Abstract:Bifunctional hydrogen electrocatalysis (hydrogen-oxidation and hydrogen-evolution reactions) in alkaline solution is desirable but challenging. Among all available electrocatalysts, Ni-based materials are the only non-precious-metal-based candidates for alkaline hydrogen oxidation, but they generally suffer from low activity. Here, we demonstrate that properly alloying Ni with Mo could significantly promote its electrocatalytic performance. Ni4Mo alloy nanoparticles are prepared from the reduction of molybdate-intercalated Ni(OH)(2) nanosheets. The final product exhibits an apparent hydrogen-oxidation activity exceeding that of the Pt benchmark and a record-high mass-specific kinetic current of 79 A g(-1) at an overpotential of 50 mV. A superior hydrogen-evolution performance is also measured in alkaline solution. These experimental data are rationalized by our theoretical simulations, which show that alloying Ni with Mo significantly weakens its hydrogen adsorption, improves the hydroxyl adsorption and decreases the reaction barrier for water formation.
Bimetallic MOF-Templated Fabrication of Porous Zn, N Co-doped Mo 2 C for an Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Non-noble metal electrocatalysts have attracted great attention on account of low cost, good stability, and excellent hydrogen evolution performance. One of the most efficient approaches to increase active sites is to enlarge the specific surface area. Herein, we prepared porous zinc, nitrogen co-doped molybdenum carbide (Zn, N co-doped Mo2C) with large specific surface area, which was derived from Zn, Mo bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (Zn, Mo bimetallic MOFs) via a two-step approach. Most of Zn formed a porous structure during the volatilizing process at high temperature and reduction condition. In addition, the N element from the MOF template was doped into Zn, N co-doped Mo2C. Benefitting from the co-doping of Zn and N, the porous structure with a large specific surface area (352.2 m2 g–1), and the electrochemical surface area (241.2 cm2), Zn, N co-doped Mo2C showed enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction activity in H2SO4 (0.5 mol L–1) with a low overpotential of 169.5 mV (10 mA cm–2), an onset potential of 56.3 mV (1 mA cm–2), a small Tafel slope (62.2 mV dec–1), and good stability. Abstract:Characterized by a large surface area to volume ratio, nanostructured metal oxides possess unique chemical and physical properties with applications in electronics, catalysis, sensors, etc. In this study, Mo3Al8, an intermetallic compound, has been used as a precursor to obtain nanostructured molybdenum oxides. It was prepared into ribbons by arc-melting and melt-spinning techniques. Single and double-step free corrosion of the as-quenched material have been studied in 1 M KOH, 1 M HF and 1.25 M FeCl3 at room temperature. In both cases, nanostructured molybdenum oxides were obtained on a surface layer a few microns thick. Two of the as-prepared samples were tested for their electrocatalytic capability for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5 M H2SO4 giving low onset potential (−50 mV, −45 mV), small Tafel slopes (92 mV dec−1, 9 mV dec−1) and high exchange current densities (0.08 mA cm−2, 0.35 mA cm−2 respectively). The proposed nanostructured molybdenum oxides are cost-effective and sustainable due to the cheap and abundant starting material used and the simple synthetic route, paving the way for their possible application as HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:MoN is a promising material for electrochemical hydrogen evolution due to its cheap price and excellent catalytic activity sites, but the low conductivity prevents further improvement of its catalytic performance. In this work, porous MoN nanorods have been fabricated with an efficient and facile precursor method. XRD, Raman and TEM showed MoN nanorods with diameters of about 100 nm. With a simple mechanical mixing method, MoN/conductive carbon black (CB) composites with different weight ratios have been fabricated. The composite possessed two merits, that is, the more catalytic active site in MoN nanorods due to the porous structure, and fast electron transfer due to the CB. So, it has been used as a hydrogen evolution material. With the proper weight ratio, the composite exhibited brilliant catalytic activity and durability in acidic media. It possesses an overpotential of 162 mV to approach 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tefel slope of 54 mV dec −1 and maintains the good electrocatalytic activity for at least 10 h. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated that the electrocatalyst possessed a high catalytic active area and fast electron transfer. These results can compare with many other recently reported nitride catalysts. Our work possibly provides a new avenue for the preparation of a MoN-based catalyst for highly efficient electrochemical hydrogen evolution.
Electrodeposition of mesoporous Ni–Mo–O composite films for hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:We have prepared mesoporous composite Ni–Mo–O films (Ni–Mo–O MCFs) on conductive Au substrates via electrodeposition with the help of a soft template, and determined the optimal electrodeposition conditions of the films such as ethanol concentration, rotate speed, and current density. The composition of the films can be adjusted with the deposition current density and ethanol content to a Ni content within 50–75 wt.%. Mesoporosity is constantly present and homogeneously distributed on the films with a pore diameter about 5 nm–10 nm, and the film thickness is uniform at 200 nm. We propose a mechanism for the Ni–Mo–O MCFs formation, and evaluate the electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Results show that the Ni–Mo–O MCFs display an improved active surface area and higher catalytic activity for HER, and excellent stability for over 70 h in 1 M KOH solution. The overpotential can reach a value of 222.8 mV at 10 mA cm−2 current density, with a Tafel slope of 141.66 mV dec−1, compared to bare substrate (558.57 mV at 10 mA cm−2). The improved electrocatalytic performance of Ni–Mo–O MCFs is attributed to the synergetic effect of the larger actual surface and the enhanced electrochemical activity of the films.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) based on water electrolysis represents an ideal approach for hydrogen production. The advancement of highly active non-precious metal catalysts holds paramount importance. This research employed powder metallurgy sintering to prepare Ni–Cr–Fe and Ni–Cr–Fe–Mo porous materials. It investigated the impact of Mo doping and sintering temperature on the catalytic activity and microstructural influence of hydrogen evolution materials. Furthermore, the materials' electrochemical performance and long-term stability in 6 mol/L KOH were examined. In complicated systems, the current work provides a feasible method for producing hydrogen from Ni–Cr–Fe–Mo porous materials in a strong alkali environment. The results exhibited that when Mo content is 5% and the sintering temperature is 800 °C, the porosity of Ni–Cr–Fe–Mo porous materials is up to 39.9% and the catalytic activity is up to 97%. At the same time, the current density decays to 7.1% after 1000 cycles of electrolysis and shows good HER stability after 48 h. The enhanced catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution emanated from the positive synergy among the transition metal elements.

