Abstract:A number of tetraazacalix[ 2] arene[ 2] triazines bearing different substituents on the bridging nitrogen atoms were synthesized efficiently using a fragment coupling strategy. The N- arylation of the parent azacalix[ 2] arene[ 2] triazine afforded tetra( arylaza) calix[ 2] arene[ 2] triazine in 91% yield. The introduction of different substituents on the bridging positions led to the regulation of the cavity of the resulting macrocyclic molecules.

Abstract:A number of homo[2] and homo[4] heterocalix[2]arene[2]triazines were synthesized through a general and good-yielding fragment coupling approach starting from cyanuric halides, aromatic and aliphatic diols, and diamines under very mild reaction conditions. While homo[2] tetraazacalix[2]arene[2]triazine gave a twisted and pinched 1,2-alternate conformer, almost all homo[2] heterocalix[2]arene[2]triazines adopted different partial cone conformations in the solid state. Homo[41] heterocalix[2]arene[2]triazines yielded more diverse conformational structures including partial cone, pinched partial cone, 1,2-alternate and twisted 1.2-alternate, depending on the nature abridging moieties. On the basis of H-1 NMR spectra, homo[2] and homo[4] heterocalix[2]arene[2]triazines were fluxional macrocycles in solution, and they underwent rapid conformation interconversion at different temperatures. Efficient and straightforward nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction and palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions on chlorotriazine rings, and the nucleophilic alkylation reaction on the bridging nitrogen atoms led to the construction of various highly functionalized homo heterocalix[2]arene[2]triazine derivatives.

Abstract:A number of unprecedented homo heteracalix[2]arene[2]triazines were synthesized by means of a fragment coupling approach. Two directional nucleophilic substitution reactions of N-Boc-protected 1,3-dihydrazobenzene with cyanuric acid chloride and 2-butoxy-4,6-dichloro-1,3,5-triazine led to hydrazo-linked trimers, which underwent an efficient macrocyclic condensation reaction with functionalized resorcinol derivatives to afford (NHNBoc)(2),O-2-calix[2]arene[2]triazine macrocycles, which contain a functional group either on the upper rim or the lower rim. The use of 1,3-phenylenediamines instead of resorcinol in the reaction produced (NR)(2),(NHNBoc)(2)-calix[2]arene[2]triazines. Postmacrocyclization modifications such as a nucleophilic substitution reaction of chloro on triazine by amines and the removal of Boc from hydrazo moieties produced homo calix[2]arene[2]triazine derivatives. In the solid state, (NHNR)(2),O-2-bridged calix[2]arene[2]triazines with and without a substituent on the upper rim position and (NMe)(2),(NHNBoc)(2)-calix[2]arene[2]triazine adopted a typical partial cone conformation while the heavily twisted 1,3-alternate conformational structures were observed for both (NHNBoc)(2),O-2-calix[2]arene[2]triazines bearing a functional group on the lower rim position and (NH)(2),(NHNBoc)(2)-calix[2]arene[2]triazine. In solution, all synthesized homo heteracalix[2]arene[2]triazines existed as the mixture of different macrocyclic conformers, which underwent slow interconversions at room temperature relative to the NMR time scale.

Abstract:Novel macrocyclic anion receptors based on the principle of anion-pi interactions were reported. By means of both post-macrocyclization modification protocol and the stepwise fragment coupling approach, functionalized oxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines bearing two other electron-deficient (hetero)aromatic rings on the lower rim were efficiently synthesized. The resulting oxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine macrocycles adopt 1,3-alternate conformation, yielding therefore an expanded electron-deficient cavity or space consisting of two triazine rings and two appending aromatic rings. Spectroscopic titration study showed the selective interaction of the pentafluorophenyl-substituted oxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine with azide and fluoride in solution with the binding constants (K-1:1) ranging from 1.33 x 10(3) to 3.52 x 10(3) M-1.

