Abstract:The changes of structure and oxygen deficiency of Y1Ba2Cu3O7-delta as a function of temperature are studied by dynamical high-temperature x-ray diffraction in air, nitrogen, oxygen, and vacuum (10(-3)Torr). The influence of different atmospheres on the equilibrium between lattice oxygen and absorbed oxygen is found. The relation of oxygen deficiency and structure transition is studied. According to the conclusion about the electron transfer between Cu and O, the relation between the average oxygen hole concentration, n(h), in the Cu-O(2) layer and the structure transition is considered: 0 less-than-or-equal-to delta less-than-or-equal-to 0.25, 0.25 greater-than-or-equal-to n(h) greater-than-or-equal-to 0.125 is the stable region of the superconducting orthorhombic phase, the density of oxygen holes is approximately (1.44 to 0.72) X 10(21) cm-3; 0.25 less-than-or-equal-to delta < 0.5, 0.125 greater-than-or-equal-to n(h) > 0, the transition region of O (orthorhombic) if-and-only-if T (tetragonal); and 0.5 less-than-or-equal-to delta less-than-or-equal-to 1, n(h) = 0, the stable region of nonsuperconducting tetragonal phase. Therefore, the negative double-valence will not always be taken for oxygen anions except for the nonsuperconducting tetragonal phase. The oxygen hole is first related to the oxygen deficiency in YBCO in this paper. In this connection the experimental result of Cu3+ content obtained by the method of iodide reduction has been reasonably explained.
