Abstract:This study investigated the concentration, source, and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in farmland soil and crops around the Urumqi Industrial Park in Xinjiang, China. The total concentration of 16 different PAHs in the soil (Quantity: 51) and crop (Species: onion, cabbage, coriander, beans, spinach, celery, lettuce, and sunflower) samples ranged between 2.32 and 225.11 ng/g and between 132.44 and 504.03 ng/g respectively, with average values of 39.29 ± 2.39 ng/g for the soil samples and 295.81 ± 105.00 ng/g for the crop samples. The source analysis of PAHs was performed using the positive matrix factorization and ratio method and identified the high-temperature combustion of fossil fuels, the volatilization of petroleum, coke oven emissions, and traffic emissions as main sources of PAHs in soil. The ecological risk posed by the PAHs detected in the soil samples was within a safe range. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) value quantifies resulting from human exposure to soil containing PAH is at a safe level except for the potential carcinogenic risk to children due to ingestion exposure (ILCRs > 1.0 × 10 –6 ). The ILCR posed by crops exceed 1.0 × 10 –6 and the risk from sunflower crop was the highest. The highest ILCR values for each crop high exposed for the adult female population. These results indicate that the farmland soil and crops near the Urumqi Industrial Park have been contaminated by PAHs and require urgent remediation to minimize adverse effects of exposure to carcinogens.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread in the environment and pose a serious threat to the soil ecosystem. In order to better understand the health risks for residents exposed to PAH-contaminated soil, 173 surface soil samples were collected in Shanxi Province, China, to detect the levels of 16 priority PAHs. The spatial distribution patterns of PAHs were explored using interpolation and spatial clustering analysis, and the probable sources of soil PAHs were identified for different land-use covers. The results indicate that the soil Σ16 PAH concentration ranged from 22.12 to 1337.82 ng g−1, with a mean of 224.21 ng g−1. The soils were weakly to moderately contaminated by high molecular weight PAHs (3–5 ring) and the Taiyuan–Linfen Basin was the most polluted areas. In addition, the concentration of soil PAHs on construction land was higher than that on other land-use covers. Key sources of soil PAHs were related to industrial activities dominated by coal burning, coking, and heavy traffic. Based on the exposure risk assessment of PAHs, more than 10% of the area was revealed to be likely to suffer from high carcinogenic risks for children. The study maps the high-risk distribution of soil PAHs in Shanxi Province and provides PAH pollution reduction strategies for policy makers to prevent adverse health risks to residents.

Abstract:For studying the level of pollution by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Xinjiang Urumqi petrochemical wastewater irrigation area of farmland soil profiles, 60 soil samples were collected from the wastewater irrigation area and 3 different land-use types (cultivated land, wasteland, and forest land) were included. To investigate the distributions of PAHs in soil, the source analysis is performed using the method of characteristic ratio and the total index method. The results show that the PAHs content in the surface soil of the sewage irrigation area is 237.3–2028.6 µg/kg, with an average value of 911 µg/kg. The PAHs contents in the soil of different land-use types are in the following order: woodland > cultivated land > wasteland. In the soil profile of the polluted irrigated area, 0–40 cm is the main polluted layer, the dominant component being the 2–3-ring PAHs. The monomer concentration and the total PAHs concentration both decrease with increasing soil depth. According to the characteristic ratio and the total index method, the irrigation of petrochemical wastewater is considered the main contributor to PAHs pollution in the soil of different land types in the sewage irrigation area. In addition, there is the problem of automobile exhaust emissions and the influence of incomplete combustion.

Abstract:Public concern about polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is rising due to their potential carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic effects. This study assessed PAHs in Taiyuan City's plain and mountain soil, investigating concentrations, distribution, sources, and carcinogenic risk. Σ21PAHs concentrations in plain topsoil ranged from 133.2 to 6,410.6 ng/g (mean 1,444.7 ng/g), and in mountain soil from 66.5 to 2,250.2 ng/g (mean 585.5 ng/g). Approximately 55.1% of plain and 19.0% of mountain soil samples had contamination levels exceeding 600 ng/g. In plain soil, 4-ring and 5-ring PAHs dominated, while 2-ring and 3-ring PAHs were prevalent in mountain soil. Polluted areas in Taiyuan were primarily centered in the central-north, with higher content closer to industrial or business districts. PAH isomer ratios and principal component analysis/multiple linear regression (PCA/MLR) indicated coal combustion as the main PAH source, followed by coke production, vehicle emissions, and biomass combustion. Incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) showed Taiyuan's PAH-related cancer risks were generally low, though heavily contaminated areas exhibited moderate risks. Plain regions had three times higher cancer risk than mountains, with children facing higher risk than adults. These findings highlight the need to consider PAH pollution while enhancing urban environmental quality.

