Abstract:The facile and sustainable production of hydrogen through water reduction requires high performance catalyst consisting of earth abundant elements for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here we report the synthesis of ultrathin molybdenum disulfide/g-carbon nitride (MoS2/g-C3N4) vdW layers via an in situ interfacial engineering method. Such MoS2/g-C3N4 vdW layers show outstanding HER activity with comparable potential and Tafel slope to commercial Pt catalysts. Our experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) based calculations revealed that the unpreceded electrocatalytic performances originate from the strong interfacial coupling of vdW layers through out-of-plane Mo-N bonding, which therefore enhances hydrogen adsorption/reduction kinetics for HER. These findings will shed light on the programmable catalysts for low cost and highly active water reduction.

Abstract:A strong–metal support interaction construction was induced via ultrasonication in water as described by Zhenzhen Yang, Sheng Dai et al. in their Communication (e202214322). The encapsulation degree of metal nanoparticles by reducible oxide overlayers can be modulated by the ultrasonication parameters. The facile tunability offers enhanced activity and selectivity in diverse hydrogenation catalytic applications. Abstract:Nano-zinc oxide is a type of multifunctional inorganic material, which had been extensively used due to the excellent properties such as piezoelectricity, sterilization, and UV shielding. The methods used for preparing nano-zinc oxides include precipitation, low-temperature hydrothermal, sol-gel, spray pyrolysis, and gas-phase synthesis. All of the current methods share the same problems of long reaction time, large particle sizes, and uneven distribution of particle sizes. The supercritical hydrothermal synthesis is a promising method for nano-ZnO preparation, which has the advantages of fast reaction rates and uniform particle size distribution. In this paper, the mechanism of supercritical hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO (including reaction, crystallization, and growth mechanism) is introduced. Then the effects of key parameters (materials and process parameters) are summarized. Moreover, the effects of surface modification and doping on ZnO are analyzed. Some suggestions for improving the particle quality by supercritical hydrothermal synthesis are also presented, as well as the future research directions.

Abstract:Nano-zirconia has been widely applied due to its excellent physical and chemical properties (e.g., high strength, corrosion resistance, oxygen ion conductivity). Existing preparation methods of nano-zirconia tend to require long reaction time, and the sizes of final particles are large with uneven distributions. Sub-/supercritical hydrothermal synthesis of nanoparticles is favored by researchers owing to controllable reaction process, uniform particle size distribution, good reproducibility, short reaction time, high conversion rate and harmlessness to environment. In this paper, the characteristics and mechanisms of dissolution, crystallization and growth of nano-zirconia during sub-/supercritical hydrothermal synthesis are systematically reviewed. The influences of process and material parameters on the size and purity of particles are analyzed. Then, the reaction mechanism and product phase transition mechanism during hydrothermal synthesis of zirconia are summarized to provide a theoretical reference for the oriented preparation. Finally, the improvement and commercialization of sub-/ supercritical hydrothermal synthesis technology are evaluated, and the future research topics are proposed.
Supercritical Water Syntheses of Cextio2 Nano-Catalysts with A Strong Metal-Support Interaction for Selective Catalytic Reduction of No with Nh3

Abstract:This paper reported the feasibility of a supercritical water synthesis route (referred as CHFS) in the application of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3. A series of well-reported CexTiO2 SCR catalysts were synthesized and then subjected to a range of characterizations (e.g. XRD, XPS, H-2-TPR, HADDF, etc.). Experimental results revealed that the unusual and rapid crystallizing environment of the CHFS route had resulted in a highly dispersed CeO2 and a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) for CexTiO2 catalysts, which promoted the enriched surface oxygen vacancies and facilitated the formation of NO2 and nitrite species over the catalyst surface, effectively enhancing their SCR performances. Amongst the developed CexTiO2 catalysts, Ce0.25TiO2 revealed the highest SCR activity with more than 90% NO conversion being achieved in a broad temperature range of 240-440 degrees C. Such broad temperature window was proven due to the SMSI, which lowered the NH3 oxidation ability of CeO2, retaining the effective utilization of NH3 throughout the SCR process. The work conducted herein demonstrates the feasibility of the CHFS route in the syntheses of SMSI catalysts for SCR application and also explores the SCR reaction mechanism over the well-reported CexTiO2 catalysts. We expected that this work could shed some lights on the development of feasible preparative routes for the syntheses of advanced SMSI catalysts for SCR application. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The mechanism of multi-step nucleation, which means that a precursor phase exists before the formation of the final crystal, has undergone significant development as an advanced strategy for the production of high-performance structural materials and the mitigation of carbon emissions. This study investigated the potential transformation of C–S–H precursors in water, 98 % RH, and high-temperature environments. The findings suggest that C–S–H precursors, produced by disrupting the two-step nucleation process, can transform in both aqueous and 98%RH conditions, while high temperature alone is insufficient to induce the transformation. The progress of the transformation under 98%RH was impeded by the limited mass transport resulting from the constrained formation of nano-crystalline C–S–H in adsorbed water on the external surface and the pores. This study emphasizes the crucial role of water in facilitating the transformation process, presenting potential opportunities for the nanoengineering of C–S–H-based composites and cementitious materials.

