Abstract:The preparation and characterization of nanocomposites of poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, with acid treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) with a wide composition range, from 0.1 to 5.0% MWCNT by weight, is reported. Effect of uniaxial orientation by zone drawing on these nanocomposites is discussed and compared with unoriented compression molded films. Static room temperature two-dimensional wide angle X-ray scattering and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used for phase identification. Differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and thermogravimetic analysis (TGA) were used to study the thermal and mechanical properties. Incorporation of MWCNT into PVDF has no obvious effect in forming beta phase crystal in the PVDF/MWCNT bulk films, while zone drawing cause a significant alpha to beta transition in PVDF/MWCNT. Results indicate that MWCNTs act as nucleation agent during crystallization and slightly increase the degree of crystallinity of PVDF/MWCNT bulk films. TGA indicates the thermal stability is improved when MWCNT concentration increases for unoriented PVDF/MWCNT film. The modulus also increases significantly when MWCNT concentration increases. The glass transition temperature measured by the peak position of tan delta from DMA does not change with MWCNT concentration, but a slightly higher glass transition can be obtained by zone drawing. Abstract:The carbon nanotube (CNT) is a compelling and promising material for industrial applications requiring high strength and rigidity. For a multi-walled CNT (MWCNT), the nominal tensile strength and Young's modulus (considering the whole cross-sectional area of the specimen) are key mechanical factors for the practical application of macroscopic fibers and composites. However, the nominal tensile strength and Young's modulus of MWCNTs are much lower than their effective tensile strength and Young's modulus (considering the fracture cross-sectional area) because the outermost graphite layer always fractures first due to the low cross-link between graphite layers. In this paper, we fabricated the carbon nanofibers (CNFs) by epitaxial growth on super-aligned MWCNT film template and conducted in situ uniaxial tensile tests on individual carbon-nanotube-templated CNFs. The individual CNFs show improved nominal mechanical performance than previously reported MWCNTs. The nominal mechanical properties enhancement of the CNFs is attributed to the effective control on load transfer between interwalls.
Enhancement of β-phase in PVDF by electrospinning

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), a polymorphic material, has useful electro active properties such as piezo-, pyro-, and ferroelectric properties. The piezoelectric crystallization polymorph is the β-phase which has an all-trans (TTTT) conformation, i.e., all of its dipoles aligned in the same direction normal to the chain axis. Elongational deformation was applied to poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) / multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites. Its effect on the conversion of the α-phase crystals into the β-phase crystals and on the piezoelectric propertes was investigated. Elongational deformation of PVDF molecules made it easier for the CF2 groups to arrange themselves in the same conformation by reducing the steric hindrance. However, macro-deformation was dominant in the drawn films, though the interfacial interaction between the functional groups on the MWCNTs and the CF2 dipole of PVDF chains helped the conversion of α-phase. Uniform distribution of MWCNT in the electrospun films helps efficient charge accumulation at the interface between the MWCNTs and the matrix PVDF molecules. Deploarization effect occurred in the pressed film due to the excessive charge accumulation was not observed, resulting in the high conversion of α-phase into β-phase as well as the enhancement of remanent polarization and the mechanical displacement. Added MWCNT helps the film to be extended without rupturing.

Abstract:This paper reports a facile method of fabricating high conductivity and good mechanical properties of ployvinylidene fluoride/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PVDF/MWNTs) nanofibrous composites by an ultrasonication anchoring technique. Microstructures, electrical conductivity, mechanical and thermal properties of the PVDF/MWNTs nanofibrous composites were studied. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the MWNTs were uniformly anchored onto the surface and interspace of PVDF nanofibrous composites and the conductive network structures were easily formed. The PVDF/MWNTs nanofibrous composites exhibited excellent conductivity of 10(-2) S m(-1) with 3.91 wt% MWNTs anchored. This work opens a new path to optimize the conductivity of thermoplastic polymer nanocomposites with a wide range of application in the field of electronic and electrical engineering. Abstract:Many efforts have been performed on the poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, due to its piezoelectric, pyroelectric and ferroelectric potentials. In this regard, how to fabricate the PVDF with high content of β-phase, which is also the direct contribution to PVDF's prominent property, becomes a critical issue. In this study, starting with the α-phase dominated sample, the PVDF with extremely high content of β-crystalline phase was obtained by the incorporation of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified by hyperbranched copolymers (HBCs). We proved that, via XRD, DSC as well as the structural characterizations from the polarized optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the success of this strategy was ascribed to the enhanced dispersibility and stability of MWCNTs endowed by the HBCs, which significantly favors the formation of the β-crystalline phase of PVDF.
Significant Improvement of Mechanical Properties Observed in Highly Aligned Carbon-Nanotube-Reinforced Nanofibers