Abstract:Concentration, composition profile, orientation distribution, sources, and potential risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in 76 surface (0–25 cm) soil samples collected from the Changzhi industrial district in July 2014 using a gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS QP2010 Ultra) system. The composition patterns of the PAHs were dominated by the presence of four-ring PAHs (average 42.9%), followed by three-ring (average 25.9%), five-ring PAHs (average 25.6%), two-ring PAHs (average 5.03%), and lastly, six-ring PAHs (average 0.641%). Source apportionment of the soil PAHs was also performed by the diagnostic ratios, principal component analysis (PCA), and coefficient of divergence (CD) analysis indicated signatures of PAHs sources (including incineration, coal/wood combustion, and vehicular exhaust emission). The total concentration of 16 PAHs (∑16PAHs) found in the roadsides soils (RS) ranged from 2197 to 25,041 μg kg−1, with an arithmetic mean value of 12,245 μg kg−1; followed by the village soils (VS), which ranged from 2059 to 21,240 μg kg−1, with a mean of 8976 μg kg−1; and lastly, the agricultural soils (AS), which ranged from 794 to 16,858 μg kg−1, with a mean of 3456 μg kg−1. According to the numerical effect-based soils quality guidelines of Maliszewska-Kordybach, the levels of PAHs in the sampled industrial areas range from high to heavy contamination. The values of total benzo[a]pyrene toxicity equivalent values (∑Bapeq16PAHs) in the sample areas ranged from 0.087 to 3611 μg kg−1 with an average of 969 μg kg−1. According to the soil quality guidelines of Canada, values found in the highest range (100 μg kg−1), which are equal to those of ∑Bapeq16PAHs found in the industrial area samples, will exert adverse biological effects. The results of this research could potentially be useful for local governments to control toxicity exposure, promote actions to alleviate PAHs contamination, and to manage human health at both work and industrial areas.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a major group of toxic pollutants in urban areas. We calculated the critical concentrations of PAHs in the urban soils of Nanjing, China based on a human health risk assessment. In the study area, the risk was divided into four levels and toxic equivalent values of benzo[a]pyrene (BaPeq) corresponded to <70ngg-1, 70-700ngg-1, 700-7000ngg-1, and >7000ngg-1. By this standard, most urban areas in Nanjing fall under level II (potentially low risk), while older urban districts, commercial centers, and transportation centers exceed the critical concentration (level III) at present. Additionally, the correlations between PAH concentrations, factors associated with urbanization, and soil properties were analyzed. Population density and black carbon content were determined to be the key factors involved. Multiple linear regression models and the scenario simulation method were used to predict PAH levels in urban soils through 2030. The results indicated that the future distribution characteristics of soil BaPeq under various scenarios were different than at present, but PAH concentrations remained stable only under the low‑carbon scenario. Therefore, the consumption of traditional fossil fuels should be controlled and replaced with alternative energy sources. In addition, the growth of traffic land use should be controlled in the southern and southwestern parts of the urban area.
Pollutant source, ecological and human health risks assessment of heavy metals in soils from coal mining areas in Xinjiang, China

Abstract:This study aims to analyze the pollution characteristics and sources of heavy metal elements for the first time in the Zhundong mining area in Xinjiang using the linear regression model. Additionaly, the health risks with their probability and infleuencing factors on different groups of people's were also evaluated using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation approach. The results shows that 89.28% of Hg was from coal combustion, 40.28% of Pb was from transportation, and 19.54% of As was from atmospheric dust. The main source of Cu and Cr was coal dust, Hg has the greatest impact on potential ecological risks. which accounted for 60.2% and 81.46% of the Cu and Cr content in soil, respectively. The all samples taken from Pb have been Extremely polluted (100%). 93.3% samples taken from As have been Extremely polluted. The overall potential ecological risk was moderate. Adults experienced higher non-carcinogenic risks of heavy metals from their diets than children. Interestingly, body weight was the main factor affecting the adult's health risks. This research provides more comprehensive information for better soil management, soil remediation, and soil pollution control in the Xinjiang mining areas.

