Abstract:Mercury emission has become a great environmental concern because of its high toxicity, bioaccumulation, and persistence. Adsorption is an effective method to remove Hg0 from coal-fired flue gas, with adsorbents playing a dominant role. Extensive investigations have been conducted on the use of CuO-based materials for Hg0 removal, and some fruitful results have been obtained. In this review, we summarize advances in the application of CuO-based materials for Hg0 capture. Firstly, the fundamentals of CuO, including its crystal information and synthesis methods, are introduced. Then, the Hg0 removal capability of some typical CuO-based adsorbents is discussed. Considering that coal-fired flue gas also contains a certain amount of NO, SO2, H2O, NH3, and HCl, the impacts of these species on adsorbent Hg0 removal efficiency are summarized next. By generalizing the mechanisms dominating the Hg0 removal process, the rate-determining step and the key intermediates can be discovered. Apart from Hg0, some other air pollutants, such as CO, NOx, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), account for a certain portion of flue gas. In view of their similar abatement mechanisms, simultaneous removal of Hg0 and other air pollutants has become a hot topic in the environmental field. Considering the Hg0 re-emission phenomena in wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD), mercury capture performance under different conditions in this device is discussed. Finally, we conclude that new adsorbents suitable for long-term operation in coal-fired flue gas should be developed to realize the effective reduction of mercury emissions.

Abstract:Magnetic manganese-iron modified attapulgite sorbents (xMnFAy) were synthesized and employed for Hg0 removal from coal-fired flue gas. The effects of calcination temperature, MnO2 loading amount, reaction temperature, as well as the individual flue gas components on Hg0 removal were investigated. The 0.1MnFA loaded with 10 wt% MnO2 and calcined at 450 °C exhibited the optimal Hg0 removal activity, above 80% Hg0 removal at a high GHSV of 4 × 105 h−1. O2 promoted Hg0 removal via recovering surface oxygen and high valence metal ions (Fe3+ and Mn4+). NO improved Hg0 capture due to the formation of adsorbed NO2 and nitrate species, which functioned as active sites for mercury oxidation. SO2 prohibited Hg0 retention because of its competitive adsorption against Hg0 for the active sites and the sulfation of the sorbent. Besides, SO2 could reduce the high valence metal ions to a lower valence, which hampers Hg0 oxidation. The presence of NO could overcome the inhibitive effect of SO2 on Hg0 removal because the adsorbed NO2 and nitrate species were still retained on the sorbent surface in the case of SO2 existence·H2O inhibited Hg0 removal because of the competitive adsorption. 0.1MnFA could maintain its good Hg0 retention ability after five regeneration cycles. This work contributes to developing the cost-effective sorbents for Hg0 removal from coal-fired flue gas, as well as maximizing the utilization of attapulgite clay.

Abstract:Samples of magnetic iron-manganese binary oxide supported on activated carbon fiber (Fe3-xMnxO4/CNF) were prepared for Hg-0 removal from flue gas. The results showed that the Hg0 removal performance of Fe(3-x)MnxO(4)/CNF was significantly promoted with the increase of Mn incorporating content into Fe3O4 spinel structure. The optimal sample of Fe2MnO4/CNF, at the optimal reaction temperature of 150-200 degrees C, attained above 90% of Hg-0 removal efficiency (Ea). CNF played an important role in Hg0 removal by Fe(3-x)MnxO(4)/CNF due to the disperation of Fe(3-x)MnxO(4) particles and the enhancement for electron transfer process. O-2 enhanced the Hg-0 removal via the Mars-Maessen mechanism, and NO improved the Hg-0 removal performance slightly because of the formation of NO2. SO2 and H2O played an inhibitive role in Hg-0 removal due to the competition of active sites for Hg0 adsorption. A mechanism of Hg-0 removal over Fe(3-x)MnxO(4)/CNF is proposed, in which both Mn cations and lattice/chemisorbed oxygen were thought to the active sites for Hg-0 adsorption/oxidation. Further, the spent Fe3-xMnxO4/CNF could be regenerated with no obvious decrease of Hg-0 removal performance by water washing followed by thermal treatment at 450 degrees C in N-2 and calcination at 200 degrees C in air.
Elemental Mercury Oxidation over Manganese-Based Perovskite-Type Catalyst at Low Temperature

