Abstract:The atom-economical alkyne polyhydrothiolations of aromatic diynes (1) and dithiol (2) catalyzed by rhodium complexes proceed smoothly under mild conditions at room temperature in a regioselective manner, producing sole anti-Markovnikov products of poly(vinylene sulfide)s (3) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 31500) and stereoregularities (E content up to 100%) in high yields (up to 95.2%). The stereostructures of the polymers are readily tuned by engineering control on the sequential addition of monomers during the polymerization process and postmanipulation by light irradiation. All the poly(vinylene sulfide)s are soluble in common organic solvents and exhibit good film-forming ability and high optical transparency. The functional pendants in 1 have endowed 3 with novel properties such as aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics, optical limiting to harsh laser pulses, and ceramization capability to semiconducting nanoparticles. The polymers are thermal and UV curable, enabling the fabrication of fluorescent photopatterns. Their thin films show high refractive indices (n(D) = 1.75-1.70) and low optical dispersions (down to 0.006) at telecom important wavelengths. Their refractive indices vary with their stereostructures and can be modulated by UV irradiation.

Abstract:This paper proposes a method that can be used to synthesize carbon microspheres with controllable sizes, rich amino groups and oxygen-containing groups. The synthesized materials are portrayed by various methods including SEM, FT-IR, XRD, and EDX. The resulting carbon spheres presented an amorphous characteristic, which displayed a broad range in diameter, high degree of sphericity, and smoothness with amino groups and oxygen-containing groups. Pyknotic and smooth silver shells were deposited on carbon spheres by electroless silver plating. Moreover, it could directly reduce Ag+ to Ag in aqueous silver nitrate. These materials can potentially be used as adsorbents for heavy-metal removal from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:AbstractPorous organic polymers allow the integration of various π‐units into robust porous π‐networks, but they are usually synthesized as unprocessable solids with poor light‐emitting performance as a result of aggregation‐related excitation dissipation. Herein, we report a general strategy for the synthesis of highly emissive photofunctional porous polymer films on the basis of a complementary scheme for the structural design of aggregation‐induced‐emissive π‐systems. We developed a high‐throughput and facile method for the direct synthesis of large‐area porous thin films at the liquid–electrode interface. The approach enables the preparation of microporous films within only a few seconds or minutes and allows precise control over their thickness with sub‐nanometer precision. By virtue of rapid photoinduced electron transfer, the thin films can detect explosives with enhanced sensitivity to low parts‐per‐million levels in a selective manner.
Synthesis and thermal characterization of porous polymeric microspheres functionalized with thiol groups

Abstract:The paper presents a method of the preparation and functionalization of polymer microspheres consisting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and crosslinking agents: 1,4-dimethacryloyloxybenzene (1,4DMB) and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TRIM). Poly(GMA- co -1,4DMB) and poly(GMA- co -TRIM) microspheres were obtained by seed swelling polymerization. To introduce thiol groups into the microspheres structure, the reaction with thiocarboxylic acids was performed. The chemical structure of parent and modified microspheres was confirmed by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. Elemental composition of microspheres after functionalization was determined by elemental analysis. The analysis showed the percentage of sulfur in the range of 2.78–4.51%, which corresponds to a concentration of thiol group in the range of 0.87–1.41 mmol g −1 . Additionally, the porous structure of the copolymers was investigated using the low-temperature nitrogen adsorption–desorption method. The starting microspheres are characterized by a specific surface in the range of 150–160 m 2 g −1 , whereas functionalized copolymers indicate slightly lower surface area, of about 130 m 2 g −1 . The thermal stability of the materials was determined by the method of differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The course of the thermal degradation under oxidative conditions of modified microspheres is different from the starting copolymers. The functionalized microspheres showed much higher thermal stability (approximately 270 °C) compared to the starting microspheres (230–250 °C).

