Abstract:Formation of mineral scales of carbonate and sulphate poses significant problems in cooling water systems. For the control of calcium carbonate and calcium sulphate scales, a novel environmentally friendly type of scale inhibitor ALn was synthesized. The antiscale property of the ALn copolymer towards CaCO3 and CaSO4 in the artificial cooling water was studied through static scale inhibition tests, The observation shows that both CaCO3 and CaSO4 inhibition increase with increasing the degree of polymerization of ALn from 5 to 15, and the dosage of ALn plays an important role on CaCO3 and CaSO4 inhibition. Abstract:In this study, a novel environmentally friendly copolymer acrylic acid-itaconic acid-allylpolyethoxy maleic carboxylate was synthesized and used for inhibiting the calcium sulfate dehydrate (gypsum) scale. The properties of the synthesized copolymer were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and thermal gravity analysis. Also, the structure and morphology changes of scale crystals were studied by scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction analysis. The copolymer inhibition ability was evaluated by means of static scale inhibition experiments. Results show that the copolymer was effective in inhibiting the scales by changing the size and morphology of the crystals. The maximum inhibition efficiency was 99.8% at a concentration of 2 mg . L-1, far more efficient than most commercial inhibitors.

Abstract:The precipitation of CaCO3 (calcite, vaterite, aragonite and calcium carbonate hydrates) and CaSO4 (calcium sulfate anhydride, calcium sulfate dihydrate and calcium sulfate hemi-hydrates) scale on pipe surfaces widely occurs in numerous industrial processes. For the control of CaCO3 and CaSO4 scales, a novel environmentally friendly scale inhibitor, maleic anhydride (MA)-allypolyethoxy carboxylate (APEM9), was synthesized. MA-APEM9 was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and H-1-NMR. The inhibitor property of the MA-APEM9 copolymer towards CaCO3 and CaSO4 in the artificial cooling water was studied by static scale inhibition tests. The effect on formation of CaCO3 and CaSO4 was investigated with a combination of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The observation showed that MA-APEM9 was a much better inhibitor both for CaCO3 and CaSO4 compared to the commercial inhibitors. An inhibition mechanism is proposed. It shows that the interactions between calcium and allyl-terminated PMA are the fundamental impetus to restrain the formation of the scale in cooling water systems. The MA-APEM9 Inhibitor can be used safely in cooling water systems.

Abstract:A novel non-phosphorous copolymer acrylic acid-allyloxy polyethoxy glutamate (AA-APEU) had been synthesized and developed as an efficient calcium carbonate scale inhibitor for cooling water systems. The structure of the new copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra and H-1 NMR. The inhibition property of the non-phosphorous copolymer toward CaCO3 in the artificial cooling water was studied through static scale inhibition tests. It was found that AA-APEU exhibited excellent ability to control calcium carbonate scale, with approximately 71.8% calcium carbonate inhibition at a level of 8mg/L. The micromorphology and crystal of calcium particles were investigated with a combination of scanning electronic microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction analysis, respectively.

Abstract:Water-soluble monomer APEG-PG-(OH)n were produced and the Structure of APEG-PG-(OH)5 were identified by 1H-NMR. APEG-PG-(OH)n were copolymerized with maleic anhydride (MA) to synthesize no phosphate and nitrogen free calcium carbonate inhibitor MA/APEG-PG-(OH)n. The structure and thermal property of MA/APEG-PG-(OH)5 were characterized and measured by 1H-NMR, GPC and TGA. The observation shows that the dosage and n value of MA/APEG-PG-(OH)n plays an important role on CaCO3 inhibition. MA/APEG-PG-(OH)5 displays superior ability to inhibit the precipitation of calcium carbonate, with approximately 97% inhibition at a level of 8 mg/L. The effect on formation of CaCO3 was investigated with combination of SEM and XRD analysis.

Abstract:The purpose of the paper is to provide a non-phosphorus and nitrogen free calcium phosphate inhibitor maleic anhydride-allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate. The approach is that synthesized monomer allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate from allyloxy polyethoxy ether and chloracetic acid, and then prepared maleic anhydride-allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate by free radical polymerization. Structures of allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate and maleic anhydride-allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate were characterized through FT-IR and H-1-NMR. Influence of monomer mole ratio in maleic anhydride-allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate and viscosity-average molecular weight of maleic anhydricle-allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate on its calcium phosphate inhibition performance was discussed. Calcium tolerance and calcium phosphate inhibition capability of maleic anhydricle-allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate was compared with the latest generation of calcium phosphate inhibitor maleic anhydride-ammonium allylpolyethoxy sulphate, and other two kinds of known inhibitor acrylic acid/2-hydroxypropyl acrylate and acrylic acid/acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid. As a result, monomer mole ratio and viscosity-average molecular weight has great impact on property of maleic anhydricle-allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate. Calcium tolerance and calcium phosphate inhibition of maleic anhydricle-allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate is similar to maleic anhydride-ammonium allylpolyethoxy sulphate. The results reveal that maleic anhydricle-allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate is an excellent green calcium phosphate inhibitor.

Abstract:The precipitation of Ca3(PO4)2 scale on pipe surfaces widely occurs in numerous industrial processes. For the control of Ca3(PO4)2 scales, a novel environmentally friendly type of scale inhibitor Maleic anhydride (MA) - allypolyethoxy carboxylate (APEM) was synthesized. Structures of APEG, APEM, and MA-APEM were identified by FT-IR. MA-APEM possess excellent Ca3(PO4)2 inhibition, approximately 96.7 % at threshold dosage of 6 mg/L, and it also have superior ability to iron (III) dispersion in solutions approximately 24.3 % in the presence of MA-APEM when the dosage exceeds 6 mg/L. Inhibitor of MA-APEM can be used safely in cooling water systems.