Abstract:La1-xSrxMnO3 (LSx, x = 0/0.2/0.4/0.6) perovskite-type oxides catalysts were synthesized for elemental mercury (Hg-0) oxidation in simulated coal-fired flue gas at low temperature. LS0.4 exhibited superior catalytic behavior for Hg-0 oxidation at 100-200 degrees C. The superior performance was mainly due to the surface adsorbed oxygen species in the catalysts. Effects of different components in the flue gas including HCI, O-3, SO2, H2O, NO and NH3 on Hg-0 oxidation efficiencies were studied. The results suggested that HCI significantly enhanced Hg-0 oxidation efficiency in the presence of O-2 and 10 ppmv HCI was sufficient for enhancing the oxidation process. As the catalyst had strong oxygen storage capacity, the Hg-0 oxidation activity was less dependent on O-2 concentration. As a result, the catalyst could be applied in the power plants burning low-chlorine coals. SO2, H2O and NH3 had inhibitory effect on Hg-0 oxidation, while NO enhanced it. SO2 could deactivate the catalyst and the deactivation was irreversible. In terms of mechanism, Hg-0 oxidation with LSx could be explained by the suprafacial process (Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism) whereby reactive species from adsorbed flue gas components reacted with adsorbed Hg-0. The catalyst also had potential for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 at low temperature, and the simultaneous removal of NO and Hg-0 over LS0.4 was investigated. The NO and Hg-0 conversion were higher than 50% and 85% when the space velocity was 40,000 h(-1), respectively. The results indicated that the catalyst might be used to remove NO and Hg-0 simultaneously after the cold-side electrostatic precipitators in flue gas with low concentration of ash. Abstract:In the work, sulfur-containing sorbents were employed to remove elemental mercury (Hg0) from coal-fired flue gas. The work used the thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to characterize the physicochemical properties of the sorbents. The Hg0 removal performance of these used sorbents from the simulated coal-fired flue gas was evaluated by a bench-scale fixed-bed reactor. The results indicated that a generous amount of elemental sulfur covered the surface and pore structure of the used sorbent. With the rise of H2S selective oxidation temperature, both the sulfur content and specific surface area decreased rapidly. Used-Fe/SC120 could achieve the mercury removal efficiency of above 90% at 90 °C. The high temperature was not conducive to the mercury capture due to the release of surface elemental sulfur. The presence of O2 and SO2 inhibited Hg0 removal in different degrees because of the decreased active sulfur sites and competitive adsorption. Meanwhile, NO promoted the Hg0 removal efficiency by enhancing the Hg0 oxidation. The further analysis showed that the surface elemental sulfur was vital to capture the Hg0 from coal-fired flue gas, which reacted with Hg0 to form HgS.

Abstract:A dual-functional MnO2/La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 composite catalyst was prepared and tested for the oxidation of elemental mercury (Hg-0) present in the coal-derived flue gas. The thus derived Hg2+ can then be removed from the flue gas via current pollution control devices. The MnO2 appears as the active component for the oxidation of elemental mercury, whereas the superior magnetic property of La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 catalytic component makes the catalyst recoverable from the fly-ash mixture. The Hg-0 oxidation efficiency was found larger than 80% in the temperature range of 150-300 degrees C and at a GHSV of 120,000 mL/(g h), whereas the catalytic efficiency could be further increased to > 95% in the presence of 5 ppm HCl in the flue gas.

Abstract:A stoichiometric nanosized Mn-Fe spinel (Fe(2.2)Mn(0.8)O(4)) was synthesized using a coprecipitation method. After the thermal treatment at 400 degrees C under air, chemical heterogeneity deriving from the oxidation kinetic difference between Fe(2+) and Mn(2+)/Mn(3+) was observed in (Fe(2.2)Mn(0.8))(1-delta)O(4). XPS and TEM analyses both pointed a Mn enrichment (especially Mn(4+) cation) on the particle's surface. Furthermore, the percent of cation vacancy on the surface increased obviously due to the enrichment of Mn(4+) cation on the surface. As a result, the capacity of (Fe(2.2)Mn(0.8))(1-delta)O(4)-400 for elemental mercury capture was generally much better than those of MnO(x)/gamma-Fe(2)O(3), (Fe(2.2)Mn(0.8))(1-delta)O(4)-200 and Fe(2.2)Mn(0.8)O(4). Furthermore, the saturation magnetization of (Fe(2.2)Mn(0.8))(1-delta)O(4) obviously increased after the thermal treatment under air at 400 degrees C, which made it easier to separate the sorbent and adsorbed mercury from the fly ash for recycling, regeneration, and safe disposal of the adsorbed mercury. Therefore, (Fe(2.2)Mn(0.8))(1-delta)O(4)-400 may be a promising sorbent for elemental mercury capture.