Abstract:A new synthetic route leading to functional polyphosphazene cyclomatrix microsphere has been developed via thiol-ene click modification. Hexacholorocyclophosphazene (HCCP) was crosslinked with both bisphenol-S and 4,4 '-dially1 bisphenol-S to obtain vinyl polyphosphazene microspheres (VPZM) in order to ensure high crosslinking degree and introduce vinyl moieties. Compared to the microspheres obtained by HCCP and bisphenol-S, the size of VPZM was broadly dispersed from 400 nm to 1.40 mu m. Thiol-ene click reactions were carried out to attach functional groups, such as glucosyl, carboxyl, ester and dodecyl groups onto polyphosphazene microspheres, which demonstrated no change in morphology and size after modification. Solid state NMR (SSNMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectoscopy (FT-IR) results showed that the vinyl moieties were introduced in the period of crosslinking and functionalization was also successful via click reactions. Moreover, the microspheres presented a little difference in thermal properties after modification. Concanavalin A (Con-A) fluorescent adsorption was also observed for glucosyl microspheres. Thus, the thiol-ene modified polyphosphazene microspheres displayed chemical flexibility in post-functionalization. Abstract:Polysilsesquioxane (PSQ) microspheres have shown promise in many fields, but previous studies about porous PSQ microspheres are scarce. Herein, we fabricated novel micron-sized thiol-functional polysilsesquioxane (TMPSQ) microspheres with open and interconnected macropores by combining inverse suspension polymerization with two-step solâ€“gel and polymerization-induced phase separation processes, without using phase-separation-promoting additives or sacrificial templates. The chemical composition of the TMPSQ microspheres was confirmed using FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The morphology of the TMPSQ microspheres was characterized using SEM and TEM. TGA was employed to test the thermal stability of the TMPSQ microspheres. Mercury intrusion porosimetry and nitrogen adsorptionâ€“desorption tests were performed to investigate the pore structure of the TMPSQ microspheres. The results showed that the TMPSQ microspheres had open and interconnected macropores with a pore size of 839 nm, and the total porosity and intraparticle porosity reached 70.54% and 43.21%, respectively. The mechanism of porous generation was proposed based on the morphological evolution observed using optical microscopy. The macropores were formed through the following four steps: phase separation (spinodal decomposition), coarsening, gelation, and evaporation of the solvent. The macropores can facilitate the rapid mass transfer between the outer and inner spaces of the TMPSQ microspheres. The TMPSQ microspheres are promising in various fields, such as catalyst supports and adsorbents.

Abstract:A one-step swelling and polymerization technique was used in the synthesis of porous glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) monodisperse polymeric microspheres. The polystyrene (PS) seed obtained in the dispersion polymerization was used as a shape template. The presence of epoxide rings in the chemical structure of microspheres enables their post-polymerization chemical modifications involving: the Diels-Alder reaction with sodium cyclopentadienide and maleic anhydride, the reaction with 4,4′-(bismaleimido)diphenylmethane, and the thiol-Michael reaction with methacryloyl chloride and 2-mercaptopropionic acid. Changing the reaction mixture composition—the amounts of crosslinking monomer and PS seed as well as the type and concentration of porogen porous microspheres of different porous structures were obtained. Their porous structures were characterized in the dry and swollen states. The copolymers obtained from the equimolar monomers mixture modified in the above way were applied as the column packing materials and tested in the reverse-phase HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography). A few factors influencing morphology and porous structure of microspheres were studied.

Abstract:Control of the porous structure and particle size is essential for improving the properties of polysilsesquioxane (PSQ) microspheres. Herein, using the strategy combining inverse suspension polymerization, two-step sol–gel- and polymerization-induced phase separation processes, micron-sized thiol-containing macroporous PSQ (TMPSQ) microspheres with controllable morphologies, adjustable particle diameters (4.9–17.3 μm), and pore sizes (40–3774 nm) were prepared. The morphology and size of the TMPSQ microspheres were characterized by SEM. The mercury intrusion method was employed to analyze the porous structure of the microspheres. The effects of the composition of the sol–gel disperse phase, the mass ratio of the sol–gel disperse phase to the oil continuous phase (WRW/O), and the Span 80 mass content in the oil continuous phase on the morphology, particle diameter and pore size of the TMPSQ microspheres were investigated. Results indicated that the composition of the sol–gel disperse phase determines the morphology and porous structure of the microspheres, and WRW/O and Span 80 content have remarkable impacts on the morphology and particle size of the microspheres. This study is beneficial to the design and fabrication of functional PSQ microspheres with desired properties and promising application prospects.

Abstract:Functionalized PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles bearing sulfonic groups on the surface were successfully synthesized via emulsion copolymerization using a polymerizable emulsifier a olefin solfonate (AOS). As demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, well-defined core-shell PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles with a diameter of 50 nm were obtained. Sulfonic groups introduced onto the surface of the composite nanoparticles were quantified by FTIR, and can be controlled to some extent via a two-stage procedure.

