Abstract:A bi-functional sugar-based surfactant ALA14 was designed as the ligand and micelle constructor and demonstrated to promote the copper-catalyzed C-X coupling reaction in water. The nature of this micelle, formed by sugar-based surfactants, was investigated with CMC, DLS, and TEM, via which encapsulating and aggregation of the substrates in micelle were verified. Additionally, it was addressed by 1H-NMR analysis that the enrichment position of the substrates is in the lipophilic alkyl chain. Finally, moderate to excellent yields of the aimed products were obtained in this work. This remarkably simple strategy expanded the scope of C-X coupling reaction in water; most notably, both water and ALA14 can be recycled and reused.

Abstract:A tandem process of micellar catalysis and cloud point extraction (CPE) is developed for copper-catalyzed Ullmann C-S coupling reactions in water. The functional nonionic surfactant, amine terminated polyether M2070, affords nano-micelle environment in the aqueous system; the latter splits to two phases above the cloud point temperature (CPT). The nature of the micellar catalysis in M2070 aqueous was investigated by DLS, EDS, XPS, IR, TEM and 1H NMR. M2070 was verified to provide nano-space for encapsulation and aggregation of the substrates. More importantly, the metallic micelle formed by M2070 chelating copper was identified. It is noteworthy that excellent productivity in pre-micellar catalysis of C-S coupling reactions was obtained with good tolerance of substrate. Finally, the water-micelle system was separated into two phases above the CPT thus to achieve the product separation. Furthermore, the M2070/water system can be recycled and reused.
Facile Synthesis of Hydrochar Supported Copper Nanocatalyst for Ullmann C-N Coupling Reaction in Water

Abstract:The exploration of inexpensive and stable heterogeneous catalysts and application of green solvents for Ullmann C-N coupling reaction remain challenging. We present a facile fabrication of copper nanoparticles on hydrochar as prepared from natural, inexpensive and renewable chitosan together with in-situ reduction of copper salt in a one-pot hydrothermal carbonization process. The copper nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on hydrochar by choosing block copolymer F127 as surfactant. Moreover, maleic acid was introduced to improve the hydrophilicity of hydrochar. The most active copper nanocomposite catalyst, that is, Cu/HCS-MA-F127, exhibited excellent catalytic activity for Ullmann C-N coupling reaction in water. The nature of the Cu/HCS-MA-F127 was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, TG, XRD, SEM and XPS. Moderate to excellent yields of aimed products were gained by using this catalytic strategy. Moreover, the Cu/HCS-MA-F127 catalyst can be reused by simple centrifugal recovery with a stable performance.

Abstract:The facile and sustainable production of hydrogen through water reduction requires high performance catalyst consisting of earth abundant elements for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here we report the synthesis of ultrathin molybdenum disulfide/g-carbon nitride (MoS2/g-C3N4) vdW layers via an in situ interfacial engineering method. Such MoS2/g-C3N4 vdW layers show outstanding HER activity with comparable potential and Tafel slope to commercial Pt catalysts. Our experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) based calculations revealed that the unpreceded electrocatalytic performances originate from the strong interfacial coupling of vdW layers through out-of-plane Mo-N bonding, which therefore enhances hydrogen adsorption/reduction kinetics for HER. These findings will shed light on the programmable catalysts for low cost and highly active water reduction.

Abstract:The realization of water electrolysis on the basis of highly active, cost-effective electrocatalysts is significant yet challenging for achieving sustainable hydrogen production from water. Herein, N-doped Ni3 S2 /N-doped MoS2 1D hetero-nanowires supported by Ni foam (N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF) are readily synthesized through a chemical transformation strategy by using NiMoO4 nanowire array growth on Ni foam (NiMoO4 /NF) as the starting material. With the in situ generation of Ni3 S2 /MoS2 heterointerfaces within nanowires and the incorporation of N- anions, an extraordinary hydrophilic nature with abundant, well-exposed active sites and optimal reaction dynamics for both oxidation and reduction of water are obtained. Attributed to these properties, as-converted N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF exhibits highly efficient electrocatalytic activities for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions under alkaline conditions. The superior bifunctional properties of N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF enable it to effectively catalyze the overall water-splitting reaction.

