Abstract:Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) has high sensitivity and can response to the change of trace matter on the surface of quartz crystal. QCM can be used to detect the mass change in nanogram scale and the thickness change in nanometer scale, which has extensive applications in diversely research fields of analytical chemistry. In this article, the working principle and basic equations of QCM were illustrated. The recent applications and advances of QCM analysis in the studies of polymer thin film were then reviewed, including the measurement of thickness and mechanical properties of the polymer thin film, the adsorption and conformation evolution of polymer chains on the surface of quartz crystal, the polymerization kinetics of surface initiated polymer brushes, chemical- and bio-sensors based on functional polymer thin film and QCM, and so on. The further applications and development of QCM analysis in the research field of polymer thin film were also discussed.

Abstract:This paper is mainly introduce a novel gas sensor QCM (Quartz Crystal Microbalance), which has the characteristics of high sensitivity, high stability, and strong anti jamming ability. And it can be used in many fields. We study on the law of QCM responding to expiratory gases. Using a computational chemistry method, we can easily design sensitive film of sensor, and make it by the electropolymerization theory. We also design a measurement systems and use a IEEE488 card to connect measurement equipment. And we get the response data of expiratory gases from the QCM gas sensor. So we have the conclusion that the QCM gas sensor can be used in measuring acetone gas in breath.

Abstract:Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) sensors are actively being implemented in various fields due to their compatibility with different operating conditions in gaseous/liquid mediums for a wide range of measurements. This trend has been matched by the parallel advancement in tailored electronic interfacing systems for QCM sensors. That is, selecting the appropriate electronic circuit is vital for accurate sensor measurements. Many techniques were developed over time to cover the expanding measurement requirements (e.g., accommodating highly-damping environments). This paper presents a comprehensive review of the various existing QCM electronic interfacing systems. Namely, impedance-based analysis, oscillators (conventional and lock-in based techniques), exponential decay methods and the emerging phase-mass based characterization. The aforementioned methods are discussed in detail and qualitatively compared in terms of their performance for various applications. In addition, some theoretical improvements and recommendations are introduced for adequate systems implementation. Finally, specific design considerations of high-temperature microbalance systems (e.g., GaPO₄ crystals (GCM) and Langasite crystals (LCM)) are introduced, while assessing their overall system performance, stability and quality compared to conventional low-temperature applications.

Abstract:Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is a nondestructive technique in investigating the physical properties of solid-liquid interfacial layer in situ. It has the capability of quantifying the extremely tiny force change occurring on the interface by measuring the frequency shift Δ f and the energy dissipation change Δ D (or the half-bandwidth variation Δ Γ). The quantitative analysis of QCM results greatly depends on the theoretical models, whose development could generally expand the comprehension of the properties at the interfaces and the application of QCM. In the paper, the progresses on the theory and applications of QCM are reviewed. The commonly used theoretical models for a single layer in the gas/liquid phase are essential for QCM in the fields of biosensor application, surface chemistry study, and interfacial rheology, such as the adsorption of proteins, the polymer and surfactants, and the viscoelastic properties of the interfacial liquid layer. Abstract:A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) consists of a resonator, which measures the resonance frequency of the quartz slab. When coupled with a network analyzer or coupled with impulse excitation technology, QCM gives additional impedance or dissipation information, respectively. This report provides a set of equations that bring the QCM community a convergence of the dissipation and impedance analysis. Equations derived from the complex frequency shift were applied to quantitatively analyze the dissipation data of polymer brushes obtained from QCM-D. The obtained viscoelastic properties of polymer brushes were then compared with those obtained by the Voigt model method. We believe that these equations will be useful in quantitative studies of interfacial phenomena accompanied with mass or viscoelasticity changes.