Abstract:A number of aza- and/or oxo-bridged calix[2]arene[2]triazines have been synthesized through an unusually high yielding and efficient fragment coupling approach starting from cyanuric chloride and resorcinol, 3-aminophenol, m-phenylenediamine, and N,N'-dimethyl-m-phenylenediamine. These novel macrocycles, which belong to the next generation of calixarenes or cyclophanes, form a unique cavity that is resulted from two isolated benzene planes and two bis-heteroatom-conjugated triazine planes in a 1,3-alternate fashion. The nature of the bridging heteroatoms, i.e., combination of the electronic, conjugative, and steric effects of the nitrogen and oxygen atoms, strongly regulates the cavity size, generating a set of fine-tuned cavities in which the distance between two benzene rings at the upper rim ranges from 5.011 to 7.979 A. The multiple intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions among N,N'-dimethylated tetraazacalix[2]arene[2]triazines and among tetraazacalix[2]arene[2]triazines lead to the formation of infinite one-dimensional chain structure and two-dimensional zigzag layered structure, respectively, in the solid state. The ease of preparation and further chemical manipulations, and the readily tunable cavity structures render these aza- and/or oxo-bridged calix[2]arene[2]triazines the unique platforms in the study of supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract:The syntheses and conformational structures of various functionalized tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines were studied. Applying the fragment coupling approach and the post-macrocyclization chemical manipulations, a number of tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines that contain, on the lower rim, one or two aldehyde, ester, carboxylic acid, hydroxymethyl, and aminomethyl functional groups were prepared in moderate to high chemical yields from cheap and commercially available materials. On the basis of X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy, all tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines containing electron-withdrawing group(s) adopted 1,3-alternate conformation both in solution and in the solid state, while tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines bearing hydroxymethyl and aminomethyl substituent(s) existed as pinched or distorted partial cone conformers due to the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bond between hydroxyl or amino group and triazine ring. Abstract:NH-bridged calix[1]arene[3]pyridine and calix[2]arene[2]pyridine were synthesized readily from efficient deprotection of N-Boc groups of NBoc-bridged calix[m]arene[n]pyridine derivatives which were prepared by a macrocyclic coupling reaction between NBoc-linked trimers and 1,3-phenylenediamine. In the solid state, calix[2]arene[2]pyridine adopted the flattened saddle conformation, while NH-bridged calix[1]arene[3]pyridine gave a slightly twisted 1,3-alternate conformer. In both cases, all NH bridges formed partial conjugation with both pyridine and benzene rings, whereas in solution they gave symmetric conformational structures in which the conjugation of bridging NH units with pyridine ring was stronger than with benzene ring. In the presence of NaH, NH-bridged calix[2]arene[2]pyridine reacted efficiently with methyl iodide and allyl bromide to afford the corresponding N-alkylated products in almost quantitative yield. Upon treatment of NH- and NMe-bridged calix[2]arene[2]pyridines with CF3CO2D and CuBr2, deuteration and bromination reactions took place selectively on the pyridine ring, producing respectively the pyridine ring-deuterated and -brominated macrocyclic products.

Abstract:A synthetic approach to the previously unknown thieno[2,3-f][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]azepine derivatives was efficiently accomplished by cycloaddition of the bicyclic 1-aza-2-azoniaallene salts 6, derived from 6,7-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophen-4(5H)-one hydrazones 4, to the triple bond of nitriles, followed by ring enlargement. The X-ray crystal diffraction analysis of the picrate 10a provided affirmative proof for the structural assignment made.

Abstract:Heteroatom-bridged dichlorinated calix[2]arene[2]triazines, which were synthesized from the fragment coupling reactions of cyanuric chloride and various aromatic dinucleophiles, are a unique type of platform for the construction of functional macrocyclic host molecules. Utilizing a very convenient and straightforward nucleophilic displacement reaction of dichlorinated tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine by various chelating group-containing amines, a number of functionalized tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines on the larger rim were efficiently synthesized in good yields. The resulting tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines armed with two 2,2'-bi(pyridinyl)amino or two bis(2-pyridinemethyl)amino groups selectively formed 1:1 complexes with Cu2+ ion through most probably a chelating interaction effect.

Abstract:Oxacalix[2]m-terphenyl[2]triazine, a macrocyclic host molecule of an expanded cavity, was synthesized from 1,3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)benzene and cyanuric chloride using the fragment coupling strategy. Aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction of chlorotriazine moieties with di(2-hydroxyethyl)amine and di(2-pyridylmethyl)amine afforded the corresponding upper-rim functionalized oxacalix[2]m-terphenyl[2]triazines in good yields.

Abstract:Five novel azo calix[4]arenes were reported.The p-aminobenzaldehyde was diazotized with sodium nitrite in aqueous hydrochloride solution.Mono-,bis-,tris- and tetrakis(p-formylphenyl)azo calix[4]arenes (including proximal and distal isomers) were obtained respectively by diazo-coupling in different molar ratio to calix[4]arene (1) under pH=7.5-8.5 at 0-5℃.All (p-formylphenyl)azo calix[4]arenes were characterized by 1H NMR,13C NMR,IR,MS (ESIMS) spectroscopies and elemental analysis.

