Abstract:We developed a facile strategy to obtain a new kind of mesoporous core-shell structured up-conversion nanoparticles (mUCNPs), composed of a NaYbF4:2%Er core and a mesoporous NaGdF4 shell. This mesoporous shell not only enhanced the up-conversion luminescence but also endowed many other functionalities of the nanoparticles such as drug delivery and bio-imaging capabilities. Moreover, after being conjugated with polyethylenimine (PEI) and folic acid (FA), core-shell mUCNPs exhibited good water dispersibility, enhanced drug delivery efficiency, and remarkable targeting ability to cancer cells. To certify the folate receptors (FR)-mediated targeted drug delivery, cell viability assay, cell up-conversion luminescence imaging and flow cytometry analysis were carried out. Furthermore, apart from the application for targeted drug delivery, the as-prepared core-shell mUCNPs could also be employed as the contrast agents for X-ray computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, because of the strong X-ray attenuation ability of Yb and high longitudinal molar relaxivity (r1) of Gd in the nanoparticles, providing the potential for simultaneously bio-imaging and cancer-targeting therapy.
Mechanistic Investigation of Photon Upconversion in Nd3+-Sensitized Core-Shell Nanoparticles

Abstract:A new type of core-shell upconversion nanoparticles which can be effectively excited at 795 nm has been designed and synthesized through spatially confined doping of neodymium (Nd(3+)) ions. The use of Nd(3+) ions as sensitizers facilitates the energy transfer and photon upconversion of a series of lanthanide activators (Er(3+), Tm(3+), and Ho(3+)) at a biocompatible excitation wavelength (795 nm) and also significantly minimizes the overheating problem associated with conventional 980 nm excitation. Importantly, the core-shell design enabled high-concentration doping of Nd(3+) (~0 mol %) in the shell layer and thus markedly enhanced the upconversion emission from the activators, providing highly attractive luminescent biomarkers for bioimaging without autofluorescence and concern of overheating.
Enhancing Upconversion from NaYF₄:Yb,Er@NaYF₄ Core-Shell Nanoparticles Assembled on Metallic Nanostructures

Abstract:We report a simple method for the fabrication of a three-layered plasmonic structure of silicon substrate-Au nanospheres-upconversion particles (UCNPs) that displays up to 101-fold fluorescence enhancement. Monodispersed pure hexagonal-phase NaYF4:Yb,Er core and NaYF4:Yb,Er@NaYF4 core@shell nanocrystals were prepared by a solvothermal method. Two dimensional (2D) assembled Au spheres were prepared on a Si substrate, and then, 2D arrays of UCNPs were deposited on the grown 2D monolayered Au spheres by a self-organizing process. The distance between plasmonic Au NPs and rare-earth (RE) core was finely adjusted by changing the undoped NaYF4 shell thickness. The UC emission enhancement shows a pronounced shell thickness dependence. For the non-plasmonic structured samples, a single peak in upconversion luminescence (UCL) enhancement was observed as the undoped NaYF4 shell thickness increases from 0 nm to 23.0 nm. In contrast, for the plasmonic structured samples, multi-oscillations in UCL enhancement were observed in the undoped NaYF4 shell thickness range of 0-23.0 nm, where the UCL enhancement factors of three bands (521 nm, 540 nm and 654 nm) are high up to 65, 101 and 61, respectively, at 19.6 nm-thick NaYF4 shell. The multi-oscillations in UCL enhancement in the plasmonic samples can be associated with plasmonic coupling between arrays of core-shell UCNPs with various sizes and the underlying 2D Au spheres. The related mechanisms of the UCL enhancements are discussed.

Abstract:NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals with different concentrations of Gd3+ ions are prepared via a hydrothermal method. With increasing Gd3+ dopant, up-conversion (UC) emission is gradually enhanced and the strongest UC emission is improved by 50-fold for a sample with 15% Gd3+ doping compared with the one without Gd3+ incorporation. However, further increasing the Gd3+ dopant causes the reduction of UC emission which can be ascribed to the increased surface state recombination. Moreover, the self-assembly technique is used to fabricate Au nanosphere arrays with diameters of 300 nm to enhance the UC luminescence. It is found that the luminescence intensity is increased by 2-fold due to the surface plasmon resonance effect which is confirmed by the absorption spectra.

