Abstract:An acid-base bifunctional catalyst was synthesized by treating a natural mixed-metal oxide, serpentine, with sulfuric acid. Catalyst characterization revealed that the number of acidic and basic sites increased after the acid treatment largely due to an increase in surface area. However, stronger acid sites were also introduced by the formation of bridged hydroxyl groups between a Si atom and a heteroatom, as inferred by H NMR and NH3-TPD analysis. Results from SEM-EDS and H-1 NMR suggested that the acid and base sites were in close proximity. Catalytic conversions of carbohydrate-derived bio-oil model compounds were performed over different acid/base catalysts. Eight single bio-oil model compounds and two binary found to be strongly correlated to the number of oxygen containing functional groups in the reactant. The results from the binary mixtures showed that the acid base bifunctional catalyst had the highest activity in aldol condensation reactions. The best deoxygenation performance was also observed with the bifunctional catalyst for the model compounds. Reaction pathways were proposed on the basis of an isotope labeling study. Deoxygenation reactions were found to be promoted by the cooperative catalysis between closely located acid and base sites.mixtures were used. Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis of Cellulose in a Microreactor System Using Hierarchical Zsm-5 Zeolites Treated with Various Alkalis

Abstract:Hierarchical ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared by desilication using NaOH, Na2CO3 and TPAOH with different concentrations under the same treatment conditions. Their structures and acidities were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), N-2 adsorption and desorption (N-2-BET) and ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD). The catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of cellulose to produce aromatics over the hierarchical ZSM-5 catalysts prepared using different alkali treatments was investigated. The alkali treatment by Na2CO3 (0.4 similar to 0.8 M) was much milder than treatment by NaOH, which allowed the desilication process to be highly controllable, resulting in an increase of both the amount and strength of the strong acid sites, and the formation of hierarchical structures combining micro- and mesoporosity. The organic hydroxide TPAOH did not change the pore structure of ZSM-5, but it greatly increased the relative crystallinity. The CFP of cellulose with HZSM-5 produced 35.5% liquid aromatic hydrocarbons and 32.7% coke. The yield of aromatics increased after Na2CO3 treatment but decreased after NaOH treatment. In addition, the yield of coke showed the opposite trend. The highest aromatic yield (38.2%) and lowest coke yield were obtained in the CFP of cellulose with the desilicated zeolite treated with 0.6 M Na2CO3. The increased acidity in hierarchical ZSM-5 treated with Na2CO3 increased the selectivity of highly valuable aromatics, such as benzene, toluene, and xylene, and decreased the selectivity of large aromatics. TPAOH-treated HZSM-5 showed a slightly increased yield of aromatics due to the repair effect of TPAOH, but this treatment did not form a mesoporous structure.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient, low-cost supported catalysts is crucial for directly deoxygenating biomass fatty acids to long-chain olefins. However, additive-free olefin production, by dehydrative decarbonylation from fatty acids, is scarcely conducted owing to competing decarboxylation reactions. Herein, a green and cost-effective strategy is presented to improve the Co-catalyzed dehydrative decarbonylation of stearic acid, which produces a mixture of heptadecenes with yields of up to 41.3 % and a paraffin yield of 14.7 %. Experimental data, along with a detailed catalyst characterization, revealed that the surface CoNx species acted as the dominant active sites. Furthermore, the specific catalytic performance can be attributed to the dense defect sites, abundant vacancies, and mesoporous structures of the N-doped Carbon (NC) support. The as-prepared CoNx/NC catalysts were recovered and reused up to three times without significant deactivation. Additionally, we propose a possible reaction mechanism for fatty acid deoxygenation. This research makes a significant contribution toward advancing the performance of noble-metal-free deoxygenation catalysts for the production of unsaturated compounds in biomass conversions.

Abstract:We herein report a new approach to convert fatty acids to hydrocarbons in near- or supercritical water. We tested several different metal salts, bases, and high-surface-area supported metal catalysts for activity toward deoxygenation of palmitic acid in a hydrothermal reaction medium. Two heterogeneous catalysts, 5% platinum on activated carbon (Pt/C) and 5% palladium on activated carbon (Pd/C), proved to be very effective for hydrothermal deoxygenation of palmitic acid. The reactions were done in water with no added H-2. The catalysts can be reused without significant activity loss, and the selectivity was more than 90% toward pentadecane, the deoxygenation product. We examined the effect of the catalyst loading, reactant loading, batch holding time, and reaction temperature on the Pt/C-catalyzed deoxygenation rate. The results show that the reaction is first-order in palmitic acid, and the rate constants displayed Arrhenius behavior with an activation energy of 79 kJ mol(-1).

