Abstract:A series of nickel and palladium complexes bearing (imino)pyridyl alcohol tridentate [N,N,O] ligands, 2-(ArNCMe)-6-{(HO)CR2}C5H3N (L1–L4), were synthesized and sufficiently characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis along with X-ray diffraction analysis. The X-ray diffraction demonstrated that five-coordinated nickel halide complexes (1a–4a and 1b) and six-coordinated nickel acetate complex (1c) were prepared, and cationic palladium complexes (1d and 2d) formed with the [PdCl4]2− counterion. All these complexes displayed high catalytic activities up to 1.883 × 107 g(PNB) mol−1(cat) h−1 (2d) for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene on treatment with excess methylaluminoxane (MAO), affording the vinyl-type PNBs with high molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The parameters of reaction conditions, the type of metals and steric effects of coordinative ligands had influences on the catalytic properties.

Abstract:A series of mono- and di-nuclear nickel(II) complexes bearing 3-aryliminomethyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde ligands were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and elemental analysis along with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the dinuclear nickel complexes formed with two bridged ligands and one bromide around each nickel center and the mononuclear nickel complexes bearing two centrosymmetrical ligands exhibited a distorted square-planar geometry. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), all these nickel complexes displayed high catalytic activities up to 9.88 × 107 g(PNB) mol−1(Ni) h−1 (6b) for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene, yielding the vinyl-type PNBs with high molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. The steric and electronic factors of ligands and reaction parameters had influences on the catalytic properties.

Abstract:But-3-en-1-ol has been pre-protected by triisobutylaluminium and terpolymerized with ethylene and norbornene by rac-[Et(Ind)(2)]ZrCl2/MAO catalysts. The strong polarity of diisobutyl(but-3-en-1-oxy)aluminum causes a slight reduction in the catalyst activity and yields a small fraction of crystallinity. The but-3-en-1-ol content in the terpolymer is as high as 3.2% and can be readily adjusted by varying the reaction conditions. When the norbornene/ethylene ratio is over 10, the norbornene incorporation efficiency is not affected by the polar monomer and is close to that of the copolymerization. Similar to the ethylene/norbornene copolymers, the thermal properties of the obtained terpolymers are mainly determined by their norbornene contents.

Abstract:The effects of copolymer composition, copolymer composition distribution, and polar alpha-olefin incorporation on transparency, refractive index, and hydrophilicity of resultant ethylene-norbornene copolymer films were investigated. It has been found that the transparency is mainly determined by the copolymer composition distribution. The samples having uniform compositions gave better transparency. However, the copolymer composition distribution had little effect on refractive index. The refractive index increased linearly with increasing norbornene content. Furthermore, the incorporation of polar alpha-olefin with long carbon chain improved refractive index and hydrophilicity of the films. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The copolymer of norbornene with 1-octene was prepared by the catalysis of the ternary catalytic system consisted of bis (phenoxy-imine) titanium complex (Ti) , triisobutyl aluminum (Al) and organoboron compound (B) . The obtained copolymer showed a modest molecular weight(M-w: ca. 3.0x10(4)-6.5 x 10(4)) and broad molecular weight distribution (MWD: ca. 2.0 ) . The influence of copolymerization conditions was explored. The optimal copolymerization conditions are as follows ; n(Al)/n(Ti) = 5:1, n(B)/n(Ti) = 1:1, n( Monomer)/n(Ti) = 400:1, n(NBE)/n(OC) = 5:5 , polymerized at 40 degrees C for 6 h and the copolymer yield reached up to 43. 7%. The reactivity ratios of norbornene and 1-octene were 3. 01 and 0. 08 , respectively , tending to form a random copolymer. The copolymer exhibited good thermal stability (T-d > 300 degrees C) and moderate glass transition temperature (T-g = 87-174 degrees C ) controlled by the content of norbornene in the backbone.

