Abstract:We survey solvability of equations in wreath products of groups, and prove that the quadratic diophantine problem is solvable in wreath products of Abelian groups. We consider the related question of determining commutator width, and prove that the quadratic diophantine problem is also solvable in Baumslag's finitely presented metabelian group. This text is a short version of an extensive article by the first-named authors.

A Systematic Study of Isomorphism Invariants of Finite Groups via the Weisfeiler-Leman Dimension

Abstract:We investigate the relationship between various isomorphism invariants for finite groups. Specifically, we use the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension (WL) to characterize, compare and quantify the effectiveness and complexity of invariants for group isomorphism. It turns out that a surprising number of invariants and characteristic subgroups that are classic to group theory can be detected and identified by a low dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm. These include the center, the inner automorphism group, the commutator subgroup and the derived series, the abelian radical, the solvable radical, the Fitting group and $\pi$-radicals. A low dimensional WL algorithm additionally determines the isomorphism type of the socle as well as the factors in the derived series and the upper and lower central series. We also analyze the behavior of the WL algorithm for group extensions and prove that a low dimensional WL algorithm determines the isomorphism types of the composition factors of a group. Finally we develop a new tool to define a canonical maximal central decomposition for groups. This allows us to show that the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension of a group is at most one larger than the dimensions of its direct indecomposable factors. In other words the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension increases by at most 1 when taking direct products.

Abstract:We study the Hopf property for wreath products of finitely generated groups, focusing on the case of an abelian base group. Our main result establishes a strong connection between this problem and Kaplansky's stable finiteness conjecture. Namely, the latter holds true if and only if for every finitely generated abelian group A and every finitely generated Hopfian group the wreath product is Hopfian. In fact, we characterize precisely when is Hopfian, in terms of the existence of one-sided units in certain matrix algebras over , for every prime p occurring as the order of some element in A . A tool in our arguments is the fact that fields of positive characteristic locally embed into matrix algebras over thus reducing the stable finiteness conjecture to the case of . A further application of this result shows that the validity of Kaplansky's stable finiteness conjecture is equivalent to a version of Gottschalk's surjunctivity conjecture for additive cellular automata.

Abstract:In this article we study a coarse version of the $K$-theoretic Farrell--Jones conjecture we call coarse or bounded isomorphism conjecture. Using controlled category theory we are able to translate this conjecture for asymptotically faithful covers into a more familiar form. This allows us to prove the conjecture for box spaces of residually finite groups whose Farrell--Jones assembly map with coefficients is an isomorphism.

On the Springer correspondence for wreath products

Abstract:We first show that the wreath product $\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d$ between two symmetric groups appears as the generalized Weyl group of an Iwahori's generalized Tits system. We then introduce a certain subvariety of the flag variety of type A, and then give a geometric proof of its Bruhat decomposition indexed by $\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d$, via the Bialynicki-Birula decomposition. Furthermore, we realize the group algebra $\mathbb{Q}[\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d]$ as the top Borel-Moore homology of a Steinberg variety. Such a geometric realization leads to a Springer correspondence for the irreducible representations over $\mathbb{C}[\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d]$, which can be regarded as a counterpart of the Clifford theory for wreath products. Consequently, we have obtained a new Springer correspondence of type B/C/D using essentially type A geometry.

Abstract:This paper sets up a framework to organize anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory in the context of the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for unitary groups. We propose multiple main conjectures depending on archimedean weight interlacing conditions, generalizing phenomena in the anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of elliptic curves. We also prove an abstract theorem in Galois cohomology which relates the conjectures.

Abstract:We develop a method for proving the Boone--Higman Conjecture for groups acting on locally finite trees. As a consequence, we prove the Boone--Higman Conjecture for all Baumslag--Solitar groups and for all free(finite rank)-by-cyclic groups, solving it in two cases that have been raised explicitly by Belk, Bleak, Matucci and Zaremsky. We also illustrate that our method has applications beyond these cases and can for instance be used to prove the Boone--Higman Conjecture for the Leary--Minasyan groups.

Abstract:In recent papers we have refined a conjecture of Lehrer and Solomon expressing the characters of a finite Coxeter group $W$ afforded by the homogeneous components of its Orlik-Solomon algebra as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$. Our refined conjecture also relates the Orlik-Solomon characters above to the terms of a decomposition of the regular character of $W$ related to the descent algebra of $W$. A consequence of our conjecture is that both the regular character of $W$ and the character of the Orlik-Solomon algebra have parallel, graded decompositions as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$. The refined conjecture has been proved for symmetric and dihedral groups. In this paper we develop algorithmic tools to prove the conjecture computationally for a given finite Coxeter group. We use these tools to verify the conjecture for all finite Coxeter groups of rank three and four, thus providing previously unknown decompositions of the regular characters and the Orlik-Solomon characters of these groups.

