Abstract:The Sierpiński triangle (ST) is a well-known fractal structure. Synthesis of stable molecular STs with robust covalent linkages is attractive but challenging. Here, we demonstrate the formation of a series of high-quality covalent STs via the on-surface dehydration reaction of 1,3-benzenediboronic acid with the presence of water as an equilibrium regulator at ambient atmosphere. Extended molecular fractals up to third generation are obtained, as disclosed by scanning tunnel microscope. The covalent STs show intriguing bright and dark contrasts irrespective of the fractal generations, which is related with epitaxial relationship of fractal structure to the underlying graphite lattice, as supported by theoretical simulations.

Abstract:Edges and surfaces play indispensable roles in affecting the chemical-physical properties of materials, particularly in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with reduced dimensionality. Herein, we report a novel edge/surface structure in multilayer 1T-TiSe2, i.e., the orthogonal (1 × 1) reconstruction, induced by the self-intercalation of Ti atoms into interlayer octahedral sites of the host TiSe2 at elevated temperature. Formation dynamics of the reconstructed edge/surface are captured at the atomic level by in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and further validated by density functional theory (DFT), which enables the proposal of the nucleation mechanism and two growth routes (zigzag and armchair). Via STEM-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS), a chemical shift of 0.6 eV in Ti L3,2 is observed in the reconstructed edge/surface, which is attributed to the change of the coordination number and lattice distortion. The present work provides insights to tailor the atomic/electronic structures and properties of 2D TMDC materials.

Abstract:Understanding the growth mechanisms of multielement two-dimensional (2D) crystals is challenging because of the unbalanced stoichiometry and possible reconstruction of their edges. Here, we present a systematic theoretical study on the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth mechanism of MoS2. We found that the growth kinetics of MoS2 highly depends on its edge reconstruction determined by concentrations of Mo and S in the growth environment. Based on the calculated energies of nucleation and propagation of various MoS2 edges, we predicted the transition of a MoS2 island growth from a regime of a triangle enclosed by Mo-terminated zigzag edges that are passivated by 50% S (Mo-II edges), to a regime of continuous evolution within a triangle, hexagon, and inverted triangle with 75%-S-terminated edges (S-III edges) and Mo-II edges, and finally to a regime of triangles with Mo-terminated zigzag edges that are passivated by 100% S (Mo-III edges) by tuning the growth condition from Mo-rich to S-rich, which provides a reasonable explanation to many experimental observations. This study provides a general guideline on theoretical studies of 2D crystals' growth mechanisms, deepens our understanding on the growth mechanism of multielement 2D crystals, and is beneficial for the controllable synthesis of various 2D crystals.

Abstract:Fractals are of fundamental importance in science and technology. Theoretical simulations indicate that Sierpiński triangles (STs) possess specific optical and electronic properties. To study their properties and uncover their potential applications, it is necessary to pack STs into large-scale two-dimensional crystalline structures. Here, a series of ordered structures consisting of ST units are successfully constructed on gold surfaces through coordination between 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) benzene molecules and Fe atoms. Crystals of STs are characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy. K-map analysis explains the structural formation mechanism, which is further verified by density functional theory calculations. Abstract:A mechanistic understanding of interactions be-tween atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and their growth substrates is important for achieving the unidirectional alignment of nuclei and seamless stitching of 2D TMD domains and thus 2D wafers. In this work, we conduct a cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) study to investigate the atomic-scale nucleation and early stage growth behaviors of chemical vapor deposited monolayer (ML-) MoS2 and molecular beam epitaxy ML-MoSe2 on a Au(111) substrate. Statistical analysis reveals the majority of as-grown domains, i.e., similar to 88% for MoS2 and 90% for MoSe2, nucleate on surface terraces, with the rest (i.e., similar to 12% for MoS2 and 10% for MoSe2) on surface steps. Moreover, within the latter case, step-associated nucleation, similar to 64% of them are terminated with a Mo-zigzag edge in connection with the Au surface steps, with the rest (similar to 36%) being S-zigzag edges. In conjunction with ab initio density functional theory calculations, the results confirm that van der Waals epitaxy, rather than the surface step guided epitaxy, plays deterministic roles for the realization of unidirectional ML-MoS2 (MoSe2) domains on a Au(111) substrate. In contrast, surface steps, particularly their step height, are mainly responsible for the integrity and thickness of MoS2/MoSe2 films. In detail, it is found that the lateral growth of monolayer thick MoS2/MoSe2 domains only proceeds across mono-Au-atom high surface steps (similar to 2.4 angstrom), but fail for higher ones (bi-Au atom step and higher) during the growth. Our cross-sectional STEM study also confirms the existence of considerable compressive residual strain that reaches similar to 3.0% for ML-MoS2/MoSe2 domains on Au(111). The present study aims to understand the growth mechanism of 2D TMD wafers.

