Abstract:The paper experimentally investigates the effects of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening arrangements on the failure mechanisms of CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams without stirrups under impact loading, as well as the fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) contribution to shear strength. Five beams were tested under static loads and 10 beams under impact loads. The failure modes and the shear mechanism of CFRP-strengthened RC beams under impact loading were obtained. The failure process can be divided into two stages: the shear failure of the local part of the beams adjacent to the midspan section under impact loading; and the subsequent shear failure of the near-support section under reaction force. The test results showed that the arrangement and amount of CFRP as well as impact energy played an important role in the beam dynamic behavior: The CFRP contribution to shear strength at the first stage was discussed and verified by the experimental shear strength considering the strain rate and stress wave propagation effects. A dynamic failure criterion of RC beams was eventually proposed to assess the failure of FRP-strengthened RC beams under impact loading.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams shear-strengthened with externally bonded carbon fiber-rein forced polymer (CFRP) wraps under low-velocity impact loading was experimentally investigated. Twelve simply supported RC beam specimens classified into two groups according to stirrup ratios of 0 and 0.1% were tested using an instrumented drop-weight impact machine. The main variable was the center-to-center spacing of the CFRP wraps, which was retrofit at three levels from light, to critical, and to heavy strengthening. The dynamic responses of all the specimens are monied and discussed in detail. Effects of the CFRP strip spacing and shear span-depth ratio on dynamic response of beam specimens are analyzed.

Abstract:In order to further study the anti-impact behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthend with externally bonded FRP sheets,a RC beam without stirrups and two FRP-strengthened RC beams without stirrups were tested under impact loads and a FRP-strengthened beam was tested under static loads.Test results showed that the antiimpact capacity of FRP-strengthened RC beams significantly increases,especially,when they are strengthened with end anchoraged.Time-histories of impact force,mid-span displacement and strain of longitudinal reinforcement were analyzed,combined with failure modes of specimens,the anti-shear failure mechanism of CFRP-strengthened RC beams without stirrups under impact loading was obtained.It was shown that the failure process is divided into two stages including the shear failure of local part of the beams' mid-span under impact loading,and the subsequent shear failure of the impacted point directing to bearings.The FRP contributions to the beams' shear force-bearings in the two stages were discussed under impact loadin.g,respectively and compared with the theoretical shear force-bearings gained with different design codes.The comparison showed that the FRP-strengthened RC beams' dynamic shear force-bearings under impact loading in both stages are higher than the theoretical values and their shear force-bearings under static loads.Compared with the previous methods to estimate the shear force-bearings of CFRP-to-concrete interfaces under impact loading,the test results provided a reference for reasonably evaluating FRP contributions to FRP-strengthened RC beams' shear strength.

Abstract:The main goal of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of seismic retrofit using CFRP wrapping in reducing the damage and preventing the failure of RC bridge piers under vehicular impacts. This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation on the performance of cantilever CFRP-wrapped circular RC columns under lateral low-velocity impact. To this aim, a total of nine 1/3-scale cantilever columns without axial load, comprising three types of shear-deficient RC columns with different reinforcement layout, were tested in a horizontal collision facility at two different impact velocities. The columns were tested in plain configuration (0 plies) and two wrapped configurations with 2 and 4 plies of CFRP. Generally, for plain columns, brittle shear-type damage was observed. Larger damage was obtained by increasing the impact velocity and decreasing the amount of transverse reinforcements while the variation of the amount of longitudinal steel bars has a negligible effect. The experimental results demonstrate that seismic retrofit using CFRP can provide an effective solution to convert the failure mechanism under lateral impact loading, from shear- to flexural-dominated, with a reduction of the impact damage. This strategy has a beneficial effect given sufficient bending capacity of the plain RC column.
Investigation on Flexural Performance of RC Beams Flexurally Strengthened by Side-bonded CFRP Laminates