Abstract:A ternary catalytic system consisting of a bis(phenoxyimine) titanium complex, triisobutylaluminium and an organoboron compound exhibited high activity in the vinyl-type homopolymerization of norbornene. The obtained polynorbornene showed a modest molecular weight (M-n approximate to 5 x 10(4) g mol(-1)) and broad molecular weight distribution (polydispersity index approximate to 3.5). A copolymer of norbornene with 1,3-butadiene was prepared using a binary catalytic system consisting of bis(phenoxyimine) titanium complex and triisobutylaluminium. The norbornene units in the copolymer adopted a vinyl-type addition structure confirmed using distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer 135 C-13 NMR microstructure analyses. Polymerization kinetics studies showed that neither monomer feed ratio nor conversion had an effect on the composition of the copolymer backbone which was composed of 55% norbornene units and 45% 1,3-butadiene units. The essentially constant polymer composition implied an alternating nature of chain propagation. The copolymer exhibited good thermal stability and moderate glass transition temperature (50.9-68.2 degrees C) with a relatively high molecular weight (M-w = 0.18 x 10-1.31 x 10(5) g mol(-1)), and excellent transparency (maximal transmittance >80%). Abstract:Herein a two-step process for the synthesis of 2-norbornanone with 91 % overall yield has been developed. The addition of sublimation inhibitors suppressed the sublimation of norbornene in the process of sulfuric acid-promoted hydration and increased the yield of 2-norbornanol significantly under mild conditions. Additionally, reuse of sulfuric acid has been achieved. A 4-hydroxy-TEMPO/CuCl/TBN triple-component catalyst system for the highly selective aerobic oxidation of 2-norbornanol was developed and displayed high atom efficiency and yield.

Abstract:Polymerization of norbornene has been promoted by a catalyst system composed of [2-methyl-8-(diphenylphosphino)quinoline]nickel dichloride and MAO. The catalytic system showed high activity (activity < 1.70 x 10(8) g-PNB/mol-Ni h) for vinyl addition type polymerization. The resultant polynorbornenes possessed high molecular weight (M-w < 2.08 x 10(6) g/mol) with wide molecular weight distribution (M-w/M-n < 19.20), and were soluble, showing no crystallinity in the solid state. The catalytic activity, molecular weight as well as polydispersity of the resultant polymer can be controlled over a wide range by varying the reaction parameters. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Copolymerization of norbornene (NBE) with isoprene (IP) catalyzed by traditional Ziegler-Natta system composed of TiCl4 and Al(i-Bu)(3) was studied. The PNBE-co-IP copolymers obtained have number-average molecular weights of 2.0x10(4)-6.5x10(4) as well as relatively narrow molecular weight distribution from the range of 1. 5 to 2. 9, and soluble in common organic solvents. The influences of catalyst composition, polymerization conditions, and the monomer feeding ratio on the copolymerization were investigated. The copolymer with 96% yield, 45% (molar fraction) of NBE, and number-average molecular weight of 6.5x10(4) can be prepared under the following optimum conditions; n(NBE) n(IP), 4 6, n(Al) n(Ti) = 5 : 1, n(Monomer) n(Ti), 200 1, 40 degrees C, polymerized in toluene for 6 h. The NBE content in copolymer can be controlled in the range of 26%-60% by varying the feeding ratio of comonomer, and the T-g of the copolymer increased with the increasing of NBE content in copolymer. The microstructures of the obtained copolymers were confirmed by H-1 NMR and C-13 DEPT135 NMR, and indicate that the NBE monomer undergo an addition-type polymerization during the copolymerization with isoprene. The reactivity ratios of two monomers were determined to be r(NBE) = 0. 07 and r(IP) = 0. 44 by the Kelen-Tudos method.

Abstract:Norbornene polymerization and ethylene/norbornene copolymerization were studied using constrained geometry complexes 2-(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)-4,6-di-tert-butylphenoxytitanium dichloride (1), 2-(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)-6-tert-butylphenoxytitanium dichloride (2), and 2-(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)-6-phenylphenoxytitanium dichloride (3) as catalysts with AliBu3 and Ph3CB(C6F5)4 as cocatalysts. Polymerization results indicate that these catalyst systems are highly active for both the homopolymerization of norbornene and the copolymerization of ethylene with norbornene. The norbornene homopolymerization is vinyl addition polymerization. Ethylene/norbornene copolymers with high norbornene incorporation (>50%) were easily obtained with these catalyst systems by increasing the norbornene feed concentration. The produced polymers were characterized by 13C NMR, IR, DSC and GPC.