Abstract:A series of MnOx modified TiO2 based sorbents were synthesized using wet impregnation method and its performance on elemental mercury (Hg0) removal was studied. The effects of loading amount, calcination temperature, reaction temperature, and flue gas compositions on mercury removal efficiency were investigated. The sorbents were characterized by TGA, N2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, FT-IR, XPS and Hg-TPD. It was shown that the optimum MnOx loading value was 12%, and the optimal calcination and reaction temperature were 450 and 300°C, respectively. The highest mercury removal efficiency of MnOx-TiO2 sorbent was 98.46%. O2 and HCl in flue gas played a positive role in mercury removal. SO2 had a strong inhibitory effect on mercury removal, which may be due to the competition adsorption between SO2 and Hg0. At the same time, the manganese sulfate produced during the reaction covered the surface of the active site, resulting in the decrease in mercury removal efficiency. CO2 and NO in flue gas also slightly inhibited mercury removal. Mn4+ participated in oxidizing Hg0 to Hg2+, accompanied with its reduction to Mn3+. The adsorption and oxidation process of Hg0 over MnOx-TiO2 basically conformed to Mars-Maessen and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism.
Removal of elemental mercury from flue gas by supported MnOx/ Al2O3 catalyst at low temperature

Abstract:Aiming at the difficulty of Hg0 removal from flue gas with its indissolubility in water, a series of studies on the characteristics of elemental mercury (Hg0) catalytic oxidation removal from simulated flue gas were carried out with a laboratory-scale fixed-bed reactor using the MnOx/Al2O3 catalysts prepared by the wet impregnation method. The effects of precursor, MnOx content, calcination temperature, reaction temperature and flue gas compositions on the removal of Hg0 were also investigated. The characteristics of the catalysts were analyzed using the method of nitrogen adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The result shows that the catalyst prepared with manganese nitrate exhibits a higher Hg0 removal efficiency than the catalyst prepared with manganese acetate. The main active component of the MnOx/Al2O3 catalyst is MnO2, and the surface morphology and species form of MnOx are the main factors for getting an excellent Hg0 removal efficiency. The mercury removal results indicate that at low MnOx content, the precursor shows great impact on mercury removal, while the difference of Hg0 capture efficiency gradually decreases with the increase of MnOx loading. For the MnOx/Al2O3 catalyst, the optimal reaction temperature and calcination temperature are 150°C and 400°C, respectively. The oxygen from the flue gas, which replenishes the lattice oxygen of the catalyst consumed, can promote the catalytic oxidation of Hg0. To some extent, the NO, SO2 and H2O displays inhibitory effects on Hg0 removal. The influence of SO2 is the highest, followed by H2O and NO.
Fe–Mn–Ce/ceramic Powder Composite Catalyst for Highly Volatile Elemental Mercury Removal in Simulated Coal-Fired Flue Gas

Abstract:The Fe–Mn–Ce/CP catalyst prepared by the incipient-wetness impregnation method was investigated for elemental mercury (Hg0) removal in simulated coal-fired flue gas. The incorporation of Fe could remarkably enhance the SO2-resistance of Fe–Mn–Ce/CP catalyst at low temperature, and the existence of water vapor had negative impact on Hg0 removal efficiency. More than 95% of Hg0 could be removed at 100°C under the conditions of 60ppm HCl, 3% O2 (v/v), 5% H2O (v/v) and 400ppm SO2. Hg-TPD results indicated that Hg0 adsorption amount decreased after the addition of H2O or SO2. The XPS results revealed that the incorporation of Fe could enhance the contents of high valence Mnx+ (i.e., Mn3+/Mn4+) and Ce3+ species in the composite catalysts, which are favorable for the oxidation process of elemental mercury. The surface characteristics were not the primary factor determining the catalytic activity. Overall, the catalytic performance of the Fe–Mn–Ce/CP catalyst was closely related to the Fe3+ state, high ratios of (Mn4++Mn3+)/Mn2+ and high content of not fully coordinated cerium species.
Adsorption and oxidation of elemental mercury from coal-fired flue gas over activated coke loaded with Mn–Ni oxides