Abstract:It is an effective way to improve the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members by externally bonded carbon fiber reinforcement polymer (CFRP) laminates on the soffit of the members. However, there is little investigation on flexural performance of RC beam flexurally strengthened by side-bonded FRP laminates. To investigate the flexural behavior of RC beams side-bonded CFRP laminates and the difference of RC beams strengthened by soffit-bonded and side-bonded CFRP laminates, a total of 8 CFRP-strengthened beams and 1 control beam were tested. The experimental results show that: 1) the first crack loads of RC beams strengthened by side-bonded CFRP laminates are much higher than that of RC beams strengthened by soffit-bonded CFRP laminates. The first crack loads of side-bonded CFRP laminates beams improved significantly; 2) Side-bonded and soffit-bonded CFRP laminates have almost the same effect on the flexural stiffness of RC beams strengthened with same quantity of CFRP laminates before tension rebar yielding. However, side-bonded CFRP laminates can affect crack width and crack pattern of the strengthened beams, and the pre-crack stage of RC beam by sidebonded CFRP laminates extended remarkably. 3) different to soffit-bonded CFRP laminates RC beams, side-bonded CFRP laminates cannot improve the first yielding and the ultimate load bearing capacity of RC beams.

Abstract:Concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) structures are widely used in various types of buildings and bridges. Confined concrete tube (CCFT) is a new type of structural column originally proposed in previous work. This paper reports the impact testing results of the CFT and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) confined CFT stub columns under different impacting energy levels, conducted using a large-capacity drop-hammer machine. The time history curves of impacting force and deformation time history curves as well as failure patterns are investigated. The results indicate that the failure patterns are related to the impact energy. Increasing the thickness of the steel tube and providing additional transverse confinement by CFRP can enhance the impact-resistant behavior. Finally, the dynamic analysis software ANSYS/LS-DYNA is used to simulate the impact behaviors of the CFT and CCFT specimens, and the simulation results are reasonable compared with the test results. Effect of sustaining load level on flexural behavior of RC beams retrofitted with CFRP sheets

Abstract:The research reported in this paper is to investigate the effects of externally bonded CFRP sheets on flexural performance of beams subjected to different levels of sustaining load. To this end, a series of 16-RC beams retrofitted with CFRP sheets and 2 control beams were tested, and the theoretical analysis was conducted to explain the experimental phenomena and test results. The experimental parameters include rebar ratio, number of plies of CFRP laminates and sustaining load level at the time of retrofitting. This paper presents a detailed analysis on the sustaining load levels that may have significant influence on the flexural behavior of the strengthened RC beams. Both the experimental and analytical results indicated that the stiffness of all the strengthened beams had been increased evidently as compared to that of the control beams. This phenomenon implies that FRP played an important role to increase the stiffness, thus reduce the deflections of the strengthened beams. The sustaining loads have an obvious effect on the stiffness of the strengthened beams, especially on the average tangent stiffness at post-cracking stage. The experimental and analytical results in this paper are novel, and the findings may be considered for possible adoption into the design codes, also for practical engineering applications.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) sheets on the flexural performance of the beams strengthened at different levels of sustaining load, test of 16 RC beams retrofitted with CFRP sheets and 2 control beams was carried out. The bearing capacity and stiffness of the beams were analyzed in detail. The parameters of the test include the reinforcement ratio, quantities of CFRP sheets, and sustaining load level at the time of strengthening. The experimental and analytical results led to the conclusions summarized as follows: 1) the stiffness of cracked beams retrofitted with CFRP sheets is greater than that of the control beams. 2) the yielding load and ultimate bearing capacity of the beams are not affected by the value of the sustaining load at that load RC beams retrofitted with CFRP sheets, but affect the stiffness of the beams, especially the average tangent stiffness after rebar yielding. The experimental and analytical results are valuable for authorizing codes and for practical engineering.