Abstract:Oases environments in oases to be sensitive to anthropogenic activity because of ecological fragility. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution resulting from anthropogenic activity leads to ecological degradation in oases. To examine the impact of anthropogenic activity on the oasis ecological environment, the present study focused on the spatial distribution and source apportionment of soil PAHs and bacterial community responses in typical oases in Xinjiang, China. The results showed that the soil PAH level were higher in the city centres of Urumqi (9-6340 μg kg-1), Aksu (8-957 μg kg-1) and Korla (8-1103 μg kg-1) and lower in the centres of Hotan city (11-268 μg kg-1) and Qira county (7-163 μg kg-1). Source apportionment suggested that gasoline emissions, diesel emissions, vehicle emissions, coal combustion, coke processing and biomass burning were the sources of soil PAHs. The integrated lifetime cancer risks of soil PAH exceeding the guideline safety values (10-6) recommended by United States Environmental Protection Agency. The ingestion and dermal exposure pathways caused the greatest health risk (contribution ≤82%). Additionally, in the soil with low PAH concentrations, the richness and evenness of the soil bacterial community were great, and the molecular ecological network (MEN) structure was complex. Among populations, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria (relative abundance ≥17%) are the main dominant species in the bacterial communities and the keystone species in the MEN.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) pose risks to environmental and human health. Identification of priority control contaminants is important in guiding the management and control of these synchronous pollutants. A total of 247 soil samples were collected from 64 urban parks in the karst plateau city of Guiyang in SW China to determine the concentrations, spatial distributions, and health risks of PAHs and HMs. The results indicate that dibenz(ah)anthracene and benzo(a)pyrene are the main PAHs species of high ecological risk, and Cr, Mn, and Ni pose elevated ecological risk among the HMs. Four sources were identified for PAHs (biomass burning, coke oven, traffic sources, and coal burning) and HMs (traffic sources, coal burning, industrial sources, and natural sources). The non-carcinogenic risk (NCR) and total carcinogenic risk (TCR) of PAHs were all determined to be negligible and at acceptable levels, several orders of magnitude below those of HMs. The NCR and TCR values of HMs were relatively high, especially for children (11.9% of NCR > 1; 79.1% of TCR > 10 −4 ). Coal burning and natural sources make the greatest contributions to the NCR and TCR values from karst park soils in Guiyang. Considering HMs bioavailability, NCR and TCR values were rather low, due to the high residual HM fractions. Integrated insights into source specific ecological and human health risk indicate future directions for management and control of synchronous PAH and HM pollution, particularly for karst plateau areas.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization in China, soil pollution at contaminated sites has emerged as a significant concern in the environmental protection plan. Moreover, extensive research has focused on the analysis of other major contaminants. However, over the past two decades, only a few studies have systematically analyzed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soils, particularly their source identification, contamination level assessment, and risk evaluation. This study addressed these research gaps by comprehensively evaluating soil PAHs contamination at these sites through the collection and screening of relevant literature data from the past 20 years using a “front page filtering” approach. The results suggested that the most contaminated sites in China were associated with petrochemical plants, steel mills, and coking plants. Coal/biomass burning emerged as the predominant source of PAHs pollution in the soils of contaminated sites across China. Overall, the soils of contaminated sites exhibited relatively low levels of PAHs contamination. The single-factor index method showed that benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) was the PAH monomer with the highest contamination level. Geographically, Northeast and North China exhibited relatively higher contamination levels and ecological risks. Moreover, PAHs posed significant health hazards, as they exhibited significantly high toxic effects on the respiratory system, carcinogenicity, aromatic hydrocarbon receptors, estrogen receptors, and antioxidant response elements. Additionally, children and youths faced higher health risks than adults. The findings from this study provide a solid basis for developing strategies to manage PAHs at contaminated sites in China.