Abstract:The application of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) in the study of atmospheric corrosion is reviewed. QCM is available to measure mass changes of a nanngram order and has widely been used for in-situ investigations of atmospheric corrosion. The effects of environmental factors,corrosive gas constituents and gas-phase inhibitors on the atmospheric corrosion mechanism of metal materials have been studied with QCM. Abstract:Wireless sensor technology is a facile way of realizing low cost and miniaturized device for the detection of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A wireless electrodeless quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (WE-QCM-D) sensor array was developed by using a single sensor working in a multi-resonance mode, which obtained an acoustic spectra of the quartz crystal at four harmonics (6 MHz, 18 MHz, 30 MHz and 42 MHz). Multi-responses (frequency shift, and energy dissipation) of WE-QCM-D sensor array were obtained via a ring-down mode and employed as discrimination factors for VOCs. The gas discrimination capability of the WE-QCM-D sensor array has been tested by coating a 100 mu g polyvinylpyrrolidone film on the quartz disc and achieved an optimal recognition rate of 97.5 % with K nearest neighbor algorithm. The results indicate that the single element WE-QCM-D sensor array could be a promising way to realize compact and low-cost VOCs monitoring systems. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Online real-time detection is crucial for biochemical and healthcare monitoring. Methods that could conduct the measurements in low-volume analytes are essentially required. A wireless electrodeless quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (WE-QCM-D) based sensor was proposed to realize realtime pH monitoring in low-volume solutions. The WE-QCM-D pH sensor was fabricated by coating with a pH-sensitive poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) (poly (HEMA-co-MAA)) film and observed the dynamic pH variation in the range from 4 to 9. The sensitivity of the WE-QCM-D pH sensor nearby the pKa was 1.47 V/pH and the maximum response time was around 80 s. The pH sensor performed well in synthetic urines with a measurement deviation less than 1% compared with that measured by a pH meter and reversible responses has been achieved when 140 mu l buffer solutions at pH 4.18, 5.6 and 7.62 were loaded on the quartz disc that was located in a glass vial. The results indicated that the WE-QCM-D pH sensor could be potentially used for online low volume detections. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is described, which is based on a torsional resonator, rather than a conventional thickness-shear resonator. Typical applications are measurements of film thickness in the coating industry and monitoring of biofouling. The torsional QCM is about a factor of 100 less sensitive than the conventional QCM. On the other hand, it can probe film thicknesses in the range of hundreds of microns, which is impossible with the conventional QCM due to viscoelastic artifacts. Data acquisition and data analysis proceed in analogy to the conventional QCM. An indicator of the material's softness can be extracted from the bandwidth of the resonance. Within the small-load approximation, the frequency shift is independent of whether the sample is applied to the face or to the side of the cylinder. Details of the geometry matter if the viscoelastic properties of the sample are of interest. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Based on the characteristic damping theory of a quartz-crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor, this paper introduces a new concept: a characteristic damping vector to analyse the loading variation in a complex situation. Two typical physical processes, evaporation of solution and deliquescence of a salt crystal, are chosen to study the behaviour of the QCM sensor in the process of complex loading variation. The experimental result fits the theory well, and the theory has been further verified.

Abstract:Mass sensitivity plays a crucial role in the practical application of quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs)-based quantitative analysis. n-m type QCMs have many applications, so it is necessary to clarify the relationship between the mass sensitivity and the electrode of the n-m type QCM. The performance of gold-plated films with different electrodes was studied by theoretical calculation and experiment. The results show that the mass sensitivity on the surface of the n electrode and the surface of the m electrode are essentially the same. Meanwhile, the mass sensitivity of n-m type QCMs varies with the diameter of the n and m electrodes. When the diameter of the n electrode is close to half the diameter of the m electrode, mass sensitivity is at maximum value. These results are important for the further designs and applications of n-m type QCMs.

Abstract:Supercritical fluid(SCF) technology is an important field of green chemistry.Due to the restriction of high pressure,most traditional detection methods are not applicable to obtaining the data of physical and chemical properties,which greatly affects the research and applications of SCF.Quartz crystal microbalance(QCM) is a new sub-micro weighing technique that can work under extreme conditions,such as high temperature,high pressure with good precision.Therefore it can be conveniently used for the detection of SCF processes.Combining with the research work in our laboratory,the paper introduces the fundamental theory and characteristics of QCM,and especially reviews and predicts the applications of QCM in supercritical carbon dioxide(ScCO2).

