Abstract:Anthocyanin is a type of aqueous flavonoid pigments located in petals,fruits,stems,leaves and the rest of plants.Structures of anthocyanin and its relevant properties are stated.Plants rich in anthocyanins are listed,research on synthesis and degradation of anthocyanins is summarized and prospects for degradation of anthocyanins are finally discussed.

Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition

Abstract:Chlorophyll (Chl) is a natural pigment, widely distributed ranging from photosynthetic prokaryotes to higher plants, with an annual yield of up to 1.2 billion tons worldwide. Five types of Chls are observed in nature, that can be distinguished and identified using spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Chl is also used in the food industry owing to its bioactivities, including obesity prevention, inflammation reduction, viral infection inhibition, anticancer effects, anti-oxidation, and immunostimulatory properties. It has great potential of being applied as a colorant and dietary supplement in the food industry. However, Chl is unstable under various enzymatic, acidic, heat, and light conditions, which limit its application. Although some strategies, such as aggregation with other food components, microencapsulation, and metal cation replacement, have been proposed to overcome these limitations, they are still not enough to facilitate its widespread application. Therefore, stabilization strategies and bioactivities of Chl need to be expected to expand its application in various fields, thereby aiding in the sustainable development of mankind.

Abstract:Ephedra alkaloids,the active and toxic components in Ephedra Herba,are known to naturally exist in the form of three pairs of optically diastereoisomeric amphetamines.These alkoloids show not only the remarkable different pharmacological actiona among pairs,but also the different functions between a pair of diastereoisomer.In addition,the synthetic products of these several alkoloids always intermingles with a small quantity of enantiomers,which are regarded as impurities due to their inactivity.In order to reasonably control the quality of Ephedra sinica and its preparations,and ephedrine alkaloids products,it is necessary to assay diverse isomers including diastereoisomers and enantiomers being in samples.In recent years,the chiral analysis of ephedrine alkaloids become a hotspot.The recent review provides an overview of various chromatographic methods for the chiral analysis of the ephedrine alkaloids.Emphasis will be laid on the analytical methods of HPLC,GC,and CE,and the advantages and limitations of these methods are discussed as well.

Abstract:Microalgae are considered to be natural producers of bioactive pigments, with the production of pigments from microalgae being a sustainable and economical strategy that promises to alleviate growing demand. Chlorophyll, as the main pigment of photosynthesis, has been widely studied, but its medicinal applications as an antioxidant, antibacterial, and antitumor reagent are still poorly understood. Chlorophyll is the most important pigment in plants and algae, which not only provides food for organisms throughout the biosphere, but also plays an important role in a variety of human and man-made applications. The biological activity of chlorophyll is closely related to its chemical structure; its specific structure offers the possibility for its medicinal applications. This paper reviews the structural and functional roles of microalgal chlorophylls, commonly used extraction methods, and recent advances in medicine, to provide a theoretical basis for the standardization and commercial production and application of chlorophylls.

Abstract:The advances of the pigment analysis and chemotaxonomy of marine phytoplankton were re-viewed.It was indicated that the major trend of pigment analytical method was the application of High Resolution High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry(HR-HPLC-MS) method based on coupled columns.Reanalysis of the characteristic pigments using high resolution method would no doubt benefit for obtaining new understanding of the pigment distribution patterns among phytoplankton species.CHEMTAX was a tool of choice for the chemotaxonomy of marine phytoplankton macroscopical-ly.Successive runs of CHEMTAX could reduce its relying on initial pigment ratios,and the convergence of the different pigment ratios was directed towards the true value,therefore greatly improve the phyto-plankton biomass estimates.The development trend in the future would be the research of fine chemotax-onomic method of phytoplankton based on characteristic pigment ratio suites,and the application of ma-rine phytoplankton chemotaxonomy in understanding the role of phytoplankton types in the biogeochemi-cal cycle of biogenic elements and biominerals.

Abstract:Flavonoids are a group of natural polyphenolic substances that are abundant in vegetables, fruits, grains, and tea. Chiral A-ring-containing flavonoids are an important group of natural flavonoid derivatives applicable in a wide range of biological activities such as, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antioxidant, and enzyme inhibition. The desirable development of chiral A-ring-containing flavonoids by isolation, semi-synthesis or total synthesis in a short duration proves their great value in medicinal chemistry research. In this review, the research progress of chiral A-ring-containing flavonoids, including isolation and extraction, structural identification, pharmacological activities, and synthetic methods, is comprehensively and systematically summarized. Furthermore, we provide suggestions for future research on the synthesis and biomedical applications of flavonoids.

Abstract:In recent years, spectral analysis methods have developed rapidly. A key feature is the use of chemometric methods to process spectral data for performing qualitative and quantitative analysis of complex mixtures. The coupling of chemometric methods to spectroscopic techniques led to distinct advantages in speed, cost, efficiency, automation, and portability compared to the traditional methods in agriculture, food, pharmaceutical, petroleum, chemical, environmental, and medical fields. This paper comments on the review papers published during the past three years (2020–2022) on the topic of the combination of spectral and chemometric methods. The development status, existing challenges, and the future direction of this field is discussed.

Abstract:Flavonoids, one of the largest groups of secondary metabolites, are widespread in vegetable crops such as herbs, fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds and derived foods such as juices, wines, oils, etc. They receive considerable attention due to their biological and physiological importance. Hundreds of publications on the analysis of flavonoids have appeared over the past decade. Traditional and more advanced techniques have come to prominence for sample preparation, separation, detection, and identification. This review intends to provide an updated, concise overview on the recent development and trends of separation, identification and quantification for flavonoids by modern chromatographic and spectrophotometric analytical techniques, including gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), and capillary electrophoresis (CE). The sample preparation before analysis is also briefly summarized.
