Abstract:Low temperature and highly selective hydrogenation of the lignin-derived aromatics to obtain high-value chemicals and clean liquid fuels is a significant step for lignin valorization in the chemical industry. Developing efficient catalysts with high activity and selectivity for hydrogenation of lignin-derived aromatic rings at low temperature remains a big challenge. Herein, a well-dispersed Ru-Fe bimetallic nanoparticle catalyst supported on porous nitrogen-doped carbon was developed through a facile impregnation method. It showed excellent catalytic activity for hydrogenation of lignin-derived aromatics, such as diaryl ethers, phenolic monomers and arenes to corresponding alicyclic compounds with high selectivity, under surprisingly mild conditions (≤50 °C, ≤2 h and 1 MPa H2). Hydrogenation of aromatic rings took precedence over the cleavage of C-O bond for the lignin-derived aromatics. The resulting alicyclic compounds are key raw materials for synthesizing polymer, pharmaceutical intermediates and resins, and clean liquid fuels. The strong interactions between metal and support improved the anti-oxidation and anti-sintering ability of the catalyst, and significantly improve the hydrogenation performance. Additionally, the phenols in the lignin oil were effectively converted into cyclohexanol and its derivatives at 90 °C over the Ru-Fe bimetallic catalyst, with selectivity up to 53.3% in the hydrogenated lignin oil. The development of this catalyst for selective hydrogenation of lignin-derived aromatics at low temperature provides a green, low carbon footprint and sustainable approach for the value-added utilization of lignin and its derivatives.

Abstract:Efficient catalytic cleavage of C–O bonds in lignin derivatives is crucial for converting these compounds into valuable chemicals. The reliance on expensive noble metals and harsh operational conditions poses significant challenges for existing catalyst systems. In response, we have developed a Ni-based catalyst through an acetone-driven etching-deposition-pyrolysis technique, tailored to maximize exposure of Ni active sites. Systematic optimization of the support's surface properties, pyrolysis temperature, and Ni loading were instrumental in augmenting C–O bond cleavage efficiency in aromatic ethers. Remarkably, the catalyst, 2Ni/CNS-500, facilitated the cleavage of the C–O bond in diphenyl ether (DPE) to monomers under mild conditions (140 °C for 2 h under 1 MPa H 2 pressure), surpassing the performance of several existing heterogeneous Ni-based catalysts. The catalyst's superior performance is attributed to the robust interaction between nickel and carbon nanosphere (CNS) species and the significant exposure of nickel active sites. Versatility was demonstrated with a variety of lignin-derived substrates, including 4-phenoxy phenol (4-O-5), benzyl phenyl ether (α-O-4), phenyl ethyl benzene (β-O-4), and anisole, showcasing the catalyst's broad applicability. Therefore, the acetone-driven etching-deposition-pyrolysis strategy is considered a promising method for preparing highly dispersed nickel-based hydrogenolysis of lignin derivatives catalysts with broad industrial application prospects.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of renewable lignin to aromatics can effectively alleviate the fossil resource crisis. Herein, we prepared porous nitrogen-doped carbon-supported cobalt nanoparticle catalyst (CoNC) using a SiO2 template and tested its catalytic performance for cleavage of the β-O-4 ether bond in lignin model compounds. It was found that the catalyst pyrolyzed in a nitrogen atmosphere at 900 °C (CoNC-900) could catalyze 2-phenoxyacetophenone to ethylbenzene and phenol effectively, affording both in 99.0% yields. Further study indicated that the catalytic system was efficient for transformation of various β-O-4 ketones with methoxyl groups with high yields of desired products. The excellent catalytic performance was related to the cobalt nanoparticles, large pore volume, and specific surface area. Furthermore, the catalyst could be reused five times without obvious loss of the activity, indicating its stability during the reaction process. Abstract:Selective hydrogenolysis of 4-O-5 bond in lignin under relatively mild conditions is an important strategy for the production of valuable aromatic products, e.g. phenols, from renewable carbon resources. However, the easy saturation of benzene rings under reductive conditions over metal catalyst reduces the selectivity to aromatics. In this work, we investigated the effect of bromination of supported Ni nanoparticles on the phenol selectivity during the hydrogenolysis of diphenyl ether (DPE), a commonly used lignin model compound. Compared with the unmodified catalysts, Br-Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst derived from Ni-Al layered double oxides exhibits enhanced phenol selectivity (37% vs. 15%) under similar DPE conversions (60%). Various characterizations including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and CO-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicate that Br preferentially located at the terrace site of Ni nanoparticles, deactivating the continuous Ni sites for benzene ring hydrogenation. In addition, the electron-withdrawing effect of Br creates positively charged Ni sites at the corners, facilitating the hydrogenolysis of C–O aryl ether bonds. During the hydrogenation of real lignin, the selective poisoning and electronic effects introduced by Br synergistically increased the yield of phenols from 12.20% on the initial Ni/Al 2 O 3 to 30.47% over the Br-Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. This work provides an advanced strategy for the catalytic valorization of lignin by halogen modified metal-based catalysts.

