Abstract:Cobalt carbides have been recognized as an active phase for the production of light olefins and alcohols in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. In this study, in situ X-ray diffraction experiments were performed to investigate the stability and catalytic performance over a single-phase Co3C catalyst under reaction conditions. The in situ X-ray diffraction results indicated that the Co3C phase remained stable with no significant changes until the temperature reached 300 °C. The high stability can be attributed to the twinning structure of the single-phase Co3C catalyst. The catalytic evaluation results showed that the single-phase Co3C catalyst had higher activity with high selectivity to long-chain products due to the unique surface structure of Co3C. This work provides guidance for the rational design of efficient cobalt carbide catalysts for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis reactions.
Influences of Ordered Mesoporous Silica on Product Distribution over Nb-promoted Cobalt Catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis

Abstract:Nb-promoted cobalt catalysts supported on ordered mesoporous silica were prepared by sequential impregnation method and characterized by N2 physisorption, XRD, TEM, EDS-Mapping, H2-TPR, and CO-TPD. The performance of samples and the product distribution were investigated on a fixed bed reactor for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). In respect of porous properties, the modification of supports with Nb can reduce the BET surface areas, pore volume, and pore size, possibly owing to the fact that the pore of ordered mesoporous silica was covered partially by NbOx. After the modification of Nb, both the structures of SBA-15 and KIT-6 are very stable as a catalyst support, but that of Co/Nb-MCM-41 was obviously distorted. The formation of smaller cobalt particles occurs in the narrow pore size of support. The presence of NbOx on catalyst surface can significantly weaken the cobalt-support, and accelerate the reduction of cobalt oxides. Meanwhile, NbOx can significantly enhance the adsorption stability and amount of CO adsorbed at FTS reaction condition for Co/Nb-KIT-6 sample. The CO conversion and C5+ selectivity for Co/Nb-KIT-6 sample are 92.1% and 85.1%, which are all higher than other samples supported on SBA-15 and MCM-41, and Co/Nb-KIT-6 sample has a lower CH4 selectivity up to 7.7%. Therefore, the supports with larger pore size are in favour of the formation of larger Co particles, resulting in higher FTS reaction activity. In addition, the introduction of Nb into cobalt catalysts can accelerate FTS activity and the growth of hydrocarbon chains. However, Co/Nb-MCM-41 sample with smaller pores is beneficial to the formation of oxy-compound and its selectivity to alcohols is 4.5%. Wherein, Co/Nb-KIT-6 sample has a higher selectivity to C2+-OH up to 75%. Thus, KIT-6 modified by Nb can be applied as a promising support for FTS catalysts in terms of enriching the range of FTS products.
Synchrotron Radiation in Situ X-ray Absorption Fine Structure and in Situ X-ray Diffraction Analysis of a High-Performance Cobalt Catalyst Towards the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Transition metal-based composites are one of the most important electrocatalysts because of their rich redox chemistry. The reaction kinetics of a redox couple is dependent on the chemical valence and is a key issue in electrocatalytic performance. In this study, a metallic Co catalyst was synthesized by pyrolyzing Co(OH)(2). The effect of the chemical valence of Co on the oxygen reduction reaction ( ORR) was investigated by comparing the electrocatalytic properties of three Co-based catalysts containing Co-0, Co2+, and Co3+. The electrocatalytic properties were evaluated mainly by linear scan voltammetry (LSV) and a direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) where the Co-based catalysts were used as cathodes. The LSV results show that the ORR peak current density increases with a decrease in chemical valence. The DBFC with the Co-0 cathode exhibits highest power density and good durability. In situ X-ray diffraction combined with in situ X-ray absorption fine structure tests was carried out to reveal the dynamic microstructure evolution of the Co-0 cathode during ORR. The in situ results clearly demonstrate the evolution of metallic Co to Co(OH) (2) and then to CoOOH during the ORR.

Tuning Interaction Between Cobalt Catalysts and Nitrogen Dopants in Carbon Nanospheres to Promote Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis

Abstract:N-doped carbon supports are promising to improve reduction degree and dispersion of metal catalysts in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). However, it is a great challenge to reasonably construct desired N dopants on FTS catalysts. Herein, we report the high FTS performance of the Co catalysts supported on N-doped carbon nanospheres synthesized by using a facile strategy. Through precisely tailoring the N dopants, we discover that the interaction between cobalt catalysts and supports is significantly strengthened via donation electron function of N atoms, especially for pyrrolic N. It improves the dispersion of cobalt species to generate more electron-enriched cobalt sites, which can strongly adsorb CO and accelerate CO dissociation to C*, resulting in the enhanced catalytic activity. In addition, these in turn increase C* concentration on the surface of the active cobalt sites, which is favorable to form a high concentration of chain initiators CH2 to stimulate carbon-chain growth, inducing the high selectivity towards the C5(+) products in FTS. Accordingly, the Co/NCS-500 catalyst with the high content of pyrrolic N presents the high FTS activity and C5(+) selectivity. Our work provides a new avenue in rational development of other related heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:In the realm of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), the escalating cost of cobalt has spurred interest in Co-Fe bimetallic catalysts as substitutes for monometallic Co catalysts. Unfortunately, it is difficult to clarify specific functions and interactions of the two phases, as investigating catalysts in a unified dimension of both metal and support is still a challenge. Herein, we realize precise control over synthesizing nitrogen-doped carbon materials supported bimetallic catalysts containing CoFe alloy and Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases. The catalysts are comprehensively characterized to address the above problem by excluding the influence of metal sizes and support properties. Our findings reveal that compared to metallic Co alone and Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases, the Co-Fe interaction in CoFe alloy with electron transfer from Fe to Co optimizes reactant adsorption behaviors through achieving a larger number of strongly adsorbed CO per active site to increase the density of C* adsorbates and a higher surface CO/H 2 ratio to inhibit the hydrogenation of CH x * intermediates for chain termination, as well as an appropriate ability for CO adsorption/ dissociation. These advantages collectively enhance both CO activation and C-C coupling, and consequently, the CoFe/NC (CoFe alloy) catalyst exhibits the superior catalytic performance in the cobalt space–time yield in C 5+ products (3011.2 g C5+ kg Co −1 h −1 ), which surpasses the Co/NC (monometallic Co) and Co + Fe/NC (Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases) by 2.2 times and 2.4 times, respectively. This study serves as a promising route for the development of efficient and low-cost bimetallic catalysts through the strategic arrangement of multiple active phases for various reactions.

Abstract:Cobalt carbide (Co2C) possesses high catalytic efficiency Fischer‐Tropsch synthesis (FTS) while the products selectivity appears sensitive to crystallography geometry. Since the Anderson–Schulz–Flory (ASF) distribution in FTS was broken through fabricating facetted Co2C nanocrystals, yet the underlying mechanism of Co2C crystallization remains unclarified suffering from sophisticated catalyst composition involving promoter agents. Herein, we report the synthesis of high‐purity single‐crystal nanoprisms (Co2C‐p) for highly efficient FTS to lower olefins. Through comprehensive microstructure analysis, e.g. high‐resolution TEM, in situ TEM and electron diffraction, as well as finite element simulation of gas flow field, for the first time we disclosed the full roadmap of forming catalytic active cobalt carbides, starting from reduction of Co3O4 precursor to CoO intermediate, then carburization into Co2C‐s and subsequent ripening growth into Co2C‐p. This gas‐induced engineering of crystal phase provides a new synthesis strategy, with many new possibilities for precise design of metal‐based catalyst for diverse catalytic applications. Abstract:When carbon-containing species are involved in reactions catalyzed by transition metals at high temperature, the diffusion of carbon on or in catalysts dramatically influences the catalytic performance. Acquiring information on the carbon-diffusioninvolved evolution of catalysts at the atomic level is crucial for understanding the reaction mechanism yet also challenging. For the chemical vapor deposition process of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), we recorded in situ the catalyst state (solid and molten) composition as well as near-surface structural and chemical evolution at the cobalt catalyst-tube interface with carbon permeation using aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The nucleation of SWCNTs was linked with an alternating dissolving and precipitating cycle of carbon in catalysts close to the nucleation site. Understanding the dynamics of carbon atoms in catalysts brings deeper insight into the growth mechanism of SWCNTs and facilitates inferring mechanisms of other reactions. The methodologies developed here will find broad applications in studying catalytic and other processes. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:In pursuing cheap and effective oxygen reduction catalysts, the Fe/N/C system emerges as a promising candidate. Nevertheless, the structural transformations of starting materials into Fe- and N-doped carbon catalysts remains poorly characterized under pyrolytic conditions. Here, we explore the evolution of Fe species and track the formation of Fe-N4 site development by employing diverse in-situ diagnostic techniques. In-situ heating microscopy reveals the initial formation of FeOx nanoparticles and subsequent internal migration within the carbon matrix, which stops once FeOx is fully reduced. The migration and decomposition of nanoparticles then leads to carbon layer reconstruction. Experimental and theoretical analysis reveals size-dependent behavior of FeOx where nanoparticles below 7 nm readily release Fe atoms to form Fe-N4 while nanoparticles with sizes >10 nm tend to coalesce and impede Fe-N4 site formation. The work visualizes the pyrolysis process of Fe/N/C materials, providing theoretical guidance for the rational design of catalysts.

