Abstract:Internal gear pumps have significant advantages over other types of pump, such like high operating pressure, efficient transmission of energy, long service life, little pressure ripples and low noise emissions. Due to the nature of water, such as, low viscosity, poor lubricity and high vapour pressure, the performance of water hydraulic internal gear pumps is totally different from the oil ones. Using tap water as working medium, the experiments of internal gear pump are implemented and the performances are obtained. The results indicate the floating plates are the key components of water hydraulic internal gear pumps which decide the efficiency and service life of the pumps. Then, the pressing forces acting on the floating plates and the contact stresses are calculated. Finally, the causes of wear failure of floating plates are investigated and some design principles in water hydraulic internal gear pumps are also proposed.

Abstract:The demand of hydraulic parallel motion system of space rendezvous and docking simulator to its hydraulic system is high flow and high performance. To achieve good motion simulation results and meet the requirements of precision control, a method of self-tuning parameters fuzzy PID control of proportional water valve opening has been employed to control oil temperature, a method of online vacuum degassing in a sealed system has been used to increase oil effective bulk modulus, and a device has been developed to measure oil bulk modulus online. Experimental research has been carried out on the hydraulic driving system of comprehensive test bed for docking mechanism. The experimental results show that precise control of oil temperature has been achieved and bulk modulus of oil has been increased obviously.
Experimental Analysis On Oil Film Properties Of Plane Port Pair In Axial Piston Machine

Abstract:To investigate lubrication characteristics of plane port pair, one of the most critical tribo-pairs in axial piston pump or motor, a new test rig was built up to simulate the operating condition of the pair and obtain the lubricating oil film for parameter acquisiting. This rig is principally characterized by supply pressure up to 31.5 MPa, accurate control of oil film thickness by separate design of oil circuit and electrohydraulic feedback control, and the control properties of its hydraulic circuit were simulated. The measured oil film thickness was analyzed by comparison of experiments and theoretical results. Experiments show that time for film forming and balance film thickness are two key parameters for describing oil film properties, and that operating condition Such as Supply pressure, fluid temperature also notably affects the film thickness and its distribution, but they do not show equivalent action. Lubrication effects can be valued by the measured frictional torque of the tribo-pair. Based on simulating the operating condition, acquisiting three main parameter for the lubrication characteristics of oil film using the test rig, is one effective methods for lubrication characteristic research on plane tribo-pairs.

Abstract:The digital simulation of the fast electro-hydraulic actuator,which is used in piston compressor,was carried out according to parameters under its practical working conditions.The dynamic characteristics of the actuator were analyzed.According to the disadvantage that the flow rate is not enough,the solution that using two parallel fast switching valves as actuator is put forward.Through the simulation analysis,the conclusion that the solution fitted for the requirement of the practical working conditions was made.

Abstract:The abrasion phenomenon in the inner surface of the stator of a double acting vane pump(DAVP) is easily happened, especially in suction mineral oil area, when the pump is working. In order to solve the problem, the theoretical analysis is studied and the mathematical model is established in the paper. Therefore, the conclusions are reached as follows: the force applied on the vane of the DAVP set up along radius direction is less than that on the vane set up forward incline direction, at the same time, the abrasion of the inner surface of the stator is much smaller.
Modelling and Experiment Study on Fluid Character of Axial Piston Pump

Abstract:To study the fluid character of axial piston pump,a mathematical model of flow condition in piston chamber was developed with compressibility of fluid oil.The model was further improved by analysis of movement model of piston,cross area of valve plate,throttle coefficient,flow loss inside pump,etc.Besides,the model of whole piston pump with its hydraulic system was developed with lamped parameter method.A simulation system was built by using Matlab based on the mathematical pump model.A visual graphical user interface was established to automatically analyze the relation between pump geometric structure,working conditions,system parameters and flow conditions of pump.The flow conditions of the pump were tested by using pump flow ripple test rig.It is shown that the pressure pulsation and flow ripple results calculated by the mathematical model agree well with the experimental results.The analytical error can be controlled within 5%.It can be concluded that the developed mathematical model has high precision and can accurately predict the fluid character of axial piston pump.

Abstract:The design of millimeter-scale rotary engine(Wankel) was introduced,which is quite different from large-scale engine's parts design and manufacture.To avoid the affection of micro-combustion due to reducing engine's scale,high-pressure gas was used to drive engine.A micro-rotary internal combustion engine was developed,in which the high energy density hydrocarbon was used as fuels.The pneumatic micro-rotary engine test bench was presented.The experimental result shows that the engine speed and power output increases when increasing inlet gas pressure,and the engine's output power and efficiency will increase obviously as engine's seal is improved.

