Abstract:In this paper, a novel visual experimental apparatus for simulating seafloor hydrothermal venting is proposed. The instrument consists mainly of an acrylic pressure vessel and a hydrothermal fluid syringe pump, which provided a 360 deg view of the simulated hydrothermal venting and plumes. Theoretical calculation and finite element analysis (FEA) were conducted to demonstrate the appropriateness of material selection and structural design for the acrylic pressure vessel. The experimental apparatus was tested at elevated temperature and pressure of up to 300 °C and 12 MPa. Hydrothermal venting experiments were successfully carried out with this apparatus, and clear images of hydrothermal plumes were obtained.

Abstract:The measurement principles of torque and rotational speed were analysed.A virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device was presented,which can be used to measure torque and rotational speed conveniently and accurately.The methods of designing virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device were introduced.Electrorheological experiments were carried out using this device.It shows experimentally that virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device has high accuracy and good anti-jamming ability,and the operation is simple.The virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device can be put into practical applications.

Abstract:As an important indicator to evaluate the suspension effect, the uniformity of solid particle distribution is directly related to mass transfer and reaction efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the solid particle distribution in viscous system. The particle distribution of a dense solid–liquid system composed of glass beads-malt syrup stirred by the propeller is investigated experimentally by optical probe method, and the effects of impeller speed, number of baffles, particle size, average solid concentration and liquid viscosity on the solid particle distribution are discussed. The results show that, compared with the radial direction, the axial concentration distribution in the stirred tank is more uneven, and the axial mixing index is about 2–5 times the radial one. With the increasing stirring speed, the axial mixing index decreases slowly at first, then sharply decreases after reaching the just off-bottom suspension speed, and finally tends to be stable. The uniformity varies inversely with particle size and average solid concentration and directly with liquid viscosity. When the same effect is achieved, less energy is required without baffles.

Abstract:Gas-liquid suction flow is common in daily life and industrial process, which normally brings problems including noises and vibrations. In this paper, we designed an experimental apparatus to investigate the whole process for liquid film suction through a tube, from liquid inundating the tube nozzle to complete detachment. Bubbly flow, slug flow, and tubular co-flowing jet flow were observed and the mechanism of flow transition was discussed. The generation of bubble/slug, the change of its length, the interaction between each other, and the whole life of small liquid column were studied in detail. We hope this study could provide a clear understanding of vibrations in the process of non-contact liquid suction and guide the design and optimization of related industrial applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we disclose a self-developed liquid crystal device-based optical apparatus for the teaching experiment of college students. Three relevant experiments have been presented. Through the teaching experiment class, the students have learnt the knowledge on the light-matter interaction, the photo-patterning of a liquid crystal q-plate and the generation of optical vortex, and the manipulation of micro-particle via angular momentum. Most students held positive remarks on the optical apparatus, and were satisfied with the assigned tasks in the experiment. Indeed, our proposed optical apparatus is not only applicable to the explorative research work, but also suitable for the college students' teaching laboratories.

Abstract:A new apparatus used for determination the saturated vapor pressure of a liquid had been designed for solving the difficulties of cleaning the isoteniscope and placing liquid in it. A water circulating vacuum pump and a three-way valve were introduced to control the system pressure and adjust the vacuum level of each component. A small diameter catheter was inserted into the isoteniscope for the good flow of the liquid. The as-designed apparatus can be easily set up and operated independently and conveniently, and the time for cleaning was reduced obviously. It provides a potential application in experiment teaching and scientific research for the determination of the saturated vapor pressure of a liquid.

Abstract:According to the need for viscosity measurement of refrigerant mixtures, a new rotatable capillary viscometer is developed and designed. It is adequate for the viscosity investigation of the low boiling point liquid mixtures. A rotatable capillary viscometer is embed-ded in a pressure vessel. It combines the rotation method and the pressure vessel to realize the continuous experiment and eliminates the error brought from the deflation, which can repeat the viscosity measurement of the low boiling point liquid mixtures in the high pressure. The rotatable capillary viscometer was calibrated by R22 and R290 and checked by R410A. According to the results, the relative deviation of the viscometer has been controlled to be less than 0. 81%.