Abstract:A novel double-hydrophilic block copolymer, acrylic acid-allylpolyethoxy carboxylate, was specially designed and synthesized from allyloxy polyethoxy ether. The study shows that acrylic acid-allylpolyethoxy carboxylate has significant ability to inhibit the precipitation of calcium carbonate and excellent dispersing capability to stabilize iron (III) in industrial cooling systems. X-ray diffraction shows that there is a number of vaterite crystals in the presence of the phosphorous free and non-nitrogen copolymer; the change of crystal forms was also confirmed by fourier-transform infrared spectra, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:A study was made on the dynamic process of the formation of calcium carbonate scale in circulating cooling water system as well as the effects of scale inhibiters on it, with the scale-inhibiting performance of several organic phosphonate scale inhibitors evaluated. The results of experiment shows that the existence of scale inhibitors gives bigger influence to the scaling process of calcium carbonate, however, different scale inhibitors play leading roles in different dynamic processes.

Abstract:To inhibit calcium carbonate and sulfate scales in cooling water systems, a new antiscalant (acrylic acid-oxalic acid-methallyl methoxy polyethylene glycol, [AA-HPEZ]) was synthesized via radical copolymerization, and the structure of inhibitors was characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, hydrogen Nuclear magnetic resonance, and carbon thirteen Nuclear magnetic resonance. The ability of the polymer to mitigate the calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate scales formation was tested by static scale inhibition methods. The inhibition efficiencies of AA-HPEZ toward CaCO3 and CaSO4 scales were 90.6% and 100%, with 8 and 4 mg/L, respectively. The performance of copolymer on inhibition to CaCO3 and CaSO4 precipitation was better than poly(acrylic acid), poly(epoxysuccinic acid), and hydrolytic poly(maleic anhydride). AA-HPEZ shows great antiscaling properties for CaCO3 scale even for the solution with higher temperature and higher hardness.

Abstract:Allyloxy polyethoxy ether (APEG) and succinic anhydride were used to prepare allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylate (APEL). 8-hydroxy-1,3,6-pyrene trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (PY) was reacted with allyl chloride to produce fluorescent monomer 8-allyloxy-1,3,6-pyrene trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (PA). APEL and PA were copolymerized with acrylic acid (AA) to synthesize PA tagged no phosphate and nitrogen free CaCO3 inhibitor AA-APEL-PA. Structures of PA, APEG, APEL, and AA-APEL-PA were carried out by FT-IR and H-1-NMR. The observation shows that the dosage of AA-APEL-PA plays an important role on CaCO3 inhibition. The effect on formation of CaCO3 was investigated with combination of scanning electronic microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction analysis. Relationship between AA-APEL-PA's fluorescent intensity and its dosage was studied. Correlation coefficient r of AA-APEL-PA's fluorescent intensity and its dosage is 0.9998. AA-APEL-PA can be used to accurately measure polymer consumption on line besides providing excellent CaCO3 inhibition.

Abstract:To inhibit the carbonate and sulfate precipitations of calcium in cooling water systems, a water--soluble copolymer, acrylic acid-oxalic acid-methallyl methoxy polyethylene glycol-8-vinylbenzyloxy-1, 3, 6-pyrene trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (AA-HPEZ-VPTA) was synthesized. Structures of comonomer were carried out by FT-IR and 1H-NMR. The novel inhibitor's ability to control calcium scales was better than current commercial inhibitors (PAA, PESA, HPMA), with about 92.1% for CaCO3 and 98.9% for CaSO4 at levels of 8 and 4 mg/L, respectively. The effect on formation of calcium scales was investigated with combination of scanning electronic microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction analysis. The correlation coefficient r of inhibitor's is 0.9971. AA-HPEZ-VPTA can be used as an effective fluorescent- tagged scales inhibitor for cooling water systems.
Design of Molecular Scale Inhibitors for High Temperature Industrial Cooling Water Systems Based on Group Synergistic Effects

Abstract:In high-temperature industrial circulating cooling water systems, the pursuit of environmentally friendly and efficient scale inhibitors is crucial. This study introduced a novel series of monomers with exceptional scale inhibition properties, designed and optimized using Density Functional Theory (DFT). An in-depth analysis of rho and del(2)rho at critical points in the electrostatic potential distribution was conducted through the Atoms in Molecules (AIM) approach. Fukui Function analysis was also employed during the thorough screening of optimal molecular pairs. The result of this study is the development of a new ternary scale inhibitor, MA-IA-VS, which not only demonstrates a strong affinity and high binding energy but also exceptional dispersibility and biodegradability, aligning with the principles of green chemistry. Experimental data indicates that MA-IA-VS effectively inhibits over 99 % of CaCO3 and CaSO4 scales at minimal dosages (30 mgL-1 and 7 mgL-1, respectively), yielding substantial environmental and economic benefits. Furthermore, the interaction mechanism between MA-IA-VS and scaling crystals were elucidated through molecular dynamics simulations and mechanistic studies, revealing that MA-IA-VS forms a protective layer on the surface of Fe (1 1 0). Additionally, the adsorption of MA-IA-VS prevents calcium scale from adhering to the metal surface and alters its concentration distribution in solution, thus realizing scale inhibition effect. This contributes to a deeper understanding of scale inhibitor mechanisms and establishes a robust theoretical and practical foundation for the design of novel, eco-efficient scale inhibitors.
