Abstract:A method for the aerobic oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids in water by using an inorganic-ligand-supported copper catalyst was developed. This method was performed with the use of atmospheric oxygen as the sole oxidant under extremely mild aqueous conditions, and furthermore, a wide range of aldehydes with various functional groups were tolerated. The copper catalyst could be recycled and used in successive reactions at least six times without any appreciable degradation in performance. This method is operationally simple and avoids the use of high-costing, toxic, air/moisture-sensitive, and commercially unavailable organic ligands. The generality of this method gives it potential to be used on the industrial scale.

Abstract:A copper‐catalysed (diacetoxyiodo)benzene‐promoted aerobic esterification reaction of acetoacetamides was developed for the synthesis of oxamates, which are useful precursors in synthetic organic chemistry. This practical and mild synthetic approach proceeded at 25 °C under open‐air conditions and afforded methyl 2‐oxo‐2‐(phenylamino)acetates in good to excellent yields combined with C−C σ‐bond cleavage and formal oxidative C−H bond functionalization. A mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:Efficient copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidative C-H and C-C functionalization of 1-[2-(arylamino)aryl]ethanones leading to acridones has been developed. The procedure involves cleavage of aromatic C-H and acetyl C-C bonds with intramolecular formation of a diarylketone bond. The protocol uses inexpensive Cu(O2CCF3)2 as catalyst, pyridine as additive, and economical and environmentally friendly oxygen as the oxidant, and the corresponding acridones with various functional groups were obtained in moderate to good yields.

Abstract:Here, the first copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols to carboxylic acids with TEMPO and KHSO4 as the co-catalysts has been developed. The reaction exhibits excellent substrate scope and functional group compatibility under mild conditions. Even the very sensitive chiral alcohols, chiral amino alcohols, and alcohol-containing steroid skeletons may be oxidized to afford the corresponding carboxylic acids or lactones without racemization.

Abstract:A novel K2S2O8-promoted decarboxylative cross coupling of alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids with cyclic ethers was developed under aerobic conditions. The present protocol, which includes C-C and C=0 bond formation in one step through addition, oxidation, and decarboxylation processes, leads to the desired ketone products in moderate to excellent yields. In addition, mechanism studies showed that the transformation process undergoes a radical pathway via a direct ether.

Abstract:A novel strategy involving Cu-catalyzed oxidative transformation of ketone-derived hydrazone moiety to various synthetic valuable internal alkynes and diynes has been developed. This method features inexpensive metal catalyst, green oxidant, good functional group tolerance, high regioselectivity and readily available starting materials. Oxidative deprotonation reactions were carried out to form internal alkynes and symmetrical diynes. Cross-coupling reactions of hydrazones with halides and terminal alkynes were performed to afford functionalized alkynes and unsymmetrical conjugated diynes. A mechanism proceeding through a Cu-carbene intermediate is proposed for the CC triple bond formation.

Abstract:A copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidative cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) of amine with α-carbonyl aldehyde has been developed. Many types of amines are tolerant in this transformation leading to various α-ketoamides compounds. Wide substrate scope, CDC strategy and using air as oxidant make this transformation highly efficient and practical. Molecular oxygen acts not only as the oxidant, but also as an initiator to trigger this catalytic process. Furthermore, mechanism studies show that carbonyl group of α-carbonyl aldehyde plays a role as the directing group to facilitate this chemical process.

Abstract:An effective catalytic method for alpha-phosphoryloxylation of ketones is reported. When ketones were reacted with phosphates in the presence of iodobenzene as the recyclable catalyst and m-chloroperbenzoic acid as the terminal oxidant in acetonitrile at room temperature, the alpha-phosphoryloxylation of ketones took place easily and the corresponding keto phosphates were obtained in moderate to good yields.

Abstract:We report a safe and convenient open-flask copper-catalyzed selective oxidation/functionalization methodology for tetrahydrocarbolines and tetrahydro-β-carbolines that employs atmospheric O<sub>2</sub> as the terminal oxidant. The system is applicable to oxidative rearrangement of tetrahydro-β-carbolines, tetrahydrocarboline oxidation to α-alkoxy carbazoles and spirooxindoles, and Witkop oxidation. Mechanistic experiments indicated that a single-electron oxidation process is responsible for the tunable selectivity control. This copper-catalysis protocol represents a significant advance in the field of indole oxidation.

Abstract:A general and facile approach for the direct oxidative α-acyloxylation of ketones using molecular oxygen as the oxidant is developed. This method avoids the use of excessive peroxides and expensive metal catalysts, affording a variety of α-acyloxylated ketones in satisfactory yields. Experimental studies indicate that the reaction proceeds via a radical pathway. Additionally, α-hydroxy ketones could be obtained by changing the solvent.

Abstract:Summary of main observation and conclusionSelenium and copper synergistically catalyzed the oxidation/alkoxylation of methyl ketones to synthesize α‐keto acetals directly. Using O2 as oxidant and alcohol as solvent and alkoxylation reagent, the reaction is practical from industrial viewpoint. Mechanistic studies revealed that copper promoted the oxidation of organoselenium intermediates with O2 to allow the key rearrangement and selenoxide syn‐elimination regenerating the catalytically active organoselenium species.

Abstract:The Cu-catalyzed novel aerobic oxidative esterification reaction of 1,3-diones for the synthesis of α-ketoesters has been developed. Abstract:AbstractA novel copper‐catalyzed, multiple oxidative dehydrogenative functionalization of arylacetaldehydes leading to 2‐oxo‐acetamidine compounds has been developed. This transformation is highly efficient with dissociation of six hydrogens including two sp3 CH and one sp2 CH bond activations. This method not only provides an efficient approach to 2‐oxo‐acetamidine compounds, but also offers a valuable mechanistic insight into this novel copper catalysis.