Continuous Syntheses of Highly Dispersed Composite Nanocatalysts Via Simultaneous Co-Precipitation in Supercritical Water

Abstract:Nanosized Ce0.6Zr0.3La0.05Y0.05O2−δ/γ-Al2O3(CZA) composite supports were prepared in one step using a novel continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) route and a conventional co-precipitation route, followed by 10h heat-treatments at 1000°C in air (to simulate accelerated ageing). HAADF STEM and HR-TEM results indicated that the sample made via CHFS route (i.e., simultaneous co-precipitation in supercritical water, denoted as sc-CZA) had homogenously dispersed CZ particles on alumina support whilst that made via conventional co-precipitation route (denoted as co-CZA sample) had a strong segregation between CZ and alumina. As a consequence of these structural and morphological properties, better sintering behaviors upon accelerated ageing and lesser grain growth of CZ particles were obtained. The sc-CZA sample was then used as supports for syntheses of three-way catalysts (TWCs), in which Pd active species were added via either directly co-precipitating (in the CHFS reactor) or simply wet impregnating Pd2+ onto the support to form composite nanocatalysts. Catalytic measurements revealed that the former had yielded a significantly higher three-way catalytic activity than the latter, attributing to its much higher dispersion of Pd species and stronger interaction between Pd and CZA support.

Abstract:Well‐crystallized ZnO, ZrO2, TiO2, CeO2, Y2O3 and La2O3 nanoparticles are synthesized under supercritical water conditions (T > 647 K and P > 22.1 MPa) using a home‐made continuous process. At room temperature, metallic salts with or without aqueous hydroxide solution (KOH or NaOH) are pressurized to 25–30 MPa. Then, the reactant(s) is/are rapidly heated to 673–773 K by mixing with the supercritical water in a patented reactor. Residence time is in the range from 2 to 8 s. XRD, TEM and surface area analyses highlight the production of pure and well‐crystallized nanoparticles with a uniform size distribution. This environmentally friendly continuous process allows the rapid synthesis of nanosized metallic oxides under supercritical water (SCW) conditions (T>647K and P>22.1MPa) with a production rate exceeding 10g·h−1. Well‐crystallized ZnO, ZrO2, TiO2, CeO2, Y2O3 and La2O3 nanoparticles are sucessfully prepared in one step or just after calcination. This paper suggests also some mechanisms of nano‐oxide particle formation in SCW.

Abstract:To data, using strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) effect to improve the catalytic performance of metal catalysts is an important strategy for heterogeneous catalysis, and this effect is basically achieved by using reducible metal oxides. However, the formation of SMSI between metal and inert-support has been so little coverage and remains challenge. In this work, the SMSI effect can be effectively extended to the inert support-metal catalysis system to fabricate a Cu0/Cu-doped SiO2 catalyst with high dispersion and loading (38.5 wt.%) through the interfacial effect of inert silica. In the catalyst, subnanometric composite of Cu cluster and atomic copper (in the configuration of Cu-O-Si) can be consciously formed on the silica interface, and verified by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and high-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) characterization. The promoting activity in transfer-hydrogenation by the SMSI effect of Cu-silica interface and the synergistic active roles of cluster and atomic Cu have also been revealed from surface interface structure, catalytic activity, and density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculation at an atomic level. The subnanometric composite of cluster and atomic copper species can be derived from a facile synthesis strategy of metal-inert support SMSI effect and the realistic active site of Cu-based catalyst can also been identified accurately, thus it will help to expand the application of subnanometric materials in industrial catalysis.

