Abstract:A few membranes for separation of organics were prepared by different methods,such as composite membranes of CA/PAN,PVA/PAN & PVA/CA,CTA hollow fiber,and blended polymer composite CA/PVB,& CA/MMA-AA,as well as PVA membrane with metal ion carriers.The membranes are asymmetric or composite.The sorption characteristics of the membrane materials (CA & PVA-Men+) was measured and membrane separation performance was examined.The results show that CA & CTA membranes and composite membranes are suitable for the separation of MTBE/MeOH,and the modified solution-diffusion model can successfully predict the performance of PV separation of MTBE/MeOH through CA membranes.PVA membrane with metal ion carriers may be a good candidate for the separation of benzene/cyclohexane from preliminary sorption experiment.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl butyral) is selected as a promising ethanol-permselective membrane based the solubility parameter theory, however it exhibits anomalous water perm-selectivity in practical pervaporation process. Comprehensive analysis based on experimental and theoretical methods were carried out to explore the inherent mechanism of the anomalous performance. Firstly, sum frequency generation vibrational spectra and contact angle were developed to quantify the surface reconstruction of membrane in air and ethanol, which indicated that hydrophilic hydroxyl tended to expose on membrane surface with ethanol thus improved the membrane affinity to water. Meanwhile, swelling behaviors proved more water would accumulate in the ethanol swollen membrane. Furthermore, theoretical analysis in terms of sorption and diffusion process, based on the UNIFAC-FV model and Fujita free volume theory, confirmed the mechanism of anomalous phenomenon of poly(vinyl butyral) membrane. The comprehensive investigation was expected to provide insights into the basic separation mechanism of pervaporation process.
Process design and optimization of continuous-flow pervaporation technique for the dehydration of ethanol-water mixture

Abstract:The separation properties of the membrane and two different pervaporation processes were introduced. The continuous-flow pervaporation process was designed and demonstrated. The process optimization for the dehydration of ethanol-water mixture was carried out. The number of stages and reheaters was calculated by stage-by-stage method for two kinds of cascades: with equal membrane areas per section and with 10 °C of temperature decrease per section. At the same condition, the results show that the cascade with 10 °C of temperature decrease per section has more advantages as comparing with the one with equal membrane areas per section. The developed cascade calculation makes it possible to scale up the industrial pervaporation process for alcohol dehydration.

Abstract:It is necessary to modify polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) before using it as separation membrane because of its excessive swelling. In this paper,modification methods of PVA are reviewed,including crosslinking, grafting,blending,hybridization and substitution;their advantages and disadvantages are listed;and some comments are given for problems in modification methods. The application of modified PVA membrane is presented in detail. The development and application of PVA pervaporation membrane with excellent hydrophilicity and PVA membrane with high conductivity and low methanol permeability for fuel cell are prospected,respectively.
Effect of the Permeants/Polymer Interactions on the Pervaporative Separation Properties of the P(Vdf-Co-Hfp) Membrane

Abstract:In this paper, the acetone-cast poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-co-HFP)) membranes were prepared by isothermally vacuum-dried at 60°C and were employed in pervaporation of methyl acetate (MeAc) or ethyl acetate (EtAc) dissolved water solutions. DSC study on the swelling process indicated that two states of both MeAc and EtAc in their swollen P(VDF-co-HFP) membranes might exist which were the ‘bound state’ and ‘bulk state’. In addition, relative to the pure EtAc, the pure MeAc had stronger interaction with the P(VDF-co-HFP) membrane, making for its higher solubility in and lower diffusivity through the membrane. However, there is a competition between the organic permeants/water interactions and the organic permeants/polymer interactions when the P(VDF-co-HFP) membrane was tested for its pervaporative separating properties. With respect to MeAc in its water mixtures, EtAc in its water mixtures had higher solubility in the membrane instead because of its weaker interaction with water. As a result, better separating properties (higher permeate flux and separation factor) when the P(VDF-co-HFP) membrane was in pervaporation of the EtAc/water mixtures were obtained.

Abstract:Pervaporation is one of the most active research areas in membrane science.It is an important component for chemical separations and has attached great attentions.In this paper,based on three main mixture systems viz.,dehydration of organic solvents,separation of organics form aqueous solution,separation of organic-organic mixtures,the recent development in pervaporation is reviewed,respectively.Separation of organic-organic mixtures by pervaporation is discussed with emphasis on the following aspects: polar/non-polar mixtures,aromatic/aliphatic mixtures,aromatic/alicyclic mixtures,isomers,multi-mixtures and desulfurization of gasoline.Finally,the advancement of further research and development about pervaporation are prospected.

Abstract:The prospect and the presentation of separation of acetic acid water system by pervaporation are reviewed.The characters of both water selective membrane and acid selective membrane used for separating acetic acid water are summarized in detail.At the same time,the current situation of theoretical study on process of separating acetic acid water by pervaporation and existing problems are introduced.It is pointed out that the primary study should focus on the preparation of suitable membranes at present.In order to meet the requirements of membrane preparation,new membrane materials must be developed or the present materials for membrane must be modified.Solution diffusion theory has some limitation in explaining experimental phenomena.The introduction of quantum theory and molecular dynamics theory will promote the simulation study of pervaporation process.