Abstract:Continuous macroscopic aligned polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite nanofiber sheets embedded with highly aligned PAN-grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been prepared by electrospinning followed by hot-stretching. Homogeneous and highly aligned MWCNTs in the polymer matrix were obtained by hotstretching of the electrospun fibers, which led to a significant enhancement in the mechanical performance of the resulting composite nanofiber sheets. After hot-stretching, the tensile strength and modulus of an electrospun PAN nanofiber sheet (containing 2 wt% grafted MWCNTs) increased by 320.7% and 204.5%, respectively, compared with the values for the pristine PAN terpolymer. In addition we show, for the first time, that a Raman mapping method can be successfully employed to investigate the distribution and alignment of MWCNTs in nanofiber sheets.

Abstract:In this work, a facile and effective approach was developed to enhance para-aramid fiber (AF). Poly-p-paraphenylene terephthalamide oligomer modified amino-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PPTA-MWNTs-x) were prepared and deposited on the surface of AF. TEM and AFM analyses proved the successful grafting of PPTA oligomers onto the surface of MWNTs-NH2. The modified MWNTs showed better dispersion stability compared with that of MWNTs-NH2. PPTA-MWNTs-x deposited on the AF surface was characterized by SEM and XRD. SEM images showed a relatively homogeneous distribution of PPTA-MWNTs-x over the aramid fibers. XRD analysis showed the crystallographic index value of AF/PPTA-MWNTs-x increased significantly as compared to that of AF, suggesting a more regular and ordered crystalline structure. The tensile test and single fiber pullout test were conducted. The results confirmed that PPTA-MWNTs-x could greatly enhance the mechanical properties of AF and improve the interfacial properties of EP/AF and PP/AF composites.

Abstract:In this work, the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composites were prepared by the electrospinning-hot pressing method. The MWCNTs distributed well in the PVDF matrix, which was confirmed by the investigation of scanning electron microscope. According to the results of the Fourier transform infrared and the wide-angle X-ray diffraction, a large amount of the useful polar β crystalline phase of PVDF was formed in the MWCNTs/PVDF composites due to the synergic effect of the electrospinning and the MWCNTs. Moreover, the good dielectric performance of the MWCNTs/PVDF composites could be not only obtained from the electrospinning-hot pressing method but also controlled by the layer amount of the electrospun wrap-wrap laminated MWCNTs/PVDF composite membrane in the hot pressing step. When the MWCNTs was 5 wt%, the dielectric constant of the three-layer MWCNTs/PVDF composite reached as high as 74.6 at 1000 Hz with the dielectric loss factor of only 0.124.

Abstract:Electrospinning was applied to produce oriented nanofibers consisting of thermal-plastic polyurethane (TPU)and multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs)composites.Comparison TPU/MWNTs films were made through casting technology.The relationship between relative changes in resistance versus tensile strain has been analyzed.The maximum gauge factor (≈1 1 .4)of fibers was reached when the mass fraction of MWNTs was 1.84%.At the same mass fraction,gauge factor of films was only 2.6.The piezoresistive response of fi-bers was linear within 8% of tensile strain which was better than that of TPU/MWNTs films.

Abstract:In this paper, the fluoro-polymer-coated multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by in situ atom transfer radical polymerization of 2-(perfluoroalkyl) ethyl methacrylate (FEMA) on the surface of MWCNTs. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the fluoro-polymer on MWCNTs surface improved the dispersion and compatibility of MWCNTs in the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix. The PFEMA@MWCNTs/PVDF composites exhibited improved thermal stability and reduced crystallinity due to enhanced interface strength between MWCNTs and PVDF. Furthermore, nearly 100% polar phase PVDF formed after introducing high PFEMA@MWCNTs content into PVDF matrix. It was also found that PFEMA@MWCNTs-filled PVDF composites present advantages in increasing dielectric constants and decreasing loss tangents due to the restriction of interface polarization and leakage current. Based on the percolation threshold and ac conductivities, the PFEMA@MWCNTs/PVDF composites exhibit good insulation properties and are promising for high-performance dielectric composite applications.

Abstract:The β -phase poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has attracted much interest as energy harvesting materials in powering flexible devices for its promising piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. Intensive stretching and high electrical field are introduced in the electrospinning process, which contributes to alignment of PVDF molecular chains and results in the PVDF β -phase crystallization from solution. Also the slim cylinder-like geometry of the electrospun fibers has high surface-to-volume ratio and increases the inhomogeneous nucleation of PVDF. A proper compression stress during annealing will increase the mobility of molecular chains and lead to growth of the β phase.

Abstract:Highly aligned polyimide (PI) and PI/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PI/MWCNTs) nanofibrous composites by incorporating poly(ethylene oxide) as the dispersing medium were fabricated using electrospinning technique. The morphology, mechanical, and electrical properties of the electrospun nanofibrous composites were investigated. Scanning electron microscope showed that the functionalized MWCNTs (f-MWCNTs) were well dispersed and oriented along the nanofiber axis. Analysis of electrical properties indicated a remarkable improvement on the alternating current conductivity by introduction of the aligned f-MWCNTs. Besides, with addition of 3 vol. % f-MWCNTs, the obvious enhancement of tensile modulus and strength was achieved. Thus, the electrospun PI/MWCNTs nanofibrous composites have great potential applications in multifunctional engineering materials.
Influence of a Liquid-Like MWCNT Reinforcement on Interfacial and Mechanical Properties of Carbon Fiber Filament Winding Composites

Abstract:A kind of liquid-like multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforcements was prepared and dispersed into epoxy matrix. The effects of the liquid-like MWCNT reinforcements on the processing, mechanical and interfacial properties of carbon fiber filament wound composites were investigated. The results showed that the liquid-like MWCNT reinforcements can be uniformly dispersed in epoxy matrix which showed the good processing properties for winding technology. The liquid-like MWCNT reinforcements could participate in the cross-linking reaction with epoxy groups, improve the interfacial bonding between carbon fibers and resin matrix, and change the failure mode of the resulting composites. Compared to the neat epoxy system, the significant enhancement in tensile and compressive properties of resin matrix was realized by adding 3 wt% liquid-like MWCNT reinforcements. Meanwhile an increase of 8 degrees C in glass transition temperature, 8% in interlaminar shear strength and 17% in tensile strength of MT300 carbon fiber Naval Ordnance Laboratory rings was achieved. Abstract:Polyimide (PI) and PI nanocomposite fibers containing different amounts of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were produced for the first time by electrospinning. The membranes prepared were composed of highly aligned nanofibers and showed significant enhancement in mechanical properties, compared with the membranes prepared by conventional solution-casting method. Surface-functionalized MWNTs were homogeneously dispersed and highly aligned along the fiber axis, whereas most of the pristine MWNTs formed aggregates or bundles and even protruded out of the electrospun nanofibers. The thermal and mechanical properties of polyimide matrix were significantly improved with the incorporation of MWNTs. And the elongation at break of the nanofiber membranes can reach 100% for the nanotube loading level of 3.5 wt %. It was found that electrospinning the in situ prepared MWNT/poly(amic acid) solution can achieve better polymer chain orientation and thus better mechanical properties of the as-prepared membranes. Our study demonstrates a good example for the preparation of high-performance polymer/carbon nanotube nanocomposites by using electrospinning.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) is a semicrystalline polymer highly used in the development of energy storage nanostructure devices, energy harvesting applications and customized sensors for biomedical applications. PVDF is also used in the fabrication of patient-specific sensors, microelectronics, and transducers. Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are used to enhance the β phase in the PVDF matrix. The present work establishes the thermally stable superhydrophobic doping of MWCNT in PVDF nanocomposite membranes in different weight percentages. The nanocomposite membranes are composed of PVDF and COOH treated with MWCNT via a solution mixing process. The carboxyl functionalized MWCNT was prepared to prevent the agglomeration of MWCNT in the PVDF matrix. Thin nanocomposite membranes of PVDF/COOH + MWCNT mixture were formed with the help of spin-coated on the ITO-coated conducting glass substrates. The morphological, thermal, and electrical measurements were performed in various concentrations of MWCNTs in the PVDF matrix. DSC thermograms demonstrate the crystalline behaviour of composite membranes in the β phase. The optimal concentration of 0.1% of MWCNT in PVDF/COOH nanocomposite membrane showed the highest structural stability, crystallinity, and electrical properties. It was observed that the appropriate addition of COOH functionalized MWCNT in PVDF improved the structural and morphological behaviour of the β phase of these nanocomposite membranes.