Abstract:Sediment pressure transfer device, which is used to transfer the samples from the pressurized sampler to an experimental culture vessel for in situ culture of submarine microbes. The device matches the lead screw piston sampler developed by Zhejiang University. The hydraulic pump uses sediment culture fluid as a transport medium to increase the pressure to the required pressure for the system and scour the sediment from the sampling barrel into the water storage unit. The magnetic agitator in the water storage tank mixed the sediment and culture liquid evenly, and the micro-flow pump at the outlet of the water storage tank efficiently transported the sediment culture medium mixture to the culture kettle. This paper mainly introduces the system design, work flow and pressure load denaturation analysis of important parts, and introduces the working environment and experimental scheme of the device.

Abstract:To enhance the mass transfer between liquid and gas,A new type of reactor-Rotor Drum Reactor has been designed.Under different operation conditions,the gas holdup and residence time distribution were measured by volume method and pulse method,the gas-liquid mass transfer characteristics of the new reactor were studied via deoxidization of water with air.Results showed that the liquid was close to plug flow reactor,gas holdup increased with the increase of N and QG,the volume mass-transfer coefficient,KLa,increased with the increase of N and QG,but changed slightly with the increase of QL.
Theory And Experiment Of The Valveless Piezoelectric Pump With Rotatable Unsymmetrical Slopes

Abstract:With no relative motion at joint, no internal contamination, low manufacturing cost, and easy to microminiaturization, the valveless piezoelectric pump has unrivaled application in one-time use and miniaturization. However, the microminiaturization of the pump itself cannot microminiaturize the whole system including the pump. Thus, this paper focuses on how to integrate mixing and transport of piezoelectric liquid. Furthermore, the difficult and challenging issues of the ratio of mixing fluid and composition control are also discussed. The valveless piezoelectric pump with rotatable unsymmetrical slopes is put forward under this background. Its major features are setting drive and transfer in one, also setting transfer and mixing in one. Firstly, the design of the valveless piezoelectric pump with rotatable unsymmetrical slopes is proposed and the one-way flow principle is analyzed. Then, the fluid mechanics model of the valveless piezoelectric pump with rotatable unsymmetrical slopes is established. Meanwhile, the flow numerical analysis and calculation of the pump cavity are done. Finally, the experiments on relationship between the rotation angles of the slope and the flow rate and slope angles of rotation and the two inlets flow ratio are conducted. The experimental results show that: the maximum flow reaches 32.32 ml/min. The maximum relative error between the theoretical results and the experimental ones is 14.59%. According to the curve indicating the rotating different angles of rotatable unsymmetrical slopes to the flow ratio of the two inlets, the experimental and theoretical maximum relative error is 3.75%. Thus, the principle feasibility of the valveless piezoelectric pump with rotatable unsymmetrical slopes and the theory reliability are verified and proven.
Theoretical Research For The Rotor Of Liquid Floated Gyroscope

Abstract:A new type of micromechanical gyroscope was put forward, it is called the liquid floated gyroscope. It was studied in the aspects of the dynamic characteristics in this paper, especially for it's rotor. This new micromechanical gyroscope is a device of inertial navigation. This gyroscoe's kinematics and it's dynamics were transformated in the confined space, this kind of conversion was in the different coordinate system. And it's rotor was driven by the magnetic role of stator. For the rotary inertia of rotor, especially it's angular velocity and it's moment of inertia, these variables was transformated that relative to the inertial reference frame. At the same time they were transformated under the condition of relativing to the base coordinate system. Especially for this gyroscope's rotor and it's characteristics of dynamic, in the end, we put forward to some measures on improving the velocity of rotor, meanwhile these measures improved the accuracy of liquid floated gyroscope. And this model of liquid floated gyroscope was carried on the simulation results in the comsol software. Through the dynamic theory analysis result, the rotor can be processed into ellipsoid, and the radian of boundary should processed into 0.5 mm. The rotor should add the nanometer materials to resistance to high temperature.