Abstract:Quartz Crystal Microbalances (QCMs) are versatile sensors employed in various fields, from environmental monitoring to biomedical applications, owing mainly to their very high sensitivity. However, the assessment of their metrological performance, including the impact of conditioning circuits, digital processing algorithms, and working conditions, is a complex and novel area of study. The purpose of this work is to investigate and understand the measurement errors associated with different QCM measurement techniques, specifically focusing on the influence of conditioning electronic circuits. Through a tailored and novel experimental setup, two measurement architectures—a Quartz Crystal Microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) system and an oscillator-based QCM-R system—were compared under the same mechanical load conditions. Through rigorous experimentation and signal processing techniques, the study elucidated the complexities of accurately assessing QCM parameters, especially in liquid environments and under large mechanical loads. The comparison between the two different techniques allows for highlighting the critical aspects of the measurement techniques. The experimental results were discussed and interpreted based on models allowing for a deep understanding of the measurement problems encountered with QCM-based measurement systems. The performance of the different techniques was derived, showing that while the QCM-D technique exhibited higher accuracy, the QCM-R technique offered greater precision with a simpler design. This research advances our understanding of QCM-based measurements, providing insights for designing robust measurement systems adaptable to diverse conditions, thus enhancing their effectiveness in various applications.

Abstract:Herein the development and application of Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance (EQCM) sensing to study metal electroplating, especially for energy storage purposes, are reviewed. The roles of EQCM in describing electrode/electrolyte interface dynamics, such as the electric double-layer build-up, ionic/molecular adsorption, metal nucleation, and growth, are addressed. Modeling of the QCM sensor is introduced and its importance is emphasized. Challenges of metal electrode use, including side reactions and dendrite formation, along with their mitigation strategies are reviewed. Numerous factors affecting the electroplating processes, such as electrolyte composition, additives, temperature, and current density, and their influence on the electroplated metals’ mass, structural, and mechanical characteristics are discussed. Looking forward, the need for deeper fundamental understanding and advancing simulations of the QCM signal response as a result of electroplating metal nanostructures is stressed. Further development and integration of innovative EQCM-strategies will provide unique future means to fundamentally understand and optimize metal electroplating for energy storage and application alike.

Abstract:With the in-depth application of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM)sensors in thefields of science and engineering, there is an urgent need for QCMsensors with high mass sensitivity. The mass sensitivity of a QCM is closely related toits resonance frequency, and the high resonance frequency leads to improve its masssensitivity. However, the resonance frequency of a QCM resonator cannot beincreased all the time due to the fragility of quartz wafer and the limits of energytrapping effect. Few studies are associated with mass sensitivity of a QCM resonatorunder overtone modes. Herein, we propose to make a QCM resonator work in itsn-th overtone (n= 3, 5, 7, 9 in this study) mode to increase its resonance frequencyduring operating. Thereby, the purpose of improving QCM mass sensitivity isachieved, and the mass sensitivity of a QCM working in then-th overtone mode canbe called asn-th overtone mass sensitivity. Then, then-th overtone mass sensitivity ofa QCM sensor is measured by an electrodeposition method. The experimental resultsshow that then-th overtone mass sensitivity of a QCM is a bit more thanntimes that of the fundamental mass sensitivity, and it isconsistent with the theoretical calculation results. The application of overtone mass sensitivity will greatly improve the sensitivity ofQCM sensors, which is very attractive for the researchfields that require QCM sensors with high sensitivity.
Analysis of Quality Factor of the Quartz Crystal Resonator with N-M Asymmetric Electrodes

Abstract:Recently, the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) with N-M asymmetric electrodes has been reported to improve significantly its sensitivity. As a main part of QCM, the performance of quartz crystal resonator is directly related to QCM sensor. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a high performance of quartz crystal resonator. Considering that the quality (Q) factor is one of the most important parameters to the quartz crystal resonator. However, there is few studies to report the Q-factor of QCM resonator with N-M asymmetric electrodes. Herein, we investigate the Q-factor of QCM resonator with N-M asymmetric electrodes. The experimental results show that their Q-factors are larger than 15000, and all half bandwidths are less than 650 Hz. These performance parameters show that the QCM with N-M asymmetric electrodes have excellent stability and they can be reliably applied in many fields.
