Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:Efficient deoxygenation of lignin-derived bio-oils is central to their adoption as precursors to sustainable liquid fuels in place of current fossil resources. In-situ catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH), using isopropanol and formic acid as solvent and in-situ hydrogen sources, was demonstrated over metal-doped and promoted MCM-41 for the depolymerization of oxygen-rich (35.85 wt%) lignin from Chinese fir sawdust (termed O-lignin). A NiMo/Al-MCM-41 catalyst conferred an optimal lignin-derived oil yield of 61.6 wt% with a comparatively low molecular weight (Mw =542 g mol-1 , Mn =290 g mol-1 ) and H/C ratio of 1.39. High selectivity to alkyl guaiacols was attributed to efficient in-situ hydrogen transfer from isopropanol/formic acid donors, and a synergy between surface acid sites in the Al-doped MCM-41 support and reducible Ni/Mo species, which improved the chemical stability and quality of the resulting lignin-derived bio-oils.
Catalytic Conversion of Lignin to Liquid Fuels with an Improved H/C eff Value over Bimetallic NiMo-MOF-Derived Catalysts

Abstract:Lignin is an abundant source of aromatics with low effective hydrogen-to-carbon ratio (H/Ceff), and the depolymerization of lignin provides significant potential for producing liquid products with an improved H/Ceff value. In this work, the catalytic conversion of lignin monomers, dimer, trimers, and realistic lignin over spherical MOF-derived catalysts was well established, to get liquid fuels with a higher H/Ceff. The optimal ratio of the catalyst exhibited good hydrodeoxygenation activity and stability for the hydrotreatment of lignin model compounds and lignin. The addition of Mo facilitated the decrease of the particle size of a spherical structure, strengthened the electron-transfer capability between metals Mo and Ni, and enhanced the acid strength. All of these factors contributed to higher hydrodeoxygenation activity in the hydrotreatment process. Up to 100% conversion and 90% yields of ethylcyclohexane and cyclohexanol with H/Ceff values of 2.0 and 1.667, respectively, were obtained. The catalyst achieved a decrease of the oxygen element and an increase of H/Ceff and HHV values. The physicochemical characterizations were performed by various means including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), pyridine-infrared spectroscopy (Py-IR), inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer (ICP), and Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, which definitely elucidated the formation of a synergistic effect between metals Mo and Ni. Additionally, a control experiment also illustrated the synergistic effect that facilitated the occurrence of the hydrotreatment process under lower temperatures after the addition of metal Mo. Abstract:Valorization of biomass and plastics is an urgent assignment to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Hydrodeoxygenation using bimetallic catalysts with distinct active sites is one of the most effective approaches to producing fuels and chemicals via C-O/C-C bonds hydrogenolysis and hydrogenation. Rational design of bimetallic catalysts has been progressed in recent studies owing to the understanding of synergy and strong mutual interaction between metal nanoparticles and metal oxide species. Thus, activity of bimetallic catalysts has been further improved, and the chemoselectivity for suppression of C-C bond dissociation and the regioselectivity among different C-O bonds, which have less been achieved before, are realized in the hydrodeoxygenation reactions. The catalytic performances, catalyst structures, and reaction mechanisms are directly compared and discussed in details based on the C-O bond cleavage using glycerol and 1,2-propanediol hydrogenolysis as model reactions over Ir-, Pt-, and Ru-based bimetallic catalysts. Finally, application of these bimetallic catalysts to conversion of lignocellulose-derived feedstocks, carbonyl compounds, and typical plastic of polycarbonates is introduced. Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant biopolymer with aromatic building blocks and its valorization to sustainable chemicals and fuels has extremely great potential to reduce the excessive dependence on fossil resources, although such conversions remain challenging. The purpose of this Review is to present an insight into the catalytic conversion of lignin involving hydrogen, including reductive depolymerization and the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived monomers to arenes, cycloalkanes and phenols, with a main focus on the catalyst systems and reaction mechanisms. The roles of hydrogenation sites (Ru, Pt, Pd, Rh) and acid sites (Nb, Ti, Mo), as well as their interaction in selective hydrodeoxygenation reactions are emphasized. Furthermore, some inspirational strategies for the production of other value-added chemicals are mentioned. Finally, some personal perspectives are provided to highlight the opportunities within this attractive field.

