high values were distributed in industrial or coal production areas. These results could provide reference for the study of soil pollution in industrial cities, and play an important role in preventing soil pollution, ensuring the environmental quality of the soil and human health and safety.

Abstract:Samples were collected from the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China, to study the concentrations, distributions, and compositions of 16 US-EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water and suspended particulate matter (SPM). We also evaluated sources of the PAHs and their potential toxicity. Total concentrations of the PAHs (ΣPAHs) in water ranged from 17.33 to 77.12 ng L−1, and in SPM, the levels ranged from 595.91 to 2473.74 ng g−1. Total concentrations of seven carcinogenic PAHs (ΣCPAHs) ranged from 7.63 to 13.02 ng L−1 in water and 276.55 to 1216.89 ng g−1 in SPM. PAH levels in water samples were relatively low, and those in the lower reaches were higher than in the middle reaches. SPM samples had higher levels of PAHs, especially in the lower reaches and in Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake. Principal component analysis (PCA) with multiple linear regression analysis (MLR) was performed to quantitatively characterize the PAH sources. Two factors and their contributions were identified from water samples. Coal and wood combustion accounted for 74.1 % of the PAHs, and petroleum emissions explained 25.9 % of the PAHs. Three source factors were identified from SPM samples: these were vehicular emissions (46.3 % of PAHs), wood and coal combustion (40.4 % of PAHs), and petrogenic sources (13.3 %). Ecological risk assessment indicated that a moderate undesirable impact will be caused by PAHs, and some control measures and remedial actions should be conducted.

Abstract:Concentration, composition profile, orientation distribution, sources, and potential risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in 76 surface (0–25 cm) soil samples collected from the Changzhi industrial district in July 2014 using a gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS QP2010 Ultra) system. The composition patterns of the PAHs were dominated by the presence of four-ring PAHs (average 42.9%), followed by three-ring (average 25.9%), five-ring PAHs (average 25.6%), two-ring PAHs (average 5.03%), and lastly, six-ring PAHs (average 0.641%). Source apportionment of the soil PAHs was also performed by the diagnostic ratios, principal component analysis (PCA), and coefficient of divergence (CD) analysis indicated signatures of PAHs sources (including incineration, coal/wood combustion, and vehicular exhaust emission). The total concentration of 16 PAHs (∑16PAHs) found in the roadsides soils (RS) ranged from 2197 to 25,041 μg kg−1, with an arithmetic mean value of 12,245 μg kg−1; followed by the village soils (VS), which ranged from 2059 to 21,240 μg kg−1, with a mean of 8976 μg kg−1; and lastly, the agricultural soils (AS), which ranged from 794 to 16,858 μg kg−1, with a mean of 3456 μg kg−1. According to the numerical effect-based soils quality guidelines of Maliszewska-Kordybach, the levels of PAHs in the sampled industrial areas range from high to heavy contamination. The values of total benzo[a]pyrene toxicity equivalent values (∑Bapeq16PAHs) in the sample areas ranged from 0.087 to 3611 μg kg−1 with an average of 969 μg kg−1. According to the soil quality guidelines of Canada, values found in the highest range (100 μg kg−1), which are equal to those of ∑Bapeq16PAHs found in the industrial area samples, will exert adverse biological effects. The results of this research could potentially be useful for local governments to control toxicity exposure, promote actions to alleviate PAHs contamination, and to manage human health at both work and industrial areas.

Abstract:The concentrations, profiles, sources and spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in 40 surface soil samples collected from Beijing, Tianjin and surrounding areas, North China in 2007, and all sampling sites were far from industrial areas, roadsides and other pollution sources, and across a range of soil types in remote, rural villages and urban areas. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs ranged from 31.6 to 1475.0 ng/g, with an arithmetic average of 336.4 ng/g. The highest PAH concentrations were measured in urban soils, followed by rural village soils and soils from remote locations. The remote-rural village-urban PAH concentration gradient was related to population density, gross domestic product (GDP), long-range atmospheric transport and different types of land use. In addition, the PAH concentration was well correlated with the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration of the soil. The PAH profile suggested that coal combustion and biomass burning were primary PAH sources. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Heterologous Spatial Distribution of Soil Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and the Primary Influencing Factors in Three Industrial Parks

