Abstract:Fabricating low-cost, earth-enriched and high-performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is significant but challenging for the development of a sustainable hydrogen economy. Herein, we report superhydrophilic molybdenum phosphide quantum dots on porous carbon matrix (MoP-QDs@PC) using polyoxometalates (POMs)-contained metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors, where Keggin-type PMo12 POMs clusters are confined within the zirconium-based UiO-66 MOFs (denoted as PMo12@UiO-66). We demonstrate that the as-formed MoC species by in-situ confined carbonization of PMo12@UiO-66 can be converted into superhydrophilic MoP-QDs by further phosphorization, while the porous carbon matrix can be converted into rich P and O co-doped carbon matrix, which greatly increase the wettability and the amount of catalytic active sites exposed to the electrolytes. The as-prepared MoP-QDs@PC electrocatalyst exhibits excellent HER performance, which outperforms commercial 20% Pt/C electrocatalyst when overpotential (eta) higher than 197 mV and 233 mV under alkaline and acidic conditions, respectively. Depending on the diversity of POMs and MOFs, the current feasible and reliable MoP-QDs@PC electrocatalysts from PMo12@UiO-66 precursor would inspire more effective strategies to economical, efficient and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Efficient electrocatalyst plays a significant role on the development of hydrogen energy. In this work, an N,P-codoped carbon layer coupled with MoP nanoparticles (MoP/NPCs) was prepared through a facile high-temperature pyrolysis treatment. The obtained MoP/NPCs presented efficient activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with low onset potential of 90 mV, and a small Tafel slope (71 mV dec-1), as well as extraordinary stability in acidic electrolyte. This work provides a new facile strategy for the design and synthesis of sustainable and effective molybdenum-based electrocatalysts as alternatives to non-Pt catalysts for HER.
Self-Standing Mo/MoO2 Porous Flake Arrays for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in High-pH Media

Abstract:The alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is limited by scarce proton availability, resulting in slower reaction kinetics compared to those under acidic conditions. Enhancing the local chemical environment of protons on the catalyst surface can improve the intrinsic reaction kinetics. Here, we design a Mo/MoO2 metallic heterojunction that creates an acidic-like environment with a proton-rich surface, significantly enhancing HER performance in alkaline electrolytes, as confirmed by in situ spectroscopy and electrochemical analysis. A self-standing Mo/MoO2 catalytic electrode is fabricated via a controlled pyrolysis-reduction strategy. This electrode exhibits exceptional HER activity, with low overpotentials of 65 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 315 mV at 500 mA cm-2, a Tafel slope of 38.2 mV dec-1, and stability exceeding 60 h at -300 mA cm-2 in alkaline solution. The porous flake array structure of the Mo/MoO2 heterojunctions enhances the adjacent hydronium (H3O+) concentration, resulting in a ΔGH* value of 0.15 eV and a water dissociation energy barrier of 0.37 eV in an alkaline medium. The successful preparation of a large-area electrode (2 cm × 2 cm) demonstrates the scalability of this approach for fabricating molybdenum-based catalytic electrodes with enhanced HER activity in alkaline environments.

Abstract:Numerous efforts have been made to search for high-efficiency and noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, molybdenum phosphide (MoP) nanoparticles encapsulated in P-doped carbon (MoP@PC) was synthesized through a facile one-step pyrolysis of the precursor, namely 3D cross-linked network structure of MoOx contained in polyaniline and phytic acid (MoOx@PANI-PA). The obtained MoP@PCelectrocatalyst retained the 3D structure and exhibits outstanding HER abilities with ultra-low overpotential (eta(10) = 69 mV), small Tafel slope (55 mV dec(-1)) and high stability in acid solution. This work offers a facile method to prepare cost-effective transition metal phosphide catalysts.

Abstract:Developing non-noble and high-performance electrocatalysts towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acidic and alkaline medium remains a stern challenge. Herein, the composite of P-doped Mo2C and hierarchically ultrathin N, P-doped carbon nanoribbon network (P-Mo2C/NPC) is proposed through a facile simultaneous phosphating-carbonization strategy, in which biomass and phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) were employed as carbon precursor and metal precursor, respectively. The doping of the electronegative P heteroatom increases the active sites, weakens the Mo-H bond strength in the HER, and facilitates the electron transfer. Consequently, the synthesized catalyst appears good intrinsic activity towards HER, which shows low overpotentials of 172 mV and 118 mV to afford the current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, respectively. Furthermore, the synthesized catalyst can sustain 24 h with stable performance, which is of great favorable for industrial applications. This work may shed some light on the rational design and manufacture of HER electrocatalysts with high compatibility to different electrolytic environments.

