Abstract:A supramolecular strategy has been applied to construct two tetranuclear lanthanide complexes for investigating the magnetic properties of individual lanthanide ions. The Ln(III) complexes (Ln = Dy, Tb) display field-induced slow magnetization relaxation, typical of single-molecule magnet behavior. The four lanthanide ions in the molecules are well separated by distances of ca. 9 Å, and thus the slow magnetization relaxation should be assigned to single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior. Therefore, the present complexes are novel supramolecular aggregates of four isolated SIMs.

Abstract:A dinuclear complex with the formula Dy2L2(H2L)Cl2(EtOH)2 (Dy2) has been synthesized by reacting DyCl3·H2O with a ligand H2L (H2L = N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine)) using ethanol as the solvent. Its crystal structure can be viewed as a dimer of two Dy(III) fragments, where each Dy(III) site shows a N2O6Cl coordination sphere with a pentagonal bipyramid geometry (D5h). Magnetic measurements reveal that Dy2 behaves as a single-ion magnet (SIM) under a zero field. When the field is applied, the ac magnetic susceptibilities show double and triple peaks under high (≥600 Oe) and low (<600 Oe) dc fields, respectively. In contrast to the common double relaxation pathways in SIMs, such multiple and intricate relaxation pathways have not been reported yet in the previous literature. In this work, by experimental analysis of the ac signals, we attribute the three slow relaxation pathways to quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM), intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction and spin reversal, respectively. In addition, ab initio calculations are used to elucidate the magnetic behaviours of Dy2. Overall, our work indicates that the interpretation of the relaxation process using double relaxation pathways is incomplete and difficult in previously reported literature.
Zero‐field Slow Magnetic Relaxation Behavior of Dy2 in a Series of Dinuclear {ln2} (ln=dy, Tb, Gd and Er) Complexes: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

Abstract:A series of dinuclear lanthanide(III) complexes having general formulae [Ln(2)L(2)(thd)(4)] center dot 2CH(3)CN {Ln=Dy-III(1), Tb-III(2), Gd-III(3), Er-III(4)} were successfully synthesized using Schiff base (E)-2-((pyridin-2-ylmethylene)amino)phenol (LH) and co-ligand 2,2,6,6-Tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione (Hthd). The single crystal XRD data shows that complexes possess a dinuclear planar [Ln(2)(mu(2)-O)(2)](4+) core where phenolate oxygen atoms act as bridges between the two Ln(III) ions, and that the coordination sphere of Ln(III) with eight coordination has distorted trigonal dodecahedron geometry. The magnetic analysis shows complex 1 is a single molecule magnet having a zero-field effective energy barrier (U-eff) of 54.02 K and relaxation time of tau(o)=4.45x10(-6) s. Field-induced SMM behavior has been observed for 4 with an effective energy barrier of 26.9 K and tau(0)=2.4x10(-9) s. CASSCF+RASSI-SO calculations on 1, 2 and 4 provide deep insight regarding the electronic structure and single-ion anisotropy of lanthanide ions. Further, using state-of-the-art ab initio calculations, the nature of magnetic anisotropy and magnetic exchange interaction between the Ln(III) centers is analyzed to shed light on the magnetic dynamics of all the complexes 1-4.
Capping Ligand Perturbed Slow Magnetic Relaxation in Dysprosium Single-Ion Magnets

Abstract:Single-ion magnets 1 and 2 and their diamagnetic analogues 3 and 4 for magnetic-site dilution were obtained through substitution of the coordinated water molecules of [Ln(TTA)(3)(H(2)O)(2)] (Ln=Dy (1, 2), Y (3, 4); TTA=4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-butanedionate) by 2,2'-bipyridine (1, 3) and 1,10-phenanthroline (2, 4) capping ligands. Their structures and magnetic properties were investigated with the goal of identifying features relevant to modulating relaxation dynamics of single-ion magnets. The metal ions in all complexes adopt an approximately square-antiprismatic (SAP) O(6)N(2) coordination environment. The SAP polyhedrons for both 1 and 2 show slight longitudinal compression, while the coordination sphere of 1 deviates more from an ideal SAP than that of 2, as indicated by the skew angles of the SAP environment. The similar values of U(eff) for the two magnetically diluted samples imply nearly the same distribution of low-lying states for their Dy(III) centers, which is consistent with the slight axial contraction observed for 1 and 2 and further corroborated by ligand-field analysis. The fast quantum tunneling rate τ(QTM) of 1, which is about ten times faster than that of 2, can presumably be associated with the larger rotation of the SAP surroundings. This distortion may result in a significant transverse anisotropy terms, and thus strongly affect the dynamic behavior of the system.