Abstract:Direct converting Kraft lignin into valuable chemicals by catalytic hydrogenolysis is a promising method to develop biomass valorization. In our research, the multifunctional porous carbon material catalyst was prepared for lignin depolymerization reaction. Through the introduction of ammonium oxalate as both foaming agent and nitrogen source increased the carbon materials surface area (608.74 m2/g), which improved the stability and dispersion of Ru and WOx nanoparticles. Based on the catalyst characterization and liquid product composition analysis, the lignin could quickly achieve hydrodeoxygenation process over the connected multi-stage pore structure assisted with Ru metal center and WOx oxophilic sites. Especially, the 96.89 wt% bio-oil yield, 36.85 wt% monomer yield and 20.85 wt% arenes yield were achieved over a porous 5Ru/30WOx/N-C catalyst. Under the optimal reaction condition, the higher heating values of bio-oil could increase to 35.68 MJ/kg. This research provided a new method for catalyst design towards highly efficient and selective hydrogenolysis of lignin to useful aromatic chemicals.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenolysis of lignin-derived compounds is a significant process to produce value-added chemicals and the design of the high active catalyst is challenging. Biochar was used as potential supports of heterogeneous catalysts due to its high porosity. Biochar prepared from different carbon sources had different effects on the dispersion and reduction of metallic Ni due to their different physical structure and elemental composition, resulting in the difference in catalytic performance. Herein, biochar obtained from biomass waste, cellulose powder, hemicellulose, and lignin were used as the support of catalysts. The effect of biochar with different carbon sources on the catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin model compounds over Ni/AC catalyst was investigated. Among these catalysts, Ni/ACP prepared from cellulose powder exhibited the best catalytic activity for converting lignin-derived compounds into value-added compounds under mild conditions (140 °C and 1 MPa H2). ACP with uniform pore structure could make Ni a better dispersion. The high purity sulfur-free ACP could therefore embrace more Ni0. These characteristics of Ni/ACP resulted in the optimal catalytic performance compared to other Ni/AC catalysts. Meanwhile, Ni/ACP was also used to explore the hydrogenolysis of other lignin model compounds to evaluate the applicability of the catalysts.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of renewable lignin to aromatics can effectively alleviate the fossil resource crisis. Herein, we prepared porous nitrogen-doped carbon-supported cobalt nanoparticle catalyst (CoNC) using a SiO2 template and tested its catalytic performance for cleavage of the β-O-4 ether bond in lignin model compounds. It was found that the catalyst pyrolyzed in a nitrogen atmosphere at 900 °C (CoNC-900) could catalyze 2-phenoxyacetophenone to ethylbenzene and phenol effectively, affording both in 99.0% yields. Further study indicated that the catalytic system was efficient for transformation of various β-O-4 ketones with methoxyl groups with high yields of desired products. The excellent catalytic performance was related to the cobalt nanoparticles, large pore volume, and specific surface area. Furthermore, the catalyst could be reused five times without obvious loss of the activity, indicating its stability during the reaction process. Abstract:Efficient hydrogenolysis of C-O bonds in lignin offers a promising pathway for producing high-value-added biofuels and chemicals. However, designing an easily synthesized, highly active catalyst for this process remains a challenge. In this paper, a series of Ni-M(Pd, Pt, Ru)/C catalysts were prepared and synergized with NaOH to produce aromatic compounds from β-O-4 model compound (MC). Among the catalyst systems, Ni-0.25 % Pd/C-NaOH completely converted β-O-4 MC at mild conditions (150 °C, 2 MPa H 2 , 3 h) to produce monomers with a yield of 95.6 wt% and excellent selectivity of the bond-breaking products as high as 85.5 %. Recycling tests showed that the Ni-0.25 % Pd/C catalyst remained stable after five cycles, with high activity and without the need for a further reduction before runs. Further, the catalytic system has proven to exhibit high activity for the cleavage of other types of lignin MC, such as 4-O-5, α-O-4, β-O-4 and ether bond (diphenyl ether, benzyl phenyl ether, Guaiacolylglycerol-β-guaiacol ether, benzyl ether) and also effective for lignin from enzymatic cleavage (LEC). Hydrogenolysis of LEC achieved a monomer yield of 34.5 wt%; the molecular weight (555 g/mol) of the hydrogenolysis oligomer was significantly reduced compared to LEC (2872 g/mol). The highly active and stable Ni-0.25 % Pd/C-NaOH catalytic system provides a promising pathway for the efficient hydrogenolysis of lignin and lignin model compounds to produce high-value biofuels and chemicals.

