Abstract:A novel deep-cavity calixarene, p-[1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]calix[8]arene 1 was synthesized and its complexation with aromatic compounds was examined, Reaction of p-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]phenol 2 with paraformaldehyde under various conditions only resulted in p-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]calix[8]arene 3, and no corresponding calix[4]arene and calix[6]arene were detected, Removal of the methyl in the ether groups of 3 afforded 1 in 80% yield, Solubilization, fluorescence and photochemical probe studies demonstrated that 1 forms inclusion complexes with a variety of aromatic compounds in polar non-aqueous solutions.

Abstract:The AM1 and INDO/SCI method were used to, study supra-molecular complexes composed of octahydroxy calix[4]arenes and monosaccharides and pyrimidine derivatives. It was shown that the host performs a better molecular recognition to mono-saccharides. especially to the erythrose by the CH-pi, interaction but there is almost no pi-pi interaction between the host and the pyrimidine which exists in the pyrimidine derivative when H is substituted by -COOH, and the "on-off" molecular switching can be designed by this. The reason of red-shift for UV absorption peaks of the complexes compared to that of the host was discussed.

Abstract:25,25',27,27'-Bis(1, 3-dioxypropane)-bis(5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butylcalix[4] arene-26, 28-diol) (4) and 25, 25', 27, 27'-bis(1, ,4-dioxybutane)-bis (5, 11, 17, 23-tetra-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-26, 28-diol) (5) were sjnthesized by the reaction of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene (1) with preorganized 25, 27-bis (3-bromoproxyl) calix [4] arene-26, 27-diol (2) and 25, 27-bis(3 - bromobutoxyl) calix[4]arene-26, 27-diol (3) in the presence of K2CO3 and KI. Compounds 4 and 5 were characterized with X-ray analysis and the selectivity of 4 and 5 toward K+ over other alkali metal ions, alkaline metal ions as well as NH4+ were investigated with an ion-selective electrode.

Abstract:Presented in this paper are the practical synthesis and conformational structure of hydrazo-bridged homo calix[4] arenes. The step-wise fragment coupling method based on the nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 2,6-dihydrazinylpyridine with 6-alkoxy-2,4-dichlorotriazine afforded effectively hydrazo-linked homo calix[2] pyridine[3] triazines. The exhaustive methylation of -NHNH-linkages led to lipophilic macrocycles, while the introduction of a THP-protected triglyme moiety on a triazine ring produced a water soluble hydrazo-bridged homo calix[2] pyridine[2] triazine. The acquired hydrazo-bridged homo calix[4] arenes adopted a cone conformational structure with two nitrogen atoms of the hydrazine linkage forming respectively a conjugation system with pyridine and triazine rings. The unique macrocyclic conformation and multidentate binding sites would render hydrazo-bridged homo calix[2] pyridine[2] triazines powerful hosts in molecular recognition and self-assembly.

Abstract:Functionalised dialkoxy-substituted tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine macrocycles 6 have been readily synthesised by the fragment coupling approach using methyl 3,5-dihydroxy-4-alkoxybenzoates and cyanuric chloride as the starting materials under very mild conditions. AlCl3-mediated deallylation and debenzylation reactions afforded the lower-rim dihydroxy-substituted tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine derivatives 11 and 13 in good yields. Although dialkoxy-substituted tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine macrocycles are fluxional in solution on the NMR spectroscopy timescale, they adopt a symmetric or slightly distorted 1,3-alternate conformation with the bridging oxygen atoms conjugated with the triazine rings. The dihydroxylated tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine 13b, which gives a mixture of monomer and dimer in solution according to a diffusion NMR spectroscopy study, adopts a 1,3-alternate conformation and forms a cyclic tetrameric assembly in the solid state due to the formation of intermolecular hydrogen-bonding networks. This dihydroxylated macrocyclic host molecule, a hydrogen-bond donor macrocycle with a V-shaped cleft, interacts with 2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4'-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline guests. Although in solution they form the corresponding 1:1 complexes with binding constants ranging from 37.7 to 213 M-1, 2:2 host-guest complexes were observed in the crystalline state. Hydrogen-bonding interactions, along with other non-covalent interactions, such as lone-pair-electron-pi and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions, were found to be the driving force for the formation of host-guest complexes.

Abstract:A novel calix[4]arene derivative, 26,28-bis(cyanomethoxy)-25,27-dihydroxycalix[4]arene (1), was synthesized and its crystal structure has been determined. The crystals, obtained by recrystallization from acetone, are triclinic, space group P-1, with a=10.1160(17)Å, b=11.996(2)Å, c=13.148(2)Å, and α=63.331(3)°, β=74.392(4)°, γ=85.077(4)°. As compared with a similar compound, 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-26,28-bis(cyanomethoxy)-25,27-dihydroxycalix[4]arene (2), compound 1 shows a different configuration of the 1,3-bis(cyanomethoxy) groups attached to the lower rim.

Abstract:The synthesis and crystal structure of a novel calix[8)arene ester are reported herein. The calix[8]arene ester derivative has been characterized by IR, NMR and X-ray crystal analysis. The X-ray structure analysis revealed that the 8 phenolic hydroxy groups of the calix(8]arene have been substituted by 4 diethyl dibromomalonate molecules with each two adjacent hydroxy oxygen atoms attached to a bridge diethyl malonate.