Abstract:In this study, a new form of hybrid pneumatic combustion engine based on compressed air injection boosting is proposed. The hybrid pneumatic combustion engine regenerates the wasted energy during engine brake to improve the engine performance achieving better fuel economy. The mathematic model of the hybrid pneumatic combustion engine including a supercharged engine and the compressed air tank has been established. The steady-state and transient performance of the engine are analysed. Results show that the air injection boosting system can effectively improve the steady-state performance. Under the speed of 1900 r/min and 100% load, the engine torque and power can be increased from 1039 N m, 206.9 kW to 1057 N m, 210 kW by adopting air injection boosting with the injection pressure of 0.5 MPa. Effects of air injection parameters are also studied, showing that better performance can be achieved under higher air tank pressure and larger injection hole diameter. In addition, a transient analysis is completed under the speed of 1100 r/min. The result shows that when air injection boosting is used, the responding time of the engine to an instant load increase can be potentially reduced from 5.5 to 3.5 s under the injection pressure and duration of 0.5 MPa and 3 s. Meanwhile, the tank pressure has limited influence on the transient performance of the engine.

Abstract:Purpose For moderate pressure and high pressure gear pumps, the temperature failure problem of bearings is now of considerable concern because of their heavy loads. However, the compact structure and the efficiency consideration make it extremely difficult to improve the bearing cooling. A self-circulating oil bearing system is developed for gear pumps with self-lubricating bearings to solve this problem. The oil is aspirated in from the low pressure chamber of the gear pump and discharged to the same chamber by using the pressure difference in the journal bearing, thus achieving the self-circulation. Design/methodology/approach An experiment test rig has been built for the feasibility study. The oil flow rate under different speeds has been recorded. Furthermore, the temperatures of the bearings with or without the oil circulation have been compared. Additionally, the oil flow in the test rig has been simulated using computational fluid dynamics codes. Findings The experimental and numerical results agree well. The experimental results indicate that the oil flow rate increases approximately linearly with the speed and the bearing temperature can be lowered successfully. The calculation results indicate that the bearing load capacity is nearly the same. Both the experimental and numerical studies establish that the self-circulating oil bearing system works successfully. Originality value As far as the authors know, it is the first time to find that the self-circulation can be built using the pressure difference in the bearing oil film, and this principle can be applied in the cooling and lubrication of the gear pumps to solve the temperature failure problem.

Abstract:This study presents a novel roller piston pump,in which a cam guide-roller type rolling support is adopted to replace the sliding pair support of the swash plate-slipper pair to achieve the oil suction and discharge of the piston cavity.In addition,the shaft distribution is used to replace the original valve plate distribution and the driving shaft is used as the distribution shaft to remove the valve plate structure,which greatly simplifies the design of the axial piston pump.Such a configuration largely reduces the number of sliding friction pairs of the pump,and avoids the influence of the sliding friction pair on it under high-speed and variable-speed conditions.Firstly,mathematical models of the mechanical and volumetric efficiencies of the roller pump are deduced respectively through force analysis and the compressibility equation.Based on the numerical simulation of MATLAB and AMESim,the effects of load pressure and rotational speed on mechanical and volumetric efficiencies are studied respectively,and it is verified that the roller pump has no structural flow pulsation.The prototype pump is then designed and built,along with a special test rig.The outlet pressure,outlet flow,and torque of the pump under different load pressures and rotational speeds are measured,and the mechanical and volumetric efficiencies of the prototype pump under various load pressures and rotational speeds are obtained.The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulated analysis.When the load pressure is 8 MPa and the speed is 5000 r/min,the mechanical and the volumetric efficiencies are 85.5%and 96.8%,respectively.When the speed is increased to 10000 r/min,the mechanical and the volumetric efficiencies are 66.7%and 95.6%,respectively.The experimental results show that the proposed roller piston pump has excellent efficiency under wide-speed and high-speed conditions and can be a potential solution as a fuel pump in aerospace fuel systems.
Experimental and Numerical Study of the Influence of Loading Direction on the Lubrication and Cooling of Self-Circulating Oil Bearing System Applied in Internal Gear Pumps

Abstract:For middle-pressure and high pressure gear pumps, the temperature failure problem of bearings is now of considerable concern due to their heavy loads. A self-circulating oil bearing system has been developed for gear pumps in this paper to solve this problem. A test rig has been designed and built to carry out a series of tests for variable loading directions and rotational speeds. An experimental investigation and numerical model development to predict the behaviour of the self-circulating bearing subjected to different loading directions is described. The experimental and numerical results agree well. It was found that the variation of loading directions has a strong effect on the oil flow rates of the system. The maximum oil flow rate can be achieved when the loading direction is along the hole axis direction and a considerable part of the friction heat can be carried away by the oil. The lubrication of the bearing will also be improved.

Abstract:To study the starting performance of hydraulic free piston engine(HFPE),the typical starting phases of HFPE were investigated through experiments.According to different starting energy sources and excitement modes in HFPE,4 starting modes of constant pressure valve control,constant pressure position control,starting hydraulic accumulator(SHA) valve control and SHA position control were given.With the change in supply-oil pressure,4 starting performance parameter curves including displacement of the piston assembly,the pressure difference in scavenging chambers,the pressure difference in combustion chambers and the one in the hydraulic chambers of the pump were tested in constant pressure starting mode.The relationship of the 4 parameters above-mentioned and initial accumulated pressure were analyzed in the SHA starting mode.The differences among 4 starting modes on excitement method and energy supplement were discussed.Results show that the position-control mode has better starting performance than valve-control mode,and is suitable for a higher power occasion.Valve-control mode is applicable to a case with lower starting-frequency.