Abstract:A series of Mn–Ni/AC (AC, activated coke) catalysts were synthesized by the impregnation method for the removal of elemental mercury (Hg0) from simulated flue gas. The samples were characterized by BET, ICP-OES, SEM, XRD, XPS, H2-TPR, FT-IR, and TGA. Mn6Ni0.75/AC exhibited optimal removal efficiency of 96.6% in the condition of 6% O2 and balanced in N2 at 150 °C. The experimental results showed that both O2 and NO facilitated Hg0 removal. SO2 could restrain the Hg0 removal in the absence of O2, while the inhibitory effect of SO2 was weakened with the aid of 6% O2. In addition, H2O exhibited a slightly negative influence on Hg0 removal. The characterization of the samples indicated that Mn6Ni0.75/AC possessed larger specific surface area, higher dispersion of metal oxides, and stronger redox ability. In the meantime, the results of XPS and FT-IR demonstrated that the lattice oxygen and chemisorbed oxygen made contributions to Hg0 removal and the consumed oxygen could be compensated by the redox cycle of metal oxides and gas-phase O2. Meanwhile, the mechanisms of Hg0 removal were proposed based on the above studies.

Abstract:A series of novel magnetic Cu0.3Fe2.7-xTixO4 composites was synthesized and used as recyclable heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts for gaseous elemental mercury (Hg-0) removal from simulated flue gases. The technique of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) were used, and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) analysis was achieved to determine the chemical composition, pore structure, and surface chemistry of the catalysts. The performance of heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions for Hg-0 removal was investigated in a bench-scale bubbling reactor under neutral condition. Some main parameters such as Cu/Ti ratio in the catalysts, H2O2 concentration, solution pH, and gas flow were systematically studied to establish optimal reaction conditions. The effects of SO2 and NO on Hg-0 removal were also analyzed. Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analysis suggested the Cu0.3Fe2.7-xTixO4 catalysts can be manipulated by an external magnetic field, and have potential advantages in terms of separation and recovery. Hg-0 removal remained efficient after five repeated experiments with only a slight decrease. Mercury Removal over Ce-doped LaCoO3 Supported on CeO2 at Low Temperatures from Coal Combustion Flue Gas

Abstract:Mercury has a significant impact on environment and is mainly derived from coal-fired power plant. Herein, we report a potential route for efficient removal of Hg0 via oxidation reactions using Ce-doped LaCoO3 supported on CeO2 catalyst. Catalyst characterization results proved that Ce can successfully substitute a desired part of Co into the LaCoO3 crystal lattice via a sol-gel method. The Hg0 removal experiments suggest that Hg0 removal effi-ciency decreased in the order of La0.875Ce0.125CoO3/CeO2 > La0.875Ce0.125CoO3 > LaCoO3. The presence of O2 provided more active oxygen and resulted in approaching 100% Hg0 removal efficiency. Introducing H2O and sole SO2 would significantly reduce the Hg0 removal efficiency as a result of competitive adsorption on the actives sites of the catalyst. On the other hand, SO2 could reacted with Hg0 in the presence of O2 and thereby recover the high Hg0 removal efficiency and the La0.875Ce0.125CoO3/CeO2 catalyst presented a good performance towards sulfur resistance. Furthermore, the catalyst still exhibited a high Hg0 removal efficiency performance after five times consecutive recycles.