Abstract:The construction of strong metal–support interactions (SMSIs) represented an attractive approach to producing supported noble metal nanocatalysts possessing enhanced stability by overlayer encapsulation. The development of facile approaches capable of achieving efficient, controllable, and extensive SMSI overlayer formation, particularly under neat and ambient conditions, is a long-standing challenge. In this work, a mechanochemistry-driven pathway was deployed for efficient and controllable SMSI construction under neat and ambient conditions to customize the capsulation degree and overlayer structures toward enhanced catalysis. The reducibility of the additives and the high interaction efficiency provided by the mechanochemical treatment could afford abundant active intermediates (e.g., Ti3+ species and oxygen defects) within a short time to induce and tune the overlayer encapsulation. This facile approach could be extensively deployed to TiO2-derived nanocatalysts with diverse phases, diverse reducible metal oxides-involved systems, and different supported noble metal nanoparticles. Enhanced hydrogenation activity was achieved by the as-afforded nanocatalysts upon SMSI construction and further tuned by the encapsulation degree.

Abstract:Zirconia/alumina composites are a family of structural ceramics with excellent mechanical properties. In order to improve the engineering reliability of this kind of composites, the uniform spatial distribution of the two phases is necessary. One of the effective methods to achieve this goal is to synthesize uniform zirconia–alumina composite nano powders. Here, we report mechanochemical synthesis of zirconia–alumina composite nano powders, in which dehydration and crystallization of Zr–Y–Al hydroxide can be achieved under milling conditions, leading to the formation of the tetragonal zirconia phase with supersaturated Al3+. The mechanochemically synthesized powders have the uniform element distribution and a fine primary crystallite size of around 11 nm. After sintering at 1400°C, t‐ZrO2/α‐Al2O3 composite with the uniform phase distribution and grain size distribution could be obtained. To uncover the full benefits of these supersaturated composite powders in ceramic processing, future work could be done to break up the deagglomerations and improve the sinterability of the mechanochemically synthesized zirconia/alumina powders.

Abstract:A general single-step strategy has been developed for the direct thermal decomposition of noble-metal salts in octadecylamine to synthesize octahedron- and rod-shaped noble-metal aggregates and monodisperse noble-metal or bimetallic alloy nanocrystals without introducing any additive into the system. It has presented a facile and economic way to fabricate these nanocrystals, especially alloy nanocrystals, which does not require a post-synthesis solid-state annealing process. The morphology of the nanocrystals can be easily controlled by tuning the synthetic temperature. Their ability to catalyze heterogeneous Suzuki coupling reactions has been investigated and showed satisfactory catalytic activity. The catalytic performance of the monometallic and bimetallic alloy nanocrystals were also evaluated in the selective hydrogenation of citral in a conventional organic solvent (toluene) and a green solvent (super-critical carbon dioxide, scCO(2)). Interestingly, the catalysts performed differently to each other when they were in scCO(2), owing to the different morphology, which should be readily optimized for further use.
Hydride-doped coinage metal superatoms and their catalytic applications

Abstract:Superatomic constructs have been identified as a critical component of future technologies. The isolation of coinage metal superatoms relies on partially reducing metallic frameworks to accommodate the mixed valent state required to generate a superatom. Controlling this reduction requires careful consideration in reducing the agent, temperature, and the ligand that directs the self-assembly process. Hydride-based reducing agents dominate the synthetic wet chemical routes to coinage metal clusters. However, within this category, a unique subset of superatoms that retain a hydride/s within the nanocluster post-reduction have emerged. These stable constructs have only recently been characterized in the solid state and have highly unique structural features and properties. The difficulty in identifying the position of hydrides in electron-rich metallic constructs requires the combination and correlation of several analytical methods, including ESI-MS, NMR, SCXRD, and DFT. This text highlights the importance of NMR in detecting hydride environments in these superatomic systems. Added to the complexity of these systems is the dual nature of the hydride, which can act as metallic hydrogen in some cases, resulting in entirely different physical properties. This review includes all hydride-doped superatomic nanoclusters emphasizing synthesis, structure, and catalytic potential.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed catalysts, with maximized atom utilization of expensive metal components and relatively stable ligand structures, offer high reactivity and selectivity. However, the formation of atomic‐scale metals without aggregation remains a formidable challenge due to thermodynamic stabilization driving forces. Here, a top‐down process is presented that starts from iron nanoparticles, using dual‐metal interbonds (RhFe bonding) as a chemical facilitator to spontaneously convert Fe nanoparticles to single atoms at low temperatures. The presence of RhFe bonding between adjacent Fe and Rh single atoms contributes to the thermodynamic stability, which facilitates the stripping of a single Fe atom from the Fe nanoparticles, leading to the stabilized single atom. The dual single‐atom Rh–Fe catalyst renders excellent electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction in an acidic electrolyte. This discovery of dual‐metal interbonding as a chemical facilitator paves a novel route for atomic dispersion of chemical metals and the design of efficient catalysts at the atomic scale.