Abstract:Heterogenous copper nanoparticle (Cu NP) catalysts supported on magnetic nitrogen (N)-doped carbon–silica materials with a core–shell structure were fabricated by a facile one-pot hydrothermal carbonization reaction. The Cu NPs with a diameter of 10 nm were generated by an in situ process in which the Cu2+ was reduced by glucosamine. The N atoms doped into the magnetic nanocomposites were derived from glucosamine and anchored to the Cu NPs. The hydrophilicity of the carbon-based shell promoted uniform dispersion of the resulting core–shell nanoparticles in water. Moreover, the mesoporous carbon not only improved the mass transfer efficiency of the organic substrates to and from the catalysts but also prevented the Cu NPs from aggregating and leaching. Owing to these merits, the resultant magnetic nanocomposite particles Fe3O4@SiO2@GA/Cu exhibited excellent catalytic activity for aqueous C–N coupling reactions without any additives, as well as showed good universality toward different aryl halides and various nitrogen nucleophiles with moderate to excellent yields. More importantly, the Fe3O4@SiO2@GA/Cu catalysts were easily recovered using an external magnet and showed stable performance over five reaction cycles.

Synergistic effect of Cu+ single atoms and Cu nanoparticles supported on alumina boosting water-gas shift reaction

Abstract:The water-gas shift reaction (WGSR) is an important industrial process for H2 production. Here, we rationally construct alumina supported dual-site copper catalysts, i.e. Cu+ single atoms (Cu1+) surrounding Cu nanoparticles (CuNP0), for WGSR. Our findings show that CO is tightly adsorbed on surface-enriched Cu1+ sites to inhibit competitive adsorption with H2O on CuNP0 sites. The number of adsorbed CO is two orders of magnitude higher than that on conventional Cu-based catalysts. It significantly increases surface CO concentration, and forms a unique structure of CuNP0 “islands” immerged in CO “pool”. Benefiting from synergy of Cu1+ and CuNP0 sites, the catalyst with 12% Cu loading exhibits extraordinary and robust catalytic activity, compared to benchmark Cu-Zn-Al catalyst, especially at low temperatures, e.g. 200 °C. The catalyst design strategy and facile synthesis methodology employed in this work could be potentially applied in other related industrial reactions.

Abstract:Photothermal nanomaterials have showed great potential for development in simultaneous pollutant purification and freshwater recovery. In this study, a novel composite composed of hollow N-doping SiC porous hybrid network with the integration of CoCu bimetal species was constructed by a simple self-assembly and temperature-modulated approach. Such a hollow porous hybrid nanoreactor is endowed with abundant synergetic CuCo bimetallic reactive sites and polar pyrrolic N sites, which improves the enrichment of pollutants and intermetallic redox pairs. Ultrafine nanocrystals corresponding to Co 2 SiO 4 over the hybrid framework can be evidenced by HRTEM technique. The experimental results showed that the optimal CoSiCu-6 degraded norfloxacin (NFX) by 90.7% in 10 min with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.493 min −1 , which was about 6.49 folds enhancement compared to Cu-free CoSi-6 counterparts, achieving a low reaction activation energy (18.02 kJ mol −1 ) during the reaction. Control experiments including anion interference and broad applicability for pollutants degradation were further explored, emphasizing the excellent performance of CoSiCu-6 in the practical contaminant removal. The mechanism study showed that, single linear oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) coupled with electron-transfer process work as the main activation routes dominating the degradation process. In addition, Co 3+ /Co 2+ /Cu 2+ redox pairs and oxygen vacancies (O v ) play a key role in the PMS activation process. The obtained optimal catalyst was further explored for solar-driven photothermal interfacial water evaporation, showing a rational cleanwater recovery efficiency (∼1.3 kg m −2 h −1 ) from the polluted wastewater. In addition, monolith floatable evaporator was constructed by anchoring CoSiCu-6 onto a tailored melamine sponge foam via a calcium ion-triggered sodium alginate cross-linking strategy, affording an excellent evaporation performance (2.16 kg m −2 h −1 ) and coupled norfloxacin degradation efficiency (93.6%, within 5 min). This innovative monolithic evaporator made of CoCu integrated SiC hybrid nanosphere has a powerful dual function of rapidly degrading pollutants and facilitating solar-powered regeneration of contaminated wastewater due to its unique hollow porous structure and the CoCu bimetallic synergistic action that provides a rich set of reaction sites, which is promising for the treatment of complicated wastewater.