Abstract:A core-shell structure of novel complex conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) consisting of poly(2-methoxy, 5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)- 1,4-phenylenevinylene), polyethyleneimine (PEI) is developed. PEI is used to construct CPN@PEI core-shell structure through electrostatic attraction, and shell thickness can be controlled by PEI. Small Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles (ANPs) are then inserted into CPN@PEI core-shell structure to plasmonically tune luminescence properties. The coupling structure with double polymer core-shell CPN@PEI and ANPs presents unique luminescent characters, and maximum luminescence enhancement is realized when shell thickness is 8.6 nm. The strategies taking polymer as shell material in construction of core-shell complex CPNs and tuning optical properties by ANPs shall have significant values in applications of CPNs as probes and fluorescent tags in biological science. Multi-wavelength pumped upconversion enhancement induced by Cu2-xS plasmonic nanoparticles in NaYF4@Cu2-xS core-shell structure

Abstract:Cu2-xS nanoparticles (NPs) demonstrate unique tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and nonlinear optical properties, which are promising materials for photoelectric and display devices. In this work, we present highly improved upconversion luminescence (UCL) in the NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+@NaYF4:Yb3+, Nd3+@Cu2-xS core-shell structure. The UCL enhancement is systemically studied under excitation of multi-wavelengths 808, 980, and 1540 nm, due to the broadband nature of Cu2-xS LSPR. Two different mechanisms synergistically contribute to the UCL enhancement, namely, the LSPR effect and two-photon effect, which lead to the extraordinary power dependence of UCL. UCL enhancement as high as 12-fold is achieved in the core-shell upconversion NPs (UCNPs). The core-shell NPs are printed on a paper substrate using a nano-printing technique, displaying different colors irradiated by different near-infrared light, and have potential applications in anti-counterfeiting, encryption, and display fields. These findings provide a method to design and optimize luminescent materials and demonstrate potential applications of plasmonic semiconductors and UCNPs.
Direct imaging the upconversion nanocrystal core/shell structure at the subnanometer level: shell thickness dependence in upconverting optical properties

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles have shown considerable promise in solid-state lasers, three-dimensional flat-panel displays, and solar cells and especially biological labeling and imaging. It has been demonstrated extensively that the epitaxial coating of upconversion (UC) core crystals with a lattice-matched shell can passivate the core and enhance the overall upconversion emission intensity of the materials. However, there are few papers that report a precise link between the shell thickness of core/shell nanoparticles and their optical properties. This is mainly because rare earth fluoride upconversion core/shell structures have only been inferred from indirect measurements to date. Herein, a reproducible method to grow a hexagonal NaGdF(4) shell on NaYF(4):Yb,Er nanocrystals with monolayer control thickness is demonstrated for the first time. On the basis of the cryo-transmission electron microscopy, rigorous electron energy loss spectroscopy, and high-angle annular dark-field investigations on the core/shell structure under a low operation temperature (96 K), direct imaging the NaYF(4):Yb,Er@NaGdF(4) nanocrystal core/shell structure at the subnanometer level was realized for the first time. Furthermore, a strong linear link between the NaGdF(4) shell thickness and the optical response of the hexagonal NaYF(4):Yb,Er@NaGdF(4) core/shell nanocrystals has been established. During the epitaxial growth of the NaGdF(4) shell layer by layer, surface defects of the nanocrystals can be gradually passivated by the homogeneous shell deposition process, which results in the obvious enhancement in overall UC emission intensity and lifetime and is more resistant to quenching by water molecules.
Improving Upconversion Luminescence by Coating Active Shell: A Case Study on NaYF₄:Gd, Yb, Er@NaYF₄:Yb, Pr

Abstract:Upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) have a lot of advantages over other fluorescent materials. However, their applications are still limited due to the relatively low upconversion luminescence (UCL). In the present study, a novel core/shell structural upconversion nanocrystal NaYF₄:Gd, Yb, Er@NaYF₄:Yb, Pr was prepared successfully with a facilely solvothermal method and the properties of the nanocrystal were investigated. It was interesting to find that the as-prepared nano-crystal showed excellent UCL. Its UCL intensity was 65, 44, and 20 times higher than those of core nanocrystal NaYF₄:Gd, Yb, Er, core/inert-shell nanocrystal NaYF₄:Gd, Yb, Er@NaYF₄, and core/active-shell nanocrystal NaYF₄:Gd, Yb, Er@NaYF₄:Yb, respectively. Moreover, the measured UCL lifetime of the as-prepared nanocrystal was longer than those of the controls. The mechanism of the UCL enhancement of the product was discussed in detail. The high UCL of the as-prepared product could be ascribed to the function of the shell, energy transfer from the active shell to the core, and Pr³⁺-doping in the shell. This study provided a new insight into the fabrication of core– shell structural upconversion nanocrystals with high UCL. The high UCL potentially increases the overall upconversion nanocrystal detectability for highly sensitive biological, medical, and optical detections.
Filtration Shell Mediated Power Density Independent Orthogonal Excitations–Emissions Upconversion Luminescence