Abstract:Owing to the depletion of renewable energy sources, manufacturing stable, efficient and economical non-noble electrode materials for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through electrochemical water splitting is a promising avenue. In this work, Ni–Mo alloy films containing different Mo concentrations were synthesized via potentiostatic technique, and the mechanism of Ni 2+ and Mo 6+ co-deposition in an ethylene glycol system (EG) was recorded. The co-deposition mechanism of Mo 6+ and Ni 2+ in the EG shows that the existence of Ni 2+ can facilitate the reduction of Mo 6+ , while Mo 6+ can impede the reduction of Ni 2+ . Furthermore, both functions could be reinforced owing to the improved content of Ni 2+ and Mo 6+ in the EG system. Ni–Mo alloy films containing different Mo concentrations could be obtained from the EG solution, and their microstructures could be changed by changing the Mo content. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs exhibit that Ni–Mo alloy films with 10.84 wt% Mo show a cauliflower-like pattern. Benefiting from the alloying technique to modify the Ni electronic structure with Mo, coupled with the concurrent presence of an appropriate cauliflower-like structure, Ni–Mo alloy films with 10.84 wt% Mo show remarkable catalytic activity and durability with an HER overpotential of 74 mV ( η 10 , overpotential was recorded at j = 10 mA cm −2 ) in 1.0 M KOH solution.

Abstract:Ni–Mo electrocatalyst with a tailored nanostructure is synthesized by simple electrodeposition. The heterogeneous structure composed of Ni4Mo nanoalloys decorated on a MoOx matrix displays efficient HER across a wide range of pH conditions: alkaline (1 m KOH), acidic (0.5 m H2SO4), and neutral (1 m PBS) electrolytes. Herein, a heterogeneous structure of Ni–Mo catalyst comprising Ni4Mo nanoalloys decorated on a MoOx matrix via electrodeposition is introduced. This catalyst exhibits remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity across a range of pH conditions. The heterogeneous Ni–Mo catalyst showed low overpotentials only of 24 and 86, 21 and 60, and 37 and 168 mV to produce a current density of 10 and 100 mA cm−2 (η10 and η100) in alkaline, acidic, and neutral media, respectively, which represents one of the most active catalysts for the HER. The enhanced activity is attributed to the hydrogen spillover effect, where hydrogen atoms migrate between the Ni4Mo alloys and the MoOx matrix, forming hydrogen molybdenum bronze as additional active sites. Additionally, the Ni4Mo facilitated the water dissociation process, which helps the Volmer step in the alkaline/neutral HER. Through electrochemical analysis, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, the fast HER mechanism is elucidated.

