Abstract:A new water-soluble cyclotriveratrylene (WCTV) was designed and synthesized, and benzyldimethyldodecylammonium chloride (G) was chosen as the guest molecule to construct a supra-amphiphile by the host–guest interaction between WCTV and G in water, which is pH responsive. The supra-amphiphiles self-assembled into vesicles in water. When the pH of the solution was below 7.0, the supra-amphiphile disassociated, and the vesicles collapsed. Then, the pH-responsive self-assembly system was utilized for controlled drug release.

Abstract:The interactions between a host, water-soluble corona[n]-arene (S6-CAP), and a series of guests, bisquaternary ammonium derivatives (CnDAs), in water, were investigated. The host and guest can form 1:1 host-guest complex. Their binding constants decrease as the alkyl length of CnDAs increases, which can be tunable ranging from 103 to 106 M-1. The binding processes are mainly entropy-driven, while the enthalpy changes also play an important role in enhancing the host-guest interactions. In addition, a supra-amphiphile was fabricated with S6-CAP and a normal surfactant bearing bisquatemary. ammonium (C4R). The S6-CAP.C4R complex forms micellar aggregates in water, and the system possesses better assembling activity and dilution stability than its building block C4R. This study enriches the families of supra-amphiphiles with a new architecture, and employing such a supra-amphiphile in biofunctional materials is highly anticipated.

Abstract:A novel deep-cavity calixarene, p-[1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]calix[8]arene 1 was synthesized and its complexation with aromatic compounds was examined, Reaction of p-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]phenol 2 with paraformaldehyde under various conditions only resulted in p-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]calix[8]arene 3, and no corresponding calix[4]arene and calix[6]arene were detected, Removal of the methyl in the ether groups of 3 afforded 1 in 80% yield, Solubilization, fluorescence and photochemical probe studies demonstrated that 1 forms inclusion complexes with a variety of aromatic compounds in polar non-aqueous solutions.

Abstract:The first cationic water-soluble pillar[7]arene CWP7 was prepared. H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and MALDI-TOF-MS were performed to provide converging evidences of the structure of obtained CWP7. Host guest complexation between this novel pillar[7]arene-based host and sodium pyren-1-olate guest G was fully investigated in aqueous solution. Increased fluorescence intensity was observed during the inclusion complexation. Driven by the cooperativity of electrostatic interactions, pi-stacking interactions and hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions, the guest penetrated into the cavity of CWP7 to form a pseudorotaxane-type inclusion complex with relatively high binding affinity. Abstract:A novel host-guest recognition motif based on a water-soluble pillar[7]arene (WP7) and a 2,7-diazapyrenium salt (DMDAP) was prepared. According to the integrated results of H-1 NMR, 2D NOESY, UV-vis spectroscopy and fluorescence titration experiments, we demonstrated that the molecular recognition of WP7 to DMDAP in water not only has high association constant but also has pH-responsiveness. Subsequently, we took advantage of this molecular recognition motif to fabricate a supra-amphiphile based on WP7 and an amphiphilic 2,7-diazapyrenium derivative DAPAC. Its controllable self-assembly in water was also investigated by means of TEM and DLS techniques.

Abstract:Supramolecular macrocycles with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior have received extensive attention. Exploring new macrocyclic receptor to achieve tunable LCST behavior is important for the construction and application of many biorelevant materials. Here we report the first amphiphilic water-soluble thermo-responsive biphen[3]arene bearing tri(ethylene oxide) groups, which shows good LCST behavior in water. The LCST behavior of this macrocyclic receptor in aqueous solution is tunable by changing its concentration or addition of K+. Due to the unique topological structure of biphen[3]arene, the cloud-point temperature of H in 0.500 mM aqueous solution is found to be 26.7 °C, providing an exciting and new design that can be used in many biorelevant fields.

Abstract:We report the efficient and scalable synthesis and molecular-recognition properties of novel and water-soluble S-6-corona[3] arene[3] pyridazines. The synthesis comprises a one-pot nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction between diesters of 2,5-dimercaptoterephthalate and 3,6-dichlorotetrazine followed by the inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction of the tetrazine moieties with an enamine and exhaustive saponification of esters. The resulting S-6-corona[3] arene[3] pyridazines, which adopt a 1,3,5-alternate conformation in the crystalline state, are able to selectively form stable 1: 1 complexes with dicationic guest species in water with association constants ranging from (1.10 +/- 0.06) x 10(3)m(-1) to (1.18 +/- 0.06) x 10(5) m(-1). The easy availability, large cavity size, strong and selective binding power render the water-soluble S-6-corona[3] arene[3] pyridazines useful macrocyclic hosts in various disciplines of supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract:A photoresponsive ternary host-guest molecular recognition motif between cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), the 1,1-dimethyl-4,4-bipyridinium dication (DMV2+) and an azobenzene derivative (trans-2) in water was applied in this paper to construct a cross-linked supramolecular polymer. Various characterization methods were adopted to prove the formation of the polymer, such as H-1 NMR, DOSY, specific viscosity measurements, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Additionally, the tetraphenylethylene moiety was incorporated into this system and the aggregation induced emission (AIE) properties of the supramolecular polymer were also investigated.

Abstract:A novel molecular recognition motif was built between a neutral water soluble pillar[5]arene and decyltrimethylammonium bromide in water. Its thermal-controlled complexation with G1 in water was investigated. Furthermore, based on this new thermal responsive host-guest recognition motif, we further constructed a supramolecular amphiphile between this pillar[5]arene and a trimethylammonium bromide derivative containing an azobenzene group at the other end. This supramolecular amphiphile showed triply-responsiveness, that is, thermal responsiveness of the host-guest complex, photo responsiveness of the azobenzene group and chemical-responsiveness by adding beta-CD.