Abstract:Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through low-cost and earth-abundant electrocatalysts at low overpotentials is a crucial project to clean energy. Molybdenum dioxide/reduced graphene oxide/polyimide-carbon nanotube (MoO2/RGO/PI-CNT) film was synthesized by a simple electrodeposition method as an efficient catalyst for HER. MoO2 nanoparticles with a small size of 10-20 nm uniformly disperse on the RGO surface. The large quantity and small size of MoO2 nanoparticles afford large surface area for HER, greatly enhancing the electrocatalytic performance of MoO2/RGO/PI-CNT film. The HER electrocatalytic property of MoO2/RGO/PI-CNT film in acidic solution is evaluated by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). MoO2/RGO/PI-CNT film exhibit a high electrocatalytic activity for HER at a small onset overpotential (-110 mV vs RHE) with a high current density (10.0 mA cm(-2)) and a good stability. The low Tafel slope (68 mV dec(-1)) reveals the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism for HER. The comparison between MoO2/RGO/PI-CNT film and other catalysts indicate that the MoO2/RGO/PI-CNT film had a great performance for HER. Abstract:Ni–Mo electrocatalyst with a tailored nanostructure is synthesized by simple electrodeposition. The heterogeneous structure composed of Ni4Mo nanoalloys decorated on a MoOx matrix displays efficient HER across a wide range of pH conditions: alkaline (1 m KOH), acidic (0.5 m H2SO4), and neutral (1 m PBS) electrolytes. Herein, a heterogeneous structure of Ni–Mo catalyst comprising Ni4Mo nanoalloys decorated on a MoOx matrix via electrodeposition is introduced. This catalyst exhibits remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity across a range of pH conditions. The heterogeneous Ni–Mo catalyst showed low overpotentials only of 24 and 86, 21 and 60, and 37 and 168 mV to produce a current density of 10 and 100 mA cm−2 (η10 and η100) in alkaline, acidic, and neutral media, respectively, which represents one of the most active catalysts for the HER. The enhanced activity is attributed to the hydrogen spillover effect, where hydrogen atoms migrate between the Ni4Mo alloys and the MoOx matrix, forming hydrogen molybdenum bronze as additional active sites. Additionally, the Ni4Mo facilitated the water dissociation process, which helps the Volmer step in the alkaline/neutral HER. Through electrochemical analysis, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, the fast HER mechanism is elucidated.

Abstract:The high expense associated with electrocatalysts poses a challenge to the advancement of a hydrogen-based energy economy. The utilization of nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts that are easily prepared and cost-effective is imperative for the future sustainability of a hydrogen society. The semiconductive MoO3-x has been identified as a promising nonprecious electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nevertheless, enhancing its relatively low electrocatalytic activity toward HER remains a top priority. This study illustrates the manipulation of surface ammonium ions (NH4+) to produce uniform and distinct cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs) on active MoO3-x supports, resulting in a more effective heterostructured composite electrocatalyst for HER. The presence of NH4+ ions in the MoO3-x film was extensively examined using infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-visible colorimetric techniques. Additionally, the firmly attached NH4+ ions were employed as binding sites to precipitate Co-containing complex ions. Due to the monolayer-like adsorption of NH4+ ions, only a small quantity of Co precipitate was formed, which was subsequently electrochemically transformed into Co atoms that diffused and created well-separated uniform metallic Co nanoparticles (with an average size of less than 10 nm) on the MoO3-x film. The resulting heterostructure displays a 4.5-fold increase in current density for HER compared to the MoO3-x electrocatalyst through electrochemical assessments. The enhanced catalytic activity was ascribed to the optimized adsorption/desorption of the species involved in water reduction at the heterointerfaces and improved charge transfer rates. These nanoheterostructures hold great promise for a variety of applications in heterogeneous electrocatalysis, while the novel approach could potentially direct the creation of more heterostructures.
Keplerate polyoxomolybdate nanoball mediated controllable preparation of metal-doped molybdenum disulfide for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution in acidic and alkaline media