Abstract:It has been a challenge to synthesize thiol-functionalized polyacetylenes because of the poisoning effect of mercapto group on the early transition-metal catalysts. Rhodium complexes such as [Rh(cod)Cl](2) can catalyze the polymerizations but the products are insoluble and intractable. In this work, we tackled this challenge. Sulfur-containing polyacetylenes with macroscopic processability were successfully synthesized by separating thiol pendant from polyene backbone with a flexible spacer (in PI), capping free mercapto group with acetyl or alkyl group (in P2 or P3), and using a zwitterionic complex Rh+[eta(6)-C6H5(nbd)B-(C6H5)(3)] as catalyst. The soluble polymers were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, PL, and TGA analyses. Due to the specific interactions between thiol group and zinc cation, ZnO nanoparticles were chemisorbed onto the surfaces of polymer films, as verified by AFM analysis. Polymer P2 and ZnO nanoparticles could be readily hybridized by simply mixing the two components in an organic solvent such as chloroform, THF, or DMF. SEM images revealed that the morphology of the film cast from the solution of the P2/ZnO hybrid was dominated by well-dispersed nanoparticles and smooth surface.

Abstract:Efficient synthesis of poly(enamine)s has been a great challenge because of their poor stability, poor solubility, and low molecular weights. In this work, a spontaneous amino-yne click polymerization for the efficient preparation of poly(enamine)s was established, which could proceed with 100% atom efficiency under very mild conditions without any external catalyst. Through systematic optimization of the reaction conditions, several soluble and thermally stable poly(β-aminoacrylate)s with high molecular weights (Mw up to 64400) and well-defined structures were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99%). Moreover, the polymerization can perform in a regio- and stereospecific fashion. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra analysis revealed that solely anti-Markovnikov additive products with 100% E-isomer were obtained. The reaction mechanism was well demonstrated with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. In addition, by introducing the tetraphenylethene moiety, the resulting polymers exhibit unique aggregation-induced emission characteristics and could be applied in explosives detection and bioimaging. This polyhydroamination is a new type of click polymerization and opens up enormous opportunities for preparing functional polymeric materials.

Abstract:The process of suspension polymerization was utilized to create acrylate resin microspheres with mesh numbers of 140–200 μm and particle sizes of 100 μm for implementation in mesh coating technology. The copolymer of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methyl acrylate (MA) served as the primary polymer, with dibenzoyl peroxide (DBPO) functioning as the initiator, and a mixture of calcium carbonate and deionized water served as the dispersion medium. The surface morphology of the synthesized microspheres was analyzed through Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to confirm successful synthesis. The optimal reaction conditions for the synthesis of these microspheres were determined to be a dispersant dosage of 30 g of calcium carbonate with a monomer ratio of 4:1, a reaction time of 1 h, an initiator dosage of 1.2 g of BPO, and a reaction temperature of approximately 75–80 C, resulting in microspheres with a regular spherical shape and smooth surface.

Abstract:Polymer porous microspheres with large specific surface areas and good fluidity have promising important applications in the biomedical field. However, controllable fabrication of porous microspheres with precise size, morphology, and pore structure is still a challenge, and phase separation caused by the instability of the emulsion is the main factor affecting the precise preparation of porous microspheres. Herein, a method combining the iso-density emulsion (IDE) template and microfluidics was proposed to realize the controllable preparation of polymer porous microspheres. The IDE exhibited excellent stability with minimal phase separation within 4 h, thus showing potential advantages in the large-scale preparation of porous microspheres. With the IDE template combined microfluidics technique and the use of a customized amphoteric copolymer, PEG-b-polycaprolactone, polycaprolactone (PCL) porous microspheres with porosity higher than 90% were successfully prepared. Afterwards, the main factors, including polymer concentration, water–oil ratio and homogenization time were investigated to regulate the pore structure of microspheres, and microspheres with different pore sizes (1–30 μm) were obtained. PCL porous microspheres exhibited comparable cell viability relative to the control group and good potential as cell microcarriers after surface modification with polydopamine. The modified PCL porous microspheres implanted subcutaneously in rats underwent rapid in vivo degradation and tissue ingrowth. Overall, this study demonstrated an efficient strategy for the precise preparation of porous microspheres and investigated the potential of the as-prepared PCL porous microspheres as cell microcarriers and micro-scaffolds.