Abstract:Chemical reductions of lignin are useful to remove oxygen and create product slates that can function as renewable platform molecules for new fuels and chemicals. Catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis (CTH) is an underexplored method to reduce lignin that obviates the use of dangerous and nonrenewable hydrogen gas. While noble metals are used extensively as catalysts for transfer hydrogenation, sustainability remains a major challenge to their deployment. In this work, we synthesized mixed-metal oxides of earth-abundant Co and Ni and characterized the catalysts using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Catalyst reactivity for the CTH of acetophenone was also assessed. Among the catalysts tested, spinel NiCo2O4 demonstrated the highest conversion of acetophenone (75%) and the highest selectivity for ethylbenzene (90%); thus, we applied it to valorize switchgrass lignin, extracted under mild operating conditions by cosolvent enhanced lignocellulosic fractionation (CELF). The catalytically depolymerized lignin showed an increase in the number of selectively deoxygenated monomeric compounds. As demonstrated using 2D-NMR spectroscopy, the lignin displayed highly reduced aliphatic carbons, resulting from the catalyst-mediated reduction reaction at the Cα sites. These results are critical to the further development of the lignin-first biorefinery as they demonstrate the use of sustainable catalyst materials and mild transformation conditions to generate and refine a suite of new bioproducts.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenolysis of CO bonds in lignin provides a promising route to produce high value-added biofuels and chemicals. However, designing highly active and stable catalysts for this process is still a challenge. Herein, a series of Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were synthesized by calcination and reduction of layered double hydroxide precursors, and their activities were evaluated in the catalytic conversion of lignin-derived compounds. Diphenyl ether was completely converted with a 100% monomeric selectivity (cyclohexane and cyclohexanol) over the optimized Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 under the optimal conditions of 200 °C, 0.5 MPa H 2 and 1.5 h, indicating the excellent catalytic activity in the cleavage of CO bonds of the catalyst. The excellent catalytic performances of Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 were originated from its relatively large specific surface area, well-developed porosity, small crystallite size, high Ni 0 concentration and strong interaction between the active metal and support. The reusability experiments show that Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 possesses a relatively high stability for six reuses. Moreover, various lignin model compounds can be completely converted to corresponding monomeric products over Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500, indicating the applicability of this ingenious catalyst. The application of the hydrotalcite-derived Ni-based catalysts with high activity and stability provides a promising approach for the efficient hydrogenolysis of lignin derivatives.