Abstract:Rationally designed novel cost-effective hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts with controlled surface composition and advanced structural superiority is extremely critical to optimize the HER performance. Polyoxometalates (POMs) with structural diversity and adjustable element compositions represent a promising precursor for rational design and preparation of HER electrocatalysts. Herein, a series of transition metal-doped MoS2 materials with different surface engineered structures (Fe, Cr, V doping and S vacancies) (M-MoS2/CC, M = Fe, Cr and V) were fabricated by a simple hydrothermal-vulcanization strategy using Keplerate polyoxomolybdate nanoball ({Mo72Fe30}, {Mo72Cr30}, {Mo72V30}, {Mo132}) as precursors. The enlarged interlayer spacing as well as the integration of homogeneous transition metal doping and abundant sulfur vacancies endows prepared M-MoS2/CC with superior HER electrocatalytic performance and excellent long-term working stability in both acidic and alkaline media. The optimized Fe-MoS2/CC afford current densities of 10 and 50 mA/cm2 at overpotentials of 188/272 mV and 194/394 mV in 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 and 1.0 mol/L KOH aqueous solution, respectively, outperforming most of reported typical transition metal sulfide-based catalysts. This work represents an important breakthrough for POMs-mediated highly efficient transition metal sulfide-based HER electrocatalysts with wide range pH activity and may provide new options for the rational design of promising HER electrocatalysts and beyond.

Fe2O3/P-doped CoMoO4 Electrocatalyst Delivers Efficient Overall Water Splitting in Alkaline Media

Abstract:Phosphorization of molybdates has been shown to promote hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity but is usually detrimental to oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, frustrating efforts to create bifunctional HER/ OER electrocatalysts. Herein, we show that Fe2O3-modulated P-doped CoMoO4 on nickel foam (Fe-P-CMO) is an excellent bifunctional HER/OER electrocatalyst in alkaline media, with the adverse effect of phosphorization on the OER activity of CoMoO4 being countered via Fe2O3 introduction. An alkaline splitting electrolyser assembled directly using the self-supporting Fe-P-CMO electrode possessed outstanding long-term durability with ultralow cell voltages of 1.48 and 1.59 V required to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively. Detailed experimental investigations showed that during HER, P-doped CoMoO4 in Fe-P-CMO underwent surface reconstruction with the in-situ formation of Co(OH)2 on the P-CoMoO4 (Co(OH)2/P-CoMoO4). During OER, Pdoped CoMoO4 was deeply reconstructed to CoOOH with the complete dissolution of Mo, leading to the in-situ formation of Fe2O3/CoOOH heterojunctions.
Facile Synthesis, Characterization and DFT Studies of a Nanostructured Nickel-Molybdenum-phosphorous Planar Electrode As an Active Electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Abstract:In this paper, we combined experimental and theoretical routes to develop a novel nanostructured nickel-molybdenum-phosphorous planar electrode as an efficient catalyst toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The HER activities of various Ni-based electrodes (Ni4Mo and Ni12P5) were evaluated not only experimentally but also by density functional theory. Meanwhile, the electrocatalytic performance of Ni-Mo-P prepared at different temperatures (500 °C, 600 °C, 700 °C, and 800 °C) was also explored. The results indicated that the sample prepared at 700 °C exhibited the best catalytic activity. The as-fabricated Ni-Mo-P electrode possessed lower overpotential, higher current density and a smaller Tafel slope than pristine modified Ni@Ni-Mo in 1.0 M KOH and also showed long-term stability. An overpotential as low as 276 mV could be achieved at 100 mA cm-2 H2 evolving current density, which was superior to those of most previously reported samples. After phosphorization treatment, the as-formed Ni12P5 played a crucial role in the activity enhancement. Density functional theory calculations revealed that Ni12P5 has a smaller |ΔGH*| value than Ni4Mo, further confirming that Ni12P5 shows better catalytic performance than Ni4Mo.
Carbon-coated cobalt molybdenum oxide as a high-performance electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:Synthesis of high-performance and cost-effective catalysts towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical in developing electrochemical water-splitting as a viable energy conversion technique. For non-precious metal Co- and Ni-based catalysts, hydroxides were found to form on the surface of the catalysts under alkaline environments and benefit the catalytic performance, whereas there is limited systematic study on the explicit influence of hydroxides on the electrocatalytic mechanism and performance of these catalysts. Herein, we report a close correlation observed between the amount of the surface hydroxides formed and the resulting electrocatalytic performance of a Co-Mo-O nanocatalyst through careful comprehensive structural and property characterizations. We found that an appropriate amount of hydroxide can be moderated by simply coating the catalyst surface with carbon shells to optimize the catalytic properties. As a result, a carbon-coated Co-Mo-O nanocatalyst was successfully developed and is among the best reported non-precious HER catalysts with a superior electrocatalytic activity and outstanding durability for the HER under alkaline environment. First-principles calculations were further conducted to probe the nature of the active sites and the role of hydroxides in the Co-Mo-O@C/NF catalyst towards the HER.
Mesoporous MoO3–x Material As an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