Abstract:In the present research, a series of metal oxides were employed to investigate the role of varied acid-base site on kinetics and mechanism for catalytic fast pyrolysis of cellulose using TG-MS and Py-GC/MS. The results showed that the modulation of acidity-to-basicity value via altering metal oxides constituents significantly affected the transformation pathway for cellulose pyrolysis. Higher acidity-to-basicity ratios accelerated the proceeding of deoxygenation process, wherein 39.4% aromatics and 34.7% aliphatic hydrocarbons were achieved using Al2O3 (acidity-to-basicity value of 1.38) at 750 °C with a catalyst/cellulose mass ratio of 15:1. In comparison, lowering acidity-to-basicity ratios mainly facilitated the ketonization and aldol condensation, therefore over 70% ketones was attained in the case of CaO catalysis. The kinetic studies further verified the promotional role of acid-base sites on cellulose pyrolysis with apparent activation energy as low as 33.72 kJ/mol, in comparison with that of cellulose pyrolysis without adding catalysts. From another aspect, the composite metal oxides with better porous structures contributed to deoxygenation conversion for the production of aromatics and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Moreover, plausible reaction pathway for cellulose pyrolysis over metal oxides was proposed. This work would provide a good reference for the realization of product regulation from cellulose pyrolysis via adjusting acid-base sites in metal oxides.

Abstract:Mesoporous materials possess a hexagonal array of uniform mesopores, high surface areas, and moderate acidity. They are one of the important catalysts in the field of catalytic pyrolysis. In this paper, mesoporous materials of Al-MCM-41, La-Al-MCM-41, and Ce-Al-MCM-41 were synthesized, characterized, and tested as catalysts in the cellulose catalytic pyrolysis process using a fixed bed pyrolysis reactor. The results showed that mesoporous materials exhibited a strong influence on the pyrolytic behavior of cellulose. The presence of these mesoporous molecular sieve catalysts could vary the yield of products, which was that they could decrease the yield of liquid and char and increase the yield of gas product, and could promote high-carbon chain compounds to break into low-carbon chain compounds. Mesoporous molecular sieve catalysts were benefit to the reaction of dehydrogenation and deoxidation and the breakdown of carbon chain. Further, La-Al-MCM-41 and Ce-Al-MCM-41 catalysts can produce more toluene and 2-methoxy-phenol, as compared to the non-catalytic runs.

Abstract:Selectively breaking the C-O bonds within biomass during catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) is desired, but extremely challenging. Herein, we develop a series of metal-oxide nanocomposites composed of W, Mo, Zr, Ti, or Al. It is demonstrated that the nanocomposites of WO3-TiO2-Al2O3 exhibit the highest deoxygenation ability during CFP of lignin, which can compete with the commercial HZSM-5 catalyst. The nanocomposites can selectively cleave the C-O bonds within lignin-derived phenols to form aromatics by direct demethoxylation and subsequent dehydration. Moreover, the nanocomposites can also achieve the selective breaking of the C-O bonds within xylan and cellulose to form furans by dehydration. The Brønsted and Lewis acid sites on the nanocomposites can be responsible for the deoxygenation of lignin and polysaccharides, respectively. This study provides new insights for the rational design of multifunctional catalysts that are capable of simultaneously breaking the C-O bonds within lignin and polysaccharides.

[Influence of ZSM-5(38)/Al-MCM-41 Composite Molecular Sieve Catalysts on Pyrolysis of Cellulose].