Abstract:Functionalised dialkoxy-substituted tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine macrocycles 6 have been readily synthesised by the fragment coupling approach using methyl 3,5-dihydroxy-4-alkoxybenzoates and cyanuric chloride as the starting materials under very mild conditions. AlCl3-mediated deallylation and debenzylation reactions afforded the lower-rim dihydroxy-substituted tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine derivatives 11 and 13 in good yields. Although dialkoxy-substituted tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine macrocycles are fluxional in solution on the NMR spectroscopy timescale, they adopt a symmetric or slightly distorted 1,3-alternate conformation with the bridging oxygen atoms conjugated with the triazine rings. The dihydroxylated tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine 13b, which gives a mixture of monomer and dimer in solution according to a diffusion NMR spectroscopy study, adopts a 1,3-alternate conformation and forms a cyclic tetrameric assembly in the solid state due to the formation of intermolecular hydrogen-bonding networks. This dihydroxylated macrocyclic host molecule, a hydrogen-bond donor macrocycle with a V-shaped cleft, interacts with 2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4'-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline guests. Although in solution they form the corresponding 1:1 complexes with binding constants ranging from 37.7 to 213 M-1, 2:2 host-guest complexes were observed in the crystalline state. Hydrogen-bonding interactions, along with other non-covalent interactions, such as lone-pair-electron-pi and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions, were found to be the driving force for the formation of host-guest complexes.

Abstract:A number of hydroxyl-substituted azacalix[4]pyridines were synthesized using Pd-catalyzed macrocyclic "2+2" and "3+1" coupling methods and the protection-deprotection strategy of hydroxyl group. While the conformation of the these hydroxyl-substituted azacalix[4]pyridines is fluxional in solution, in the solid state, they adopted shape-persistent 1,3-alternate conformations. Besides, X-ray analysis revealed that the existence of hydroxy groups on the Para-position of pyridine facilitated the formation of solvent-bridged intermolecular hydrogen bonding for mono-hydroxyl-substituted while partial tautomerization for four-hydroxyl-substituted macrocycles, respectively. Taking the hydroxyl-substituted azacalix[4]pyridines as molecular platforms, multi-macrocycle-containing architectures and functional building blocks were constructed. The self-assembly behavior of the resulting building blocks was investigated in crystalline state.

Abstract:Presented in this paper are the practical synthesis and conformational structure of hydrazo-bridged homo calix[4] arenes. The step-wise fragment coupling method based on the nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 2,6-dihydrazinylpyridine with 6-alkoxy-2,4-dichlorotriazine afforded effectively hydrazo-linked homo calix[2] pyridine[3] triazines. The exhaustive methylation of -NHNH-linkages led to lipophilic macrocycles, while the introduction of a THP-protected triglyme moiety on a triazine ring produced a water soluble hydrazo-bridged homo calix[2] pyridine[2] triazine. The acquired hydrazo-bridged homo calix[4] arenes adopted a cone conformational structure with two nitrogen atoms of the hydrazine linkage forming respectively a conjugation system with pyridine and triazine rings. The unique macrocyclic conformation and multidentate binding sites would render hydrazo-bridged homo calix[2] pyridine[2] triazines powerful hosts in molecular recognition and self-assembly.

Abstract:The lower-rim formylated azacalix[4]pyrimidine underwent transannular Friedel–Crafts and dehydrogenative cross coupling reactions to afford, respectively, 2,4,5,7-tetraaza-9,10-dihydroacridine and -dihydroacridin-9-one containing azacalix[3]aromatics. Dihalogenation of the later compound produced resolvable inherently chiral azacalix[3]aromatics.

Abstract:An efficient strategy for carbazoles and 1,2,4-triarylpyrroles synthesis from anilines and cyclohexanones or acetophenones under transition-metal-free conditions is developed. A variety of disubstituted 9-arylcarbazoles were synthesized in moderate to good yields promoted by KI/I-2 using anilines as the nitrogen and aryl source. Meanwhile, a variety of 1,2,4-triarylpyrroles were also selectively synthesized from anilines and acetophenones in the presence of KI alone.

Abstract:A simple and powerful one-pot reaction method was developed for the synthesis of heteracalixaromatics. In the presence of a base, one-pot macrocyclic condensation reaction between cyanuric chloride and 1,3-phenylene diols and diamines proceeded effectively under very mild conditions to afford a number of functionalised oxygen and nitrogen-bridged calix[2]arene[2]triazines in 33-54% yields. The method was applied in a multigram-scale (14.4 g) preparation of tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine.

Abstract:Mediated by Cu(ClO4)(2), in the presence of K3PO4 under mild conditions, azacalix[1]arene[3]pyridines underwent arene C-H bond amination with a number of sulfonamides, imides, and saccharin to afford the diverse C-N bond forming products. Based on different reactivity between arylcopper(II) and arylcopper(III) compounds toward nitrogen nucleophiles, the reaction proceeded most likely through arene C-H bond metalation via reactive arylcopper(III) intermediates and their binding to nitrogen anions which were derived from deprotonation of acidic N-H bonds of nitrogen nucleophiles of pK(a) (DMSO) < 17.5 followed by reductive elimination. The study not only provides a convenient and straightforward access to functionalized heteracalixaromatics that are not readily obtained by other means but also enriches our understanding of high valent organocopper chemistry.