Abstract:Sierpinski triangles up to the fourth order were successfully prepared using 4,4 ''-dicyano-1,1':3',1 ''-terphenyl molecules and Fe or Co atoms with the coexistence of the third molecules (C-60 or MnPc) on a reconstructed Au(111) substrate. Sierpinski triangles could be disturbed and restored by C-60 molecules after annealing at 400 and 360 K, respectively. The dispersed MnPc molecules did not affect the formation of Sierpinski triangles when annealed at high temperatures. The selective adsorption of MnPc molecules at certain holes of Sierpinski triangles was observed.

Abstract:Self-similar fractal structures are of fundamental importance in science, mathematics, and aesthetics. A series of molecular defect-free Sierpiński triangle fractals have been constructed on surfaces recently. However, the highest order of the fractals is only 4 because of the limitation of kinetic growth. Here complete fifth-order Sierpiński triangles with a lateral length of 0.05 μm were successfully prepared in ultrahigh vacuum by a combination of templating and coassembly methods. Fe atoms, 4,4″-dicyano-1,1':3',1″-terphenyl, and 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)benzene molecules were used to build fractals on the reconstructed Au(100)-(hex) surface. The new strategy may be applied to construct various Sierpiński triangles of higher orders.

Abstract:Self-similar fractals are of importance in both science and engineering. Metal-organic Sierpin′ ski triangles are particularly attractive for applications in gas separation, catalysis and sensing. Such fractals are constructed in this study by using 1208 V-shaped 4,400-dicyano-1,10:30,100-terphenyl molecules and Fe atoms on Au(1 1 1), and studied in detail by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Density functional theory calculations are employed to rationalize the invisible Fe atoms in STM images. Abstract:Abstract Reversible transformations between fractals and periodic structures are of fundamental importance for understanding the formation mechanism of fractals. Currently, it is still a challenge to controllably achieve such a transformation. We investigate the effect of CO and CO2 molecules on Sierpiński triangles (STs) assembled from Fe atoms and 4,4′′-dicyano-1,1′:3′,1′′-terphenyl (C3PC) molecules on Au surfaces. Using scanning tunneling microscopy we discover that the gas molecules induce a transition from STs to one-dimensional (1D) chains. Based on density functional theory modelling, we propose that the atomistic mechanism involves the transformation of a stable 3-fold coordination Fe(C3PC)3 motif to Fe(C3PC)4 with an axially bonded CO molecule. CO2 causes the structural transformation through a molecular catassembly process.

Electronic Confining Effects in Sierpiński Triangle Fractals

Abstract:Electron confinement in fractal Sierpinski triangles (STs) on Ag(111) is investigated using scanning tunneling spectroscopy and theoretically simulated by employing an improved two-dimensional (2D) multiple scattering theory in which the energy-dependent phase shifts are explicitly calculated from the electrostatic potentials of the molecular building block of STs. Well-defined bound surface states are observed in three kinds of triangular cavities with their sides changing at a scale factor of 2. The decrease in length of the cavities results in an upshift of the resonances that deviates from an expected inverse quadratic dependence on the cavity length due to the less efficient confinement of smaller triangular cavities. Differential conductance maps at some specific biases present a series of alternative bright and dark rounded triangles preserving the symmetry of the boundary. Our improved 2D multiple scattering model reproduces the characteristics of the standing wave patterns and all features in the differential conductance spectra measured in experiments, illustrating that the elastic loss boundary scattering dominates the resonance broadening in these ST quantum corrals. Moreover, the self-similar structure of STs, that a larger central cavity is surrounded by three smaller ones with a half side length, gives rise to interactions of surface states confined in neighboring cavities, which are helpful for the suppression of the linewidth in differential conductance spectra.

Abstract:In recent years, much progress has been made in aperiodic ordered surface structures such as fractal and quasicrystal that can be synthesized by molecular self-assembly. Here we review the research progress of Sierpinski triangle fractal structures and quasicrystal structures on metal surfaces investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Constructions of Sierpinski triangle fractals with halogen, hydrogen, coordination and covalent bonds were realized on different basal surfaces via changing the precursor types, and complete fifth-order fractals were successfully prepared by a combination of the templating and co-assembly methods overcoming the surface kinetic limitations. Surface molecular quasicrystals were fabricated by utilizing the hydrogen bond between carboxylic acid groups through molecular self-assembly for the first time, and metal-organic coordination quasicrystals were successfully prepared by the coordination between organic molecule and rare-earth atoms.