Abstract:Fixation of CO2 into dihydroisobenzofuran derivatives has enormous applications in both production of natural products and antidepressant drugs, and reducing the green-house effect. However, the relatively complicated multi-step processes limit the further expansion of such a valuable CO2 conversion strategy. Herein, we hierarchically modify the surface of Cu nanoparticles (NPs) with Ag NPs and the robust metal-organic framework (MOF), ZIF-8, and report the presence of the Cu-Ag yolk-shell nanoalloy based heterogeneous catalysts, Cu@Ag and Cu@Ag@ZIF-8. The latter exhibits a crystalline "raisin bread" structure and specific synergic activity for catalyzing the tandem reactions of intra-molecular H-transfer, C-C and C-O coupling, cyclization, and carboxylation from CO2, leading to the first non-homogeneous preparation of dihydroisobenzofuran derivatives in high yield, selectivity, and recyclability under mild conditions. Theoretical calculations elucidate the tandem reaction pathway synergically catalyzed by Cu@Ag@ZIF-8, which offers insights for designing multiphase catalysts towards both organic synthesis and CO2 fixation through tandem processes in one pot.

Abstract:A recyclable AGA8@Cu(I) nanocluster generated by in situ reduction was demonstrated to promote the synthesis of disulfides from chlorides and Na2S2O3 in water at room temperature. A sustainable and green catalytic strategy for C‐S coupling reactions is developed by combining micelle and transition metal. The synergistic AGA8@Cu(I) catalyst forms by spontaneous anchoring of the in situ generated Cu(I) nanoclusters onto the AGA8 micelles and has been fully characterized by FT‐IR, XPS, SEM, TEM, EDS, and ICP‐OES. The catalyst is recyclable and highly effective in mediating the conversion of halides to disulfides in water at room temperature with a broad substrate scope.

Abstract:A simple and efficient strategy to stabilize complex emulsions with cellulose nanocrystal surfactants and fluorosurfactants is developed. By using the concentration or pH as the stimulus, reconfiguration of complex emulsions from encapsulated to Janus structures can be achieved. With complex emulsions serving as templates, particles of different shapes including hollow, semi‐spherical, and spherical can be synthesized on large scale. Using nanoparticle surfactants to stabilize the liquid‐liquid interface has attracted significant attention for developing all‐liquid constructs including emulsions and liquid devices. Here, an efficient strategy is demonstrated to stabilize complex emulsions that consist of multiphase droplets by using the co‐assembly between the cellulose nanocrystal and amine‐functionalized polystyrene. Cellulose nanocrystal surfactants (CNCSs) form and assembly in situ at the specified area of emulsion interface, showing a unique pH responsiveness due to their dynamic nature and allowing the reconfiguration of complex emulsion from encapsulated to Janus structures. Such complex emulsions can be further used as the templates to fabricate polymeric particles with hollow, semi‐spherical, and spherical shapes on large scale. These findings establish a promising platform for designing intelligent soft matter that can be used in microreactors, sensors, and anisotropic materials.

In-depth understanding the synergisms of Cu atomic clusters on Cu single atoms for highly effective electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction and Zn-Air battery

Abstract:In this paper, a novel, simple and mild soft template assisted strategy and further carbonization approach has been constructed to the size-tunable preparation of porous Cu-N-C/Surfactant catalysts successfully. Note that the pluronic F127 has a significant influence on the synthesis of porous Cu-N-C/F127 with the atomically dispersed Cu-N4 and adjacent Cu atomic clusters (ACs) than other surfactants owing to their particular non-ionic structure. By combining a series of experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the synergistic effects between the adjacent Cu ACs and atomically dispersed Cu-N4 are favorable for manipulating the binding energy of O2 adsorption and intermediates desorption at the atomic interface of catalysts, resulting in an excellent electrocatalytic ORR performance with a faster kinetics for Cu-N-C/F127 than those of the Cu-N-C, Cu-N-C/CTAB, Cu-N-C/SDS, and comparable with the commercial Pt/C catalyst. This method not only provides a novel approach for synthesizing highly effective copper based single atom catalysts toward ORR, but also offers an in-depth understanding of the synergisms of adjacent ACs on the Cu single atoms (SAs) for highly effective electrocatalytic ORR and Zn-air Battery.
Directing the Architecture of Surface-Clean Cu2O for CO Electroreduction.