Abstract:Atomically precise metal-chalcogenide supertetrahedral clusters (MCSCs) are supposed to be more attractive for functionalization than conventional metal-sulfide quantum dots owing to their potential ability of establishing structure-composition-property precise relationships. However, the accurate surface functionalization of such cluster-based species remains difficult. In this paper, we presented a facile method for synthesizing discrete MCSCs decorated with different functional groups via one-step solvothermal reaction, which was demonstrated to have better solvent dispersibility compared with ligand-free ones. In addition, the composites were also prepared by combining ligand-free clusters (or ligand-partially protected or amino-modified ones) with two-dimensional MXene nanosheets. And the composites derived from amino-modified clusters exhibited the optimal performance of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Furthermore, the hydrogen bonding interactions between modified amino groups and MXene nanosheets were verified by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. This work provides a facile approach for the surface functionalization of MCSCs, and facilitates to expand functionality of atomically precise nano-species.

Abstract:The atomic-scale yielding mechanisms of body centered cubic (BCC) iron in supercritical water have been an elusive problem that requires understanding the roles of chemical reactions with supercritical water in the mechanical behavior of iron. This work shows the combined effect of the supercritical water and tensile direction on the yielding mechanism of BCC iron using reactive molecular dynamics simulations. Our simulation results show that tensile strain along the <math>[11¯0]</math> direction of BCC iron may potentially exhibit much higher tensile strength and lower sensitivity to the environment compared with other directions. This is because yielding of iron along the <math>[11¯0]</math> direction originates from the homogenous generation of HCP precursors inside the iron bulk rather than at the surface, which limits the effects of surficial chemical reactions with supercritical water on the yielding behavior. This work is expected to contribute to the theoretical design of high-strength alloys in supercritical water.

Synergize Strong and Reactive Metal-Support Interactions to Construct Sub-2 nm Metal Phosphide Cluster for Enhanced Selective Hydrogenation Activities

Abstract:Strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) are crucial for stabilizing sub-2 nm metal sites, e.g. single atom (M1) or cluster (Mn). However, further optimizing sub-2 nm sites to break the activity-stability trade-off due to excessive interactions remains significant challenges. Accordingly, for the first time, we propose synergizing SMSI with reactive metal-support interactions (RMSI). Comprehensive characterization confirms that the SMSI stabilizes the metal and regulates the aggregation of Ni1 into Nin site within sub-2 nm. Meanwhile, RMSI modulates Nin through sufficiently activating P in the support and eventually generates sub-2 nm metal phosphide Ni2P cluster (Ni2Pn). The synergetic metal-support interactions triggered the adaptive coordination and electronic structure optimization of Ni2Pn, leading to the desired substrate adsorption-desorption kinetics. Consequently, the activity of Ni2Pn site greatly enhanced towards the selective hydrogenations of p-chloronitrobenzene and alkynyl alcohol. The formation rates of target products are up to 20.2 and 3.0 times greater than that of Ni1 and Nin site, respectively. This work may open a new direction for metal-support interactions and promote innovation and application of active sites below 2 nm.

Abstract:The supported metal catalysts are usually prepared and widely applied in aqueous phase. Here, by performing density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations with explicit solvent waters, the metal-support interaction of Pd@ZrO2 catalyst was found to be enhanced by water dissociation at the metal-support interface. This happens to an appreciable number of interfacial waters, generating ∼ 25% hydrides compared to Pd atoms. After the partially heterolytic water dissociation, the generated Hδ+ would undergo the proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) from Pd to form the hydride (Hδ-). The spatial separation of the generated H on Pd and remaining OH on ZrO2 results in the polarization of metal-support interface, which then flattens the shape of cluster. Moreover, the formed metal-hydride behaves as the new catalytic active phase for CO oxidation, making the catalyst highly active in water vapor.
