Abstract:A paper entitled Declaration on China-based cultural construction by 10 professors during 1930s,triggered a debate toward the issue on Chinese culture,which still attracts constant attention of scholars until today. This paper is ready to do an elegant study of the research status since1930s. The research from 1930s to 1970s was not a systematic one,but scholars took the opportunity to express their own ideas on the East and West culture. In 1980s,particularly in the mainland academics,for this debate,in the unanimous recognition of its political,party of the background at the same time,researchers have already started to pay attention to the age and the social background of the controversy,from a non-political view. From 1990s to today,scholars have begun to transcend the ideological framework. By the introduction of a modern perspective,the significance of culture and modernization of this debate was begin to gradually highlight.

Abstract:This year is the 100th anniversary of Zhang Dainian’s birthday.Mr.Zhang has always been concerned with the culture issue.In the cultural debate of 1930s,he opposed both the Superiority Theory of Eastern Culture and the Wholesale Westernization Theory,and proposed the Cultural Synthetic Creation Theory.Besides,in the cultural debates of the 1980s and 1990s,he further proposed the Cultural Synthetic Innovation Theory,after discussing the idea of creating contemporary Chinese socialist new culture on the basis of combining the eastern and western cultural achievements of ancient and current times.The Synthetic Innovation Theory plays an important role in and has positive impact on the construction of contemporary Chinese cultural theories and the selection of cultural direction.This thesis investigates the proposition and development of the Cultural Synthetic Innovation Theory,discusses the contributions of the theory and the challenges it is facing and explores the conditions and prospect of the Cultural Synthetic Innovation Theory.

Abstract:The education reform in late Qing Dynasty,centering on abolishing the imperial examinations and establihing new style-schools,had schocked the scholars in the old education system.Those scholars held different views towards this reform.Some,who regarded it as the right way to make the country strong,were actively involved in the reform.Others,who held that the reform disturbed the thoughts and values of the traditional society and the orders of the rurual society,became frustrated and grumpy and attacked the new education fiercely.The scholars' different viewpoints and behaviours were colsely related to the objective environment in which they live,and their personal experiences and mental attitudes.To some extent,their viewpoints towards education resulted from their subjective construction. This construction was closely related to their personalities,their original knowledge structures and their endurance of sufferings.The changes of those scholars' mental attitudes during the education reform and their effects could not only provide useful perspectives for research on early modernization of Chinese education, but also should be an important part of the research.

Abstract:In the The early 20~(th) century,the traditional Chinese fine arts and the art circle,impacted by Western modernism,the new culture and the new thoughts,witnessed the modern transformation of ideology and the value system.Besides the discussions on the noumenon of fine arts,the modern transformation stressed on the study of the real connection between fine arts and the public,and tried to analyze the role of fine arts in the process of the whole nation's modern transformation. The particificaiton and multiple perspectives of social criticism of the Chinese intellectual elites and public artists had important historical and practical significances on the art,art education and the combination of remolding national character and enlightenment in public areas as well as on constructing the system to make art and art education more socialized, modernized,popularized and life-oriented.Meanwhile,the new communication among fine arts,aesthetics,anthropology, ethnology and social philosophy and other fields had been built so as to form the public discourse of Chinese fine arts ideology and value in early 20th,which made the history with the modernized exploration of the whole nation and fine arts, and opened the door for us to be part of world modernized art and culture.

Abstract:Having gone through the vicissitudes of a history of thousands of years, the Chinese culture was firmly established on the basis of patriarchal clan system and small-scale farming economy, with aesthetic aspiration as its character -until recent times. When hit hard by western military forces, the Chinese people looked back on their own tradition with a hurt pride. They started to replace aesthetic aspiration with pursuit of technical progress, and learned to partition their culture into two opposed parts -the advanced and the backward. In such a case, the crisis of cultural identity and many other social problems arose, only to get worse with the nation’s march into modernization.

Abstract:The first decade of 1900s was the decade when great changes had taken place in Chinese traditional education.The abolition of the imperial examination system,the issue and implementation of modern school system and the establishment of a large number of new-style schools had greatly shocked the souls of millions of scholars who studied earnestly day and night under the old educational system and had a lot to do with their future and destinies.As a traditional scholar benefiting from imperial examination system,facing great educational changes in the early 1900s,the cognition and activities of Yun Yuding,on the one hand,were greatly influenced by his growth and traditional culture.He felt distressful,grieved and enraged at the collapse of mainstream value system of the feudal society;on the other hand,the consideration of the interests of his family and himself impelled him to get involved into the changes consciously and unconsciously.All the conflicts and paradoxes shown in his lectures and activities were actually a miniature of the complexities of the Chinese intellectuals in the early 1900s and reflected a cultural predicament confronting the intellectuals in times of critical transformation.

Abstract:CAI Yuan-pei's view on the Chinese and Western Culture constitutes an important and most characteristic part of his school of thought.In regard to traditional culture,he advocated deconstructing Confucian ideology,stood for the reform on Chinese characters and criticized the non-scientific feature of traditional medicine,all of which are basically consistent with the New Culture Movement.On the other hand,he himself respected Confucius enormously and was in great favor of the Doctrine of the Mean of the Confucian school.With regard to Western culture,CAI Yuan-pei emphasizes greatly the importance of learning scientific concepts from the European culture,saying that Europeanization means scientification.He defined the New Culture Movement as the Chinese Renaissance.CAI Yuan-pei's view on the Chinese culture and the Western culture is of significant instructional value in the construction of the academic atmosphere at Peking University.

Abstract:The shackle that binds the sunstantial development of Chinese comes from the dual-contrast thinking mode on the basis of epistemology which stings to the view of duality between subject and object. The re-discussion in 1990 on Paris Manuscripts, particularly on Law of Beauty, sufficiently revealed the confinement of the above-mentioned thinking to aesthetic study. And the 1990's argument on practical aesthetics raised several constructive opinions of importance to the development of Chinese aesthetics, but retained some misunderstandings and disputable views. Therefore, the development of aesthetic study won't expect a breakthrough unless it gets rid of the restraint of the mode of epistemological dual-contrast thinking. From this perspective, we conclude that Mr. Jiang Kongyang's theory of aesthetic relationship on the basis of the theory of practice and that of creativity presents a valuable approach to attain the objective.

Abstract:Based on a social-historical analysis of "Chinese modernity" and "Chinese cultural identity" in the context of social transformation,i.e.recovering the face of modernity as a "historical event" since the late Qing Dynasty,we can conclude "the Deng Zhenglai Question" deals with the pathology of "crisis of cultural identity" and "absence of Confucian orthodoxy" in our time.Because of the coexistence of pressure of rightness and crisis of identity in contemporary China,we are supposed to shape a new cultural identity which can response to the pressure of rightness,and seek for a "hybridity identity" among Confucian tradition,socialist tradition and partial western tradition.When reconstructing the cultural identity,we should act up to "the Precept by Deng Zehngali-Wang Hui & Deng Xiaomang-Qing Hui",which means the constriction of a "new civilization"(in the sense of Liang Qichao) between China and the West,neither returning to the tradition unconditionally nor adhering to the West unreflectedly.