Abstract:Tailoring the morphology of nanocrystals is a promising way to enhance their catalytic performance. In most previous shape-controlled synthesis strategies, surfactants are inevitable due to their capability to stabilize different facets. However, the adsorbed surfactants block the intrinsic active sites of the nanocrystals, reducing their catalytic performance. For now, strategies to control the morphology without surfactants are still limited but necessary. Herein, a facile surfactant-free synthesis method is developed to regulate the morphology of Cu2O nanocrystals (e.g., solid nanocube, concave nanocube, cubic framework, branching nanocube, branching concave nanocube, and branching cubic framework) to enhance the electrocatalytic performance for the conversion of CO to n-propanol. Specifically, the Cu2O branching cubic framework (BCF-Cu2O), which is difficult to fabricate using previous surfactant-free methods, is fabricated by combining the concentration depletion effect and the oxidation etching process. More significantly, the BCF-Cu2O-derived catalyst (BCF) presents the highest n-propanol current density (-0.85 mA cm-2) at -0.45 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (VRHE), which is fivefold higher than that of the surfactant-coated Cu2O nanocube-derived catalyst (SFC, -0.17 mA cm-2). In terms of the n-propanol Faradaic efficiency in CO electroreduction, that of the BCF exhibits a 41% increase at -0.45 VRHE as compared with SFC. The high catalytic activity of the BCF that results from the clean surface and the coexistence of Cu(100) and Cu(110) in the lattice is well-supported by density functional theory calculations. Thus, this work presents an important paradigm for the facile fabrication of surface-clean nanocrystals with an enhanced application performance.
Catalytic Janus Nanoparticle-Based Recyclable Emulsifiers for Collaborative Treatment of Water-Soluble and Water-Insoluble Organic Pollutants

Abstract:Removal of multiple organic pollutants in one port is the target of wastewater treatment. In this study, paramagnetic Janus particles as recyclable and catalytic colloidal surfactants were employed to achieve this goal. In this method, water-insoluble organic pollutants can be stabilized with paramagnetic Janus particles and removed directly by an external magnetic field. Most importantly, water-soluble organic pollutants can be catalyzed into water-insoluble products, transferred to the original water-insoluble organic pollutants, and removed together. Consequently, both water-soluble and water-insoluble organic pollutants in wastewater can be removed in one step. Using water-soluble methyl orange (MO) and water-insoluble n-decane as models, MO was efficiently degraded and the water-insoluble degradation products were transferred into the n-decane phase. Subsequently, 98.6% of MO and 99.9% of n-decane were efficiently removed in one port. This approach represented a general and practical strategy for treating mixtures of multiple organic pollutants in actual organically polluted water.

Abstract:The manuscript designs a hollow cuprous oxide protected by a thin N‐doped carbon shell (H–Cu2O@C/N) as an efficient nanoreactor to stabilize the Cu+ species and enhance the coverage concentration of *CO on the local catalyst surface under the spatial confinement effect, which efficiently accelerates C–C coupling to generate C2+ products. Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction offers a promising pathway to transform renewable electricity into value‐added fuels and feedstocks in the form of chemical energy. However, the *CO intermediates tend to obtain protons or electrons to generate C1 products. The Cu+, an active catalytic site for C2+ products, is easily reduced to Cu0 at cathodic potentials. Herein, a hollow cuprous oxide protected by a thin N‐doped carbon shell (H–Cu2O@C/N) as an efficient nanoreactor to stabilize the Cu+ species and enhance the coverage concentration of *CO on the local catalyst surface under the spatial confinement effect is designed, which efficiently accelerates C–C coupling to generate C2+ products. As a result, H–Cu2O@C/N exhibits an outstanding C2+ Faradaic efficiency of 75.9% with a partial current density of 248.8 mA cm−2 in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzer. Density functional theory combined with operando characterizations confirm that the N‐doped carbon layer protects the Cu+ active species from electrochemical reduction, and the high coverage density of *CO from spatial confinement effect lowers the reaction barrier of *CH2CHO, thereby promoting C–C coupling. This work offers invaluable insights into the spatial confinement effect for boosting the steering C–C coupling in Cu‐based catalysts for efficient electroreduction of CO2 to C2+ products.

