Ambivalent Modernity: Showcasing Colonial Architecture in Manchukuo’s Capital City in the 1930S

Abstract:This paper charts the plurality of architectural styles in Changchun, before and after 1932 when the puppet state of Manchukuo was established, and analyzes the diversities, ambivalences and ambiguities in the practice of statecraft and urban construction. The author argues that Manchukuo's state ideology of the Kingly Way and Japan's paternalism competed with, rather than complemented, one another; hence the stylistic diversity in the capital city.