Abstract:Soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) generated from industrial processes are highly spatially heterol-ogous, with limited quantitative studies on their main influencing factors. The present study evaluated the soil PAHs in three types of industrial parks (a petrochemical industrial park, a brominated flame retardant manufacturing park, and an e-waste dismantling park) and their surroundings. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs in the parks were 340-2.43 x 103, 26.2-2.63 x 103, and 394-2.01 x 104 ng/g, which were significantly higher than those in the surrounding areas by 1-2 orders of magnitude, respectively. The highest soil PAH contamination was observed in the e-waste dismantling park. Nap can be considered as characteristic pollutant in the petrochemical industrial park, while Phe in the flame retardant manufacturing park and e-waste dismantling park. Low molecular weight PAHs (2-3 rings) predominated in the petrochemical industrial park (73.0%) and the surrounding area of brominated flame retardant manufacturing park (80.3%). However, high molecular weight PAHs (4-6 rings) were enriched in the other sampling sites, indicating distinct sources and determinants of soil PAHs. Source apportionment results suggested that PAHs in the parks were mainly derived from the leakage of petroleum products in the petroleum manufacturing process and pyrolysis or combustion of fossil fuels. Contrarily, the PAHs in the surrounding areas could have been derived from the historical coal combustion and traffic emissions. Source emissions, wind direction, and local topography influenced the PAH spatial distributions.

Abstract:To investigate the environmental behavior of and carcinogenic risk posed by 16 priority-controlled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), soil samples and air samples from the coke oven top were collected in two prototype coking plants (named PF and JD). The PF soils contained more PAHs than the JD soils because the PF plant employed the side-charging technique and had a lower coke oven height. The soils from both plants contained enough PAHs to pose a carcinogenic risk, and this risk was higher in the PF plant. Data were collected on the source characteristic spectrum of stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of PAHs emitted from the coke oven top (δ13C values of -36.02‰ to -32.05‰ for gaseous PAHs and -34.09‰ to -25.28‰ for particulate PAHs), and these data fill a research gap and may be referenced for isotopic-technology-based source apportionment. Diagnostic ratios and isotopic technology revealed that the coking plant soils were mainly influenced by the coking process, followed by vehicle exhaust; the soils near the boundary of each plant were slightly affected by C3 plant burning. For most PAHs [excluding fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, indeno(1,2,3-c,d)pyrene, and dibenzo(a,h)anthracene], the dominant migration process was the net volatilization of PAHs from soil to air. In the PF plant, 13C was depleted in gaseous PAHs during volatilization.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their hazards in surface soil ( n = 92) were investigated in Taizhou, China, which is an area in East China famous for production and exporting of rice. Total concentrations of PAHs in soils ranged from 2.3 × 10 1 to 7.6 × 10 2 with a mean of 1.8 × 10 2 μg/kg (dry mass; dm). Concentrations of 16 PAHs reported here were less than those observed in most previous studies in China and other countries. Concentrations of individual PAH in fluvo-aquic soils were greater than those in paddy soils except naphthalene. Fluoranthene and pyrene were dominant PAHs, which accounted for 19.7 and 13.3 % of the total mass of PAHs, respectively. Based on ratios of low molecular weight PAHs to high molecular weight PAHs, diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis, the predominant source of PAHs was combustion and pyrolysis, especially coal, natural gas, gasoline and diesel emissions from traffic, as well as burning of straw. Carcinogenic potencies of 13 samples were 1.1- to 2.9-fold greater than the target values promulgated by the Netherlands, indicating increased carcinogenic risks of soils from these sites. However, risks of cancer via accidental ingestion, dermal absorption and inhalation to humans posed by PAHs in soil were relatively small.
Distribution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Surface Soils of Yinchuan Plain and Surrounding Areas

Abstract:The emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)can result in contamination of soils and agricultural products. In this study, 37 surface soil samples were collected from Yinchuan Plain and the surrounding areas. Sixteen US EPA priority pollutant PAHs were measured individually to address their geographical distribution pattern in soils. The total concentrations of the 16 PAHs varied from 17.2 to 1 199.3 ng·g-1 with arithmetic and geometrical means of 190.6±232.2 ng·g-1 and 125.9 ng·g-1, respectively, which were generally lower than those reported for other areas. The dominant PAHs were two or three ring compounds, typically anthracene and phenanthrene. The isomer based source apportionment suggested that the PAHs were primarily originated from combustion. Uneven spatial distribution was observed with relatively high concentrations found in the north and south areas and relatively low in the east and west ones. The spatial distribution pattern of PAHs was associated with that of emission sources and soil total organic carbon(TOC). The concentrations of PAHs in crop-land soils were much higher than those in grassland and sparsely-vegetated land soils, likely due to high TOC contents in the cropland soils.