Abstract:The utilization of lignin to produce high value-added chemicals is conducive to alleviating the fossil energy crisis. Herein, Ni nanoparticles supported on iron/nitrogen co-doped carbon was prepared by co-pyrolysis and solvothermal reduction method for catalytic hydrogenolysis (CH) of dealkaline lignin and its model compounds. The catalysts were prepared under different calcination temperature, N/C ratio and Ni loading, and the optimal catalyst was Ni10%@Fe/NC0.33–800 (calcination temperature: 800 °C, N/C ratio: 0.33, Ni loading: 10%) based the on the CH of benzyl phenyl ether (BPE). Ni10%@Fe/NC0.33–800 showed good catalytic performance on the selective cleavage of C-O bond of lignin and its model compounds. The BPE conversion reached up to 97.7% over Ni10%@Fe/NC0.33–800 under mild conditions (230 °C, 1 MPa H2, and 0.5 h) with toluene and cyclohexanol as major products. Catalyst characterizations suggest that N content affects the formation of NiFe alloy and the synergistic effect between Ni and Fe plays an important role in CH of BPE. Moreover, Ni10%@Fe/NC0.33–800 could promote the cleavage of C-O bonds in dealkaline lignin through CH and hence enhance producing aromatics such as phenols, aromatic ethers, and aromatic esters, among which phenols are the main aromatics with guaiacols predominant.

Abstract:The exploitation of bimetallic catalysts to lignin for sustainable aviation biofuels remains a daunting challenge due to the low selectivity of aviation biofuel-range hydrocarbons and inconsistent reaction mechanism. Herein, bimetallic supported on SiO2 catalysts were prepared and their hydrodeoxygenation reactivity during lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis was explored. Approximately 100% selectivity toward aviation-range hydrocarbons were achieved using eugenol as model compound under relatively mild conditions with the presence of NiMo/SiO2. For lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis, the yield of liquid hydrocarbons and the selectivity of aviation-range hydrocarbons was 21.99wt% and 70.50%, respectively. High mass balance (89.66%) was verified by scale-up experiments in a continuous flow high-pressure reactor system. The reactivity of demethoxylation reaction, dehydroxylation reaction, and benzene ring hydrogenation reaction with the presence of bimetallic catalysts were analyzed. The density functional theory calculation and verification experiments revealed the evolution pathway of aromatic hydrocarbons and cycloalkanes from lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis. The proposed reaction mechanism can provide guidance for the regulation of aviation biofuel components from lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis.

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant renewable aromatic resource in nature; thus, the development of an efficient and economical catalysts that can depolymerize lignin into value-added aromatic monomers is highly desirable. Here, we report a single-atom Ni catalyst (xNi/CeO2-S, where x represents the Ni loading), in which the single-atom Ni sites are anchored to the oxygen vacancies on CeO2 nanospheres, for the conversion of cellulolytic enzyme lignin (CEL) via depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation. The 1.0Ni/CeO2-S catalyst performed the best, achieving a lignin oil (LO) and maximum monomer yield of 84.3 wt% and 32.6 wt%, respectively; a higher heat value of 31.64 MJ/Kg is achieved for LO compared to 23.03 MJ/Kg for CEL. Thus, single-atom nickel catalyst exhibited excellent activity and stability in promoting the depolymerization of lignin. These results validate the viability of single-atom metal catalysts for the conversion of lignin resources.