Abstract:This study systematically analyzed the distribution characteristics, sources, and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Kuye River sediments, located in an energy and chemical industry base in northern Shaanxi, China. The results that revealed the concentrations of 16 PAHs in the sediment ranged from 1090.04 to 32,175.68 ng∙g −1 dw, with the four-ring PAHs accounting for the highest proportion. Positive matrix factorization analysis (PMF) revealed the main sources of PAHs as incomplete fossil fuel combustion, biomass combustion, and traffic emissions. The total toxic equivalent concentration of BaP, risk quotient, and lifetime carcinogenic risk of PAHs suggested moderate to high contamination of PAHs in the area. The higher incremental lifetime carcinogenic risk (ILCR) indicated that PAH ingestion was the primary route of impact on public health, with children potentially being more susceptible to PAH exposure. This study can provide valuable theoretical support for implementing pollution prevention measures and ecological restoration strategies for rivers in energy and chemical industry areas.

Abstract:Intensive mining activities in large-scale opencast coal mines have had a significant impact on the local environment. Elements that are potentially harmful to the environment are brought to the surface from deep underground, altering the geochemical conditions for their transport and redistributing them to the surface, causing serious local pollution. However, in-depth studies of toxic metal contamination in soils of arid coal mining areas have not yet received the attention they deserve. Although previous studies have conducted a great deal of research on heavy metal elements in surface coal mine soils, there are few studies related to the more seriously polluted surface coal mines in the arid regions of Northwest China, and there are no in-depth studies on the ecology of soil heavy metal contamination, health risks and source analysis according to the authors' knowledge. To make up for this shortcoming, the present study takes Zn, Cu, Cr, Pb, Hg, and As in the surroundings of the tertiary coal mines in the Hongsachuan Mining Area (northern Xinjiang, China) as an example. The health, ecological risks, and pollution sources of heavy metal elements in surface coal mine soils were comprehensively analyzed. The results showed that the average concentrations of Cr, Hg, and As in the soils of open-pit coal mines greatly exceeded the corresponding provincial background values, with the Cr content exceeding China's soil environmental quality standard I and the As content even higher than standard II (GB15618-1995). Geostatistical and multivariate statistical results showed that the six metals analyzed in this study can be divided into four groups, as follows. Group 1 included Zn and Cu and was mainly controlled by natural sources related to soil parent materials. Group 2 consisted of Cr and Hg and was associated with industrial practices. Group 3 was explained by As and was mainly from coal combustion during the mining activities. Group 4 was Pb and was dominantly from natural sources, together with vehicular emission during the mining activities, indicating a mixed source. Potential ecological risk index (PER) values exhibited low ecological risk in contaminated soils with Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cr, and only 10% of As samples exhibited moderate risks, while 77% of Hg samples posed ecological risks at different level, implying that Hg was the main contributor for comprehensive risk index (RI). Regardless of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risk assessment, As was the primary risk element followed by Cr, and children tended to have a higher health risk than adults. In this paper, statistical methods, pollution assessment methods, and potential ecological risk models are skillfully combined, and relevant conclusions are drawn based on the human and economic geographical background information of the study area. The results can provide references for the investigation and evaluation of soil heavy metals and quantitative analysis of pollution sources in the same type of areas. In order to grasp the pollution level of potential toxic elements in the soil of large open-pit coal mines in arid areas, effective source-cutting measures are taken to provide data support the sustainable management of coal mines and local soil safety utilization measures.

Abstract:To probe into the concentration, composition and other pollution characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the surface sediments of coal mining subsidence water, Yangzhuang coal mining subsidence waters in Panyi Mine of China are determined as the object of this research, where 11 surface sediment samples are collected to detect and analyze PAHs with a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) and make source apportionment with factor analysis and ecological risk assessment. The results show that 16 kinds of PAHs have all been detected, with the content level of Sigma PAHs reaching 55 to 755 ng g(-1) and the average content of that reaching 288 ng g(-1). PAHs with three or four rings dominate. The pollution level of PAHs is quite low and mostly comes from combustion and oil. Most of these 16 kinds of PAHs have been proved to be of no potential ecological risk.

