Abstract:The subcomponent self-assembly of 4,6-dihydrazinopyrimidine and o-vanillin/salicylaldehyde with different DyIII salts lead to the formation of linear Dy2 (1−3) and grid-like Dy4 (4) compounds with formulas of [Dy2L(DMF)4(NO3)4]·2DMF (1), [Dy2L2(CH3COO)4(CH3OH)2]·10H2O (2), [Dy2L'2(CH3COO)4(CH3OH)2]·2H2O·2CH3OH (3) and [Dy4Na2L2(μ2-OH)2(PhCOO)8(CH3OH)(H2O)]·CH3CN·2CH3OH·7H2O (4). In all cases, the DyIII ions are nine coordinate but the different features of coordinated solvent molecules and anions result in the diverse coordination geometry in their respective structures. Notably, by introducing various axial coordinating anions with different electronegativity (NO3−, CH3COO− and C6H5COO−), the effective energy barriers were progressively enhanced (52−207 K) in this system. Detailed magnetic studies for these complexes revealed obvious magnetic interactions in complex 1 and clear single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with anisotropy barriers of 52, 56 and 58.4 K for 1−3, respectively. Moreover, we find that the incorporation of the benzoates into the axial position of the DyIII ions in complex 4 leads to the occurrence of two clear distinct relaxation processes, with energy barriers of 94.9 and 207.2 K, respectively. This result presents an example of the effects of axial coordinating anions on the SMM behavior, providing a valid route towards enhancing the slow magnetic relaxation of 4f based SMMs via incorporating diverse coordination anions into the subcomponent self-assembly system.

Abstract:Two mononuclear complexes containing a Dy(III) ion with eight- and nine-coordinate environments have been J successfully synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The coordination spheres of 1 and 2 exhibit the distorted spherical capped square antiprism and square antiprism geometries. Magnetic measurements reveal that both of the complexes show typical single-molecule magnetic behavior, and only complex 2 presents a butterfly hysteresis loop. Ab initio calculations also show the difference of the magnetic anisotropy of the Dy(III) ions in 1 and 2. The relationship between the coordination geometry and the magnetic property is discussed.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Better understanding the determining factors of dynamic magnetic relaxation in polynuclear lanthanide based single‐molecule magnets (SMMs) remains a challenge due to the complexity of such architectures involving interactions between the magnetic centers. To address this issue, two structurally related heterometal DyIII2ZnII2 SMMs, [Zn2Dy2(L)4(Ac)2(DMF)(CH3OH)]·CH3OH·2H2O (1) and [Zn2Dy2(L)4(Ac)2(DMF)2]·4CH3CN (2) (H2L = (E)‐2‐((2‐hydroxy‐3‐methoxybenzylidene)amino)‐4‐methyphenol, DMF = N,N‐Dimethylformamide), are introduced and investigated. Through modifying the auxiliary ligands on one DyIII sites while retaining that on the other DyIII, the intramolecular magnetic interactions and relaxation dynamics in these two heterometallic‐DyIII2ZnII2 SMMs can be tuned, demonstrating dramatically change on the magnet relaxation behavior with energy barrier change from a negligible value for 1 to 305 K for 2. Ab initio calculations reveal that changing the coordination geometries on the DyIII sites can significantly affect the magnetic interactions as well as single‐ion anisotropy. Abstract:One coordination polymer {[Dy(BTTA)1.5(H2O)4.5]n (Dy-1) was successfully obtained via solvo-thermal reaction of Dy(NO3)3⋅6H2O and 2,5-bis-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)terephthalic acid (H2BTTA). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the complex exhibits two-dimensional lay-by-lay structure with one-dimensional channels along b direction, while DyIII ion exhibited as distorted spherical capped square antiprism (C4v) finished by nine oxygen atoms from three BTTA ligands and five water molecules. Magnetic studies show that both of the Orbach and Raman processes contribute to the magnetic relaxation behavior of Dy-1 under low temperature.

Abstract:A series of one-dimensional complexes [Ln(L(1))(3)(HOCH(2)CH(2)OH)](n) (L(1) = 2-furoate anion; Ln = Nd (1), Sm (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5), Er (6)) have been synthesized. The complexes were crystallized in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c and show a chain-like structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Magnetic properties indicate that carboxyl group of 2-furoate mediates different magnetic couplings in light and heavy rare earth complexes, namely, antiferromagnetic interaction between light rare earth ions and ferromagnetic interaction between heavy ones. Noticeably, complex 5 displays a strong frequency dependence of alternating current (AC) magnetic properties. Further magnetic studies show a distribution of a single relaxation process in 5. While 1,10-phenanthroline and phthalate anion (L(2)) were employed, [Dy(2)(L(2))(6)(H(2)O)](n) (7) was isolated by hydrothermal reactions and characterized magnetically. Research results also show the frequency dependence of AC magnetic susceptibilities, although the phthalate anions mediate antiferromagnetic coupling between Dy(III) ions. Further magnetic investigation of a neutral mononuclear complex with the formula [Dy(TTA)(3)(L(3))] (8) (TTA = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate; L(3) = 4,5-pinene bipyridine) suggests that the single-ion magnetic behavior originates the slow relaxation of Dy(III)-containing complexes.