Abstract:Eighteen reinforced concrete beams, including 16 beams strengthened with CFRP laminate at different levels of preload and 2 control beams, were tested to investigate the influence of preload level on flexural behavior of CFRP-strengthened RC beam. The experimental parameters include rebar ratios, number of plies of CFRP laminates and preload level at the time of strengthening. Theoretical analysis was also carried out to explain the experimental phenomena and results. The experimental and theoretical results indicated that the preload level has more influence on the stiffness and deflection of the strengthened beam, both at post-cracking and post-yielding stage, than that on the yielding and ultimate flexural strength of the strengthened beam. The main failure mode of CFRP-strengthened beam is the intermediate crack-induced debonding of CFRP laminates, provided that the development length of CFRP laminates and shear capacity of the beam are sufficient.

Abstract:This study presents an experimental investigation on shear performance of strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams with hybrid bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips. Six RC T-beams were prepared including a reference beam, a beam strengthened with externally bonding (EB) method, and four beams strengthened with hybrid bonding (HB) method. Different spacings between steel plate and initial damage of beam were also considered in the test. Failure modes, cracking process, load–deflection curves, and strain development of beam components were discussed in detail. Test results showed that ultimate shear capacity and ductility of RC beams are both improved by HB method and fasteners effectively prevent the FRP debonding failure before shear failure of RC beams. Fasteners changed the propagation path of the critical diagonal cracks which extended towards the steel plate instead of hinge support. Maximum strain of CFRP strip using HB method, which is over 45% of its ultimate tensile strain, is more than twice that using EB method. Modified theoretical models were finally employed to evaluate the shear strength of RC beams increased by HB method. The comparison of theoretical and test results showed that predicted range of load increment agrees well with the test results.

Abstract:It is well‐known that shear failure is a collapse mechanism that is the riskiest, fastest, and catastrophic and occurs with no visible signs of damage or prior warning for RC beams. Therefore, to prevent brittle shear failure, the RC beams should include sufficient shear reinforcement, such as stirrups, and be designed to have sufficient shear capacity. However, the RC beams' shear capacity becomes inadequate for various reasons. One of these reasons may be the acting of the impulsive impact load, which is uncommon and disregarded in the design phase on the RC beams. An experimental program was conducted to examine the impact behavior and failure mode of shear‐deficient RC beams in the scope of the present study. Besides, it aims to investigate the effectiveness of the strengthening method using CFRP strips in improving the general behavior, failure mode, and performance of shear‐deficient RC beams exposed to impact load. The time histories of the accelerations, displacements, impact loads, and strains in the CFRP strips were measured. They were interpreted how they are affected by experimental variables examined in the experimental study. Furthermore, the finite element model of the specimens was generated in the LS‐DYNA software, and the experimental and numerical results were compared by performing finite element analysis in terms of failure modes and general behavior.

Abstract:Five beams were tested up to failure to study the shear behavior of concrete beams prestressed with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP). Different factors were taken into consideration: the type of prestressing tendons and the shear span ratio. The shear failure modes and the influence of different factors on shear behavior were investigated in details. The test results showed that FRP prestressed beams without stirrups had two shear failure modes: diagonal compression failure and shear compression failure; the shear span ratio was the most important factor to determine the failure mode and shear capacity of the prestressed beams. The shear capacity of concrete members prestressed with FRP tendons was lower than that of concrete beams prestressed with steel cables.