Abstract:A unique approach for the synthesis of nonstoichiometric, mesoporous molybdenum oxide (MoO3–x) with nanosized crystalline walls by using a soft template (PEO‐b‐PS) synthesis method is introduced. The as‐synthesized mesoporous MoO3–x is very active and stable (durability > 12 h) for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under both acidic and alkaline conditions. The intrinsic MoO3 serves as an HER electrocatalyst without the assistance of carbon materials, noble metals, or MoS2 materials. The results from transmission electron microscopy and N2 sorption techniques show that the as‐synthesized mesoporous MoO3–x has large accessible pores (20–40 nm), which are able to facilitate mass transport and charge transfer during HER. In terms of X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature‐programmed oxidation, and diffusive reflectance UV–vis spectroscopy, the mesoporous MoO3–x exhibits mixed oxidation states (Mo5+, Mo6+) and an oxygen‐deficient structure. The as‐synthesized MoO3–x only requires a low overpotential (≈0.14 V) to achieve a 10 mA cm−2 current density in 0.1 m KOH and the Tafel slope is as low as 56 mV dec−1. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate a change of electronic structure and the possible reaction pathway of HER. Oxygen vacancies and mesoporosity serve as key factors for excellent performance.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used as precursor materials for electrocatalysts in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) because of the various and adjustable metal sites with long-ranged order and porous structures. In this paper, polyoxometalate-based MOF (POMOF) ([Ni(H2O)2(bth)(Mo8O26)0.5·3H2O], JLJZ-1) was synthesized by ammonium molybdate hydrate, Ni2+, and a flexible chain ligand (bth, 1,6-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)hexane) via a hydrothermal method. Then, JLJZ-1 decorated with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), phytic acid (PA) as the composite precursor, and carbon-coated ternary hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst (Mo2C/MoP/MoNiP@C) was prepared via one-step calcination. In acidic medium, Mo2C/MoP/MoNiP@C exhibits good catalytic activity with an overpotential of 154 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm–2, and it shows good stability within 14 h. After characterization and tests, the satisfactory HER performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects among multiple components. Furthermore, the mesoporous structures help to expose more active sites, and the graphitic carbon layers protect the catalyst nanoparticles from corrosion. This work provides a guiding strategy of postdecorated POMOF-based composites as precursors for multicomponent electrocatalysts used in energy conversion fields.

Abstract:The development of efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) is pivotal for advancing cleaner and sustainable fuel production technologies. The conventional electrocatalysts have limited stability and higher overpotentials, and there is demand to explore advanced materials and synthesis methods. In this context, a novel bifunctional electrocatalyst has been devised through the phosphidation of tungsten molybdenum oxide (P-Mo0.69W0.31H0.98O3) at relatively low temperatures. This innovative approach aims to enhance the efficiency of HER and OER while minimizing the overpotential values and maintaining higher stability. Specifically, the individual performance of Mo0.69W0.31H0.98O3 has been significantly boosted by doping it with phosphorus at a low temperature of 300 °C. This doping process results in a unique morphology for the catalyst, leading to a notable improvement in OER/HER performances. P-Mo0.69W0.31H0.98O3 exhibits a potential of 320 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in a KOH electrolyte, demonstrating both high activity and long-term stability. Additionally, P-Mo0.69W0.31H0.98O3 exhibits commendable HER performance, requiring only 380 mV at 100 mA cm-2. This combination of efficient OER and HER performance positions P-Mo0.69W0.31H0.98O3 as representing a significant advancement in the field of electrocatalysis, additionally addressing the fundamental gap by providing stable and hybrid catalyst for various electrochemical devices. Given its cost-effectiveness and exceptional activity, P-Mo0.69W0.31H0.98O3 holds significant potential for advancing the field of electrocatalysis and contributing to the development of cleaner and sustainable fuel production methods.
Electrodeposition of mesoporous Ni–Mo–O composite films for hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:We have prepared mesoporous composite Ni–Mo–O films (Ni–Mo–O MCFs) on conductive Au substrates via electrodeposition with the help of a soft template, and determined the optimal electrodeposition conditions of the films such as ethanol concentration, rotate speed, and current density. The composition of the films can be adjusted with the deposition current density and ethanol content to a Ni content within 50–75 wt.%. Mesoporosity is constantly present and homogeneously distributed on the films with a pore diameter about 5 nm–10 nm, and the film thickness is uniform at 200 nm. We propose a mechanism for the Ni–Mo–O MCFs formation, and evaluate the electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Results show that the Ni–Mo–O MCFs display an improved active surface area and higher catalytic activity for HER, and excellent stability for over 70 h in 1 M KOH solution. The overpotential can reach a value of 222.8 mV at 10 mA cm−2 current density, with a Tafel slope of 141.66 mV dec−1, compared to bare substrate (558.57 mV at 10 mA cm−2). The improved electrocatalytic performance of Ni–Mo–O MCFs is attributed to the synergetic effect of the larger actual surface and the enhanced electrochemical activity of the films.

