Abstract:In the past decades, extensive efforts have been devoted to the mechanistic understanding of various heterogeneous Fenton reactions. Nevertheless, controversy still remains on the oxidation mechanism/pathway toward different organic compounds in the classical iron oxide-based Fenton reaction, largely because the role of the interaction between the organic compounds and the catalyst has been scarcely considered. Here, we revisited the classic heterogeneous ferrihydrite (Fhy)/H2O2 system toward different organic compounds on the basis of a series of degradation experiments, alcohol quenching experiments, theoretical modeling, and intermediate analysis. The Fhy/H2O2 system exhibited highly selective oxidation toward the group of compounds that bear carboxyl groups, which tend to complex with the surface ≡Fe(III) sites of the Fhy catalyst. Such interaction results in a nonradical inner sphere electron transfer process, which seizes one electron from the target compound and features negligible inhibition by the radical quencher. In contrast, for the oxidation of organic compounds that could not complex with the catalyst, the traditional HO· process makes the main contribution, which proceeds via hydroxyl addition reaction and could be readily suppressed by the radical quencher. This study implies that the interaction between the organic compounds and the catalyst plays a decisive role in the oxidation pathway and mechanism of the target compounds and provides a holistic understanding on the iron oxide-based heterogeneous Fenton system.

Abstract:The Fenton system generates reactive species with high oxidation potential such as hydroxyl radicals (HO center dot) or ferryl via the reaction between Fe (II) and H2O2. However, a number of drawbacks limit its widespread application including the accumulation of Fe (III) and the narrow pH range limits, etc. The aim of this study is to propose a much more efficient Fenton-HA system which is characterized by combining Fenton system with hydroxylamine (NH2OH), a common reducing agent, to relieve the aforementioned drawbacks, with benzoic acid (BA) as the probe reagent. The presence of NH2OH in Fenton's reagent accelerated the Fe (III)/Fe (II) redox cycles, leading to relatively steady Fe (II) recovery, thus, increased the pseudo first-order reaction rates and expanded the effective pH range up to 5.7. The HO center dot mechanism was confirmed to be dominating in the Fenton-HA system, and the generation of HO center dot was much faster and the amount of HO center dot formed was higher than that in the classical Fenton system. Furthermore, the major end products of NH2OH in Fenton-HA system were supposed to be NO3- and N2O.

Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:The oxidation activities of various catalysts were compared using 1000 mg/L phenol solution as the substrates.According to the experimental results,it was indicated that when Fe3+ and Fe2+ were combined as composite catalysts,the loss of Fe2+ could be minimized and the utilization rate of the catalysts,as well as that of H2O2 were increased,which contributed to improve the oxidation activity of Fenton system.While H2O2 was added by drop wise,the usage of catalysts can be decreased to 50%,moreover,the good oxidation activity was maintained at the same time and the decreasing rate of COD can reach 80% approximately.
Mechanistic insight into active species formation during Fenton-like processes by regulating dissimilar charged groups on Fe 3 O 4 nanospheres

Abstract:Iron-mediated activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) had long been of great interest for the effective oxidation of micropollutants. However, how the chemical environment of iron oxides influence active species formation in heterogeneous Fenton processes was poorly understood. Herein, Fe 3 O 4 -X nanospheres (X = –NH 2 , –COOH) were synthesized for coordination chemical environment regulation. The DFT calculation showed the models of Fe 3 O 4 -X modified by –NH 2 and –COOH in four-coordination and six-coordination environments. Among them, Fe 3 O 4 -COOH in four-coordination environment had the lowest formation energy and highest adsorption energy combined with PMS, with a most stable system. In the adsorption model of four-coordination Fe 3 O 4 -COOH, the d-orbitals and s-orbitals energy levels of Fe atoms underwent drastic changes compared with those before adsorption, H atoms on the carboxyl group and O atoms on the PMS formed a new HO – that attached to Fe atoms, with a strong coupling between them. The simulation results confirmed the proposed activation mechanism of Fe 3 O 4 -COOH activating PMS to generate SO 4 ·- and HO – , and then partial SO 4 ·- reacted with HO – to generate ·OH, and finally the two radicals attacked tetracycline (TC) together. In Fe 3 O 4 -COOH/PMS system, Fe 3 O 4 -COOH/PMS system can convert more Fe 2+ into Fe 3+ , which also means that more Fe 2+ reacts with PMS to produce Fe 3+ and SO 4 ·- . The TC degradation efficiency of the Fe 3 O 4 -COOH/PMS system was 93%, higher than that of the Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 /PMS system after 30 min of reaction. Consequently, this work contributes to the mechanistic insight into active species regulation during Fenton-like processes by manipulating surface groups.