In the present work, mixed monolayers of surfactin and branched alkylbenzene sulfonate at the n ‐decane/water interface were studied using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, and the presence of surfactin affecting the microstructure and dynamic properties of the mixed monolayer was evaluated at molecular level. The density distributions of the surfactants along the direction normal to the interface, radial distribution functions of the surfactant head groups, hydrophobic contacts between surfactants, translational activities of both surfactants and counterions, and the dynamics of the hydrogen bonds formed between surfactant and water were calculated. The results suggested that the structure of the mixed monolayers was more compact than that of the individual system of alkylbenzene sulfonate and the interfacial tension was more efficiently reduced, and the translational activities of both surfactants within the mixed monolayers were much lower. The results implied that biosurfactant surfactin and alkylbenzene sulfonate mixed well at the n ‐decane/water interface, though they were both anionic surfactants.
Building the Confined CoS2/MoS2 Nanoreactor Via Interface Electronic Reconfiguration to Synchronously Enhance Activity and Stability of Heterogeneous Fenton-like Reactions

Abstract:Herein, we synthesized CoS2/MoS2 catalysts with vertical interface structures to enhance peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The characterization, experimental, and calculation results jointly reveal that the strong interface interaction (Co−S−Mo bond) regulates the electronic structure of CoS2/MoS2 to optimize the generation process of the main reactive oxygen species (SO4•−) and stabilizes the coordination structure of the active sites to greatly improve catalytic robustness. The unique interface structure of CoS2/MoS2 constructs the confined nanoreactor to adsorb pollutants and capture pollutant electrons,whcih can shorten the migration distance of SO4•− and improve the electron transfer rate, ultimately increasing the utilization and conversion rate of PMS. CoS2/MoS2 achieved outstanding activity (0.302min−1), stability (93% of reactivity maintained after eight runs), and acid-base resistance (working pH range 3–11) for sulfamethazine degradation. This work provides a clear perspective for the rational design and optimization of interface engineering-mediated dual component catalysts in the Fenton-like reactions.

Insights into the Complex Interaction Between Hydrophilic Nanoparticles and Ionic Surfactants at the Liquid/air Interface.

Abstract:Combinations of nanoparticles and surfactants have been widely employed in many industrial processes, i.e., boiling and condensation in heat transfer and hydraulic fracturing in shale oil and gas production, etc. However, the underlying mechanism for various phenomena resulting from the addition of nanoparticles into the surfactant solutions is still unclear. For instance, there are contradictory conclusions from the literature regarding the variations of surface tension upon the addition of nanoparticles into surfactant solutions. In this work, the dominating factors determining if the surface activity of the surfactant solution will increase or conversely decrease when adding certain kinds of nanoparticles have been investigated. Two typical hydrophilic nanoparticles, SiO2 and TiO2 with anionic or cationic surfactants, respectively, have been considered. The surface tension has been measured in a wide range of nanoparticle and surfactant concentrations. It was found that the surface tension of the ionic surfactant solution can be further reduced only if nanoparticles of the same charge were added. For instance, a system containing 0.25 CMC SDS and 1 wt% SiO2 behaves similar to a 0.34 CMC SDS-only solution. Interestingly, the observed synergistic effect is found to be more significant if the surfactant concentration is much lower than its CMC for a given nanoparticle content. Moreover, the effect is perfectly reversible. When the nanoparticles were separated from the system, the surface tension values recovered fully to that of the pure surfactants. If nanoparticles of opposite charge were added, however, the surface tension of the surfactant solution increased. Zeta potential measurement and centrifugal treatment have been employed to reveal the interplay between nanoparticles and surfactants and the adsorption behavior of their assemblies at the liquid/air interface. Based on the experimental outcomes, a possible physical mechanism was proposed. It was concluded that the electrostatic repulsion between surfactant molecules and nanoparticles should be the dominant factor responsible for the observed reversible synergistic effect. Our study is expected to contribute to a better understanding of the interfacial phenomenon in nanoparticle-surfactant complex systems.