Abstract:Efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over noble‐metal‐free electrocatalysts provides one of the most promising pathways to face the energy crisis. Herein, facile cobalt‐doping based on Co‐modified MoOx–amine precursors is developed to optimize the electrochemical HER over Mo2C nanowires. The effective Co‐doping into Mo2C crystal structure increases the electron density around Fermi level, resulting in the reduced strength of Mo–H for facilitated HER kinetics. As expected, the Co‐Mo2C nanowires with an optimal Co/Mo ratio of 0.020 display a low overpotential (η10 = 140 and 118 mV for reaching a current density of –10 mA cm−2; η100 = 200 and 195 mV for reaching a current density of –100 mA cm−2), a small Tafel slope (39 and 44 mV dec−1), and a low onset overpotential (40 and 25 mV) in 0.5 m H2SO4 and 1.0 m KOH, respectively. This work highlights a feasible strategy to explore efficient electrocatalysts via engineering on composition and nanostructure.

Abstract:Molybdenum (Mo) based compounds have attracted growing attention in the electrochemical field due to their abundant reserves, high catalytic activity and stability. However, the efficient implementation of MoP for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been hindered by the limited number of active centers and the weakening electron transferring rate resulting from poor conductivity and easy accumulation during preparation. Herein, we innovate the use of porous poly(ionic liquid)s (MPILs)-loaded phosphomolybdic acid by ion exchange to achieve porous N, P-codoped carbon-encapsulated ultrafine MoP (MoP@NPC). The electronic structure of MoP can be modulated with the carbon matrix, while ultrafine average size of 3 nm nanoparticles afford highly exposed active sites, thus contributing to the boosted electrocatalytic performance of HER. Besides, N, P-codoped carbon coupling with porous structure could facilitate electron transport and shorten the ion transport distance during the electrochemical process. In alkaline media, the optimized MoP@NPC shows small overpotentials of 134 mV with Tafel slopes of 76 mV dec−1 for HER. In addition, excellent electrocatalysis stability has been acquired by MoP@NPC. The in-situ Raman and ex-situ XPS techniques are applied to confirm the superior electrocatalytic HER property of the obtained MoP@NPC. This work provides a new way to prepare a novel Mo-based electrocatalyst by exploiting a special catalyst precursor for hydrogen-energy-related applications.

Abstract:Mass production of hydrogen by electrolysis of water largely hinges on the development of highly efficient and economical electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Though having the merits of high earth abundance, easy availability, and tunable composition, transition-metal oxides are usually deemed as poor electrocatalysts for HER. Herein, we demonstrate that doping beta-CoMoO4 nanoplates with phosphorus can turn them into active electrocatalysts for HER Theoretical calculation and experimental studies unravel that enhanced electrical conductivity and optimized hydrogen adsorption free energy are major causes for the improvement of intrinsic activity. As a result, only an overpotential of 138 mV is required to drive hydrogen evolving at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 M KOH for P-doped beta-CoMoO4, which outstrips many recently reported transition-metal oxides and is just slightly inferior to commercial Pt/C. This work opens a new route to tune the HER performance of transition-metal oxides.