Abstract:China is facing a serious threat PAHs contaminated soil. To better understand the current state of soil PAH pollution in China and contribute to the development of feasible prevention and control measures and policies in the future. This study examines the spatiotemporal distributions of soil Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution in China since 2000, and investigates the key factors influencing changes in levels of soil PAHs. The results of the survey on soil PAHs concentration levels in 716 areas were analyzed by visualization of ArcGIS pro data, correlation analysis and linear regression analysis, it was found that the increase in soil PAH pollution in China is concerning. The analysis indicates significant regional disparities, with pollution levels in the north being higher than in the south. Over the 20-year period, the median level of PAHs in soil increased by 476.8 μg/kg. Construction land areas that heavily rely on fossil fuels and industrial activities exhibit significantly higher concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) compared to other land use types. The study identifies key socio-economic factors linked to rising PAH levels, including energy consumption (notably coal and oil), industrial and domestic waste production. Coal consumption is highlighted as the leading factor in PAH concentration changes in 18 provinces, followed by industrial waste in 6 provinces. Future projections up to 2030 suggest continued influence of these factors on soil PAH levels. The research emphasizes the urgent necessity for comprehensive soil management policies to address the growing PAH pollution, offering insights into its dynamics and contributing factors in China.
Characterization, source apportionment, and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban soils from 23 cities in China

Abstract:AbstractConcentrations, composition profiles, sources, and health risks of 16 USEPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban soils from 23 cities across China based on metadata collected from previous studies between 2005 and 2021 were investigated. ΣPAH concentrations in urban soils from 23 cities across China ranged from 0.1231 to 17.2000 mg/kg (mean = 2.7171 ± 3.8276 mg/kg). Overall PAH contamination in urban soils across China was moderate compared to that in global cities. Based on energy consumption and climate conditions, the spatial distributions of mean ΣPAH concentrations in Northeast China were highest, followed by those in North China, West China, East China, and South China. Individual PAH composition profiles decreased in the order: 4-ring PAHs (41.36%) > 5-ring PAHs (21.77%) > 3-ring PAHs (18.53%) > 6-ring PAHs (14.00%) > 2-ring PAHs (2.27%). Diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization (PMF) revealed that PAHs in urban soils were mainly derived from fossil fuel combustion (from coal, natural gas, and biomass), especially in North, Northeast, and East China, with smaller contributions from petrogenic sources. Health risk assessment results suggest that although there are potential cancer risks from PAHs, risks were acceptable. Toxic equivalent concentration (TEQ) and the corresponding oral cancer slope factor (CFS0) contributed most to the uncertainty of total risks. This study will help develop strategies to reduce PAH risk management in urban soils in China.

Abstract:As an essential energy production base in China, the pollution of PAHs in Xinjiang cannot be ignored. However, this region has limited studies on the overall distribution and transport characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study used a combination of high-altitude background site (MTtian) observations and Community Multiscale Air Quality simulations for systematic investigation. The simulation results revealed that the distribution of PAHs in Xinjiang was high in the north and low in the south, primarily associated with emissions. Moreover, the observed concentration of PAHs in the MTtian was 1.37 ng/m 3 , which lies between the clean and polluted background sites, emphasizing the importance of regional anthropogenic emissions. The observed PAH concentrations at MTtian was 32.2% higher when the air mass was from Urumqi than those at other places. This is related to mountain-valley winds, as shown by the simulations. In addition, the transport of high-altitude PAHs in Xinjiang is primarily affected by westerly winds. This mechanism can explain the highly simulated PAHs at high altitudes in the Tarim Basin. The PAHs emitted from Xinjiang were transported eastward downstream, with Mongolia being the most affected region, contributing to 7.33% of the total PAHs.

Abstract:Soil-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in farmland are critical to human health. The level, composition, source, and cancer risk of sixteen PAHs in agricultural soil from Ningde, China, were investigated. The results indicated that the total concentrations of 16 PAHs ranged from 77.3 to 1188 ng g−1, with a mean value of 406 ng g−1. Five-ring PAHs were found to have the highest concentrations (148 ± 133 ng g−1), followed by four-ring (120 ± 101 ng g−1), three-ring (61.9 ± 54.2 ng g−1), six-ring (44.6 ± 61.0 ng g−1), and two-ring (31.3 ± 31.0 ng g−1). Employing positive matrix factorization (PMF), four PAH sources including biomass burning (36.3%), coal combustion (35.5%), traffic emissions (16.4%), and coke source (11.8%) were identified. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) results showed that ILCR values ranged from 7.1 × 10−4 to 1.1 × 10−3, which will cause moderate-to-high cancer risk to human health mainly via the soil ingestion and dermal contact exposure pathways. The source-oriented results indicated that coal combustion (32.7%), traffic emission (34.3%), and biomass burning (32.4%) had similar contributions to the total cancer risk. Therefore, more attention should be paid to these pyrolysis-originated sources to protect humanity from the health risk of PAHs.