Abstract:AbstractLanthanide doped core–multishell structured NaGdF4:Yb,Er@NaYF4:Yb@NaGdF4:Yb,Nd@NaYF4@NaGdF4:Yb,Tm@NaYF4 nanoparticles with power‐density independent orthogonal excitations‐emissions upconversion luminescence (UCL) were fabricated for the first time. The optical properties of these core–multishell structured nanoparticles were related to the absorption filtration effect of the NaGdF4:Yb,Tm layer. By tuning the thickness of the filtration layer, the nanoparticles can exhibit unique two independent groups of UCL: Tm3+ prominent UV/blue (UV=ultraviolet) UCL under the excitation at 980 nm and Er3+ prominent green/red UCL under the excitation at 796 nm. The filtration‐shell mediated orthogonal excitations‐emissions UCL are power‐density independent. As a proof of concept, the core–multishell nanoparticles are used in multi‐dimensional security design and imaging‐guided combined photodynamic therapy and chemotherapy.

Abstract:Hexagonal phase (β) sodium rare earth tetrafluorides (NaREF4, RE = Y, Gd, Lu, et al.) are considered the ideal matrices for lanthanide (Ln) ions doped upconversion (UC) luminescence materials, because they can provide favorable crystal lattice structures for the doped luminescent Ln ions to make intensive emissions. However, the cubic phase (α) NaREF4 always preferentially forms at low reaction temperature in short time as it is dynamically stable. Therefore, it is hard to obtain small sized β-NaREF4 via the traditional solvothermal method. In this paper, small sized β-NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles were synthesized by a heterogeneous-core-induced method via the solvothermal reaction. The heterogeneous α-NaGdF4/β-NaYF4: Yb, Er core-shell structure was confirmed by the local elemental mapping. The formation mechanism of β-NaYF4:Yb,Er shell on the surface of α-NaGdF4 core was explained in detail. We reasoned that a hetero interface with a lower lattice symmetric structure was produced by cation exchanges between the core and shell, which caused the preferential growth of anisotropic hexagonal phase shell. The existence of this hetero interface has also been proven by observation of Gd3+ UC emission.
Construction of active-inert core–shell structured nanocrystals for broad range multicolor upconversion luminescence

Abstract:Rare earth doped up-conversion luminescent nano-materials exhibit abundant emission colors under suitable excitation condition. In this work, NaYF 4 :Er/Ho@NaYF 4 and NaYbF 4 :Tm@NaYF 4 nanoparticles were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The pure red emission can be realized by the designed NaYF 4 :Er/Ho@NaYF 4 nanocrystals and the R/Gs reach 23.3 and 25 under excitations of 980 and 1550 nm lasers, respectively. The R/G declines as the power increasing with the emission color changing from red to yellow, which is due to the quick saturation of the energy levels, radiating red emissions. Meanwhile, the emission intensity of NaYbF 4 :Tm@NaYF 4 nanocrystals increases by 58.3 folds after encasing the inert shell NaYF 4 and the CIE color coordinate reaches (0.1646, 0.0602) under 980 nm laser excitation. Furthermore, broad range multicolor from blue to red and yellow up-conversion emissions is achieved by mixing NaYF 4 :Er/Ho@NaYF 4 and NaYbF 4 :Tm@NaYF 4 nanocrystals, which could be applied to colorful displaying, security anti-counterfeiting and information coding.

Abstract:Plasmon-enhanced upconversion luminescence of NaYF4: Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped nanocrystals is investigated using a 3D plasmonic antenna architecture: a disk-coupled dots-on-pillar antenna array (D2PA). By tuning and optimizing the resonance frequency of the D2PA structure for upconversion luminescence, a 310-fold luminescence enhancement and an 8-fold reduction of the luminescence decay time are observed.