Abstract:Fischer–Tropsch synthesis over CoMn oxides is a surface-catalyzed structure-sensitive reaction. Active site changes greatly alter product distribution. The dynamics and essence of the changes in Co species during the reaction have seldom been explored. Herein, multiple characterizations were applied to confirm that two types of active sites, i.e., Co and Co2C, coexist on CoMnO x under the reaction conditions. Apart from the direct participation of carbon species in the reaction, the steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis also suggested the mutual transformation of carbon species in Co2C. The ratio of the two paths altered with the temperature, thus leading to Co2C-rich and Co-rich surfaces at intermediate and high temperatures, respectively. Kinetic calculations and microkinetic modeling showed that Co2C-rich surfaces facilitated CO adsorption and suppressed hydrogen adsorption. This gave high carbon-chain growth activity. The Co-rich surfaces showed high vacancy and hydrogen coverages, lowering the CO activation and CH4 formation energies.

Abstract:In situ studies of catalysts play valuable roles in observing phase transformation, understanding the corresponding surface chemistry and the mechanism of the reaction. In this paper, ceria promoted cobalt oxide was prepared by the calcination method and investigated for the CO oxidation. The microstructure and morphology of CeO2-Co3O4 were investigated by the Scanning Electron Microscope, High-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization. The effect of CeO2 doping on Co3O4 for CO oxidation was characterized by in situ X-ray Diffraction (in situ XRD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS). In situ XRD was carried out under H2 atmosphere to evaluate the redox property of catalysts. The results indicated that the ceria doping can enhance the reducibility of Co2+ and promote the Co3+—Co2+—Co3+ cycle, owing to the oxygen replenish property of CeO2. Furthermore, adsorbed carbonate species on the surface of CeO2-Co3O4 were investigated by in situ-DRIFTS experiment. It was turned out that carbonate species on ceria promoted cobalt oxide catalysts showed different IR peaks compared with pure cobalt oxide. The carbonate species on ceria promoted catalyst are more active, and similar to free state carbonate species with weak bonding to catalyst surface, which can effectively inhibit catalyst inactivation. This study revealed the mechanism of ceria promoting CO oxidation over cobalt oxide, which will provide theoretical support for the design of efficient CO oxidation catalysts.
Preparation of Cobalt Nanocrystals Supported on Metal Oxides To Study Particle Growth in Fischer–Tropsch Catalysts

Abstract:Colloidal synthesis of nanocrystals (NC) followed by their attachment to a support and activation is a promising route to prepare model catalysts for research on structure-performance relationships. Here, we investigated the suitability of this method to prepare well-defined Co/TiO2 and Co/SiO2 catalysts for the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis with high control over the cobalt particle size. To this end, Co-NC of 3, 6, 9, and 12 nm with narrow size distributions were synthesized and attached uniformly on either TiO2 or SiO2 supports with comparable morphology and Co loadings of 2-10 wt %. After activation in H2, the FT activity of the TiO2-supported 6 and 12 nm Co-NC was similar to that of a Co/TiO2 catalyst prepared by impregnation, showing that full activation was achieved and relevant catalysts had been obtained; however, 3 nm Co-NC on TiO2 were less active than anticipated. Analysis after FT revealed that all Co-NC on TiO2 as well as 3 nm Co-NC on SiO2 had grown to ∼13 nm, while the sizes of the 6 and 9 nm Co-NC on SiO2 had remained stable. It was found that the 3 nm Co-NC on TiO2 already grew to 10 nm during activation in H2. Furthermore, substantial amounts of Co (up to 60%) migrated from the Co-NC to the support during activation on TiO2 against only 15% on SiO2. We showed that the stronger interaction between cobalt and TiO2 leads to enhanced catalyst restructuring as compared to SiO2. These findings demonstrate the potential of the NC-based method to produce relevant model catalysts to investigate phenomena that could not be studied using conventionally synthesized catalysts.

Abstract:As a prerequisite elementary step, the reduction of cobalt (Co) oxides to form metallic Co is essential to display activity in heterogeneous catalysis. Nevertheless, the intrinsic principle of phase and morphology evolution for Co oxides and formation mechanism of the active Co site remains unclear. Here, we resolve this decades-long question by using a state-of-the-art in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to elucidate the multi-role of initial crystalline phase and size of Co oxide in modulation of reduction rate, phase and morphology evolution under H 2 atmosphere, by excluding the possible interference from promoter and support. We anticipate that this study enriches current understanding on the surface structure and morphology evolution of Co oxides, and provide reference for rational design of Co-based catalytic material as well as its pretreatment protocol.