Abstract:Self-propulsion of droplets is of great significance in many fields. The spontaneous horizontal motion and self-jumping of droplets have been well realized in various ways. However, there is still a lack of an effective method to enable a droplet to rotate spontaneously and steadily. In this paper, by employing an acid droplet and a liquid metal, the spontaneous and steady rotation of droplets is achieved. For an acid droplet, it may spontaneously move when it is deposited on the surface of the liquid metal. By adjusting experimental parameters to the proper range, the self-rotation of droplet happens. This phenomenon originates from the fluctuation of the droplet boundary and the collective movement of bubbles that are generated by the chemical reactions between the acid droplet and liquid metal. This rotation has a simpler implementation method and more steady rotation state. Its angular velocity is much higher than that driven by other mechanisms. Moreover, the movements of acid droplets on the liquid metal are classified according to experimental conditions. The internal flow fields, the movements and distribution of bubbles, and the fluctuation of the droplet boundary are also explored and discussed. The theoretical model describing the rotational droplet is given. Abstract:Rotor–stator reactor (RSR), an efficient mass transfer enhancer, has been applied in many fields. However, the hydrodynamic characteristics of liquid flow in RSR are still a mystery despite they are fundamental for the mass transfer performance and processing capacity. In view of the above, this paper studies the liquid–liquid flow and liquid holdup in RSR under various conditions with a high-speed camera. The paper firstly demonstrates two flow patterns and liquid holdup patterns that we obtained from our experiment and then presents in succession a flow pattern and a liquid holdup criterion for the transition of film flow to filament flow and complete filling to incomplete filling. It is found that experimental parameters, including rotor–stator distance, rotational speed and volume flow rate exert great influence on the average droplet diameter and size distribution. Besides, by comparison and contrast, we also find that the experimental values match well with our previous predicted calculations of the average diameter, and the relation between the average diameter and the mean energy dissipation rate.

A simple numerical model of the water bottle flipping experiment

Abstract:The water bottle flip experiment is a recreational, non-conventional illustration of the conservation of angular moment. When a bottle partially filled with water is thrown in a rotational motion, water redistributes throughout the bottle, resulting in an increase of moment of inertia and thus to a decrease in angular velocity, which increases the probability of it falling upright on a table as compared with a bottle filled with ice. The investigation of this phenomenom is accessible to undergraduate students and should allow them to gain better understanding of combined translational and rotational motions in classical mechanics. In addition to reporting a series of detailed experiments and analyzing them using standard image analysis, we provide a simple theoretical framework and subsequent numerical implementation based on the decomposition of the water volume into thin slices of a rigid body that are subjected to fictitious forces in the non-inertial frame of the spinning bottle. This model allows us to capture quantitatively the main experimental findings, including the angular velocity slow-down for a given range of water filling fractions. Finally, we discuss additionnal counter-intuitive effects that contribute to bottle stabilization on landing.

Abstract:A valveless piezoelectric pump with rotatable unsymmetrical slopes is developed in this research. It has the following features: The pump integrates driving and transporting, and it can mix different fluids while transporting them. In this paper, firstly, the design of the valveless piezoelectric pump with rotatable unsymmetrical slopes was proposed, and the single-direction flow principle was explained. Then, the fluid mechanics model of the valveless piezoelectric pump with rotatable unsymmetrical slopes was established. Meanwhile, the numerical simulation of the pump was performed. Finally, the experiments on relationship between the rotation angles of the slope and the flow rates were conducted. The experimental results showed that the maximum flow was 32.32 mL min−1. The maximum relative error between the theoretical results and the experimental ones was 14.59%. For the relationship between rotation angles and flow ratio of two inlets, the relative error between the experimental and theoretical maxima was 3.75%. Thus, the experiments proved the feasibility of the pump design and verified the theory.