Abstract:Pyrolysis of cellulose with different catalysts has been conducted in a fixed-bed reactor. Micro-mesoporous composite molecular sieves of ZSM-5(38)/A1-MCM-41 with different Si/A1 ratios were prepared under hydrothermal conditions. With powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), the catalyst samples were characterized. GC-MS was used to analyze the bio-oil composition. The effects of catalysts on the pyrolysis product yields were investigated and the results were compared with the results of experiments performed without catalyst under the same pyrolitic conditions. The presence of the catalysts decreased the liquid yield, while increased the moisture content. The major improvement in the quality of bio-oil with the use of catalysts was the increase of DL-2,3-Butanediol. ZSM-5(38)/A1-MCM-41(20) favored the formation of phenol and 2-methoxy-phenol. In addition, these catalysts were all benefit for the generation of small molecular compounds. Also, it was found that ZSM-5(38) was better for the production of C4-C5 compounds. And micro-mesoporous composite molecular sieves mainly promoted the production of C6-C8 compounds.

Abstract:Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass-spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) was employed to achieve fast pyrolysis of cellulose and on-line analysis of the pyrolysis vapors. Three sulfated metal oxides (SO42-/TiO2, SO42-/ZrO2 and SO42-/SnO2) were prepared and used for catalytic cracking of the pyrolysis vapors. The distribution of the pyrolytic products was significantly altered by the catalysts. Those important primary pyrolytic products, such as levoglucosan and hydroxyacetaldehyde, were significantly decreased or even completely eliminated. Meanwhile, the catalysis increased three light furan compounds (5-methyl furfural, furfural and furan) greatly. In regard to the selectivity of the three catalysts, the SO42-/SnO2 was the most effective catalyst for obtaining 5-methyl furfural, while the SO42-/TiO2 favored the formation of furfural and the SO42-/ZrO2 favored the formation of furan.

Abstract:TG-FTIR was used to study the pyrolysis of cellulose with catalysts. The three zeolites (HZSM-5, H-β, USY) all inhibit the main decomposition of cellulose and reduced the formation of oxygenated compounds (such as aldehydes, acids and esters) effectively. HZSM-5 has the best deoxygenation activity. USY catalyzes the conversion of oxygenated compounds into isoalkanes, and H-β promotes the formation of CO2 significantly.

Abstract:Reactive catalytic fast pyrolysis (RCFP) of biomass with atmospheric pressure hydrogen is a promising route for the deoxygenation of biomass pyrolysis vapors while retaining high carbon yields in the bio-crude. RCFP process development was accomplished in a bench-scale bubbling fluidized-bed reactor with in situ catalyst configuration. Results are presented that highlight the impact of temperature, biomass weight hourly space velocity (WHSV), reaction pressure, and time on stream on the hydrodeoxygenation of different oxygen-containing species produced during biomass reactive catalytic fast pyrolysis to improve the bio-crude product yield and quality. The highest bio-crude and C4+ hydrocarbons yield was 46.5 wt % on a carbon basis. The optimal temperature range for RCFP is 450-475 degrees C; the biomass WHSV should be kept low, around 0.6 h(-1) in this reactor system, to produce a low oxygen content bio-crude (7.2 wt %), and improvements in the bio-crude yield and quality based on increased pressure are less significant beyond 2.7 bar. The product composition varies by at most 10% for up to 3.5 h' time on stream (biomass-to-catalyst ratio of 2.6 g g(-1)), indicating a stable catalyst activity for hydrodeoxygenation.

Abstract:An amorphous carbon based catalyst was prepared by carbonation and sulfonation of several typical biomass materials, including glucose, microcrystalline cellulose, sugarcane bagasse, eucalyptus, switchgrass and microalgae. Preliminary experimental results on cellobiose hydrolysis indicated that the catalyst prepared from glucose exhibited the highest catalytic activity. Thus, methods, including SEM, XRD, FT-IR, NH3-TPD and elemental analysis, were employed to characterize the catalyst before and after sulfonation. Compared with other conventional solid acid catalysts, the catalyst bearing -SO3H, -COOH, and -OH groups exhibited remarkable activity in the hydrolysis of beta-1,4-glycosidic bonds and no other by-reactions were detected in further hydrolysis experiments. After the hydrolysis reaction, the solid acid catalyst could be readily separated from the saccharide solution for reuse without any significant loss of activity.
Cascade Deoxygenation Process Integrating Acid and Base Catalysts for the Efficient Production of Second-Generation Biofuels