Abstract:Fabricating a cost effective hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst without using precious metal elements is in crucial demand for environmentally-benign energy production. In this work, the thin and edge-rich molybdenum disulfide nanosheets, with carbon doped in the interlayers and decorated on graphene, were developed by a facile solvothermal process. The as-synthesized nanohybrids exhibited high catalytic ability for the hydrogen evolution electrochemical reaction with an onset overpotential of 0.165 mV and a Tafel slope of 46 mV dec(-1). Furthermore, the prepared nanohybrids also showed better durability and stability. Our work may lead to a potential method for in situ production of metal carbide-sulphur hybrid nanomaterials with promising applications for the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract:The incorporation of Mo into nanocrystalline FeNi3 is achieved via plasma spraying. The resulting material is characterized by a metallic solid solution with distinct morphology and electronic properties. The presence of Mo increases the work function, reduces the metal–hydrogen interaction, and reduces the formation of superficial Ni and Fe oxides, resulting in enhanced catalytic activity toward hydrogen production. Solution precursor plasma spraying is used to produce catalytic trimetallic coatings containing Ni, Fe and Mo directly onto stainless‐steel mesh, Ni foam and carbon paper. The resulting material is mostly comprised of face centered cubic FeNi3 alloy forming a highly porous coating with nanostructured features. The addition of Mo (up to ≈14 at%) generates no new crystal phases but only an increase in the lattice parameter, indicating the formation of FeNi3Mox solid solutions. The FeNi3Mox solid solutions are used as electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. The addition of Mo increases the HER activity significantly reaching an optimum performance at ≈9 at% Mo (FeNi3Mo0.40) with an overpotential at −10 mA cm−2 of 112 mV and a Tafel slope of 109 mV dec−1. The enhanced HER activity is attributed to the formation of a FeNi3Mox solid solution with an increased work function that is correlated to smaller hydrogen adsorption energies. Theoretical activity maps reveal that sites near superficial Mo atoms forms catalytic hot spots and are responsible for the observed activity.

Thermodynamics guided ultrafast and continuous preparation of Mo2C nanocrystals for hydrogen evolution electrocatalysis

Abstract:Existing nano-Mo2C preparation methods suffer from expensive raw materials, subtle operation demands and complex synthesis steps. Herein, both theoretical and experimental studies were performed to develop a more efficient and economical method for nano-Mo2C preparation. Reaction thermodynamics of gas-vapor system of CH4-MoO3-N2 indicates that high-proportion inert gas significantly increases the required carbonization potential (CO/CO2) for Mo2C formation, but surplus carbon produced from methane decomposition can trigger water gas producing reaction and Boudouard reaction to help meet the requirement. Nano-Mo2C was then synthesized by mixing N2-carried MoO3 vapor with CH4 under varying conditions including temperature, gas flowrate and vapor concentration. It is found that MoO3 vapor experienced conversions to monoclinic MoO2 to cubic Mo to hexagonal Mo2C, and all these stages could be finished in as short as about 6 s at 1100 °C with initial molar ratio of CH4 to MoO3 over 3.5. The final products were present as porous plate-like single crystals or chain-like polycrystals, which are determined by initial vapor concentration and gas flowrate. Furtherly, electrocatalytic properties of Mo2C nanocrystals for hydrogen evolution reaction were measured, and the sample with the largest specific surface area and cleaner surface showed competitive performance over reported nano-Mo2C.

Alloyed Re$_x$Mo$_{1-x}$S$_2$ Nanoflakes with Enlarged Interlayer Distances for Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Molybdenum sulfide (MoS$_2$) has attracted significant attention due to its great potential as a low-cost and efficient catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Developing a facile, easily upscalable, and inexpensive approach to produce catalytically active nanostructured MoS$_2$ with a high yield would significantly advance its practical application. Colloidal synthesis offers several advantages over other preparation techniques to overcome the low reaction yield of exfoliation and drawbacks of expensive equipment and processes used in chemical vapor deposition. In this work, we report an efficient synthesis of alloyed Re$_x$Mo$_{1-x}$S$_2$ nanoflakes with an enlarged interlayer distance, among which the composition Re$_{0.55}$Mo$_{0.45}$S$_2$ exhibits excellent catalytic performance with overpotentials as low as 79 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and a small Tafel slope of 42 mV/dec. Density functional theory calculations prove that enlarging the distance between layers in the Re$_x$Mo$_{1-x}$S$_2$alloy can greatly improve its catalytic performance due to a significantly reduced free energy of hydrogen adsorption. The developed approach paves the way to design advanced transition metal dichalcogenide-based catalysts for hydrogen evolution and to promote their large-scale practical application.