Abstract:A series of novel calix[5]arenes 5 containing one 1,8-dimethoxytriptycene moiety were synthesized through an efficient fragment coupling strategy. The subsequent demethylation of 5 with BBr(3) in dry dichloromethane gave the calix[5]arenes 6. Debutylation of both 5a-b and 6a-b with AlCl(3) resulted in the same products 7a-7b. The structural studies revealed that all of the macrocyclic compounds have well-defined structures with fixed cone conformations in both solution and solid state. Moreover, it was also found that the triptycene-derived calix[5]arenes could encapsulate small neutral molecules in the solid state.

Abstract:A new compound, 25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-di(hydroxyethoxy) calix[4] arene, was obtained by the reaction of calix[4]arene with iodoethanol. Its structure was characterized by IR, UV, MS, H-1 NMR and (13) C NMR spectra. The coordination behavior of the product with 4 kinds of rare earth metal( II ) nitrates in acetonitrile was studied by using fluorescence spectrometry. The stability constants (1gKs) of the complexes of the product with rare earth metal( II ) nitrates and the Gibbs free energy change(-DeltaGdegrees) of the coordination reactions were calculated according to the modified Hilderbrand-Benesi equation. The results indicated that the coordination ability of the product with rare earth metal( II ) nitrates were stronger.

Abstract:Starting from both the bridging nitrogen atom-functionalized and the upper rim-functionalized N,O-bridged calix[1]arene[4]pyridine reactants, different types of heteracalixaromatics-C-60 dyads and triads of varied spacers were expediently synthesized using mainly the click reaction as the key step. By means of various spectroscopic methods, the heteracalixaromatics-C-60 dyads and triads obtained have been shown to form intramolecular self-inclusion complexes rather than oligomers or polymers in solution because of a flexible spacer in between the heteracalixaromatic ring and C-60 moiety. The current study, coupled with previous investigations, would provide the guideline for the construction of supramolecular fullerene motifs based on molecular design of the dyads and triads.

Abstract:The solution and solid state structures of 1,3-dibenzylamino calix[4]arene were investigated via NMR and X-ray crystallography for MeCN, ethanol, hexane, THF, chloroform and toluene solvents. Analysis of the obtained structures show a symmetric flattening/pinching of the calixarene for solvents with a roughly cylindrical shape (MeCN, ethanol, hexane) and an asymmetrical flattening of the cone for more anisotropic, flat solvents, such as THF or toluene. Due to the deviation from planarity of the N2O2 fragment in the latter case, these solvents might be best suited for the preparation of octahedral or tetrahedral metal complexes, while the former would be more suitable for the preparation of square-planar complexes.

Abstract:A new facile method of synthesis of calix[4]arene amide via the aminolysis of the calix[4]arene esters was reported. One ethyl ester of the compound ( 2 ) was aminolysized byn-butylamine. The crystal structure of compound ( 1 )shows that one ethyl ester of compound ( 1 ) enters into thecavity of another compound ( 1 ) forming a long chainhost-guest supramolecule. From the 2D NMR data, the compound( 1 ) does not assemble in THF or CHCl 3 solution. The CH-π interaction and crystallization energy might be theimportant driving forces for forming the self-assembledcalix[4]arene.

Abstract:A series of p-tetra-tert-butyl calix[4]arene derivatives with alkyl guanidinium or chiral bicyclic guanidinium functionalities were synthesized as the receptors of organic anions. Mono- and di- alkyl guanidinium derivatives were prepared by the reaction of 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,27-(2-aminoethoxy)-26,28-dihydroxy calix[4]arene (1) with methyl isothiourea sulphate. While mono- and di- chiral bicyclic guanicinium derivatives were all obtained via an O-alkylation reaction of p-tetra-tert-butyl calix[4]arene with chloromethyl chiral bicyclic guanidinium (6 or 7) in the presence of anhydrous K2CO3 in acetonitrile, good yields were only observed for mono- substituted derivatives.

Abstract:Functionalized N,O-bridged calix[1]arene[4]pyridines, first examples of the odd-numbered heterocalixaromatics containing mixed heteroatom bridges and mixed aromatic units, have been synthesized from the Pd2(dba)3/dppp-catalyzed 2+3 macrocyclic fragment coupling reaction between readily available staring materials. These novel macrocyclic compounds, which adopted distorted 1,3-alternate conformation in solid state, were powerful host molecules able to form 1:1 complex with fullerene C60 in solution, giving binding constant up to 49,494M−1.

Abstract:Five novel azo calix[4]arenes were reported.The p-aminobenzaldehyde was diazotized with sodium nitrite in aqueous hydrochloride solution.Mono-,bis-,tris- and tetrakis(p-formylphenyl)azo calix[4]arenes (including proximal and distal isomers) were obtained respectively by diazo-coupling in different molar ratio to calix[4]arene (1) under pH=7.5-8.5 at 0-5℃.All (p-formylphenyl)azo calix[4]arenes were characterized by 1H NMR,13C NMR,IR,MS (ESIMS) spectroscopies and elemental analysis.