Abstract:On the one hand, Fenton‐like reactions are common side reactions in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) could damage the active sites of single‐atom catalysts (SACs), thereby affecting the stability of the catalysts. On the other hand, the Fenton‐like reaction could generate radicals with strong oxidative properties, which could be used in the degradation of pollutants and tumor therapy. In this review, we summarize strategies to limit the occurrence of Fenton‐like reactions and improve the stability of SACs. In addition, the promotion of Fenton‐like reactivity of SACs and its application in related fields are also concluded.

Abstract:Nanoscale catalysts that can enable Fenton-like chemistry and produce reactive radicals from hydrogen peroxide activation have been extensively studied in order to overcome the limitations of homogeneous Fenton processes. Despite several advantageous features, limitation in mass transfer of short-lived radical species is an inherent drawback of the heterogeneous system. Here, we present a mechanistic foundation for the way spatial confinement of Fenton chemistry at the nanoscale can significantly enhance the kinetics of radical-mediated oxidation reactions—pollutant degradation in particular. We synthesized a series of Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>-functionalized nanoreactors with precise pore dimensions, based on an anodized aluminum oxide template, to enable quantitative analysis of nanoconfinement effects. Combined with computational simulation of spatial distribution of radicals, we found that hydroxyl radical concentration was strongly dependent on the distance from the surface of Fenton catalysts. This distance dependency significantly influences the gross reaction kinetics and accounts for the observed nanoconfinement effects. We further found that a length scale below 25 nm is critical to avoid the limitation of short-lived species diffusion and achieve kinetics that are orders of magnitude faster than those obtained in a batch suspension of heterogeneous catalysts. Abstract:How chemical environment of iron influence active species formation in heterogeneous Fenton processes is poorly understood. Herein, a series of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with various substituents (UiO-66-X) were prepared as templates for iron chemical environment regulation. The results show that bisphenol A (BPA) degraded in the system modified with electron-donating groups (X = -NH2, -OH, -OCH3) was predominantly attributed to HO center dot. While Fe(IV) was detected in systems modified with electron-withdrawing groups (X = -Cl, -F, -NO2). The introduction of electron-donating groups on FeOx@UiO-66-X increases the length of Fe-O bond from 2.06 to 2.12 angstrom, and reduces the binding energy of H2O2 on FeOx, which were beneficial for HO center dot generation. However, electron-withdrawing groups (X = -Cl, -F, -NO2) reduces the Fe-O bond length to 1.99 angstrom, and generates transition product Fe(IV)--O. Consequently, this research contributes to the first mechanistic insight into active species regulation during Fenton-like processes by manipulating substituents on MOFs ligand.

Abstract:Cu‐embedded mesoporous alumina, as a Fenton‐like catalyst prepared via a sol‐gel method, showed excellent activity and durability for the degradation of refectory compounds. The origin of active sites for the generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were thoroughly studied using multitechniques. Cu, as the only active element, could be penetrated into the bulk of alumina and some Cu atoms were embedded into the framework. The dynamic structure of surface Cu species (the variety of Cu+/Cu2+ ratio) during the reaction were determined as well. Furthermore, the structure plasticity of catalyst has proved by optimizing preparation and reaction conditions. A 98.53% degradation of RhB was recorded within 30 min, following a pseudo‐first‐order reaction rate expression. Electron spin resonance spectra and •OH scavenging experiments have confirmed that •OH is the main reactive oxidant for the elimination of RhB. By the surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy and gas chromatography‐mass spectrometer results, plausible pathways of RhB degradation were elaborated. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 64: 538–549, 2018

Abstract:Cu-based heterogeneous Fenton catalysts are promising for industrial wastewater treatment, nevertheless it remains a great challenge to understand the catalytic mechanism due to the difficulty in identifying the critical roles of coexisting Cu-0, Cu+ and Cu2+ species in the technical catalysts. In order to identify the catalytic roles of various copper species, core-shell Cu@SiO2 catalysts reduced at different reduction temperatures were studied for rhodamine B degradation. The Cu+ dominating catalyst, Cu@SiO2-R200, exhibited the highest degradation rate with more than 95% RhB (10 ppm) removal within 10 min. Combined with multiple techniques, including in situ spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, it can be concluded that Cu+ acts as the primary active species with the highest efficiency in activating the H2O2 to produce center dot OH and subsequently degrading the contaminants. In this work, the structure-performance relationship of Cu-based heterogeneous Fenton reaction was elucidated to inspire the rational design of high-performance heterogeneous catalysts.
Influence of Multi-Point Addition of H2O2 on ORP of Fe2+/H2O2 System

Abstract:In Fenton system,invalid consumption of hydroxyl radicals was directly influenced by adding ways of H2O2.Therefore,influence of multi-point addition of H2O2 on ORP of Fe2+/H2O2 system was experimentally studied and analyzed in this work.Results indicate that final ORP of system was higher when H2O2 was added by more points.Fe3+/Fe2+ was the main contribution substances.When hydroxyl radicals were captured,ORP of system would increase,which was attributed to change of circulation state of Fe3+/Fe2+.Invalid consumption of hydroxyl radicals by H2O2 was enhanced with increased temperature,which caused change of circulation state of Fe3+/Fe2+.Change process of ORP and final ORP was impacted by adding time scale of H2O2.When H2O2 was added within 4 min,Fenton system achieved highest final ORP,which showed in other conditions,Fe2+ could not be transferred to Fe3+ adequately;final ORP was lower and needed a longer time to reach stable level.

Abstract:The mutual transformation of reactive oxygen species may affect the structural transformation of catalysts during the Fenton-like processes. Its in-depth understanding is essential to achieve high catalytic activity and stability. In this study, a novel design of Cu(I) active sites based on the metal–organic framework (MOF) is proposed to "capture" OH − produced via Fenton-like processes and re-coordinate the oxidized Cu sites. The Cu(I)-MOF presents an excellent removal efficiency for sulfamethoxazole (SMX), with a high removal kinetic constant of 7.146 min −1 . Combing DFT calculations with experimental observations, we have revealed that the Cu of Cu(I)-MOF exhibits a lower d-band center, enabling efficient activation of H 2 O 2 and spontaneous "capturing" of OH − to form Cu-MOF, which can be reorganized into the Cu(I)-MOF through molecular regulation for recycle. This research demonstrates a promising Fenton-like approach for solving the trade-off between catalytic activity and stability and provides new insights into the design and synthesis of efficient MOF-based catalysts for water treatment.

Abstract:This study conducted a comparison of the CaO2-based Fenton (CaO2/Fe(II)) and Fenton-like (CaO2/Fe(III)) systems on their benzene degradation performance. The H2O2, Fe(II), Fe(III), and HO variations were investigated during the benzene degradation. Although benzene has been totally removed in the two systems, the variation patterns of the investigated parameters were different, leading to different benzene degradation patterns. In terms of the Fe(II)/Fe(III) conversion, the CaO2/Fe(II) and CaO2/Fe(III) systems were actually inseparable and had the inherent mechanism relationships. For the CaO2/Fe(III) system, the initial Fe(III) must be converted to Fe(II), and then the consequent Fenton reaction could be later developed with the regenerated Fe(II). Moreover, some benzene degradation intermediates could have the ability to facilitate the transformation of the Fe(III) to Fe(II) without the classic H2O2-associated propagation reactions. By varying the Fe(II) dosing method, an effective degradation strategy has been developed to take advantage of the two CaO2-based oxidation systems. The proposed strategy was further successfully tested in TCE degradation, therefore extending the potential for the application of this technique.