Abstract:A series of new tetranuclear lanthanide metal complexes of [Ln4(μ4-O2−)(HL)2(L)2]·0.5(H2NCH2CHOHCH2NH2)·(CH3CN)·1.25(H2O) (Ln = Tb(1)), [Ln4(μ4-O2−)(HL)2(L)2]·0.5(H2NCH2CHOHCH2NH2)·0.5(CH3CN)·0.25(H2O) (Ln = Dy(2) or Ho(3)), were elaborately synthesized using a Schiff base ligand, 1,3-bis(5-bromosalicylideneamino)-2-propanol) (H3L). They were structurally and magnetically characterized. The crystallographic data reveal the tetranuclear lanthanide core of complexes 1–3 bridged by one μ4-O2− ion. Complexes 1–3 contained one unusual Ln4 boat-shaped unit, forming a novel Ln4 cluster. Detailed static and dynamic magnetic analysis of complexes 1–3 revealed single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with anisotropy barrier of Ueff = 20.98 K and Ueff = 43.47 K and two pre-exponential factors τ0 = 7.66 × 10−7 s and τ0 = 9.75 × 10−7 s for complex 2.

Abstract:Two isostructural mononuclear Dy and Er pentanitrate complexes with an LnO10 coordination geometry have been synthesized and studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, luminescence and magnetic measurements. Slow relaxation of the magnetization behavior is simultaneously observed in two complexes with the same coordination environment, despite the different types of the 4f-shell electron distribution. Meanwhile, both complexes exhibit the respective characteristic Ln(iii) photoluminescence.

Abstract:A series of one-dimensional complexes [Ln(L(1))(3)(HOCH(2)CH(2)OH)](n) (L(1) = 2-furoate anion; Ln = Nd (1), Sm (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5), Er (6)) have been synthesized. The complexes were crystallized in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c and show a chain-like structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Magnetic properties indicate that carboxyl group of 2-furoate mediates different magnetic couplings in light and heavy rare earth complexes, namely, antiferromagnetic interaction between light rare earth ions and ferromagnetic interaction between heavy ones. Noticeably, complex 5 displays a strong frequency dependence of alternating current (AC) magnetic properties. Further magnetic studies show a distribution of a single relaxation process in 5. While 1,10-phenanthroline and phthalate anion (L(2)) were employed, [Dy(2)(L(2))(6)(H(2)O)](n) (7) was isolated by hydrothermal reactions and characterized magnetically. Research results also show the frequency dependence of AC magnetic susceptibilities, although the phthalate anions mediate antiferromagnetic coupling between Dy(III) ions. Further magnetic investigation of a neutral mononuclear complex with the formula [Dy(TTA)(3)(L(3))] (8) (TTA = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate; L(3) = 4,5-pinene bipyridine) suggests that the single-ion magnetic behavior originates the slow relaxation of Dy(III)-containing complexes.

Abstract:Four mononuclear lanthanide complexes, [Ln(depma)2(H2O)6]Cl3·xH2O·yCH3OH [Ln = Dy (1Dy), x = 6, y = 0; Gd (2Gd), x = 3, y = 1; Er (3Er), x = 6, y = 0; Yb (4Yb), x = 3, y = 1; depma = 9-diethylphosphono-methylanthracene], are reported and structurally characterized. The octa-coordinated environment of LnIII is composed of two oxygen atoms from two different depma ligands and six oxygen atoms from each bound water molecule. All four complexes show photoluminescence in the solid state at room temperature, originating from the ligand-centered emissions of depma. Furthermore, slow magnetization relaxation is found in 1Dy, 3Er and 4Yb with the energy barriers (Ueff) of 40.5 K (1 kOe), 9.8 K (1 kOe) and 28.9 K (0.75 kOe), respectively.

Abstract:Two mononuclear complexes containing a Dy(III) ion with eight- and nine-coordinate environments have been J successfully synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The coordination spheres of 1 and 2 exhibit the distorted spherical capped square antiprism and square antiprism geometries. Magnetic measurements reveal that both of the complexes show typical single-molecule magnetic behavior, and only complex 2 presents a butterfly hysteresis loop. Ab initio calculations also show the difference of the magnetic anisotropy of the Dy(III) ions in 1 and 2. The relationship between the coordination geometry and the magnetic property is discussed.

Abstract:A series of six-coordinate lanthanide complexes {(H3O)[Ln(NA)(2)]H2O}(n) (H(2)NA=5-hydroxynicotinic acid; Ln=Gd-III (1Gd); Tb-III (2Tb); Dy-III (3Dy); Ho-III (4Ho)) have been synthesized from aqueous solution and fully characterized. Slow relaxation of the magnetization was observed in 3Dy. To suppress the quantum tunneling of the magnetization, 3Dy diluted by diamagnetic Y-III ions was also synthesized and magnetically studied. Interesting butterfly-like hysteresis loops and an enhanced energy barrier for the slow relaxation of magnetization were observed in diluted 3Dy. The energy barrier () and pre-exponential factor ((0)) of the diluted 3Dy are 75K and 4.21x10(-5)s, respectively. This work illustrates a successful way to obtain low-coordination-number lanthanide complexes by a framework approach to show single-ion-magnet-like behavior.