Abstract:Upconversion luminescent nanoparticles (UCNPs) have been widely used in many biochemical fields, due to their characteristic large anti-Stokes shifts, narrow emission bands, deep tissue penetration and minimal background interference. UCNPs-derived multifunctional materials that integrate the merits of UCNPs and other functional entities have also attracted extensive attention. Here in this paper we present a core-shell structured nanomaterial, namely, NaGdF(4):Yb,Er@CaF(2)@SiO(2)-PS, which is multifunctional in the fields of photodynamic therapy (PDT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorescence/luminescence imaging. The NaGdF(4):Yb,Er@CaF(2) nanophosphors (10 nm in diameter) were prepared via sequential thermolysis, and mesoporous silica was coated as shell layer, in which photosensitizer (PS, hematoporphyrin and silicon phthalocyanine dihydroxide) was covalently grafted. The silica shell improved the dispersibility of hydrophobic PS molecules in aqueous environments, and the covalent linkage stably anchored the PS molecules in the silica shell. Under excitation at 980 nm, the as-fabricated nanomaterial gave luminescence bands at 550 nm and 660 nm. One luminescent peak could be used for fluorescence imaging and the other was suitable for the absorption of PS to generate singlet oxygen for killing cancer cells. The PDT performance was investigated using a singlet oxygen indicator, and was investigated in vitro in HeLa cells using a fluorescent probe. Meanwhile, the nanomaterial displayed low dark cytotoxicity and near-infrared (NIR) image in HeLa cells. Further, benefiting from the paramagnetic Gd(3+) ions in the core, the nanomaterial could be used as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Compared with the clinical commercial contrast agent Gd-DTPA, the as-fabricated nanomaterial showed a comparable longitudinal relaxivities value (r(1)) and similar imaging effect.
Shaping Luminescent Properties of Yb3+ and Ho3+ Co-Doped Upconverting Core-Shell β-NaYF4 Nanoparticles by Dopant Distribution and Spacing

Abstract:At the core of luminescence color and lifetime tuning of rare earth doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs), is the understanding of the impact of the particle architecture for commonly used sensitizer (S) and activator (A) ions. In this respect, a series of core@shell NaYF4 UCNPs doped with Yb3+ and Ho3+ ions are presented here, where the same dopant concentrations are distributed in different particle architectures following the scheme: YbHo core and YbHo@…, …@YbHo, Yb@Ho, Ho@Yb, YbHo@Yb, and Yb@YbHo core-shell NPs. As revealed by quantitative steady-state and time-resolved luminescence studies, the relative spatial distribution of the A and S ions in the UCNPs and their protection from surface quenching has a critical impact on their luminescence characteristics. Although the increased amount of Yb3+ ions boosts UCNP performance by amplifying the absorption, the Yb3+ ions can also efficiently dissipate the energy stored in the material through energy migration to the surface, thereby reducing the overall energy transfer efficiency to the activator ions. The results provide yet another proof that UC phosphor chemistry combined with materials engineering through intentional core@shell structures may help to fine-tune the luminescence features of UCNPs for their specific future applications in biosensing, bioimaging, photovoltaics, and display technologies.
Plasmonically Enhanced Upconversion Luminescence via Holographically Formed Silver Nanogratings

Abstract:Greatly enhanced upconversion luminescence was demonstrated by integrating the core-shell upconversion nanorods with the Ag nanogratings. Both the Ag nanogratings and upconversion nanorods were fabricated/synthesized in a facile, cost-effective, high-throughput way. Experimental results showed that the upconversion luminescence intensity of Er3+ in the core-shell upconversion nanorods can be well tuned and enhanced by changing the shell thickness and the period of the Ag nanograting. The underlying physical mechanism for the upconversion luminescence enhancement was attributed to the plasmonically enhanced near infrared broadband absorption of the periodic Ag nanograting and the localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag nanocrystals. The maximum enhanced factors of 523 nm, 544 nm (green emission), and 658 nm (red emission) of Er3+ ions excited at 980 nm are 3.8-, 5.5-, and 4.6-folds, respectively. Our fabrication approach and results suggest that such a simple integration is potentially useful for biosensing/imaging and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:Engineering a facile and controllable approach to modulate the spectral properties of lanthanide‐doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) is always an ongoing challenge. Herein, long‐range ordered, distinct two‐dimensional (2D) binary nanoparticle superlattices (BNSLs) composed of NaREF4:Yb/Er (RE = Y and Gd) UCNPs and plasmonic metallic nanoparticles (Au NPs), including AB, AB3, and AB13 lattices, are fabricated via a slow evaporation‐driven self‐assembly to achieve plasmonic modulation of upconversion luminescence (UCL). Optical measurements reveal that typical red–green UCL from UCNPs can be effectively modulated into reddish output in BNSLs, with a drastically shortened lifetime. Notably, for AB3‐ and AB13‐type BNSLs with more proximal Au NPs around each UCNP, modified UCL with fine‐structured spectral lineshape is observed. These differences could be interpreted by the interplay of collective plasmon resonance introduced by 2D periodic Au arrays and spectrally selective energy transfer between UCNPs and Au. Thus, fabricating UCNP‐Au BNSLs with desired lattice parameters and NP configurations could be a promising way to tailor the UCL through controlled plasmonic modulation.