Abstract:AbstractThis paper presents an experimental study on the shear behavior of RC members fully wrapped with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, which are a new type of FRP material characterized by a much larger rupture strain (LRS) compared with conventional FRPs (i.e., made of carbon, glass, and aramid fibers). A total of 10 PET fully-wrapped RC beams, which were designed to fail in shear and with different shear-span to effective-depth ratios, transverse reinforcement ratios and shear strengthening ratios, were tested under 4-point bending loads. The overall load-deflection responses and the shear deformation of the beams as well as the strain development of the transverse steel reinforcement and the FRP jackets were carefully observed. Abstract:As the main horizontal load-bearing member, the research on the impact resistance of reinforced concrete beams is an important part of the design of building structures against strong dynamic loads. Therefore, impact-resistant design is critical to the safety and maintainability of such structures. However, the impact performance of RC beams has not been well understood, and the methods of strengthening RC structures to resist impact loads are still very limited. In this study, experimental tests and numerical simulations were carried out to study the performance of RC beams with or without FRP reinforcement under impact loads. In order to study the dynamic performance of reinforced concrete beams before and after CFRP reinforcement under different impact conditions, the finite element analysis software ANSYS/LSDYNA was used to simulate the impact test of five ordinary RC beams and five strengthened beams. The impact speed and impact weight of the drop hammer are mainly changed during the simulation, and the stress distribution, crack development and failure morphology, and CFRP resistance contribution of the specimen were analyzed. The simulation results show that CFRP can alleviate the high stress in the impact transient concrete, reduce the deformation of the beam body, limit the crack development, and provide a certain impact resistance. The increase of the impact height has a more significant effect on the transient response of the component. CFRP can effectively restrain the deformation under different impact weight conditions. Therefore, strengthening RC beams with CFRP is an effective method to improve the impact load resistance.

Abstract:In this paper, impact behaviors of reinforced concrete (RC) beam and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) strengthen RC beam (CFRP-RC beam), including the damage process, failure pattern, impact force peak value and peak deflection were investigated by means of using three-point bending tests with a drop-hammer impact device. A high-speed camera combined with digital image correlation (DIC) method was used to capture the initiation and propagation process of impact multiple-cracks and to record the cracking strain. The results showed that the changes of hammer impact height and bonded CFRP on beams had different effects on dynamic response of beams, and they also caused change of failure pattern of beams. Introduce of CFRP can significantly reduce the crack widths and mid-span deflections of beams and improve the impact resistance of beams. In addition, the crack velocity in RC beam was inhibited effectively by CFRP, however, the inhibitory effect declined as impact velocity increased.

Abstract:To develop feasible carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) retrofit schemes for the shear strengthening of real three-dimensional reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column joints, a series of parameters in relation to the contributions of the CFRP sheets externally bonded to joint panels was numerically investigated in this study. The parameters include CFRP reinforcement ratio, CFRP layout, transverse beam-to-joint panel width ratio, transverse beam-to-joint panel height ratio, location of transverse beam, and number of transverse beams. Strengthening efficiency, a new dimensionless index, was introduced to evaluate the residual effect of a CFRP-strengthening system weakened by the presence of transverse beams in comparison with the increase in joint shear capacity in relation to the one-way counterpart. The results obtained from 44 nonlinear finite element models, which were calibrated against experimental observations, confirmed the effectiveness of the CFRP strengthening technique with regard to the relatively wide ranges of the parameters. The significant differences among the roles of the parameters were revealed, and the reasons behind the differences were analyzed. Furthermore, the shear mechanism of the CFRP-retrofitted joint panels was discussed with the proposed strut-and-tie model.

Abstract:With the increasing utilization of reinforced concrete (RC) beams in eco‐friendly and fast‐paced construction practices, evaluating their impact performance becomes imperative. These beams are susceptible to unforeseen impact loads resulting from accidents or terrorist incidents throughout their service lifespan. Five groups of RC beams, each subjected to different curing periods, stirrup reinforcement, and drop hammer heights, were fabricated. Among these groups, one underwent static load testing, while the remaining groups were subjected to impact load testing utilizing the drop hammer test system. The failure modes, static response, dynamic response, and energy dissipation of RC beams were analyzed. Static tests revealed that RC beams exhibited a flexure‐governed failure mode with top surface concrete crushing, aligning with expectations. With increased stirrup reinforcement ratios, shear and flexural‐shear cracks during impact tests decreased, with high impact loads causing diagonal shear failure, severe concrete crushing, additional diagonal shear cracks, and a broader crack distribution. Higher drop hammer heights were found to increase overall energy dissipation, whereas increased stirrup reinforcement ratios resulted in moderate decrease. Specifically, the overall energy dissipation increased with higher drop hammer heights. Conversely, an increase in the stirrup reinforcement ratio was linked to a certain degree of decrease in overall energy dissipation.