Abstract:Simultaneous achievement in high solid content and high microsphere yield is deemed a challenge in the fabrication of monodisperse microspheres by precipitation polymerization. We herein demonstrate that micro-sized monodisperse poly(methacrylic monomer-divinylbenzene) microspheres containing epoxy, lauyl, carboxyl and hydroxyl functions can be fabricated by solvothermal precipitation co-polymerization at 20 wt% monomer loading with over 94% microsphere yield. The morphology and porosity of the obtained particles can be readily tuned by cosolvent-acetonitrile binary solvents. Addition of a small amount of cosolvent that has similar solubility parameter to that of the functional monomer can significantly improve the monodispersity of the obtained microspheres. When tetrahydrofuran was used as the co-solvent, the surface area of the highly porous microspheres achieved higher than 400 m2·g-1. Solvothermal precipitation co-polymerization can be expected in scale-up fabrication of various monodisperse functional microspheres free of any surfactant and additive.

Abstract:A combination Of Suspension polymerization and postcrosslinking was used to prepare hypercrosslinked polystyrene (H-PS) microspheres with controllably bimodal pc re size distribution in the presence of toluene and polypropylene (PP) as a coporogen. The proportion of PP in the coporogen was changed to investigate the influence of the coporogen composition on the pore structure of the H-PS microspheres. The addition of a small amount of PP achieved the aim of a clearly bimodal pore size distribution and the control of the macroporosity of the H-PS microspheres, which have potential application in the preparation of catalyst Supports. The specific surface area of the H-PS microspheres could be adjusted in the range 380-790 m(2)/g by changes in the concentration of FT in the coporogen. Moreover, the H-PS microspheres displayed all the characteristics of Davankov-type resins by their ability to be swollen in both thermodynamically poor solvents such as water and good solvents such as toluene. Finally, the possible mechanism of porosity formation during polymerization and postcrosslinking was also examined by a combination of pore structure data and the appearance of the microspheres before and after postcrosslinking. Abstract:Poly(styrene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) latex microspheres with uniform size and high-density epoxy groups on the surface were prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization with batch wise operation mode in the presence of 2,2'azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride as an initiator. The kinetics of soap-free emulsion polymerization and the effects of polymerization factors were examined. In addition, the optimum polymerization conditions of poly(styrene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) latex microspheres for immobilization of biomolecules were obtained.

Abstract:Macroporous copolymer particles have a broad range of applications such as ion exchange resins and sorbents, catalyst supports, and carriers of biologically active species. Many of these applications require precise control of the dimensions of microbeads in the range from 50 to 100 mu m and predetermined size of pores. IN This paper reports semicontinuous photoinitiated microfluidic synthesis of macroporous polymer particles with the designated dimensions and a range of internal structures. Comparison with microspheres synthesized by conventional suspension polymerization shows,that microfluidic synthesis provides better control over the porous structure of the microbeads.

Abstract:This paper reports an efficient method of preparing porous polymeric microspheres by solvent evaporation in foam phase, in which phase separation between polymer and porogen occurs in foam phase instead of that in water phase by using the traditional solvent evaporation method. The method provides outstanding features, including being time-saving, of high-yield and able for continuous production, in which formation of porous polymeric microspheres finished within 3 min with a high production yield up to approximate 95 wt.% and the process was able to be developed into a continuous process for production of porous polymeric microspheres. It was also universal to non-crosslinked polymers since the method is a development on the traditional emulsion solvent evaporation method. Abstract:Poly(St/DVB/GMA) nanospheres (PNs) were prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization and the surfaces of the PNs were further functionalized by the thiol-epoxy “click-chemistry” of surface pendant epoxy groups with functional thiols. A variety of functional groups were successfully grafted to the PNs surfaces at high densities as exemplified by the reactions with 2-aminoethanethiol, thioglycolic acid, and 2-mercaptoethanol. All the reactions were easily controlled and the modified polymer nanospheres were well-dispersed in water. Very high surface charges were observed for the 2-aminoethanethiol and thioglycolic acid modified PNs in water, a manifestation of the high surface grafting densities of the ionizable groups. The adsorptions of acid orange and toluidine blue to, respectively, the 2-aminoethanethiol and thioglycolic acid functionalized PNs were examined, which fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model. For the 2-aminoethanethiol modified PNs, the surface amino group density was found to be 1.1mequiv/g, with an adsorption capacity of 398mg/g of acid orange; while the thioglycolic acid modified PNs displayed 1.4mequiv/g carboxylate groups and an adsorption capacity of 416mg/g for toluidine blue. The new synthetic method appears to be general in scope and adaptive to a variety of surface functionalities and potential applications.