Abstract:Separation of aromatic/aliphatic mixtures is investigated extensively owing to the great importance in petrochemical industry and environmental protection. Compared to conventional technologies, pervaporation (PV) is a promising alternative in separation of organic/aliphatic mixtures and offers many advantages such as high separation efficiency, low energy consumption and simple operation. In recent years, PV separation of aromatic/aliphatic mixtures is receiving more attentions worldwide. In this paper, a review is presented on recent progress in PV membrane materials for separation of aromatic/aliphatic mixtures. The mechanism and application of PV are discussed in brief. Special emphasis is given to the recent research process in membrane materials such as polyimide, polyurethane and so on. Furthermore, the modification methods of membrane materials are summarized in detail such as grafting, copolymerization, blending and adding transfer enhancer. The design ideas of membrane materials are suggested and the foresight development in PV membrane for separation of aromatic/aliphatic mixtures is also illustrated.
Pervaporation Separation of Xylene Isomers by Hybrid Membranes of Paas Filled with Si Lane-Modified Zeolite

Abstract:Silicalite-1 zeolite was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and then loaded into poly(acrylic acid) sodium (PAAS) to prepare PAAS/silicalite-1 hybrid pervaporation membranes for the separation of xylene isomer mixtures. Characterization by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies confirmed that chemical modification on the zeolite surface had taken place. Based on sorption equilibrium experiments, the diffusion coefficients of permeates in the membrane were obtained, and the order of the diffusion coefficients of xylene isomers was found to be D-o < D-m < D-p An investigation of the effects of the original versus modified zeolite loading on the pervaporation performance was performed. With the original zeolite, the permeation flux of the binary xylene mixtures showed little change, whereas the selectivity of the hybrid membrane exhibited some enhancement. After modification of the zeolite surface, the selectivity of the hybrid membrane was clearly improved, the permeation flux of the membrane decreased slightly, and the maximum separation factors of the p-/o-xylyne (alpha(p/o)) and p-/m-xylene (alpha(p/m)) mixtures were determined to be 2.62 and 2.68, respectively. The experimental results revealed that the modification promoted the compatibility of the PAAS and silicalite-1 zeolite interface.

Abstract:Membrane separation technology is contemporarily a high and new technology in chemical engineering. It has been consequently developed rapidly in recent 30 years due to the availability of solving many serious problems,such as energy,resources and environment. Membrane separation technology of pervaporation as a novel separation technology is typically energy-saving and cleaner-production technology. Compared to the conventional azeotropicdis-tillation and extractive distillation applied to azeotropic systems,pervaporation process could lead to an energy saving of 1/3~1/2 and decrease operating costs even no less than 50%. The industrial applications of the pervaporation dehydration over the world are introduced,and re-search progresses and industrial feasibilities of several pervaporation membranes are shown in this paper,which cover gasoline desulfurization membranes,methanol and ethanolpermselec-tive membranes,dimerthyl carbonate/methanol and arene/alkane separation membranes.

Abstract:<p>Pervaporation is a molecular separation membrane technology for selective permeation of water or organic compounds from organic-water mixtures or organic-organic mixtures. The pervaporation process is controlled by thermodynamic partitioning and kinetic mobility of molecules in the membrane. The chemical property and morphology of membrane materials can be engineered to tailor the complementary sorption and diffusion coefficient and selectivity, and thus the permeability (or flux) and selectivity (or separation factor). In this review, we highlight the latest progresses of pervaporation membrane materials, including pure polymeric membranes and inorganic membranes, as well as mixed-matrix membranes and emerging two-dimensional-material membranes. Challenges and future opportunities in materials design, fabrication and structure-performance relationship are identified to develop next-generation pervaporation membranes with enhanced separation efficiency.</p>

Abstract:Pervaporation is nowadays considered as a basic unit operation for separation of organic-organic liquid mixtures because of its efficiency in separating azeotropic and close-boiling mixtures. This review attempted to summarize the pervaporation performance of various membranes, namely chitosan, poly (vinyl alcohol), cellulose acetate, polyelectrolyte-surfactant and aromatic polymers membranes in alcohol-ether and alcohol-ester separations. Among above mentioned membranes, the membranes containing poly (vinyl alcohol) have high separation factor but low permeation flux. Although Polyelectrolyte-surfactant membranes have both high separation factor and permeation flux, they are not stable enough. Efforts are also focusing on measures to modify membrane preparation methods by cross linking, blending, filling, surface modification with the aim of changing the physical-chemical structure of the membranes and finally improving the pervaporation performance. For ethanol-ethyl tert-butyl ether separation, semi-interpenetrating polymer network can improve the permeation flux due to increase of free volume. For methanol-dimethyl carbonate separation, silicotungstic acid hydrate/chitosan hybrid membranes can improve separation factor and permeation flux at the same time. The pervaporation performance can basically meet the industrial application requirement.

Abstract:This paper reviews the current trends of the industrial applications of pervaporation and vapor permeation membrane technology briefly.Many industrial application examples of pervaporation and vapor permeation were described in details such as dehydration in the preparation process of ethanol biofuels,dehydration of alcohols,ketones and ethers,esterification intensification by dehydration,dehydration of organic solvent,recovery of organics or VOC in wastewater,as well as separation of organic organic mixtures.Moreover,the problems and suggestions for the development of pervaporation and vapor permeation membrane technology were proposed as well.