Abstract:Precise control of the crystal field and local symmetry around the paramagnetic spin center is crucial for the design and synthesis of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Herein, three mononuclear Dy(III)-based complexes, ([Dy(LN6)(CH3COO)2](BPh4)(CH2Cl2) (1), [Dy(LN6)(2,6-Cl-4-NO2-PhO)(H2O)2]2(PF6)2(H2O)(2,6-Cl-4-NO2-PhO)2 (2) and [Dy(LN6)(2,6-Cl-4-NO2-PhO)2](BPh4)(CH2Cl2)2 (3) (LN6 = N6-hexagonal plane accomplished by a neutral Schiff base ligand formed from 2,6-diacetylpyridine and ethylenediamine), are successfully isolated. In these complexes, the Dy(III) centers are coordinated with six neutral N atoms from the nonrigid equatorial ligand, while different oxygen-bearing ligands are arranged at the axial positions of the central ions through a gradual regularization of the axial ligands. As a result, the Dy(III) ions in three complexes exhibit various coordination geometries, forming ten-coordinate tetradecahedron for 1, nine-coordinate muffin configuration for 2 and distortedly eight-coordinate hexagonal bipyramid for 3. Magnetic studies reveal that all complexes perform no SIM behaviour under zero dc field, due to the predominant quantum tunneling of the magnetizations (QTM) which can be effectively suppressed by the additional dc fields. Experiments, coupled with theoretical calculations demonstrate that varying local symmetries and coordination geometries are synergistically responsible for the disparities of the QTM and uniaxial anisotropy, resulting in notably different magnetic properties.

Abstract:A dinuclear complex with the formula Dy2L2(H2L)Cl2(EtOH)2 (Dy2) has been synthesized by reacting DyCl3·H2O with a ligand H2L (H2L = N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine)) using ethanol as the solvent. Its crystal structure can be viewed as a dimer of two Dy(III) fragments, where each Dy(III) site shows a N2O6Cl coordination sphere with a pentagonal bipyramid geometry (D5h). Magnetic measurements reveal that Dy2 behaves as a single-ion magnet (SIM) under a zero field. When the field is applied, the ac magnetic susceptibilities show double and triple peaks under high (≥600 Oe) and low (<600 Oe) dc fields, respectively. In contrast to the common double relaxation pathways in SIMs, such multiple and intricate relaxation pathways have not been reported yet in the previous literature. In this work, by experimental analysis of the ac signals, we attribute the three slow relaxation pathways to quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM), intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction and spin reversal, respectively. In addition, ab initio calculations are used to elucidate the magnetic behaviours of Dy2. Overall, our work indicates that the interpretation of the relaxation process using double relaxation pathways is incomplete and difficult in previously reported literature.
Influence of the Different Types of Auxiliary Noncarboxylate Organic Ligands on the Topologies and Magnetic Relaxation Behavior of Zn–Dy Heterometallic Single Molecule Magnets

Abstract:In this work, we first synthesized a Zn–Dy complex, [Zn6Dy2(L)6(tea)2(CH3OH)2]·6CH3OH·8H2O (H2L = N-3-methoxysalicylidene-2-amino-3-hydroxypyridine, teaH3 = triethanolamine, 1), by employing H2L, anhydrous ZnCl2, and Dy(NO3)3·5H2O reacting with auxiliary ligand teaH3 in the mixture of CH3OH and DMF. When teaH3 and the solvent CH3OH in the reaction system of 1 were replaced by the auxiliary ligand 2,6-pyridinedimethanol (pdmH2) and the solvent MeCN, another Zn–Dy complex, [Zn4Dy4(L)6(pdm)2(pdmH)4]·10CH3CN·5H2O (2), was obtained. For 1, its crystal structure can be viewed as a dimer of two Zn3DyIII units. However, for 2, four DyIII form a zigzag arrangement, and each of its terminals linked two ZnII ions. Interestingly, although the structural topologies of 1 and 2 are different, the coordination geometries of DyIII in 1 and 2 are all triangular dodecahedron (TDD-8). The difference is that the continuous shape measure (CShM) values of DyIII in 1 are larger than the corresponding values in 2. Magnetic investigation revealed that the diluted sample exhibits two magnetic relaxation processes, while 2 only exhibits a single relaxation process. Ab initio calculations indicated that, in the crystal lattice of 1, two complexes exhibiting slightly different CShM values of DyIII result in the double relaxation behavior of . However, for 2, one of two DyIII fragments possesses a fast quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM), resulting in its magnetic process presented at T < 1.8 K, so 2 exhibits single relaxation behavior. Abstract:We report the synthesis and crystal structures of four dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes with the general formula (Dy2L2 x Y2) (1–4) based on the association of various flexible benzothiazolyl ligands and β-diketonate ligands [(Dy2L2 x Z2) (x = 1, 3 with Z = 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedionate (dphac); x = 2, 4 with Z = hexafluoroacetylacetonate (hfac)]. While these complexes share similar dinuclear cores, magnetic investigations, in line with theoretical calculations, reveal a zero-field slow relaxation of the magnetization for all complexes, albeit different relaxation dynamics. Although the Dy3+ single-ion anisotropy is mainly driving the relaxation, the observed intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions shortcut the quantum tunneling of the magnetization.