Abstract:An innovative cascade deoxygenation concept coupling the thermal pyrolysis of lignocellulose with two consecutive (acidic and basic) catalytic beds in a single reactor has been developed. Thereby, thermal pyrolysis vapors produced by pyrolysis of acid-washed wheat straw have been upgraded by combining an acidic ZrO2-supported ZSM-5 zeolite and a basic K-grafted USY zeolite, both being prepared in technical form by extrusion with attapulgite binder. Investigation of the different coupling alternatives has shown that the most efficient strategy relies on passing the pyrolysis vapors first by the acid catalyst followed by the basic one in a fixed-bed reactor arrangement. In this way, an enhanced degree of bio-oil deoxygenation is achieved since the K/USY catalyst promotes the occurrence of both aldol condensation and ketonization reactions, thus leading to further bio-oil upgrading by removal of oxygen in the form of CO2 and H2O while affording the formation of C–C bonds. Moreover, this second basic catalyst promotes the further conversion of the oligomers still present in the bio-oil. Accordingly, the sequential integration of the two catalytic systems leads to a clear synergetic effect, improving the efficiency of the bio-oil deoxygenation process and affording the production of liquid organic fractions with oxygen content as low as 12 wt % and energy yield of 32% regarding the raw lignocellulosic biomass.

Catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass: Selective deoxygenation to balance the quality and yield of bio-oil

Abstract:Firstly, the operating conditions were screened for biomass pyrolysis in a fixed bed with respect to higher oil yield. A temperature of 600 °C with an N2 flow of 80 ml/min exhibited the highest bio-oil yield. Then, the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass with various catalysts (Al2O3, CaO, MgO, CuO, Fe2O3, NiO, ZnO, ZrO2, TiO2, HZSM-5 and MCM-41) was studied to identify the selective deoxygenation method with respect to improve bio-oil quality with smaller drop in bio-oil yield. With the addition of CaO, the oxygen was mainly removed in the form of CO2, while, in other cases, more oxygen was removed in the form of H2O. Furthermore, more decarboxylation or less dehydration is better for the balance between yield and deoxygenation amount, and the preferred decarboxylation would lead to a higher pH and lower moisture content of bio-oil.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of cellulose to liquid fuel and highly valuable platform chemicals remains a critical and challenging process. Here, bismuth-decorated β zeolite catalysts (Bi/β) were exploited for highly efficient hydrolysis and selective oxidation of cellulose to biomass-derived glycolic acid in an O2 atmosphere, which exhibited an exceptionally catalytic activity and high selectivity as well as excellent reusability. It was interestingly found that as high as 75.6% yield of glycolic acid over 2.3 wt% Bi/β was achieved from cellulose at 180 °C for 16 h, which was superior to previously reported catalysts. Experimental results combined with characterization revealed that the synergetic effect between oxidation active sites from Bi species and surface acidity on H-β together with appropriate total surface acidity significantly facilitated the chemoselectivity towards the production of glycolic acid in the direct, one-pot conversion of cellulose. This study will shed light on rationally designing Bi-based heterogeneous catalysts for sustainably generating glycolic acid from renewable biomass resources in the future.

Abstract:To enhance the quality of raw bio-oil derived from the pyrolysis of biomass, hydrogen-rich reactants such as waste plastics, cooking oils, and soap stock are frequently incorporated into the fast catalytic co-pyrolysis (co-CFP) of biomass. Nevertheless, widespread uses of acids, bases, and zeolite catalysts must address concerns such as easy to coke, regeneration challenges, and environmental impacts. In this study, one green carbon catalyst is derived from nanocellulose (NCCC) and then firstly applied to co-pyrolyze the Douglas Fir (DF), a typical lumber species in North America, together with low-density polyethylene (LDPE), a commonly used plastic. The use of NCCC during feedstock co-pyrolysis boosted the formation of aromatics, particularly the mono-aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) in bio-oil and H 2 -rich gaseous products, with a selectivity of H 2 to 65 vol.%, nearly double the selectivity without catalysts. Even after five consecutive applications, the NCCC still displays good catalytic effectiveness in the co-pyrolysis: its selectivity for H 2 in gaseous products (48 area%) after five-time usage is virtually equal to that without catalysts (46 area%). Moreover, the mechanism of the NCCC application was investigated by applying the NCCC in a co-pyrolysis of LDPE and DF, along with their individual pyrolysis at temperatures ranging from 450 to 800 °C. This research investigated the potential catalytic impacts of NCCC in co-CFP process, aiming to provide an affordable, eco-friendly heterogeneous catalyst to replace existing acid/base catalysts in the conversion of biomass.