Abstract:Converting syngas to hydrocarbons at much lower temperature with high efficiencies, namely aqueous-phase Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, has great potentials. In this article, we synthesized aqueous-stable cobalt nanoparticles for the reaction. The catalyst has an activity of 7.4 × 10−7 molCO gCo−1 s−1 and C5+ selectivity of 40%, which is the best result in cobalt-catalyzed aqueous-phase Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The catalyst is recyclable after reaction. We also characterized the catalyst by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and in-situ infrared observation to study the catalyst reconstruction process and boron contamination.

Abstract:Different low-cost cobalt precursors (acetate, chloride) and thermal treatments (air calcination/H2 reduction versus direct H2-activation) were investigated to alter the interaction between cobalt and silica. H2-activated catalysts prepared from cobalt chloride had large Co0 particles (XRD, chemisorption) formed by weak interactions between cobalt chloride and silica (temperature programmed reduction (TPR), TPR with mass spectrometry (TPR-MS), TPR with extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) techniques) and retained Cl-blocked active sites, resulting in poor activity. In contrast, unpromoted Co/SiO2 catalysts derived from cobalt acetate had strong interactions between Co species and silica (TPR/TPR-MS, TPR-EXAFS/XANES); adding Pt increased the extent of the Co reduction. For these Pt-promoted catalysts, the reduction of uncalcined catalysts was faster, resulting in larger Co0 clusters (19.5 nm) in comparison with the air-calcined/H2-activated catalyst (7.8 nm). Both catalysts had CO conversions 25% higher than that of the Pt-promoted catalyst prepared in the traditional manner (air calcination/H2 reduction using cobalt nitrate) and three times higher than that of the traditional unpromoted Co/silica catalyst. The retention of residual cobalt carbide (observed in XANES) from cobalt acetate decomposition impacted performance, resulting in a higher C1–C4 selectivity (32.2% for air-calcined and 38.7% for uncalcined) than that of traditional catalysts (17.5–18.6%). The residual carbide also lowered the α-value and olefin/paraffin ratio. Future work will focus on improving selectivity through oxidation–reduction cycles.

Abstract:One of the challenges in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is the high reduction temperatures, which cause sintering and the formation of silicates. These lead to pore blockages and the coverage of active metals, particularly in conventional catalyst promotion. To address the challenge, this article investigates the effects of the preparation method, specifically the inverse promotion of SiO2-supported Co catalysts with manganese (Mn), and their reduction in H2 for FTS. The catalysts were prepared using stepwise incipient wetness impregnation of a cobalt nitrate precursor into a promoted silica support. The properties of the catalysts were characterized using XRD, XPS, TPR, and BET techniques. The structure–performance relationship of the inversely promoted catalysts in FTS was studied using a fixed-bed reactor to obtain the best performing catalysts for heavy hydrocarbons (C5+). XRD and XPS results indicated that Co3O4 is the dominant cobalt phase in oxidized catalysts. It was found that with increase in Mn loading, the reduction temperature increased in the following sequence 10%Co/SiO2 < 10%Co/0.25%Mn-SiO2 < 10%Co/0.5%Mn-SiO2 < 10%Co/3.0%Mn-SiO2. The catalyst with the lowest Mn loading, 10%Co/0.25%Mn-SiO2, exhibited higher C5+ selectivity, which can be attributed to less MSI and higher reducibility. This catalyst showed the lowest CH4 selectivity possibly due to lower H2 uptake and higher CO chemisorption.

Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) targeting liquid fuel products is key technology to alleviate the excessive dependence on unsustainable crude oil. Fabrication of highly active phase has long been an attractive topic in the field of Fischer-Tropsch catalysis. However, as a promising active species, the efficient formation of Fe2C phase is inhibited by kinetic barrier via traditional approaches. In this context, we firstly synthesized phase-pure Fe2N nanoparticles on Al2O3, which has similar coordination structure with Fe2C. The in-situ XRD data in time series reveal that pre-existing of interstitial N atoms in Fe2N structure leads to the effective phase transformation to Fe2C at low temperatures (280 °C). The as-prepared catalysts demonstrated highly catalytic activity without any induction period, coupling with a high selectivity of 60wt.% for desired valuable products. In addition, the corresponding structural evolution uncover the determining effect of these electron-rich Fe sites in the Fe2X (N or C) structure on superior performance.