Abstract:Four tetranuclear 3d-4f complexes, namely [Fe2Ln2(L)2(teaH)2(Cl)2](NO3)2·4CH3CN (H2L = N1,N3-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine, teaH3 = triethanolamine, Ln = Dy for 1 and Ln = Gd for 1') and [Co2Ln2(L)2(pdm)2(CH3COO)2(CH3OH)2](NO3)2·xCH3OH·yH2O (pdmH2 = 2,6-pyridinedimethanol, Ln = Dy, x = 5 and y = 2.5 for 2 and Ln = Gd, x = 6 and y = 1.5 for 2'), have been reported. Two FeIII and two DyIII in 1 formed a zigzag Fe1-Dy1-Dy1a-Fe1a arrangement with a Fe1-Dy1-Dy1a angle of 105.328(3)°. However, in contrast to 1, two CoIII and two DyIII ions in 2 formed a more linear Co1-Dy1-Dy1a-Co1a arrangement with a Co1-Dy1-Dy1a angle of 141.86(2)°. Additionally, two DyIII ions in 1 are eight-coordinated with a triangular dodecahedron geometry, while two DyIII ions in 2 adopt nine-coordination with a muffin geometry. Magnetic studies revealed slow magnetic relaxation behavior for 1, with an energy barrier Ea of 6.9 K. For 2, single molecule magnet behavior was presented under a zero dc field with an effective energy barrier Ueff of 64.0(9) K. Ab initio calculations for 1 and 2 indicate that compared to 2, complex 1 has a larger transversal magnetic moment of its ground Kramers doublets (KD) and a larger value of the tunnelling parameter (Δt) for the exchanged coupled ground state, which may result in poor single molecule magnet behavior for 1.

Abstract:A series of dinuclear lanthanide(III) complexes having general formulae [Ln(2)L(2)(thd)(4)] center dot 2CH(3)CN {Ln=Dy-III(1), Tb-III(2), Gd-III(3), Er-III(4)} were successfully synthesized using Schiff base (E)-2-((pyridin-2-ylmethylene)amino)phenol (LH) and co-ligand 2,2,6,6-Tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione (Hthd). The single crystal XRD data shows that complexes possess a dinuclear planar [Ln(2)(mu(2)-O)(2)](4+) core where phenolate oxygen atoms act as bridges between the two Ln(III) ions, and that the coordination sphere of Ln(III) with eight coordination has distorted trigonal dodecahedron geometry. The magnetic analysis shows complex 1 is a single molecule magnet having a zero-field effective energy barrier (U-eff) of 54.02 K and relaxation time of tau(o)=4.45x10(-6) s. Field-induced SMM behavior has been observed for 4 with an effective energy barrier of 26.9 K and tau(0)=2.4x10(-9) s. CASSCF+RASSI-SO calculations on 1, 2 and 4 provide deep insight regarding the electronic structure and single-ion anisotropy of lanthanide ions. Further, using state-of-the-art ab initio calculations, the nature of magnetic anisotropy and magnetic exchange interaction between the Ln(III) centers is analyzed to shed light on the magnetic dynamics of all the complexes 1-4.

Abstract:Two mononuclear seven-coordinate cobalt(II) complexes [Co(L)(3)(NO3)(2)] (L = 4-tert-butylpyridine, 1; L = isoquinoline, 2) were prepared and structurally analyzed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The coordination spheres of 1 and 2 exhibit distorted pentagonal bipyramid geometry. Analysis of their direct-current magnetic data reveals the existence of easy plane anisotropy (D > 0) with a small transverse anisotropy (E), which was further confirmed by high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) spectroscopy. Field-induced slow magnetic relaxations were observed under the applied dc field in complexes 1 and 2 by alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements. Importantly, these complexes are new instances of mononuclear high-coordinate cobalt(II)-based single-molecule magnets.

Abstract:Two new mononuclear Dy(III) compounds [Dy(H2O)4(Htpy)(dfa)]·2Cl (1) and [Dy(CH3OH)(Htpy)(NO3)(tma)2]·CH3OH (2) (Htpy = 4′-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine, Hdfa = difluoroacetic acid, Htma = trimethylacetic acid) were successfully prepared by mixed-ligand strategy. Structurally, the substitution of different carboxylate ligand in 1 and 2 induces insignificant structural distortion, but causes large difference in magnetic behavior. Analysis results reveal that compound 2 shows better SMM behaviour than 1 as a result of the ferromagnetic coupling and the shorter Dy-O bond as well as a pronounced bond length difference, in which bond length distribution becomes more predominant.