Abstract:The impact of shale gas extraction on surrounding environmental media remains unclear. In this study, the current state of contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are high-frequency contaminants of shale gas, was investigated in the soil surrounding emerging shale gas development sites. The source analysis of PAHs was conducted in the soils of shale gas extraction sites using positive matrix factorization (PMF). The health risk assessment (HRA) was calculated for ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation exposures, and the priority sources of PAHs in the soil were jointly identified by PMF and HRA to refine the contribution level of different individual PAHs to the carcinogenic risk. The results showed that both Sichuan and Chongqing mining site soils were contaminated to different degrees. Shale gas extraction has an impact on the surrounding soil, and the highest contributing source of PAHs in the mining site soil of Sichuan was anthropogenic activity, accounting for 31.6%, whereas that in the mining site soil of Chongqing was biomass combustion and mixed automobile combustion, accounting for 35.9%. At the two mining sites in Sichuan and Chongqing, none of the three exposure pathways (ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation) posed a carcinogenic risk to children, whereas the dermal exposure pathway posed a carcinogenic risk to adults. Health risk assessments based on specific source assignments indicate that when managing soil pollution, the control of fossil fuel combustion and vehicular emissions should be prioritized.

Abstract:Some Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds (PACs) such as nitrated-PAHs (NPAHs), oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs) and methyl-PAHs (MPAHs) have attracted significant concern due to derivatives have greater potential to be more toxic at low environmental concentrations compared to their PPAHs, particularly in petrochemical industrial region and its surrounding areas surface soils in China. Hence, this article provides an insight into the fate, sources, impacts, and relevance to the external environment of PAH-derivatives based on important emissions source. Moreover, prospective health risk due to their exposure has also been discussed. In this study, the concentration (10 –3 ng/g) of Ʃ18PPAHs, Ʃ11MPAHs, Ʃ12NPAHs, and Ʃ4OPAHs in the park were 9.67 ± 1.40, 3.24 ± 0.54, 0.03 ± 0.02 and 0.19 ± 0.65, respectively, which were 4.47, 3.89, 2.04 and 1.17 times than of them surrounding the region. A decreasing trend of the low molecular weight (2-4Rings) contribution to the total amount of PAHs, while the fraction of high molecular weight (5-6Rings) species showed the opposite trend. According to the principal component analysis (PCA) and diagnostic ratios indicated PAHs in the soil samples have mixed sources from industrial activities, solid fuel combustion, and heavy traffic. Despite the high concentrations of MPAHs and OPAHs, the toxicity equivalency quotients (TEQs) of them were not calculated due to the lack of toxic equivalent factors (TEF), thus current studies on PAH and derivatives could have underestimated their exposure risks. The quality and sustainable management of soils are crucial for human health and sustainable development, while there is lack of public awareness of the severe issue of soil pollution. It is recommended to conduct more intensive monitoring and regional assessments in the future.

Abstract:The quality of urban soil is closely related to the safety of public places and the guarantee of food quality. This study investigated the level, distribution, source, and carcinogenic risk of 16 U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban, agricultural, and montane soil in Taiyuan. The ∑16PAHs level varied from 104.78 to 6594.63 ng g−1 with a mean of 922.93 ng g−1, and 47.73% of the soil samples were severely contaminated, with a concentration higher than 600 ng g−1. PAHs with higher molecular weight (≥4 rings) were dominant in PAHs profiles accounting for 80.92%. In the spatial distribution of PAHs, hotspots of ∑16 PAHs were observed near the industries, indicating pollutants emitted by the industries directly affect the surrounding soil quality. The sources identified by positive matrix factorization (PMF) indicated: coal combustion (40.77%), vehicle exhausts (32.94%), biomass combustion (14.89%), and coking source (11.40%). Coal-related sources (coal and coking sources) were the major contributors (52.17%) to PAHs and carcinogenic risk (46.48%) assessed by BaP toxic equivalent concentration in total soils. Therefore, the extensive usage of coal was the leading factor for PAH pollution and health risk in Taiyuan soil.