Heteroepitaxial Growth to Construct Hexagonal/Hexagonal β‐NaYF4:Yb,Tm/Cs4PbBr6 Multi‐Code Emitting Core/Shell Nanocrystals

Abstract:High‐quality hexagonal/hexagonal β‐NaYF4:Yb,Tm/Cs4PbBr6 core/shell nanocrystals are successfully synthesized owing to their similar crystal structures. The core/shell nanocrystals exhibit narrow‐band green emission centered at 524 nm under 980 nm excitation through a Förster resonance energy transfer process with a high efficiency of 58.33%. Further, the core/shell structure leads to excellent water and thermal cycling stability of Cs4PbBr6. Synthesis of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)‐metal halide perovskites (MHPs) heterostructure is garnered immense attentions due to their unparalleled photophysical properties. However, the obvious difference in their structural forms makes it a huge challenge. Herein, hexagonal β‐NaYF4 and hexagonal Cs4PbBr6 are filtrated to construct the UCNP/MHP heterostructural luminescent material. The similarity in their crystal structures facilitate the heteroepitaxial growth of Cs4PbBr6 on the surface of β‐NaYF4 NPs, leading to the formation of high‐quality β‐NaYF4:Yb,Tm/Cs4PbBr6 core/shell nanocrystals (NCs). Interestingly, this heterostructure endows the core/shell NCs with typically narrow‐band green emission centered at 524 nm under 980 nm excitation, which should be attributed to the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from Tm3+ to Cs4PbBr6. It is noteworthy that the FRET efficiency of β‐NaYF4:Yb,Tm/Cs4PbBr6 core/shell NCs (58.33%) is much higher than that of the physically mixed sample (1.84%). In addition, the reduced defect density, lattice anchoring effect, as well as diluted ionic bonding proportion induced by the core/shell structure further increase the excellent water‐resistance and thermal cycling stability of Cs4PbBr6. These findings open up a new way to construct UCNP/MHP heterostructure with better multi‐code luminescence performance and stability and promote its wide optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Monodisperse, oil-dispersible beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er(Tm) up-conversion (UC) luminescent nanospheres (NPs) have been successfully synthesized. The as-prepared NPs show high size-uniformity without any size-selection process, and the sizes of the NPs can be tuned in the range of 18 nm-45 nm, which are well suitable for biolabels. The NPs are thoroughly characterized and a growth mechanism is proposed. By co-doping Yb-Er or Yb-Tm, the as-prepared NPs can show bright green or blue UC luminescence under the irradiation of a 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser, and the UC luminescence can be obviously enhanced by constructing a NaYF4:Yb,Er@NaYF4 core/shell structure. Furthermore, the hydrophobic UC nanospheres (UCNPs) are converted into water-soluble by a robust ligand-exchange pathway with poly(acrylic acid). The presence of free carboxylic acid groups on their surfaces not only results in high solubility in water, but also allows further conjugation with biomolecules such as antigens, antibodies and oligonucleotides, which pave the way for potential bio-applications of the UCNPs.

Abstract:Plasmon-enhanced upconversion luminescence of NaYF4: Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped nanocrystals is investigated using a 3D plasmonic antenna architecture: a disk-coupled dots-on-pillar antenna array (D2PA). By tuning and optimizing the resonance frequency of the D2PA structure for upconversion luminescence, a 310-fold luminescence enhancement and an 8-fold reduction of the luminescence decay time are observed.