Abstract:Chemical reductions of lignin are useful to remove oxygen and create product slates that can function as renewable platform molecules for new fuels and chemicals. Catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis (CTH) is an underexplored method to conduct reductions of lignin that obviates the use of dangerous and non-renewable hydrogen gas. While noble metals are used extensively as catalysts for transfer hydrogenation, one major challenge for their deployment is related to their sustainability. In this work, we synthesized mixed-metal oxides of earth-abundant Co and Ni. We characterized these catalysts using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and tested their reactivity for CTH of acetophenone. Among the catalysts we tested, we noted that the spinel NiCo2O4 demonstrated the highest conversion of acetophenone (75%) and highest selectivity for ethylbenzene (90%), so we applied it to valorization of switchgrass lignin extracted under mild operating conditions by cosolvent enhanced lignocellulosic fractionation (CELF). The catalytically depolymerized lignin showed an increase in selectively deoxygenated monomeric compounds. Using 2D-NMR spectroscopy, we demonstrated the lignin displayed highly reduced aliphatic carbons resulting from the reduction reaction at the Cα sites mediated by our catalyst material. These results are critical to the further development of the lignin-first biorefinery as they demonstrate the use of sustainable catalyst materials and mild transformation conditions to generate and refine a suite of new bioproducts.

Abstract:The conversion of lignin into value-added chemicals is one of the important ways for sustainable development. Herein, phytic acid, a biomass-derived chemical, was used as the phosphorus source and pore former to synthesize the AlPyOx support. After loading Ni, the Ni/AlPyOx catalysts were found to be highly active in the catalytic conversion of lignin model compounds to high-value-added chemicals under mild conditions. The benzyl phenyl ether (alpha-O-4 lignin model compound) could be completely converted into toluene and phenol with near-equivalent selectivity at 30 degrees C and 3 MPa H-2. Diphenyl ether and 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol were also used as 4-O-5 and beta-O-4 model compounds of lignin, respectively. The unique activity of Ni/AlP0.5Ox could be attributed to metallic Ni that interacts with AlP0.5Ox and the unique adsorption of substrates on the carrier. Lignin can also be degraded over Ni/AlP0.5Ox via selective cleavage of the C-O bond, and 26.60 wt % yield of identified monomers was obtained.

Abstract:Lignin is the only large-volume renewable source of aromatic chemicals. Efficient depolymerization and deoxygenation of lignin while retaining the aromatic functionality are attractive but extremely challenging. Here we report the selective production of arenes via direct hydrodeoxygenation of organosolv lignin over a porous Ru/Nb 2 O 5 catalyst that enabled the complete removal of the oxygen content from lignin. The conversion of birch lignin to monomer C 7 –C 9 hydrocarbons is nearly quantitative based on its monomer content, with a total mass yield of 35.5 wt% and an exceptional arene selectivity of 71 wt%. Inelastic neutron scattering and DFT calculations confirm that the Nb 2 O 5 support is catalytically unique compared with other traditional oxide supports, and the disassociation energy of C aromatic –OH bonds in phenolics is significantly reduced upon adsorption on Nb 2 O 5 , resulting in its distinct selectivity to arenes. This one-pot process provides a promising approach for improved lignin valorization with general applicability.

Abstract:The development of novel catalysts to regulate product selectivity and the insight into the mechanism of lignin hydrogenolysis are important for the comprehensive utilization of lignocellulose. Herein, we present a non-precious bimetallic catalyst Ni5Fe5/Al2O3 with improved catalytic performance relative to commercial Pd/C and Ni10/Al2O3 for hydrogenolysis of woody sawdust. In particular, the selectivity of propylguaiacol and propylsyringol is 79.1%. We developed kinetic experimental studies on β-O-4 model compounds and directly monitored the coniferyl alcohol or sinapyl alcohol intermediates in the reaction system for the first time. This directly demonstrates the lignin hydrolysis reaction pathway with simultaneous breakage of Cα-OH and Cβ-O. In the catalytic system, the reason for the difference in selectivity between Ni5Fe5/Al2O3 and other catalysts is their different hydrogenation pathways for intermediates coniferyl alcohol or sinapyl alcohol. Our work provides both an efficient catalyst and insight into understanding and regulating the mechanism of lignin hydrogenolysis.