Abstract:Fractals play an important role in mathematics, aesthetic, science, and engineering. The representative Sierpiński-triangle fractals have been successfully constructed by V-shape molecules in experiments. The molecular Sierpiński triangles formed by molecules with linear backbones have been theoretically predicted but not experimentally discovered. To achieve this goal in the experiment, we used [1,1′;4′,1′′;4′′,1′′′]-quaterphenyl-3,4′′-dicarbonitrile molecules as building blocks and employed cobalt atoms as cements, then successfully obtained metal-organic Sierpiński triangles with an order up to 2 on the Au(111) surface. There are twenty-four types of three-fold coordination nodes formed between the metal atom and organic ligands via coordinate interactions. The coexistence of various nodes is responsible for that the highest order of Sierpiński triangles is limited to 2.

Abstract:Recent studies demonstrate that simple functional molecules, which usually form two-dimensional (2D) crystal structures when adsorbed on solid substrates, are also able to self-assemble into ordered openwork fractal aggregates. To direct and control the growth of such fractal supramolecules, it is necessary to explore the conditions under which both fractal and crystalline patterns develop and coexist. In this contribution, we study the coexistence of Sierpiński triangle (ST) fractals and 2D molecular crystals that were formed by 4,4″-dihydroxy-1,1':3',1″-terphenyl molecules on Au(111) in ultrahigh vacuum. Growth competition between the STs and 2D crystals was realized by tuning substrate and molecular surface coverage and changing the functional groups of the molecular building block. Density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations are used to characterize the process. Both experimental and theoretical results demonstrate the possibility of steering the surface self-assembly to generate fractal and nonfractal structures made up of the same molecular building block.

Abstract:Fractal structures with self-similarity are of fundamental importance in the fields of aesthetic, chemistry and mathematics. Here, by taking advantage of constructs the rational geometry-directed precursor design, we report the construction of two fascinating Platonic solids, the Sierpiński tetrahedron ST-T and the Sierpiński octahedron ST-O, in which each possesses a fractal Sierpiński triangle on their independent faces. These two discrete complexes are formed in near-quantitative yield from the multi-component self-assembly of truncated Sierpiński triangular kernel L1 with tribenzotriquinacene-based hexatopic and anthracene-based tetratopic terpyridine ligands (L3 and L4 ) in the presence of metal ions, respectively. The enhanced stabilities of the 3D discrete structures were investigated by gradient tandem mass spectrometry (gMS2 ). This work provides new constructs for the imitation of complex virus assemblies and for the molecular encapsulation of giant guest molecules.

Abstract:Fractals are a series of intricate patterns with aesthetic, mathematic, and philosophic significance. The Sierpiński triangles have been known for more than one hundred years, but only recently discrete shape-persistent low-generation (mainly ST-1) fractal supramolecules have been realized. Herein, we report a retro-assembly pathway to the nanometer-scale, supra-macromolecular second-generation Sierpiński triangle and its third-generation saturated counterpart (Pascal's triangle). These gigantic triangular assemblies are unambiguously confirmed by NMR, DOSY, ESI-MS, TWIM-MS, TEM, and AFM analyses. Notably, the dense-packed counterions of these discrete triangular architectures could further form supramolecular hydro-gels in water. This work not only provides a fundamental chemical pathway to explore various giant supramolecular constructs and further overcome the synthetic limitation of complicated molecular fractals, but also presents a new type of supramolecular hydro-gels with potential in controlled release applications.

Abstract:Fractals, being “exactly the same at every scale or nearly the same at different scales” as defined by Benoit B. Mandelbrot, are complicated yet fascinating patterns that are important in aesthetics, mathematics, science and engineering. Extended molecular fractals formed by the self-assembly of small-molecule components have long been pursued but, to the best of our knowledge, not achieved. To tackle this challenge we designed and made two aromatic bromo compounds (4,4″-dibromo-1,1′:3′,1″-terphenyl and 4,4‴-dibromo-1,1′:3′,1″:4″,1‴-quaterphenyl) to serve as building blocks. The formation of synergistic halogen and hydrogen bonds between these molecules is the driving force to assemble successfully a whole series of defect-free molecular fractals, specifically Sierpiński triangles, on a Ag(111) surface below 80 K. Several critical points that govern the preparation of the molecular Sierpiński triangles were scrutinized experimentally and revealed explicitly. This new strategy may be applied to prepare and explore various planar molecular fractals at surfaces.

Abstract:Various metastable reconstructions on Si (111) surface, such as 2×2, c2×4, 9×9 and 11×11, were investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Compared with previously published results, the domains of 2×2 and c2×4 reconstructed structures reported were regular and larger; atomically resolved STM images were clearer and more stable. 2 kinds of ring-like structures were observed at domain boundaries of different reconstructions. The formation mechanism of metastable reconstructions was discussed from the viewpoint of their atom density and energy.