Abstract:Magnetospheres (MF) obtained from fly ash by magnetic separation method has low mercury removal efficiency and weak magnetism in gas phase mercury removal. In this paper, magnetospheres were modified with Cu and Fe compounds by sol-gel method. The Hg-0 removal performance of Cu-Fe modified MF were investigated in a fixed bed reactor, and the effect of calcination temperature and flue gas composition on magnetism of the modified MF were examined. The Hg-0 removal efficiency of Cu(6)Fe-MF-400, which was obtained with 6 wt% Cu loading on MF, Cu:Fe atomic ratio being 1:2 and calcined at 400 degrees C, reaches 97% at 200 degrees C in the atmosphere of N-2, CO2 and O-2. Specific magnetic susceptibility of Cu(6)Fe-MF-400 enhances significantly from 41 to 52 cm(3)/g. The effect of flue gas composition on Hg-0 removal indicated that HCl significantly shortens the required time to achieve 80% efficiency of Hg-0 removal, while NO and SO2 prolong this required time. In the reaction temperature range of 100-350 degrees C, the required time decreases with the increase of temperature, and it is three seconds at temperature of 300 degrees C. The magnetism of Cu(6)Fe-MF is significantly weakened in atmosphere containing HCl or SO2, but strengthened in NO. Cu(6)Fe-MF still shows stable Hg-0 removal efficiency and magnetism after reaction for 10 h. Cu-Fe modified not only make MF to be used for mercury control of coal-fired flue gas, but enables reuse of coal-fired waste-MF, which is in line with the principles of circular economics.

Abstract:A series of HZSM-5 zeolite loading MnO_x were prepared by impregnation method to investigate their removal characteristics of Hg~0 in experimental flue gas,and characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and surface area measurement(BET) methods.These experimental results suggested that HZSM-5 had good activity on removing Hg~0 in the presence of 6%O_2.After loading active components MnO_x on HZSM-5 zeolite,the removal efficiency of Hg~0 could be increased,and the best loading amount was 10%.Rising reaction temperature appropriately could enhance the removal efficiency of Hg~0,and the optimum temperature was 300℃.O_2 in flue gas could promote the oxidation of Hg~0 while NO and SO_2 inhibited the mercury oxidation due to the competition of active sites on MnO_x/HZSM-5 sorbents with Hg~0. Additionally,it was verified that Hg~0 on MnO_x/HZSM-5 adsorbents was mainly oxidized into HgO,which agreed with the Mars-Maessen mechanism to a certain extent.

Abstract:Elemental mercury (Hg0) removal from containing SO2/NO simulated flue gas was systematically investigated, making use of Fe2.45Ti0.55O4/H2O2 advanced oxidation processes. The effectiveness follows from the hydroxyl radicals (OH) with the inherent character of non-selectivity and high activity, which can oxidize and remove Hg0 under solvent free conditions. The magnetically separable Fe2.45Ti0.55O4 catalyst was prepared by chemical co-precipitation method, and characterized by the techniques of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and electron spin resonance (ESR). The performance of Hg0 removal in Fe2.45Ti0.55O4/H2O2 solutions was carried out, and the effects of the most relevant operational parameters, such as solution pH values, catalyst dosage, and solution temperature, of the advanced oxidation processes were specifically studied. A high efficiency of Hg0 removal was obtained under optimum operational parameters (about 96% with 0.5M H2O2 at weak acid medium). The optimal pH value, catalyst dosage, and solution temperature are found at about 6, 0.6gL−1, and 50°C, respectively. The presence of SO2 in simulated flue gases has little effect on Hg0 removal, while NO intensively promotes Hg0 removal in advanced oxidation reactions. The activity of Fe2.45Ti0.55O4 catalyst undergoes decay to some extent after three consecutive experiments have been conducted.

Abstract:La0.8Ce0.2MnO3 perovskite catalyst was employed for elemental mercury (Hg-0) oxidation in coal combustion flue gas. The effects of flue gas components, including O-2, NO, SO2, HCl, H2O as well as the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reductant (NH3), on Hg-0 oxidation were investigated systematically. Above 90% Hg-0 oxidation was obtained at 200 degrees C under simulated flue gas (SFG) and SCR atmosphere with a gas hourly space velocity of 60,000 h(-1). Gaseous O-2 regenerated and replenished surface oxygen, hence promoting the oxidation of Hg-0. NO promoted the Hg-0 oxidation because of the formation of active surface species like NO2. HCl facilitated the Hg-0 oxidation, and 98.8% Hg-0 oxidation was obtained under the atmosphere containing 10 ppm HCl in the co-presence of O-2. SO2 inhibited Hg-0 oxidation because of the irreversible damage on catalytic activity by reacting with the active species on the catalyst center dot H2O also inhibited Hg-0 oxidation due to the change of catalyst surface chemistry as well as the consumption of active surface chlorine species (Cl*). NH3 competed active sites with Hg-0 and induced oxidized mercury reduction, hence limiting the Hg-0 conversion. However, the inhibitive effect of NH3 could be partly offset by the promotional effect of NO. This work clarified the effects of flue gas compositions on Hg0 oxidation over a novel La0.8Ce0.2MnO3 perovskite catalyst, which is essential for further improving the catalyst activity.