Abstract:The sluggish reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) restricts the decontamination efficiency of Fenton reactions. New strategy development toward enhancing Fe(II) regeneration and decontamination efficiency relies primarily on the well-established inorganic Fenton chemistry, yet the involvement of organic contaminants and its potential role in the Fenton reactions have been insufficiently concerned. Here, using 2,5-thiophene carboxylic acid (TDA) as a representative sulfur-containing heterocyclic contaminant and atrazine as a coexisting contaminant, we uncovered the promoting effect of thiophene derivatives on Fenton oxidation. The degradation of TDA and coexisting refractory contaminants was highly efficient in the sluggish Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 oxidation process with autocatalytic features. Spin trapping and chemical scavenging results underpinned the crucial contribution of hydroxyl radicals (HO center dot ) to organic oxidation. Analysis of iron cycling combined with theoretical calculations revealed that the enhancement of TDA on Fenton oxidation originated from the rapid reduction of Fe(III) by the primary radicals generated from addition of HO center dot to the thiophene ring.
Exploring the mechanism of the Fe(III)-activated Fenton-like reaction based on a quantitative study

Abstract:The Fenton method is an important water treatment process. However, the mechanism of the Fenton reaction is still not widely recognized. In this article, the autocatalysis process responsible for the degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) as well as the generation of Fe(ii) and the decomposition of H2O2 is elaborated using a Fe(iii)/H2O2 system. It was found that the one electron reduction of Fe(iii) to Fe(ii) via oxidization of H2O2 to & x2d9;HO2 is not spontaneous according to the standard electrode potential rather than being limited by the rate constant of 0.0027 M-1 s(-1) in view of the Haber-Weiss circulation. However, the reaction of Fe(iii) and 4-CP is spontaneous with a second-order kinetic rate constant of >0.12 M-1 s(-1) and a conversion rate of 0.56%, which triggers the switch of the Fenton-like reaction as a real rate-determining step. The circulation of Fe(iii) to Fe(ii) in the proposed Fenton-like reaction mechanism depends on the organic species and various intermediates, which indicates its reaction selectivity, preferable for organics with a stronger thermodynamic and kinetic activity. Besides, a slight pH decline with time-scale and the stoichiometric ratio of & x2d9;OH to H2O2 and H2O2 to 4-CP being 1 and 2, respectively, pointed to the new proposed reaction mechanism. The discovery of the new reaction mechanism might promote the theoretical and technical advancement of the Fenton-like process.
In situ acid production by organic matter induced with trace homogeneous Fenton reagent for membrane fouling control

Abstract:The homogeneous Fenton process involves both coagulation and oxidation, but it requires added acidity, so it is rarely used to control membrane fouling. This work found that the pH of neutral simulated wastewater sharply declined to 4.1 after pre-treatment with 0.1 mM Fenton reagent (Fe2+:H2O2=1:1) without added acidity. This occurred mainly because the trace homogeneous Fenton reagent induced in situ acid production by organic matter in the wastewater, which supplied the acidic conditions required for the Fenton reaction and ensured that the reaction could proceed continuously. Then, oxidation during the pre-Fenton process enhanced the electrostatic repulsion forces and effectively weakened the hydrogen bonds of organic matter at the membrane surface by altering the net charge and hydroxyl content of organic matter, while coagulation caused the foulants to gather and form large aggregates. These changes diminished the deposition of foulants onto the membrane surface and resulted in a looser fouling layer, which eventually caused the membrane fouling rate to decline from 83 % to 24 % and the flux recovery rate to increase from 44 % to 98 % during 2 h of filtration. This membrane fouling mitigation ability is much superior to that of pre-H2O2, pre-Fe2+ or pre-Fe3+ processes with equivalent doses.

Abstract:The heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction is an advanced oxidation process, which is widely recognized for its efficient removal of recalcitrant organic contaminants. In recent years, the construction of efficient and reusable heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts has been extensively investigated. Recently, the use of bimetallic oxides and their complexes as catalysts for Fenton-like reaction has attracted intense attention due to their high catalytic performance and excellent stability over a wide pH range. In this article, the fundamental mechanisms of Fenton-like reactions were briefly introduced. The important reports on bimetallic oxides and their complexes are classified in detail, which are mainly divided into Fe-based and Fe-free bimetallic catalysts. We then focused in depth on the performance of their respective applications in Fenton-like reactions. Special consideration has been given to the respective contributions and synergistic mechanisms of the two metals in catalysts. Overall, it is concluded that synergistic effect of the two metals in the bimetallic catalyst can boost the utilization of hydrogen peroxide, provide adequate accessible active sites, which are all beneficial to improve catalytic performance. Finally, the current challenges in this field were proposed. Our review is expected to provide help for the application of bimetallic oxides and their complexes.