Abstract:Low temperature and highly selective hydrogenation of the lignin-derived aromatics to obtain high-value chemicals and clean liquid fuels is a significant step for lignin valorization in the chemical industry. Developing efficient catalysts with high activity and selectivity for hydrogenation of lignin-derived aromatic rings at low temperature remains a big challenge. Herein, a well-dispersed Ru-Fe bimetallic nanoparticle catalyst supported on porous nitrogen-doped carbon was developed through a facile impregnation method. It showed excellent catalytic activity for hydrogenation of lignin-derived aromatics, such as diaryl ethers, phenolic monomers and arenes to corresponding alicyclic compounds with high selectivity, under surprisingly mild conditions (≤50 °C, ≤2 h and 1 MPa H2). Hydrogenation of aromatic rings took precedence over the cleavage of C-O bond for the lignin-derived aromatics. The resulting alicyclic compounds are key raw materials for synthesizing polymer, pharmaceutical intermediates and resins, and clean liquid fuels. The strong interactions between metal and support improved the anti-oxidation and anti-sintering ability of the catalyst, and significantly improve the hydrogenation performance. Additionally, the phenols in the lignin oil were effectively converted into cyclohexanol and its derivatives at 90 °C over the Ru-Fe bimetallic catalyst, with selectivity up to 53.3% in the hydrogenated lignin oil. The development of this catalyst for selective hydrogenation of lignin-derived aromatics at low temperature provides a green, low carbon footprint and sustainable approach for the value-added utilization of lignin and its derivatives.

Abstract:The development of novel catalysts to regulate product selectivity and the insight into the mechanism of lignin hydrogenolysis are important for the comprehensive utilization of lignocellulose. Herein, we present a non-precious bimetallic catalyst Ni5Fe5/Al2O3 with improved catalytic performance relative to commercial Pd/C and Ni10/Al2O3 for hydrogenolysis of woody sawdust. In particular, the selectivity of propylguaiacol and propylsyringol is 79.1%. We developed kinetic experimental studies on β-O-4 model compounds and directly monitored the coniferyl alcohol or sinapyl alcohol intermediates in the reaction system for the first time. This directly demonstrates the lignin hydrolysis reaction pathway with simultaneous breakage of Cα-OH and Cβ-O. In the catalytic system, the reason for the difference in selectivity between Ni5Fe5/Al2O3 and other catalysts is their different hydrogenation pathways for intermediates coniferyl alcohol or sinapyl alcohol. Our work provides both an efficient catalyst and insight into understanding and regulating the mechanism of lignin hydrogenolysis.

Abstract:The utilization of lignin to produce high value-added chemicals is conducive to alleviating the fossil energy crisis. Herein, Ni nanoparticles supported on iron/nitrogen co-doped carbon was prepared by co-pyrolysis and solvothermal reduction method for catalytic hydrogenolysis (CH) of dealkaline lignin and its model compounds. The catalysts were prepared under different calcination temperature, N/C ratio and Ni loading, and the optimal catalyst was Ni10%@Fe/NC0.33–800 (calcination temperature: 800 °C, N/C ratio: 0.33, Ni loading: 10%) based the on the CH of benzyl phenyl ether (BPE). Ni10%@Fe/NC0.33–800 showed good catalytic performance on the selective cleavage of C-O bond of lignin and its model compounds. The BPE conversion reached up to 97.7% over Ni10%@Fe/NC0.33–800 under mild conditions (230 °C, 1 MPa H2, and 0.5 h) with toluene and cyclohexanol as major products. Catalyst characterizations suggest that N content affects the formation of NiFe alloy and the synergistic effect between Ni and Fe plays an important role in CH of BPE. Abstract:The exploration on effective pathways for catalytic conversion of lignin (which is the most abundant and renewable natural bio-aromatic resource) into high-value chemicals (e.g., aromatic hydrocarbons and phenols) has attracted wide interests both in industrial and in scientific fields. By unleashing the potential of lignin to replace the utilization of fossil-derived resource for producing high-value chemicals, it can extremely improve lignin valorization and relieve the energy shortage caused by excessive consumption of traditional fossil-derived resource. However, achieving efficient lignin conversion has still been a challenge due to its structural complexity and stability. Ni-based catalysts consisting of active metal Ni and various functional supports have been broadly researched due to their inherent superiority in cost and outstanding performance in catalytic activity. Therefore, this review is dedicated to summarizing the recent progress of catalytic conversion of lignin (or lignin-derived model compounds) over Ni-based catalysts, including monometallic and bimetallic supported catalysts.