Abstract:A series of neutral salicylaldiminato Ni(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized, and complexes a and e have been confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analyses. These compounds show highly catalytic activities for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene with MAO cocatalyst, which could be up to 2.86 x 10(8) g PNB/(mol Ni(.)h), and also lead to various activities, molecular weights, and distributions of polynorbornenes under different reaction conditions.

Abstract:Copolymerizations of norbornene with styrene were carried out with a catalytic System of anilido-imino nickel complex (ArN=CHC6H4NAr)NiBr (Ar = 2,6-dimethylphenyl) and methylaluminoxane in toluene. The influence of the comonomer feed content and polymerization temperature on the conversion and composition of the copolymers with (ArN=CHC6H4NAr)NiBr/methylaluminoxane was investigated. An increase in the initial styrene feed content led to an increase in the incorporated styrene content of the resulting copolymer. The determination of the reactivity ratios showed a much high reactivity for norbornene (reactivity ratio for styrene = 0.26, reactivity ratio for norbornene = 20.78), which was consistent with a coordination mechanism. NMR analysis of the end groups further confirmed that the chain was initiated through a styrene secondary insertion or a norbornene insertion into Ni-H and terminated through beta-H elimination from an inserted styrene unit. Abstract:We demonstrate that polynorbornene containing dibromomaleimide side group is a novel polymer platform for post-polymerization modification. Polymer P0 was obtained through ring-opening metathesis polymerization of monomer 2 by using Grubbs third generation catalyst. Subsequently, P0 was chemically modified with 1-butanethiol and benzyl mercaptan to generate P1 and P2, respectively. In this way, the dibromomaleimide units on polymer side chain were quantitatively converted to dithiolmaleimide moieties. All the polymer samples exhibited good thermal stability and relatively high glass transition temperature. Meanwhile, the effects of substituent and solvent on fluorescent properties of the polymers were elucidated.

Abstract:A series of three recently synthesised tetradentate chelated alpha-diimine nickel complexes of the type [NiBr2(Ar-BIAN)] (where Ar = 2-(1-R-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)phenyl; R = benzyl 1, 1-phenyl-ethyl 2, phenyl 3) are used as precatalysts for the polymerisation of norbornene. When activated with MAO, 1-3 are highly active catalysts for the production of high molecular weight polynorbornene (e. g., 1.39 x 10(7) g PNB mol Ni-1 . h(-1)). The catalytic activity and polymer molecular weight increase markedly with the initial concentration of norbornene, but both parameters decrease with the reaction time. The characterisation of the poly-norbornenes by NMR, GPC/SEC, X-ray diffraction, and DSC/TGA leads to the assignment of a structure typical of a polynorbornene originated by a coordination vinyl addition mechanism.

Abstract:Heterogeneous Ti-containing MCM-41 materials were prepared for the photocatalytic isomerization of norbornadiene to quadricyclane with the aim of replacing homogeneous sensitizers. Chemical grafting produces quantum-size TiO 2 crystallites highly dispersed in the pore of MCM-41. Isomorphous substitution generates Ti species in the framework of MCM-41, but some non-framework species are formed with increasing Ti content. It is found that Ti-containing MCM-41 materials show significantly higher photocatalytic activity than bulk TiO 2 , and the framework Ti species are more active than the surface-dispersed species.