Surface Ammonium Ions Assisted Decoration of Monodisperse Cobalt Nanoparticles on Molybdenum Oxide Films as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The high expense associated with electrocatalysts poses a challenge to the advancement of a hydrogen-based energy economy. The utilization of nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts that are easily prepared and cost-effective is imperative for the future sustainability of a hydrogen society. The semiconductive MoO3-x has been identified as a promising nonprecious electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nevertheless, enhancing its relatively low electrocatalytic activity toward HER remains a top priority. This study illustrates the manipulation of surface ammonium ions (NH4+) to produce uniform and distinct cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs) on active MoO3-x supports, resulting in a more effective heterostructured composite electrocatalyst for HER. The presence of NH4+ ions in the MoO3-x film was extensively examined using infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-visible colorimetric techniques. Additionally, the firmly attached NH4+ ions were employed as binding sites to precipitate Co-containing complex ions. Due to the monolayer-like adsorption of NH4+ ions, only a small quantity of Co precipitate was formed, which was subsequently electrochemically transformed into Co atoms that diffused and created well-separated uniform metallic Co nanoparticles (with an average size of less than 10 nm) on the MoO3-x film. The resulting heterostructure displays a 4.5-fold increase in current density for HER compared to the MoO3-x electrocatalyst through electrochemical assessments. The enhanced catalytic activity was ascribed to the optimized adsorption/desorption of the species involved in water reduction at the heterointerfaces and improved charge transfer rates. These nanoheterostructures hold great promise for a variety of applications in heterogeneous electrocatalysis, while the novel approach could potentially direct the creation of more heterostructures.

Abstract:A highly active and stable electrochemical catalyst of nanoporous molybdenum carbide nanowires (np-Mo2C NWs) has been developed for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The np-Mo2C NWs were synthesized simply by pyrolysis of a MoOx,/amine hybrid precursor with sub-nanosized periodic structure under an inert atmosphere. The enriched nanoporosity and large reactive surface of these highly dispersed nanowires with uniform Mo2C nanocrystallites provide an efficient electrocatalysis, leading to their superior HER activity with lower onset overpotential and higher current densities than Mo2C microparticles. This study opens a new perspective for the development of highly active non-noble electrocatalysts for hydrogen production from water splitting.

Abstract:In this paper, Ag–ZnO and Ag–MoS2–ZnO were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method. The synthesized samples' physical properties were characterized by FESEM, XRD, TEM, EDS and BET. The catalytic activity of the synthesized samples for the hydrogen evolution reaction was investigated by an electrochemical workstation in 0.1 M KOH. XRD results indicate that 5% Ag-5% MoS2–ZnO with good crystallinity and purity is synthesized. According to the SEM results, Ag and ZnO are evenly distributed on the MoS2 nanosheets in the 5% Ag-5% MoS2–ZnO. LSV results show that adding Ag or MoS2 to ZnO can improve its catalytic activity. 5% Ag - ZnO had the best hydrogen evolution activity, and the overpotential was 568 mV. The catalytic activity of ZnO doped with Ag and MoS2 is higher than ZnO doped with Ag or MoS2 alone for hydrogen evolution reaction, this is mainly due to the synergy of heterojunction and Ag.

Abstract:The Ni–MoO2 heterostructure was synthesized in suit on porous bulk NiMo alloy by a facile powder metallurgy and hydrothermal method. The results of field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveal that the as-prepared electrode possesses the heterostructure and a layer of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets is formed on the surface of Ni–MoO2 electrode simultaneously after hydrothermal treatment, which provides abundant interface and much active sites, as well as much active specific surface area. The results of hydrogen evolution reaction indicate that the Ni–MoO2 heterostructure electrode exhibits excellent catalytic performance, requiring only 41 mV overpotential to reach the current density of 10 mA/cm2. It also possesses a small Tafel slope of 52.7 mV/dec and long-term stability of electrolysis in alkaline medium.