Abstract:Producing valuable fuel-ranged hydrocarbons from cellulosic biomass is an effective approach to addressing potential energy issues. However, the cellulosic-derived bio-oil may contain carboxylic acid components that contribute to the unfavorable acidic and corrosive nature, which necessitates upgrading through the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) treatment using heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we performed reactive force-field molecular dynamics (ReaxFF-MD) to study the hydrogenolysis, dehydrogenation and decarboxylation mechanisms of the acetic acid model compound on the Ni-based catalyst. Comparative analysis of the activation of C–O and C = O bonds was presented, followed by an examination of the associative desorption of H 2 and the dynamic evolution of main intermediates. Furthermore, the conversion pathways of key intermediates were determined and four main pathways for ethanol generation and the temperature-response mechanism for coking formation were proposed. This mechanism diagram explains the strong effects of a hydrogen environment in biomass-related reactions, highlighting the dynamic mechanism of selective hydrogenation and deoxygenation of carbon–oxygen bonds.

Abstract:In situ catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of biomass was conducted with base or acid catalysts in a bench-scale fluidized bed pyrolyzer. Complete mass balances were performed, allowing for quantitatively investigating the catalytic impacts on the final bio-oil composition. Acidic catalysts exhibited relatively higher activities for decomposition of sugar and pyrolytic lignin, dehydration, decarbonylation, and coke formation, as relative to base catalysts. Carbon balances revealed that a significant amount of carbon in bio-oil was transformed to coke during CFP. Due to the decrease in the bio-oil yield during CFP, significantly less energy was recovered in CFP products than in control fast pyrolysis products. CFP was also performed in micropyrolyzer and the results were compared with those in the bench-scale reactor to determine the consistency across the experimental systems. Different from the bench-scale pyrolyzer, the basic catalyst more strongly influenced the micropyrolyzer products and the discrepancies suggest a more rapid deactivation of the basic catalyst.

Abstract:Cellulose is one of the main components of terrestrial biomass. In this study, a zeolite catalyst (ZSM-5) was used to catalyze the pyrolysis of cellulose. The components produced during pyrolysis were tested by Py-GC/MS, and the pyrolysis mechanism was analyzed by density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that furans and sugars were the primary pyrolysis products. After catalytic pyrolysis, the furfural content was significantly lower than that of non-catalytic pyrolysis. However, the yield of aromatic hydrocarbons increased significantly, especially benzene, which increased from almost zero to 13.04%. DFT further explored the specific reaction pathway of catalytic pyrolysis. It was found that under the catalysis of ZSM-5, the catalyst directly participated in most cellulose pyrolysis reactions. Also, the electrophilicity of acid sites in the reaction system played an important role. Therefore, the catalysis of the molecular sieve can significantly reduce the energy barrier of each path. In generating aromatic hydrocarbons, the decarbonylation reaction and dehydration reaction of furfural can be completely catalyzed, thereby increasing the reaction rate of generating aromatic hydrocarbons. Some deoxygenation steps occurred during the reaction, which made the catalytic pyrolysis reaction easier to develop, and improved the bio-oil quality.

Abstract:The selective conversion of cellulose to gluconic acid under mild conditions is challenging as it has abundant intra‐and inter‐molecular hydrogen bonds that protect the β‐1,4‐glycosidic bonds and make it intrinsically recalcitrant to depolymerize. Au‐Pd/TiO2 and Au‐Pt/TiO2 catalysts prepared by sol immobilization method without pre‐treatment are active and selective for the oxidation of glucose and cellobiose to gluconic acid under base‐free conditions. Important preparation parameters are the pre‐treatment of the catalyst and the metal ratio. The optimized catalyst provided a good yield of gluconic acid from cellobiose and has opened up a new catalyst system for cellobiose conversion in terms of a heterogeneous catalyst. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry
