Abstract:The Yellow River basin is formed by three geological processes including the rising of the Qinghai - Tibet Plateau, loess eolian deposit in Central Asia and the epeirogenic earth movement of the North China Plain. The Yellow River, which is characterized by silt, dyke breaching and river realignment, has been called the great trouble of China. Many great representatives on Yellow River management from Ancient. China to the establishment of the P. R. China proposed various management strategies like blockage, dredging, river wall, dividing and gathering, which, though effective sometimes, did not solve the trouble completely. However, no great dyke breaching and river realignment has happened since the establishment of the P. R. China, and the current course of the Yellow River has been keeping stable for 154 years since 1855. Under the prerequisite that the fundamental realities of China have not been ultimately improved, the current course of the River must be kept stable for another 100 similar to 120 years. Therefore, the following measures like sand reduction, water increasing, water saving and pollution reduction should be implemented aiming at improving the situation of water resource shortage, river bed aggradations and water pollution. The research on four important scientific issues including dualist water cycle of river basin and its evolution mechanism, flow and sediment coupling simulation under the effect of frequent human activities, rational water resource distribution and water - sand joint operation, and the comprehensive river basin management under the effect of climate changes shall be strengthened on the basis of modern science and technology. 100 years later, when the total population of China is greatly reduced due to the implementation of the one child policy, a great many people can be migrated from the Yellow River flooding area, and a new channel can be vacated for realignment of the River to follow its rule.