Abstract:Abstract Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a high purity thermoplastic fluropolymer that use in the aircraft, electronics, and chemical industry. Carbon nanotube (CNTs) is made up of rolled up of graphite sheets, exhibits excellent chemical, thermal, mechanical properties, and large surface areas. PVDF fibers blended with CNTs were able to enhance the β-phase which contributes to piezoelectric properties. Electrospinning is the simplest and low-cost method to produce PVDF/CNT fibers by dissolving PVDF in solvent N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF). 15wt% PVDF solution was used. CNT loading were varied at 0.0wt%, 0.35wt%, 0.80wt% and 1.00wt% with parameters of 20kV, tip-to-collector distance (TCD) 15cm and flow rate 1.0mLh-1. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), four-point probe and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) were used to determine the morphology and crystallinity of electrospun PVDF/CNT fibers. The SEM analysis concluded all fibers showed beaded structure due to low concentration of PVDF solution with insufficient ultrasonification and stirring, cause electrospraying and agglomeration. XRD and four-point probe analysis concluded PVDF/0.35wt%CNT showed the highest β-phase content with intense XRD peak and highest electrical conductivity. However, shift peak is observed among all fibres due to short electrospinning time leads to insufficient thickness of electrospun mat, which affects the mechanical properties of fibres and causes peak shift.

Abstract:Composite fibers made from aramid III and hydroxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-OH) combine the excellent mechanical and electrical properties of both components, resulting in strong antistatic performance. However, it is of paramount importance to ensure the homogeneous dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with hydroxyl groups (MWCNTs-OH) within the aramid III spinning solution and optimize the compatibility between the two constituents to augment the overall performance of the composite fibers. To this end, this investigation successfully accomplished the dispersion of MWCNTs-OH in the spinning solution and probed the dispersion mechanism using molecular dynamics simulations. Moreover, composite fibers, comprising 2.4 weight percent MWCNTs-OH, were initially fabricated using the wet spinning method. These fibers displayed a uniform texture and a tensile strength of 1.210 GPa, signifying a noteworthy enhancement of 113.25% in comparison to the strength prior to modification. With respect to thermal behavior, the fibers exhibited a mass reduction of 21.24% within the temperature range of 0°C–538°C. In the temperature interval from 538°C to 800°C, the mass loss diminished to 10.31%, representing a substantial 71.03% reduction when compared to the unmodified state. Remarkably, even when subjected to temperatures exceeding 800°C, the composite fibers retained a residual mass of 68.45%, indicating a notable 61.17% increase from their initial condition. In terms of electrical properties, the fibers exhibited a specific resistance (ρ) of 3.330 × 10 9 Ω cm, demonstrating effective antistatic behavior. In summary, the antistatic composite fibers studied in this paper can effectively mitigate the hazards of static electricity in various applications, including military protection and engineering equipment in both military and civilian fields.

Abstract:Abstract This study treated the surface of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibres with plasma and optimized the parameters of plasma treatment. On this basis, UHMWPE fibre composites reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared, and the changes of UHMWPE fibres before and after modification in the chemical composition, surface morphology, and mechanical properties were studied. The results showed that oxygen-containing functional groups and active free radicals on the surface of plasma treated UHMWPE fibres increased. Tensile strength and modulus of UHMWPE fibre composites reinforced with CNTs increased by 16.3% and 21%.