Abstract:A catalyst composed of manganese oxides supported on titania (MnOx/TiO2) synthesized by a sol-gel method was selected to remove nitric oxide and mercury jointly at a relatively low temperature in simulated flue gas from coal-fired power plants. The physico-chemical characteristics of catalysts were investigated by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, etc. The effects of Mn loading, reaction temperature and individual flue gas components on denitration and Hg0 removal were examined. The results indicated that the optimal Mn/Ti molar ratio was 0.8 and the best working temperature was 240°C for NO conversion. O2 and a proper ratio of [NH3]/[NO] are essential for the denitration reaction. Both NO conversion and Hg0 removal efficiency could reach more than 80% when NO and Hg0 were removed simultaneously using Mn0.8Ti at 240°C. Hg0 removal efficiency slightly declined as the Mn content increased in the catalysts. The reaction temperature had no significant effect on Hg0 removal efficiency. O2 and HCl had a promotional effect on Hg0 removal. SO2 and NH3 were observed to weaken Hg0 removal because of competitive adsorption. NO first facilitated Hg0 removal and then had an inhibiting effect as NO concentration increased without O2, and it exhibited weak inhibition of Hg0 removal efficiency in the presence of O2. The oxidation of Hg0 on MnOx/TiO2 follows the Mars-Maessen and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanisms.

Abstract:MnO(x)-CeO(2) mixed-oxide supported on TiO(2) (Mn-Ce/Ti) was synthesized by an ultrasound-assisted impregnation method and employed to oxidize elemental mercury (Hg(0)) at 200°C in simulated coal combustion flue gas. Over 90% of Hg(0) oxidation was achieved on the Mn-Ce/Ti catalyst at 200°C under simulated flue gas representing those from burning low-rank coals with a high gas hourly space velocity of 60,000 h(-1). Gas-phase O(2) regenerated the lattice oxygen and replenished the chemisorbed oxygen, which facilitated Hg(0) oxidation. HCl was the most effective flue gas component responsible for Hg(0) oxidation. 10 ppm HCl plus 4% O(2) resulted in 100% Hg(0) oxidation under the experimental conditions. SO(2) competed with Hg(0) for active sites, thus deactivating the catalyst's capability in oxidizing Hg(0). NO covered the active sites and consumed surface oxygen active for Hg(0) oxidation, hence limiting Hg(0) oxidation. Water vapor showed prohibitive effect on Hg(0) oxidation due to its competition with HCl and Hg(0) for active adsorption sites. This study provides information about the promotional or inhibitory effects of individual flue gas components on Hg(0) oxidation over a highly effective Mn-Ce/Ti catalyst. Such knowledge is of fundamental importance for industrial applications of the Mn-Ce/Ti catalyst in coal-fired power plants.

Abstract:A series of nanosized (Fe3-xMnx)1-δO4 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8) were synthesized for elemental mercury capture from the flue gas. Cation vacancies on (Fe3-xMnx)1-δO4 can provide the active sites for elemental mercury adsorption, and Mn(4+) cations on (Fe3-xMnx)1-δO4 may be the oxidizing agents for elemental mercury oxidization. With the increase of Mn content in the spinel structure, the percents of Mn(4+) cations and cation vacancies on the surface increased. As a result, elemental mercury capture by (Fe3-xMnx)1-δO4 was obviously promoted with the increase of Mn content. (Fe2.2Mn0.8)1-δO4 showed an excellent capacity for elemental mercury capture (>1.5 mg g(-1) at 100-300 °C) in the presence of SO2 and HCl. Furthermore, (Fe2.2Mn0.8)1-δO4 with the saturation magnetization of 45.6 emu g(-1) can be separated from the fly ash using magnetic separation, leaving the fly ash essentially free of sorbent and adsorbed Hg. Therefore, nanosized (Fe2.2Mn0.8)1-δO4 may be a promising sorbent for the control of elemental mercury emission.