Abstract:The steel-wire-carbon-fiber-reinforced plate (SCFR plate) is a relatively new strengthening technology for concrete structures. In this paper, a series of lateral impact tests on SCFR plates and conventional carbon-fiber-reinforced plates (CFR plates) were first performed, followed by tensile tests of both the SCFR plates and the CFR plates. It is found that the SCFR plates can provide the same level of tensile strength as CFR plates, whilst having evident advantages in terms of better ductility and lateral resistance. It is also found that increasing the amount of the steel wire can improve the lateral resistance of the SCFR plate. In addition, the SCFR plate shows the advantage of a reduction in lateral damage, which is commonly experienced by CFR plates during transportation, construction, and maintenance. In the second stage of the research, flexural tests of both SCFR and CFR plate-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams were performed. The failure modes and crack patterns of the RC beams were investigated. Results show that the SCFR plate-strengthened beam exhibits enhanced ductility compared to that strengthened by traditional CFR plates, thereby enhancing the flexural capacity of the RC beams. On the basis of the test results, a formula is designed to predict the flexural capacity of SCFR plates; good agreement is achieved.

Abstract:The shear behavior of simply supported RC beams strengthened with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) was studied in this paper. The test variables include strengthening schemes (i.e., U-wrapping and full-wrapping) and FRP reinforcement ratios. A comprehensive and meticulous investigation was conducted on the failure mode of RC beams, shear force-deflection curves, the development process of shear cracks, the evolution of FRP strain, and the interaction between FRP and concrete. The shear capacity and deformation were increased by 42.5–123.2% and −16.34–96.89% using the fully wrapped scheme, respectively. The improvement in shear capacity was 42.5–72.55% when the U-wrapped scheme was adopted. The PET FRP fully wrapped beams exhibited a type of ductile shear failure. The strain of PET FRP in the fully wrapped specimen exceeded 4% without fracture, ensuring the deformation capacity after the peak load. The shear deformation caused the increase in post-peak mid-span deflection. The U-wrapped specimens showed debonding failure, with the debonding strain of PET FRP being more than that of conventional FRP. Finally, six design guidelines for PET FRP shear contribution were evaluated for both U-wrapped and fully wrapped schemes.

Load-Bearing Performance of Non-Prismatic RC Beams Wrapped with Carbon FRP Composites

Abstract:This study investigated the influence of CFRP composite wrapping techniques on the load–deflection and strain relationships of non-prismatic RC beams. A total of twelve non-prismatic beams with and without openings were tested in the present study. The length of the non-prismatic section was also varied to assess the effect on the behavior and load capacity of non-prismatic beams. The strengthening of beams was performed by using carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites in the form of individual strips or full wraps. The linear variable differential transducers and strain gauges were installed at the steel bars to observe the load–deflection and strain responses of non-prismatic RC beams, respectively. The cracking behavior of unstrengthened beams was accompanied by excessive flexural and shear cracks. The influence of CFRP strips and full wraps was primarily observed in solid section beams without shear cracks, resulting in enhanced performance. In contrast, hollow section strengthened beams exhibited minor shear cracks alongside the primary flexural cracks within the constant moment region. The absence of shear cracks was reflected in the load–deflection curves of strengthened beams, which demonstrated a ductile behavior. The strengthened beams demonstrated 40% to 70% higher peak loads than control beams, whereas the ultimate deflection was increased up to 524.87% compared to that of the control beams. The improvement in the peak load was more prominent as the length of the non-prismatic section increased. A better improvement in ductility was achieved for the case of CFRP strips in the case of short non-prismatic lengths, whereas the efficiency of CFRP strips was reduced as the length of the non-prismatic section increased. Moreover, the load–strain capacity of CFRP-strengthened non-prismatic RC beams was higher than the control beams.