Abstract:Let K = Q(root-q), where q is any prime number congruent to 7 modulo 8, and let O be the ring of integers of K. The prime 2 splits in K, say 2O = pp*, and there is a unique Z(2)-extension K-infinity of K which is unramified outside p. Let H be the Hilbert class field of K, and write H-infinity = HK infinity. Let M(H-infinity) be the maximal abelian 2-extension of H-infinity which is unramified outside the primes above p, and put X(H-infinity) = Gal(M(H-infinity)/H-infinity). We prove that X(H-infinity) is always a finitely generated Z(2)-module, by an elliptic analogue of Sinnott's cyclotomic argument. We then use this result to prove for the first time the weak p-adic Leopoldt conjecture for the compositum J(infinity) of K-infinity with arbitrary quadratic extensions J of H. We also prove some new cases of the finite generation of the Mordell-Weil group E(J(infinity)) modulo torsion of certain elliptic curves E with complex multiplication by O.

Abstract:We prove Turner's conjecture, which describes the blocks of the Hecke algebras of the symmetric groups up to derived equivalence as certain explicit Turner double algebras. Turner doubles are Schur-algebra-like `local' objects, which replace wreath products of Brauer tree algebras in the context of the Broué abelian defect group conjecture for blocks of symmetric groups with non-abelian defect groups. The main tools used in the proof are generalized Schur algebras corresponding to wreath products of zigzag algebras and imaginary semicuspidal quotients of affine KLR algebras.

An Arad and Fisman's theorem on products of conjugacy classes revisited

Abstract:A theorem of Z. Arad and E. Fisman establishes that if $A$ and $B$ are two conjugacy classes of a finite group $G$ such that either $AB=A\cup B$ or $AB=A^{-1} \cup B$, then $G$ cannot be non-abelian simple. We demonstrate that, in fact, $\langle A\rangle = \langle B\rangle$ is solvable, the elements of $A$ and $B$ are $p$-elements for some prime $p$, and $\langle A\rangle $ is $p$-nilpotent. Moreover, under the second assumption, it turns out that $A=B$ and this is the only possible case. This research is done by appealing to recently developed techniques and results that are based on the Classification of Finite Simple Groups.

An unconditional proof of the abelian equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture and applications

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We give an unconditional proof of the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real fields for every admissible one-dimensional $p$-adic Lie extension whose Galois group has an abelian Sylow $p$-subgroup. Crucially, this result does not depend on the vanishing of any $\mu$-invariant. As applications, we deduce the Coates-Sinnott conjecture away from its $2$-primary part and new cases of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for Tate motives.

The Weil-Steinberg character of finite classical groups

Abstract:We compute the irreducible constitutents of the product of the Weil character and the Steinberg character in those finite classical groups for which a Weil character is defined, namely the symplectic, unitary and general linear groups. It turns out that this product is multiplicity free for the symplectic and general unitary groups, but not for the general linear groups. As an application we show that the restriction of the Steinberg character of such a group to the subgroup stabilizing a vector in the natural module is multiplicity free. The proof of this result for the unitary groups uses an observation of Brunat, published as an appendix to our paper. As our "Weil character" for the symplectic groups in even characteristic we use the 2-modular Brauer character of the generalized spinor representation. Its product with the Steinberg character is the Brauer character of a projective module. We also determine its indecomposable direct summands.

Abstract:Let π be a set of primes. By H. Wielandt's definition, Sylow π-theorem holds for a finite group G if all maximal π-subgroups of G are conjugate. In the paper, the following statement is proven. Assume that π is a union of disjoint subsets σ and τ and a finite group G possesses a π-Hall subgroup which is a direct product of a σ-subgroup and a τ-subgroup. Furthermore, assume that both the Sylow σ-theorem and τ-theorem hold for G. Then the Sylow π-theorem holds for G. This result confirms a conjecture posed by H. Wielandt in 1959.
On the parallel complexity of Group Isomorphism via Weisfeiler-Leman

Abstract:In this paper, we show that the constant-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm for groups (Brachter & Schweitzer, LICS 2020) can be fruitfully used to improve parallel complexity upper bounds on isomorphism testing for several families of groups. In particular, we show: - Groups with an Abelian normal Hall subgroup whose complement is $O(1)$-generated are identified by constant-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman using only a constant number of rounds. This places isomorphism testing for this family of groups into $\textsf{L}$; the previous upper bound for isomorphism testing was $\textsf{P}$ (Qiao, Sarma, & Tang, STACS 2011). - We use the individualize-and-refine paradigm to obtain a $\textsf{quasiSAC}^{1}$ isomorphism test for groups without Abelian normal subgroups, previously only known to be in $\textsf{P}$ (Babai, Codenotti, & Qiao, ICALP 2012). - We extend a result of Brachter & Schweitzer (arXiv, 2021) on direct products of groups to the parallel setting. Namely, we also show that Weisfeiler-Leman can identify direct products in parallel, provided it can identify each of the indecomposable direct factors in parallel. They previously showed the analogous result for $\textsf{P}$. We finally consider the count-free Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm, where we show that count-free WL is unable to even distinguish Abelian groups in polynomial-time. Nonetheless, we use count-free WL in tandem with bounded non-determinism and limited counting to obtain a new upper bound of $\beta_{1}\textsf{MAC}^{0}(\textsf{FOLL})$ for isomorphism testing of Abelian groups. This improves upon the previous $\textsf{TC}^{0}(\textsf{FOLL})$ upper bound due to Chattopadhyay, Torán, & Wagner (ACM Trans. Comput. Theory, 2013).