Abstract:There is an urgent need to develop a selective hydrogenolysis of Caryl‐O bonds in lignin to produce valued‐added chemicals and fuels. Recently, hydrogen has been used in the hydrogenation reaction, which hides inevitable danger and is not economical. Therefore, isopropanol, as a hydrogen‐donor solvent, is employed for aryl ether hydrogenolysis in lignin models over nickel supported on a carbon nanotube (CNT). Except for aromatic ether (4‐O‐5), the Ni/CNT catalyst is also found to be suitable for alkyl‐aryl ether (α‐O‐4 and β‐O‐4) cleavage in control experiments. The physicochemical characterizations were carried out by means of H2‐temperature‐programmed reduction, X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. The catalyst can be magnetically recovered and efficiently reused for five consecutive recycling tests in the transfer hydrogenation of aromatic ethers. A mechanism study indicated that the hydrogenolysis cleavage of the ether bond is the first step in the reaction process, and hydrogenation of aromatic rings is only a successive step in which phenol and benzene are intermediate states and are then further hydrogenated. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that aryl groups play an important role in the hydrogenation of phenol in the competitive catalytic hydrogenation reaction of phenol.

Abstract:A novel composite catalyst consisting of nickel, cerium, and carbon nanotube (CNT) was developed for native lignin and industrial lignin depolymerization. It was found that Ni and Ce had synergistic effects on the depolymerization. Native lignin was depolymerized to monophenols with a yield of 21.4% at 300 degrees C for 2 h under 2 MPa hydrogen pressure with serious coke formation. A milder condition set at 280 degrees C for 2 h under 2 MPa hydrogen pressure provided a monophenols yield of 13.5% with 78.6% lignin removal, but much less coke formation and better catalyst reusability. Even after running the trial four times, the catalyst presented high efficiency. Industrial lignin was depolymerized to oligomers, which are a series of aromatic micromolecules that could be extracted by specific organic solvents such as ethyl acetate. Those oligomers could be used as high calorific value bio-oil. After being depolymerized at 260 degrees C for 1 h under 2 MPa hydrogen pressure, the yields of oligomers were 56.0% and 11.6% extracted by ethyl acetate (EA) and petroleum ether (PE), respectively. After recycling four times, the catalyst still exhibited high activity. It was clear that the Ni/Ce-CNT was an effective catalyst in lignin depolymerization.

Abstract:Lignin has recently attracted much attention as a promising resource to produce fuels and aromatic chemicals. The selective cleavage of C-O bond while preserving the aromatic nature has become one of the major challenges in the catalytic valorization of lignin to aromatic chemicals. In this work, we report that the selective reductive cleavage of C-O bond in lignin model compounds can be successfully achieved through heterogeneous iron catalysis. The hydrogenolysis of alpha-O-4 model linkage shows that the iron catalyst prepared by the simultaneous pyrolysis of iron acetate and 1,10-phenanthroline on activated carbon at 800 degrees C is the most active iron catalyst, affording phenol and toluene with yields of 95% and 90%, respectively. This aromatics selectivity is found to be much higher than that obtained over noble metal catalysts. The presence of N center dot center dot center dot Fe species as the active center of heterogeneous iron catalyst was confirmed by various technologies especially XPS and H-2-TPR. For the beta-O-4 model linkage, the vicinal -OH group was essential for the iron-catalyzed hydrogenolysis of ether linkage. The oxidation of the alpha-carbon in the beta-O-4 model compounds can significantly decrease the bond dissociation energy of ether linkage, giving depolymerization products in moderate to excellent yields.

The resulting monomers and dimers obtained by selective CO hydrogenolysis were then hydrogenated in near-critical water employing Pd/C as the catalyst.

Abstract:Hydrogenolysis via targeted depolymerization of C–O linkages is a techno-economic beneficial process for converting lignin into highly valuable chemicals and clean fuels. In this work, a macroporous silicalite-1 (S-1) array-supported Ru-Ni metallic phosphide composite (Ru-Ni12P5/S-15) was prepared as a catalyst and hydrogenolysis activity under relative mild conditions was investigated using a series of compounds containing ether linkages as lignin-related model compounds. The Lewis acid sites originating from the unreduced Ru species and the macroporous geometry of S-1 significantly influenced hydrogenolysis activity and product selectivity. Analysis of the mechanism demonstrated that both the aryl ether and aliphatic ether linkages were directly hydrogenated over Ru-Ni12P5/S-15. 2D-HSQC-NMR spectroscopy demonstrated that the ether linkages of lignin were efficiently cleaved by Ru-Ni12P5/S-15. Furthermore, the obtained liquid hydrogenolysis products are high value-added chemicals used for pharmaceutical production and can be facilely tuned via the reaction conditions.