Abstract:Pneumatic dual reciprocating bellows pump has been widely used in chemical transportation due to its good sealing and anticorrosion performances. Nevertheless, the large outlet pulsation limits its performances on precise transportation and control of the fluid. Although the design of employing flexible linkage between the bellows has been proposed as an effective solution for this shortcoming, the design, manufacture, and control of the pump also become much more complicated. This paper presents a mathematical model to formulate the effects of structural, geometric, and control parameters to the output pulsation of pneumatic dual reciprocating bellows pump with flexible linkage. It is a dynamic model unifying several sub-models expressing the pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical parts in the pump, respectively. To ensure the accuracy, some special experiments are also employed to identify some key parameters in the model that cannot be determined directly. In addition, finite difference method is employed to solve the nonlinear equations. The model is well verified by comparing its computation results with experimental data. We believe that this study is valuable for guiding the design of pneumatic dual reciprocating bellows pump and optimizing its output pulsation.

A Quasi-Actual Mechatronic Instrument for Realistically Testing Roller-Piston Friction Pairs

Abstract:Cam-lobe radical-piston hydraulic motors can achieve ultrahigh power rotary output (up to megawatts), which are widely used in tunnel boring machines, dredgers, and other high-end equipment. In these applications, hydraulic motors always operate in complex and drastically changing conditions, causing their key roller-piston friction pairs to be vulnerable to wear and failure. However, there is a lack of easy-to-use and low-cost testing instruments to investigate the failure behavior of friction pairs and verify the reliability of the developed friction pairs. For that, this study developed a quasi-actual mechatronic instrument that can realistically reproduce various actual operating conditions to achieve quasi-actual testing of the friction pair. This instrument is composed of three parts: a testing bench, a hydraulic system, and a control system. The hydraulic system with a proportional relief valve is responsible for adjusting the hydraulic pressure on the piston in the testing bench, while the roller speed is controlled by a servo motor in the testing bench. To realize the quasi-actual control, an improved fuzzy PID and PI control algorithms embedded in the control system are proposed to real-time regulate the hydraulic pressure and roller speed, respectively. Finally, several quasi-actual testing experiments are conducted to reproduce different operating conditions of roller-piston friction pairs in a tunnel boring machine. The experimental results show that quasi-actual hydraulic pressures and roller speeds obtained from the developed mechatronic instrument are in good agreement with the actual operating data from the tunnel boring machine, indicating that the mechatronic instrument offers a feasible, easy-to-use, and quasi-actual way for testing roller-piston friction pairs.

Abstract:Due to high-power output (several thousand kW), hydraulic motors have been widely used in various types of large machinery, such as ships, dredgers, shield machines, and shredders. The oil distributor is a key component that can control the flow direction of inputting high-pressure oil and outputting low-pressure oil for the hydraulic motors to ensure their normal operation. However, there exist substantial challenges in solving the problems of the evident oil leak and power loss in the matching interface between the fixed oil distributor and the rotating cylinder block. For that, this study introduces a self-compensation oil distributor (SCOD), which can auto-adjust the interface spacing by adding balancing pistons and floating seal sleeves, thereby decreasing the oil leakage and the power loss caused by long-term interface wear and inevitable separating force. The balancing pistons and floating seal sleeves can provide a clamping force to balance the interface separating force with the help of hydraulic pressure and springs. Then, a theoretical model is developed to evaluate the oil leakage and power loss characteristics of the SCOD. Based on the model, the gap size between the balancing piston and the oil distributor, a significant parameter for the SCOD, is investigated and optimized. The results indicate that the experimental results show good agreement with the model predictions, and the preferable gap size of 5 μ m is obtained to ensure low oil leakage and power loss of hydraulic motors. The presented SCOD offers a feasible way to develop high-efficient hydraulic motors.

Abstract:A decentralized variable electric motor and fixed pump (VMFP) system with a four-chamber cylinder is proposed for mobile machinery, such that the energy efficiency can be improved by hydro-pneumatic energy storage, and problems of closed-circuit pump-controlled systems including asymmetrical flow and speed limitation are addressed. One of the chambers is arranged to the energy storage accumulator to increase energy efficiency, while the other chambers are flexibly connected to the pump ports to achieve variable transmission ratios. The piston areas of the multiple chambers are designed at first to permit a symmetric single-rod cylinder, and secondly a switching system with three operating modes is presented to expand force-velocity capabilities. Then, the four-chamber cylinder system with three solenoid valves is designed to substitute for the traditional two-chamber boom cylinder in a 6-ton excavator. A valve switching logic, as well as a feedforward and feedback compound speed controller, are presented. Simulations conducted in a 6-ton excavator model show that the maximum velocity increases by 66 %, together with asymmetrical flows to diminish the low-pressure charging accumulator. Peak power and energy consumption are both reduced by more than 20 % compared with the VMFP using the two-chamber cylinder. The energy-saving characteristics of the 6-ton excavator are emphatically analyzed considering energy storage and re-utilization. At last, experiment verifications are conducted in a lifting mechanism to verify the proposed energy-storage system.