Abstract:High Performance Polymers, Ahead of Print. A homo- and three co-polycarbonates (PC-NBs) bearing pendant norbornenyl groups were synthesized via solution polycondensation of triphosgene with 4, 4'-(bicyclo (2.2.1) hept-5-en-2 yl methylene) bis (2-methoxyphenol) (BPA-NB) or various mol % compositions of BPA-NB and bisphenol-A, respectively. 1H-NMR spectroscopy confirmed the chemical structure and composition of PC-NBs. Inherent viscosity and number-average molecular weight (Mn) values of PC-NBs were in the range 0.44 – 0.64 dL g−1 and 21,800 – 34,100 g mol−1, respectively, indicating the formation of polymers of medium to reasonably high molecular weights. Tough, transparent, and flexible films of PC-NBs could be cast from chloroform solution. X-Ray diffraction studies indicated the amorphous nature of PC-NBs. Glass transition temperature (Tg) values, determined by DSC analysis, of PC-NBs were in the range 154 – 175°C and Tg values increased with the increase in mol % of BPA-NB. The post-polymerization modification of a representative PC-NB was demonstrated using 3,6-diphenyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine via tetrazine-ene reaction.

Abstract:A series of 1,2-bis(imidazolidin-2-imine)benzene nickel complexes with different substituents on the imidazolidin-2-imine or benzene ring was synthesized and characterized. The complexes exhibited a tetrahedral configuration, and Ni2 bearing a phenyl substituent on the imine ligand provided highest steric hinderance around nickel center with a buried volume percentage of 53.1%. The nickel complexes in the presence methylaluminoxane (MAO) were highly active for the addition polymerization of norbornene and exhibited good thermal stability, where Ni3 bearing fluorine substituent on the benzene ligand backbone showed highest activity of 1.68 × 106 g·mol-1·h-1 at 100 °C to produce high molecular weight polynorbornene (1.2 ×105 g·mol-1). Most importantly, the catalysts promoted the copolymerization of norbornene and styrene with high activity (~105 g·mol-1·h-1), high molecular weight (~104 g·mol-1), and tunable styrene content (up to 17 mol%) and glass transition temperature. The linear relationship between the glass transition temperature and styrene content indicated the formation of the uniform copolymers. A preference for the norbornene insertion in each catalytic system was investigated by the evaluation of the monomer reactivity ratios.

Abstract:Picolyl, pyridine, and methyl functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene iridium complexes [Cp*Ir(CN)Cl]Cl (4, CN = 3-Methyl-1-picolyimidazol-2-ylidene), [Cp*Ir(CN)Cl][Cp*IrCl3] (5), [Cp*Ir(C-N)Cl]Cl (6, C-N = 3-Methyl-1-pyridylimidazol-2-ylidene) and [Cp*Ir(L)Cl-2] (7, L = 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) have been synthesized by transmetallation from Ag(I) carbene species, and characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR spectra and elemental analyses. The molecular structures of 5-7 have been confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analyses. The iridium carbene complexes 4 and 6 show moderate catalytic activities (3.03 x 10(5) g PNB (mol Ir) (1)h (1) and 1.70 x 10(6) g PNB (mol Ir) (1) h (1)) for the addition polymerization of norbornene in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO) as co-catalyst. The produced polynorbornene have been characterized by IR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectra, showing it follows the vinyl-addition-type of polymerization.

Abstract:The title complex bis{1-[[（3-methyl-pyridin-2-yl） amino] methyl-phenyl]-2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenol} palladium(C42H56O2N4Pd) has been synthesized by the reaction of 1-[[（3-methyl-pyridin-2-yl）amino]methyl-phenyl]-2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenol with Pd（OAc）2, and was characterized by IR and elemental analyses（C, H, N）. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the complex revealed an almost parallelogram geometry of the metal center, space group P1 with a = 12.3870（13）, b = 12.9673（12）, c = 14.3998（4） ?, α = 67.53（2）, β = 75.34（2）, γ = 86.89（3）°, V = 2065.5（3） ?3, Mr = 773.32, Z = 2, Dc = 1.243 g/cm3, μ = 0.489 mm-1, F（000） = 816, the final R = 0.0649 and wR = 0.1567. The compound was investigated for the catalytic behavior towards norbornene（NB） vinyl addition polymerization. And the complex exhibits high catalytic activities up to 1.668 × 107 g of PNB（mol of Pd）-1 h-1 with high monomer conversion using methylaluminoxane（MAO） as the cocatalyst.