Abstract:A hydroxide-bridged centrosymmetric DyIII dimer with each DyIII being five-coordinated has been synthesized using bulky hindered phenolate ligands. Magnetic studies revealed that this compound exhibits a slow magnetic relaxation of a single-ion origin together with a step-like magnetic hysteresis of the magnetic coupled cluster. The thermal relaxation barrier of magnetization is 721 K in the absence of a static magnetic field, while the intramolecular magnetic interaction is very large among reported 4f-only dimers. CASSCF calculations with a larger active space were performed to understand the electronic structure of the compound. The thermal relaxation regime and the quantum tunneling regime are well separated, representing a good model to study the relaxation mechanism of SMMs with intramolecular Dy-Dy magnetic interactions.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Better understanding the determining factors of dynamic magnetic relaxation in polynuclear lanthanide based single‐molecule magnets (SMMs) remains a challenge due to the complexity of such architectures involving interactions between the magnetic centers. To address this issue, two structurally related heterometal DyIII2ZnII2 SMMs, [Zn2Dy2(L)4(Ac)2(DMF)(CH3OH)]·CH3OH·2H2O (1) and [Zn2Dy2(L)4(Ac)2(DMF)2]·4CH3CN (2) (H2L = (E)‐2‐((2‐hydroxy‐3‐methoxybenzylidene)amino)‐4‐methyphenol, DMF = N,N‐Dimethylformamide), are introduced and investigated. Through modifying the auxiliary ligands on one DyIII sites while retaining that on the other DyIII, the intramolecular magnetic interactions and relaxation dynamics in these two heterometallic‐DyIII2ZnII2 SMMs can be tuned, demonstrating dramatically change on the magnet relaxation behavior with energy barrier change from a negligible value for 1 to 305 K for 2. Ab initio calculations reveal that changing the coordination geometries on the DyIII sites can significantly affect the magnetic interactions as well as single‐ion anisotropy. Abstract:Two novel tetranuclear lanthanide compounds with the formula [Ln 4 (L1) 2 (L2) 2 (μ 2 - OCH 3 ) 2 (CH 3 OH) 2 ]·CH 3 OH (Ln = Gd ( 1 ), Dy ( 2 ), H 2 L1 = 2-[(2-(hydroxyimino)propanehydrazide)methyl]-8-hydroxyquinoline, H 3 L2 = 2-[(2-(N'-acetylhydrazino)propanehydrazide)methyl]-8-hydroxyquinoline) were successfully prepared, and structurally and magnetically characterized. Crystal structural analyses reveal that two compounds are isostructural and they all consist of a tetranuclear Ln 4 cluster. All Ln(III) ions in them are eight-coordinated and located in a distorted triangular dodecahedron geometry. Magnetic studies indicate that 1 exhibits large magnetocaloric effect with the entropy change (-Δ S m ) of 32.10 J Kg -1 K -1 (at T = 2.0 K and Δ H = 7 T), and 2 displays slow magnetic relaxation behaviors.

Abstract:A series of mononuclear lanthanide Zn-Dy-Zn type single-molecule magnets (SMMs) were synthesized and magnetically characterized. The four molecules ([Zn2(L1)2DyCl3]·2H2O (1), [Zn2(L1)2Dy(MeOH)Br3]·3H2O (2), [Zn2(L1)2Dy(H2O)Br2]·[ZnBr4]0.5 (3) and [Zn2(L2)2DyCl3]·2H2O (4)) all display remarkable magnetic relaxation behavior with a relatively high energy barrier and hysteresis temperature, despite possessing a low local geometry symmetry of the center Dy(iii) ions. Ab initio studies revealed that the symmetry of the charge distribution around the Dy(iii) ion is the key factor to determine the relaxation of the SMMs. The four complexes orient their magnetic easy axes along the negative charge-dense direction of the first coordination sphere. The entire molecular magnetic anisotropy was therefore controlled by a single substituent atom in the hard plane which consists of five coordination atoms (perpendicular to the easy axis), and the lower charge distribution on this hard plane in combination with the nearly coplanarity of the five coordination atoms ultimately lead to the prominent magnetic slow relaxation. This offers an efficient and rational method to improve the dynamic magnetic relaxation of the mononuclear lanthanide SMMs that usually possess a low local geometry symmetry around the lanthanide(iii) center.
